American Conservation & Air did a great job installing a new HVAC system in our home, blowing in insulation, creating additional vents, and replacing the ducts. The east side used to be much warmer in the summer, because there were fewer vents. The air is more balanced in our home. We anticipate the system will also be more energy efficient and lower our energy bills. We rehired the American Conservation and Air to install a heat pump in our 400 sq. ft garage studio. The system replaced a window AC/heater unit. Our goal was to cool the studio efficiently and quietly. It works well, and is so much quieter than that window unit. read more

I highly recommend the team over at American Conservation. They easily worked around a bunch of kids, a family of squirrels and a house that needed a lot of help. The guys on site did more than just the work they needed to do. I know nothing about insulation and HVAC systems, but they took the time to not only walk me through what work they were doing, but they also answered all my questions about what the attic insulation was made of, what an R-Value is, and how it helps keep my energy bills down. This review is long overdue. If I had written a review immediately after our first experience with American Conservation & Air, it would have been entirely different. 3 years ago we hired AC&A to replace our existing HVAC system with a new, energy efficient system and to relocate the entire system in the attic instead of the existing location in the hallway. Everything seemed to run very smoothly and was assured by the confidence and smooth-talk of the sales person that we were making a wise investment in our home. (Naive much?? Not usually, but in this case, yes.) Within a few weeks of using our new system we knew something was amiss. Our home felt as if it had two entirely different temperate zones. When it was warm outside, one end of our house was super-cool but the other end was an entirely different climate. Called AC&A to review their work. They came back and tweaked a few ducts and assured us it would be better. If using fans during the heat of summer and space heaters in the dead of winter in a house that has a brand new HVAC system is "better" - no thank you. Fast forward to this summer. We're adding on square-footage to our home and need to air-condition that additional space. Our contractor had his stand-by HVAC company come out to look at our current (3 year old) HVAC and he begins to point out all the flaws with the installation and system, all the leaks in the duct work, all the crimped and smashed ducts that were improperly routed. It became pretty clear to our non-HVAC trained eyes why we were having such terrible output from our new system. I immediately called American Conservation & Air and politely asked if they would come back and review their work. Maybe, just maybe they'd be interested in reworking the ductwork and maybe, just maybe they'd be interested in giving us a bid to extend service to the new part of our home. We're fair (and perhaps a little too nice) people. We made an appointment, my husband met with them on site, they made notes and told us they'd call us back to arrange to come back and go over a bid. The gentleman that came out fully admitted that they should have replaced an existing main trunk the fed the ducts and wasn't sure why they didn't do that in the first place (ya' think??) We never heard from them again. I called several times and left messages - nothing. So if you are interested in a smooth talking sales guy to assure you that you'll have the latest, greatest HVAC and you are interested paying loads of money so that you can air-condition half your house with oscillating fans in the summer and space-heaters in the winter - give them a call!! Money to burn? These are your guys. If you are interested in hiring an honest company that will stand by their work when you invest large stacks in their products and services - then run as far away from American Conservation & Air as you can. I knew when I bought this house, that it needed a new everything: AC, heat, ductwork, and insulation. Nothing had been updated since it was built in 1985. I had intended to research the Austin Energy incentives, save up, and take my time with this major purchase. However, my AC unit went out less than a month after we moved in. I called around, got estimates, tried to figure out how to handle the Austin Energy and TX Gas rebates. It was all so confusing! Most of the companies wanted me to pay out of pocket and then file to get the rebates after the fact. I'm so grateful for Ken and American Conservation Air. He came in, told me exactly where to go to get the city sponsored low interest loan. He worked with the city to get my initial inspection done quickly, and the AC guys showed up a day early to do my install!! I ended up getting the whole system replaced: heat, ac, ductwork, insulation, monoxide detectors, air combustion in my water heater closet, and weather stripping around my doors. Ken works directly with the City of Austin to have the rebates go to him, so that I didn't have to pay the money out of pocket. All together, I think my rebates came up to about $2,500! And just a word about the City of Austin program, it's really cool... 1. You call an AC company, and they give you an estimate. 2. Then the city comes out and inspects to make sure you need what the AC guy says that you need... 3. The AC company does the work... 4. The city comes back out to make sure the work is completed fully and properly. 5. You get huge rebates, and a low or no interest loan if you need it 6. You save a ton of money on your electric and gas bills When making a major purchase like this, I loved having the city come out and put a second set of eyes on it, making sure I'm getting what I'm paying for, and that it's done properly. When looking for someone to do the job, I called five companies; Conservation Air was the only one that offered this level of service with the city. read more

in response to american conservation's reply: not exactly. my boyfriend (the one with cancer) went through the checklist of services you intended to provide. you did say that we needed to replace concrete board in our bathrooms before you began work, and that we needed to do it immediately. you gave us the name of someone you recommend, said it's wouldn't cost more than $500, and would be done in time for you to continue with your service. this was a huge chunk of money for a single-income family, but health and safety were my main concern. you're recommended person cost more than twice your approximation. 1) after much rescheduling on your part, you did insulate the attic. 2) you installed the registers (with caulk), and when the inspection did not pass, pried them off (as i watched) and reattached them in the state explained by the photos. 3) no return registers were replaced. there was much discussion (and rescheduling) regarding whether the return registers we have work, or if new returns should be cut in the bedroom, but no work was ever done. oh... i could go on. you did install the insulation around the doors, but, again, now they don't close completely. and i got ZERO light bulbs. and that tape and white junk around my furnace did not exist until you came one day. i know, i was there. you had multiple calls, messages, and opportunities to rectify or answer my claims for more than a year. i would like to thank you for FINALLY responding, but i wouldn't let you or your crew back into my house for any reason. i only write this response so that others may avoid similar treatment. read more

I definitely recommend American Conservation & Air. Kent and his team are very professional and always do the job right. Tim Glass has been my technician now for over 9 years. Tim is extremely knowledgeable, open, honest, and is always committed to the finding the issue and fixing it. In 2011, with Tim's recommendation, I decided to put in a new HVAC and I've been very pleased since. It came with a 10 year parts warranty and since 2011 I've only had to make one service call. Tim came out on very short notice, replaced the part at no charge, paid him for the labor, and it was as simple as that. STAY AWAAAY!! These guys have no clue what they are doing. Secondly, they do not give a rip about customer service. Here's what I went through.... March 2014 -- signed up for a maintenance package, they did their annual service on my AC. (Had to call them back because they didn't flush my condenser drain tube) (June) Beginning of summer---- AC failed. Had to call them for service. Tim came out and told us that our fan motor was failing and that a solenoid had been "fried" He told me that he would call the following day and let me know when the parts were ordered. Two days later....He never called. After I called them myself, American Conservation dispatched a different technician out and mentioned that the previous tech (Tim) had forgotten to order the parts. He then did his own inspection and said the solenoid was fine and that Tim must have misdiagnosed it. This new tech replaced our fan motor. ($600) The following day--- We called American Conservation because our AC was still not cooling as it should. The tech that installed our fan motor came back and said everything was fine and that the "second stage was indeed kicking in" July--- Called American Conservation because our AC has yet to reach below 77 degrees. Just didn't seem right. So Tim was dispatched out. He said that the other tech was wrong and that this "fried" solenoid was indeed still the problem. He came back two days later and replaced it. (Another $300) Two weeks later---- Something is still not right. Lack of cooling. Tim came back. Said he didn't know what was wrong- that the second stage was not kicking in and that it was short cycling. He said it might be the mother board. He needed to verify with a Lennox rep. Said he would call me when he got ahold of him. NEVER CALLED!!! One week later----- Finally called a different company. They diagnosed the motherboard, also noticed we were severely low on refrigerant, our wiring was all messed up from American Conservation, and that we were heavily overcharged for the replacement of a fan motor. Long story short------ DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE. They will nickel and dime you, then leave you hanging. read more

I took the time to write a review, as we have had bad experiences with HV/AC companies in the past. I just can't say enough great things about this company! My initial call was a friendly person who scheduled quickly and followed up with a phone the next day to make sure I was ready! I received a call when the technician was 30 min away. American Conservation & Air replaced an Evaporator Coil for me about 6 years ago, did great work. I recently had an issue and went thru my home warranty company, after constant problems for 2 months, working with 2 different HVAC companies, and being without any A/C at all for 2 weeks (and they were telling me another couple of days before it would get fixed). I decided to call ACA. Kent came out with another tech and they had the issue fixed that afternoon, then he called me 2 days later to see how things were going and to make sure it was still cooling. From now on ACA will be my FIRST call for A/C issues. read more

Stay away! These guys have a very professional salesperson on the front end and a bunch of amateurs doing the install. I had to have a total of three re-inspections because they could not figure out city of Austin codes. Initially they even wanted to charge me extra for the shroud covering the wall piping even though it is required by code. Of course they do not volunteer to wait around for the inspector even though it was their oversight. Avoid at all costs! read more

American Conservation installed an HVAC for us in March, 2013. We received 3 quotes from different companies and American Conservation came in the middle, but we went with them anyway because they had done some work for my brother and he was fairly satisfied. The installation appears to be fine. I'm don't know much about HVAC, but everything seems to work ok and looks good. In order to get the heating unit in the attic they had to enlarge the access hole by cutting out part of the ceiling and a joist. The problem is that the repair job was terrible. They used 1 x 6 for trim instead of the original molding (which was still good), they did not repair the joist and instead screwed the trim into drywall, and after the repair the access hole is smaller than it was originally so I can't get boxes out of the attic that I had put up there through the original access hole. I made multiple calls and emails to try to get them to fix it, with very poor responsiveness (it still is not fixed). Although I think they are fairly competent in HVAC, their after sale service is terrible and I would have to recommend not using them. Update (12.21.2013): The complaints noted above have been resolved by American Conservation, and have changed the rating from 1 star. read more

We used this company to install a new HVAC system over 15 years ago, and required service only a few times (and that was in the last 2 years of the life of the unit) The technicians have always been very very helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. Last year they recommended we get a new unit before the old one died, but I didn't manage to do so over the winter. And of course the unit died July 3. They came out and assessed the situation. By the following Monday, I had a bid, and they installed the new HVAC right away that week, and signed up for all of the energy savings with the City. They came back the following week and installed all new duct work and insulation according to city code. The house has never cooled more evenly in over 30 years. Today the city inspector approved the work. I can't thank them enough for taking care of this so quickly. Everyone that I dealt with that works for this company was always very very helpful. i would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. read more

We used this firm for the Austin Energy rebate program for energy efficiency- got a new downstairs Lennox AC unit, insulation, and various other little tweaks. Kent and his crew from AC & A were conscientious and worked very well with the city inspector. Because our house wasn't built with access to part of the attic over the main house, the guys had to cut through an upstairs closet to blow in the insulation. Done expertly and finished well. But the real joy was getting our first utility bill and see that the electricity portion went down to less than half of what it was. I have to admit when Kent told us it would go down by that much, I thought "Yeah- right." Well- he WAS right!! Our old AC ran nearly constantly and the new Lennox runs rarely and yet keeps the house evenly cool. I highly recommend this firm if you have work like this that needs doing! We will eventually have to replace our aging upstairs unit and I will hire them again without hesitation! read more

Our experience was actually outstanding with American Conservation & Air. We called 4-5 other companies when our 18-year-old A/C unit stopped working, and got the best bid and fastest service from American Conservation. It was over a weekend when the unit started giving out, and Kent Ambrose at American Conservation offered at no charge to keep us cool until the new unit arrived by adding extra freon (we had a slow leak but several companies said it couldn't be permanently fixed). He was politely persistent, not pushy, in trying to win our business by providing information on various systems, answering LOTS of questions, etc. We purchased a Lennox unit that is incredibly quiet and comfortable, at a price that beat all competitors. Kent also handled all the paperwork and scheduling of inspections with the city's rebate program and the city inspector said today that we'll get an $1800 rebate within a few weeks. Kent and his crew were polite, professional and on time, and they did an excellent job on the installation. Competent and responsive, and yes, I would recommend them to anyone. read more
