Yeah no... definitely not... We tried to give this place a second chance and went recently for dim sum on a weekend. The shrimp in the shrimp dumpling was not fresh and extremely overcooked. The turnip cake was COLD and undercooked - they went back to ?re-panfry it and brought it back still cold and did not taste good. The sticky rice barely had any flavor or meat in it. The rest of the dumplings were disappointing. Chicken feet and spare ribs were ok, but nothing great to go back for. Will not be going back. We'll stick to going to Great Tang, which at least is consistently good. read more

Mediocre at best. We came at like 11 and shortly after the restaurant filled up. They had only one cart going around without and the lady who was showing the cart didn't even offer all the options. She would offer 5-6 options and then when we ask about other dishes, she would be like "oh yea right here"... Happened like 5x. There were no fried dishes and missing ton of the classic dishes. For a full dim sum restaurant, it was extremely lacking in quantity. Don't get me started on quality, which was also subpar. The food must have been sitting on the cart for like 30 mins at least. The food was stuck to the bamboo and lukewarm at best. The soup dumpingvwas like stuck to the bottom of their aluminum tray. How is this place so highly rated? Overpriced, underwhelming food served in a space with questionable practices. Called to confirm dimsum was available on Labor Day. Upon arrival, there were 4 options available from the "hot" dimsum cart. Nothing looked or tasted freshly made. Even the hot tea had a peculiar aftertaste. Other parties seated for dimsum were equally disappointed with the lack of options. With slim pickings for dimsum, I ordered a flat noodle dish and a veg dish from the lunch menu. Neither were as expected. The sauce was just poured over the blanched flat noodles, not stir fried together. Not an ounce of "wok hey"...I've never seen it served like that anywhere. The sand in the water spinach provided extra crunch to the veg dish. While dining, I observed a worker walk out from the kitchen area while eating something held in his hand. He went over to a table with seated guests to remove a plate, and on the way back to the kitchen, continue eating whatever was in his other hand. This happened a couple times in clear view of the owner. If this is considered normal practice, what happens in the kitchen behind closed doors? The entire experience was poor. None of the dishes were appetizing. I came to satisfy my dimsum craving and left hoping I didn't get an upset stomach. Also the prices are excessively high. For 2 dimsum dishes and 2 lunch entrees with hot tea, total was more than $50. Compared to NYC where dimsum is aplenty, quality is not there but prices certainly exceed. I guess lack of competition is the reason for the high ratings. For those impressed with this place for dimsum or general Chinese food, I urge you to visit Ty Ginger in Dublin, OH or even Uncle Yip's Restaurant where dimsum is served all day by order. You'll be blown away in comparison...in taste, service and price transparency! read more

I can't believe I haven't been here before! While they had an American-Chinese menu, we went straight to the dim sum paper menu. Everything we order was excellent! Of particular note was the pork shumai (in English I think it was pork dumplings), custard buns, roasted duck,, and pineapple buns! We ordered over 20 items and all of them came out great! We actually ordered extra custard buns and baby bok choy because the first rounds were so great. The owners are very friendly and seem to love seeing new customers. They told us that the dim sum cart is on the weekends, (I believe they said 10am - 2pm but I would double check). While I'm excited about also trying the dim sum cart in the future, I'd go back any time for lunch and dinner! read more

We had an enjoyable time eating dim sum. This was a spur-of-the-moment event we had not anticipated to find in the area. We were looking for lunch, and this turned up in our search. We were super happy! The food was really good, and we had excellent customer service. I can't tell you exactly what we had, but we were greatly satisfied. Was this the best dim sum I had ever had? No. However, it hit the spot for someone who loves dim sum. I recommend coming here if you want a good meal for a decent price. Pay attention to the menu for what you're paying because your eyes can be more significant than your stomach, and the bill will inflate. First and foremost it has been the same family and chef since they opened all those years ago. They were in this corridor before it was one. There has been so much growth in the area I can only hope this will cement their presence for years to come. My son and I arrived mid day on a Saturday and they had a very nice crowd for the Dim Sum. My son and I love a few favorites so we ordered off the menu. Mine was the sesame chicken and my son had the chicken and broccoli. Always amazingly consistent. Best I have ever had. The friendly staff honoring every request, such as more rice please and extra dipping sauce. Thank you. We started with soups, egg rolls and dumplings. Simply fresh and delicious. I am amazed at how clean and warm the decor has remained after all these years. Anything less than 5 stars in this, you get what you pay for establishment,, would just not be right. I suggest dine in as the food comes out super fresh. For just a few dollars more than your local carry out Chinese, you get the real thing. Loved my dim sum experience at Grand Oriental. The staff were super friendly, and the owner even came by to say hi for a second. They had a great selection to choose from. I'm half Cantonese, so dim sum is very near and dear to my heart. I loved my experience here and would happily come back. The only thing that wasn't as good as I hoped was the 萝卜糕, but that's because it's not as good as the one my family makes (it's a high bar, so I don't count it against them). It's a great place to patron with friends and/or family. I recommend going with a group of people so that you can try more dishes. read more

Place has gone downhill... we went during Father's Day and that was an excuse, but the last 2-3 times we come here we left irritated. They kept skipping our table. Last time they didn't follow their path and today we asked for an item three times and the cart kept skipping our table altogether. Our water wasn't refilled and they never offered us tea. Not to mention, this place is getting more expensive... but it's hard to tell their tally system so it has to be on trust. However, a few times we ordered less and our bill came out the same. I had also asked for a different table and she told me no, it was for ten people. We had 7 and the table was the exact same size. Then she took 4 serving places off our table ... so it was set for 11. Dim sum was ok... but less variety than they used to and had to wait too long for some items. read more

We ordered the peking duck which comes in 3 courses (pancake which was more like a wrap that had duck skin, soup made with duck bones and had tofu/mushroom/some duck bones with meat, and then duck with cabbage (?) And other goodness) as well as Siomai and baby bockchoi. All was delicious but I gotta say the main course was amazing!!! So good. I went for the first time today to get egg custard tarts for carry out. The service was fast and incredibly friendly and helpful, talking to me about my favorite dishes and recommending new ones! Although the restaurant was packed the hosts were seating people quickly and efficiently. The egg tarts were absolutely incredible!!! No doubt comparable to the custard tarts I had in Hong Kong. First time trying this place. The staff was very polite and the decor was very grand. While waiting on my food, I could tell the staff and the regulars were on a first name basis which is a wholesome scene that you're in a good place. I ordered chicken fried rice, beef lo mein, chicken & broccoli and chicken mei fun. First, I really enjoyed the fried rice. So far in my few months of living here, this has been the best fried rice in Cincinnati. I found myself liking how they cooked their beef more than how they cook their chicken. Coming from northeast Indiana, We don't have any options for dim sum so my wife was very excited to find this restaurant on our way back from vacation. We arrived at the restaurant as they were opening up, and we were surprised to not encounter any large Sunday crowds. There was only two other tables in the restaurant that were eating dim sum at that hour. They do have the traditional pushcart dim sum, which you don't see any more. Give that there weren't many customers, It was very easy to get our food. I can't say that the quality of the dim sum was up to par compared to what we have in the Chicagoland area. Maybe it didn't seem as fresh or piping hot. Some of the dim sum were also incredibly expensive for what you got. Our servers were really nice however the owner who seem to speak Cantonese didn't seem all that friendly, and never even said hi to us, even though we speak that same Chinese dialect. We would like to give the restaurant another try at dinner time but it will have to wait for another time when we're in town. read more

We were in for a conference, and wanted a nice place for our last lunch together. Grand Oriental surpassed any of our expectiations! Their staff are lovely, not rushed, a traditional atomsphere with cloth covered tables, nice serving ware, and exemplary service made our experience. But the FOOD!! I have been to grand Oriental several times, and I have to say I really love this place! You walk into a very nice very big Chinese style restaurant with even the ceiling decorated. It really is beautiful. The food is consistently great. When you eat it, you can taste the freshness, and the first thing for me that comes to mind is that I am perfectly happy to pay more money for this food, because I am getting some thing that I am not getting in a buffet or even another restaurant. It's reminiscent of the Chinese restaurants of years ago that frankly I had been missing! And yes it's more expensive than the average Chinese restaurant but so worth it. The service is always excellent. At some point you'll probably have an owner bringing you food and asking how everything is. Whether you have one of their duck dishes or lo mein you'll be happy with your choice! read more

I usually eat at a place several times before sharing my honest and frank opinion. The decor is palatial (inside) and very clean. I think our servers name was Lisa, good English w/ Chinese accent. She was an absolute joy and my wife and I both love her personality. A lot of they're customers were Asian which said a lot to me. The food was top quality Asian/American cuisine. My almost 5yo is obsessed with dim sum. Anytime I ask her what she wants for lunch, I get "Dumplings!" as a response. While there are a lot of places around with gyoza or potsticker options, there are not a lot for shumai. I have driven past this place a million times without knowing it was there. It is hidden behind the Mike's Car wash but can be accessed by the light to the adjacent parking lot as well. We went today around noon. They have lunch menu options, but you can request the dim sum menu and everything is available. Since my daughter is not super adventurous, we ordered the pork dumplings (shumai), potstickers, and stuffed eggplant. I was able to try one of the potstickers, they were good, with a light pan fry on one side for texture. The ponzu sauce was also tasty. I am going to assume the pork dumplings were good bc my daughter wouldn't share. The stuffed eggplant was new for me. It was stuffed with a fried shrimp? filling. This was pretty good but a little heavier than I would normally order. So nice to find a dim sum option on this side of town. The employees were all really nice. I forgot to take pictures of all the decorations but they had lots of cool artwork and ceiling tiles to keep my girl busy while we waited. read more

Some of the best Asian food you're going to find in Cincy!! This place has been on my list for quite a while and today I came here to get some takeout after going to the gym. It is right off of Fields Ertel road tucked behind Mike's car wash. I got the spring rolls and the orange beef and the spring rolls were pretty good but the orange beef is what really soared for me! It was so flavorful, crispy, and just truly delicious. The host was so kind and was keeping me updated with ETAs for the food - and it only took about 10 minutes for me to get my order so it is PERFECT for a delicious lunch! Discovered this spot on a day trip to Cincinnati on the Christmas Day and totally get extracted by their dim sum menu. When I first walk in, the whole restaurant is full with authentic Chinese decorations. I came around lunch hour and they still have the dim sum cart lady pushing and serve dim sum. Their dim sum option is quite extensive and freshly made from the kitchen. From time to time, they will have a few special items that get feature and bring out separately. Our waitress was attentive and quick to respond to our requests. My kids can be picky eaters and they both cleared their plates and recommended that I give a 5 start review for this restaurant. Good Dim Sum in the Midwest is often hard to come by, but Grand Oriental pretty much nails it. On the steam cart, all the classics, pork spareribs, shumai, chicken feet, tripe (honeycomb and leaf), beef tendon, sticky rice, sesame bean paste ball, taro dumplings, and egg custard were all executed masterfully with zesty sauces that were reasonably seasoned. The honeycomb tripe and tendon were spicy. The service was extremely prompt and supportive of our newcomers' slow selection process. We were offered all different kinds of food options off the cart, including the full menu, from which several members of our party ordered. I would say this is the second best dim sum in Ohio, second to Li Wah in Cleveland, but theirs is not always available. I highly recommend. read more

First time here for dim sum. It was very good. We had no wait. Food came on carts fairly quickly. Prices are average. You can also order off the menu. I was here a few times many years ago for lunch. It was ok. The only negative per my wife was the bathroom was disgusting with an overflowing garbage can with xxxxxx on the floor and cobwebs everywhere. Looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a year. I hope the kitchen is not like this. Because of this I am only giving 3 stars. Otherwise I would give 4 stars. We left early afternoon. read more

Great experience, chasing down some soup dumplings. We arrived and were served in less than 1 minute! Loved how they were burning carts around with fresh food and their ticketing system. Customer service was excellent!! Sticky rice was great and dumplings etc were solid. Soup dumplings a bit small compared to A staple like Joe's Shanghai in NYC but still tasty overall. Came in from out of town, but we are very experienced dim sum enthusiasts having tried dim sum in many large US cities and in Hong Kong. The cart service is fairly authentic although not enough food came out on the day we went. Food was hit or miss. I wish I had a chance to try the classics, hargow, shumai, but they never made their way around to our table in the hour we were there. You could tell the workers were hustling.
