I've have Golden Chen several times now and I've noticed that their food overall tends to be under seasoned. I've ordered from here about 4 times and got different things and I've only liked one dish. It was the hot and spicy beef dish. Fried rice and chicken egg roll are pretty decent but I'm genuinely confused why so many people love the Lo Mein. It is VERY underwhelming. Everything is mushy, one note and under seasoned. I definitely don't think this place deserves 0 stars. It's overall okay. Staff is friendly, prices are decent and it's quick. read more

We really enjoyed our meal from here the other night! It was early Sunday afternoon, and my partner and I had some grocery shopping to get done and didn't want to cook. We decided to try this place, as we'd seen it a few times and wanted to go to Kroger anyway. The website was very clear about how to order, but we decided to call anyway to ask a few questions first. The person who greeted us was very nice and placing our order was easy. Our food was ready within 15 minutes! We sped through Kroger, and I walked right in after we checked out, paid for our dinner, and met my partner at the car. Couldn't have been easier! He got an order of orange chicken, which he said was very good, fresh, and had a some nice spice to it. I got the garlic chicken which I really enjoyed. It comes loaded with vegetables and had a little kick as well. Both came with white rice, which was nothing special but went well with our meals. I got two meals out of mine, while my partner could finish his, but was left very uncomfortable. We also split an order of fried dumplings, which were awesome! The pork filling had so much flavor, and we both said we'd go back just for those! The place looks unassuming from the outside, but if you need a tasty, quick meal for a fair price, this place is a great option. read more

The appearance of the place is pretty standard Chinese Restaurant look. Spacious but not too. The service was very quick and the food came out hot and pretty fast. I went outside of my normal Beef Lo Mein and went the Beef Mei Fun (it has rice noodles instead of wheat). I would have preferred a brown sauce (and if I would have thought about ,I would have asked), but it was quite good. For a little hole in the wall, it was VERY good. read more

I've ordered here probably under a handful of times and it does the job for my Chinese food cravings. There's not a lot of non-fast food establishments in the Eastgate area but at least I'm glad that golden chen exists. I've always done take out so far and I've never had any issues. The staff is really nice and the food is ready really quick. I typically would order the broccoli beef, orange chicken, and I ordered their noodles. My mom thought they were good so she really enjoyed it. The food is good and the surface is good, but nothing really spectacular. If you're craving just basic Chinese food - definitely come here. Meh. I stopped in for lunch yesterday with my daughter while shopping in the area. My daughter has gotten takeout from them a few times on her way home from work and warned me that it wasn't authentic Chinese. I was fine with that. Unfortunately, the food wasn't so-much Americanized as just bad. The lunch special goes through out the weekend and until 3 p.m. - so that's a plus. My daughter ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken and I ordered the Hot & Spicy Chicken. Both of us ordered the Wonton Soup, instead of an egg roll. It comes with fried rice. The soup broth was bland and the meat inside the wonton was a weird brown color. Not sure what was in it. My daughter's Sweet & Sour Chicken was the standard found at these types of places. My Hot & Spicy Chicken was just sweet & sour sauce with a squirt of sriracha in it. It was super, super sweet and tasted awful. I didn't finish it. The service was really quick and friendly. I used to love this place. After several disappointing experiences I'm done. The eggrolls taste premade with no interior texture, just mush interior with over used greasy oil taste exterior. Sauces are becoming overladen with sweeter and sweeter and now cloyingly sweet thick texture, overwhelming any freshness. Broc super satiated with sweet sweet sweet thick sauce in every crevice. I stopped in because I worked super late and this was one of the few places still open. I grabbed the fried dumplings and the king crap lo mein. The fried dumplings were decent, but had no crispiness to them. The crab lo mein was exactly what you would expect for $9...fake crab chunks with a spaghetti-like pasta covered in soy sauce. That said, adding the leftover sweet sauce from the dumplings, hot sauce, and soy sauce to it actually made it passable to my surprise. So if you are looking for basic Americanized Chinese food at 9:30 at night in the Eastgate area, this is definitely a viable option. read more

If you're looking for traditional yummy Chinese food and tired of chain restaurants, you'll want to give Golden Chen a try. I miss the mom and pop Chinese restaurants I grew up with in Southern California. They do offer dine in option which I did tonight. The decor is sparse but clean. The menu has everything you could want from shrimp, pork, steak and chicken Entrees. I'm just beginning to taste their menu but the Jumbo shrimp and garlic combo platter was delicious and affordable. The service was good. Servers are attentive and smiling (under their masks). I was overall super impressed with the quality of the food for the price. I would highly recommend this establishment for dine in or take out. As we were eating in, I noticed how quickly they turned around the online orders. When I do not feel well, I always crave Asian food for some reason. I had never tried this place, even though it is next to the Kroger I shop at, but the reviews seemed good. For the first time ever I used Doordash to order/deliver it, to save myself and my sick doggy from having to move. So for the purposes of this review, I have not been to the actual location, this is solely based on the food. I was pleasantly surprised at how hot the food arrived, even though, not thinking, I requested it during rush hour. I started with the soup... which was supposed to be Wonton Egg Drop... but was only Wonton. Clearly the restaurant error, not doordash? The soup was just ok broth. Wontons were al dente. At every Chinese restaurant I always order the Crab Rangoon. These were a decent version of such. The shells were nice and crispy, the cream cheese filling seemed fresher than most. The Shrimp lo mein was not very good. The shrimp themselves were and good amount of them, but the noodles did not have enough sauce and an odd flavor. The Hunan beef was ok. The veggies were fresh and crunchy, the beef was a little chewy, sadly the sauce was not spicy, not even a little bit. THE STAR here is the pork fried rice!!!!! Luckily this was the only thing I got a large portion of and it rocked. Good flavor, good mix of veggies and meat. My meal of course came with the standard fortune cookies and crispy noodles. I have been to China twice in my life, and so Chinese food holds a special place in my heart. I love it, and I've never found an American Chinese restaurant that has been quite as good (of course). This place comes pretty close, though. We ordered General Tso's Chicken, which came with fried rice and an egg roll, crab rangoon, and steamed dumplings. I don't have a lot to say about it, but everything was very good. The egg roll was crunchy and flavorful, the dumplings were cooked well, and the fried rice/General Tso's was very tasty. I was satisfied already with the food, but the price is near unbeatable. We paid an even $20 *after* tip, got a great meal, and we were both full. I still long to find that perfect Chinese restaurant in the future, but in the meantime, Golden Chen is a good place holder. read more
