My carryout order, chicken fried rice, no flavor two quarter size pieces of egg, one quarter size piece of broccoli, generous with chicken pieces but basic rice with no flavor for $10.95 I felt cheated. Generous chicken pieces in sesame chicken, again no flavor, one piece broccoli, and egg rolls doughy inside and could not taste filling, everything just mushy. Sadly disappointed, would not recommend and unfortunately will not be back. Also, chicken fried rice pictured on website was misrepresentation, my rice was not white, it was soaked in some flavorless brown sauce my guess during cooking because rice was dry. Having lived close to this place for years without trying it, I thought I'd give it a shot. I ordered combination fried rice; no way to screw that up, right? Wrong! First, I got chicken fried rice, no pork or shrimp (this after the owner kept shouting "combo fried rice" back into the kitchen). Other than a couple of shreds of onion, there were no vegetables either. Plus they charge an extra $1.25 to put an egg in it, and somehow managed to only get a tiny bit of it in the dish. How do you get less than a full egg? Finally, the portion was much smaller than all of the other places I frequent. First and last time for me. read more

Ordered 4 dinners and 4 egg rolls for Saturday carry out $50 order. Dinners were fine. 4 egg rolls are much smaller and not as good as before. Asked for soy, duck and hot mustard packs. Got lots of duck but only 3 hot mustard-4 egg rolls? - Cheaping out. Asked for extra fortune cookies. Old guy at front desk dumped in a handful. Good thing I asked, otherwise I would have had none. This place has been my go to Chinese takeout for years. I recommend the General Tso's. Order is usually ready in 10 min from when you call. Food tastes great and they include everything you would need in the takeout bag. Lunch specials are very reasonably priced. read more

China Island is a true hidden gem. This is my favorite Chinese place in the entire Cincinnati area. I was worried when it went under new management a few years ago, but there was no noticeable change in the quality, quantity, and value of the food. They now have delivery. I decided to order delivery because it was a cold night and I didn't want to leave my house. The initial order was placed at 5:45pm. 7pm rolled around and it still hadn't arrived, so I called to check in and they said they were busy and will get to it when they can. I understood because it was a Friday night. 8pm rolled around and the food still hadn't arrived so I called back, the individual I spoke to said "stop calling. Your food will arrive when it arrives" and hung up. I called back just to hopefully get a chance to ask my question and he said the exact same thing: "stop calling. Coming from a Chinese family and eating a lot of traditional Chinese food, I am not disappointed in their food at all. There's very few authentic Chinese restaurants in the area, so this is definitely my choice for Chinese food. Their Fried Rice is totally up to par with the ones I've had in China and maybe even better. Lo Mein is another one of my favorites. They also have very healthy options with the Moo Goo Gai Pan, which is a chicken and vegetables, and brown rice!!!! So excited to see another option besides traditional white rice. read more

To my surprise, the chicken which was fried decently was served over steamed vegetables which made it soggy ruining the prospects for a front runner in this category. I'd eaten in here for the lunch special a couple times and thought everything was very good. I was disappointed in a recent take-out order, though. The egg roll was about half the size as at other similar restaurants. No one really expects crab in crab rangoon anymore, but these had a skimpy filling of a sugary sludge. The sesame chicken was heavily breaded, and the broccoli almost too tough to chew. The sesame beef was most disappointing of all, largish clumps of breading with small pieces of chopped beef mixed in. The sesame sauce was okay, and the rice was fine. It's a little tricky finding this place, if you were to think that this was easily visible from Montgomery Road, as I did. Tucked in behind the Fabulous Frames and Art store in the Hosbrook Center, in the very back of the strip mall, is China Island. I will say from the outset, and being a regular at the Chinese take-outs in the area, that this stands on par with the other local Chinese fare. In other words, about average. About average (to a little high, relatively) in price, in quality, in appearance, in service, and in flavor. But that's not said in any derogatory way. Some highs, some lows, some average. My order was to go, and it had been called in ahead of time, at lunch hour, during a weekday. I was told "10 to 15 minutes", and true to their word, at the 15 minute mark, my order was ready. The gentleman working the counter was polite and efficient, and worked not only the to-go orders and the counter, but also the small(ish) dining room. I didn't really pay that much attention to the dining area, but I would say it holds maybe 24 or 25. The entry and waiting area is a bit small, but there are a couple of chairs, or you can sit at a table three feet away in the dining room. Upon arrival at home (maybe six to eight minutes), I unpacked my well stocked (three days' worth of meals) bag. I had ordered the Combo Lo Mein, a large Hot and Sour Soup - they make it meatless, (H&S Soup is my benchmark), an order of Chicken in Garlic Sauce, and an order of Fried Won Tons. There were sufficient condiments (4 soy, 2 duck, 2 small Sweet & Sour cups, and a hot mustard), as well as napkins, forks and a spoon. And to my delight, there was an order of Crab Rangoon slid in there, too. I don't know, perhaps they have a "Free order of Crab Rangoon" if you order above a certain amount. The Won Tons were cooked well, but the filling was really pretty flavorless. Typical frozen style dropped in the fryer type, or so it seemed to me. The Crab Rangoon was pretty good. Nice cream cheese flavor. Again, the typical fast food Chinese offering. I was disappointed that the Hot and Sour Soup did not fill the container, but was instead only maybe 75-80% full. I'm used to it touching the lid at the other local places I frequent. The soup itself was OK. Not really spicy, rather mild. I would order it again, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. It's meatless, tofu only. Not how I ordered it, just how it comes. A few red pepper flakes in there, plenty of tofu, bamboo shoots, and mushrooms. The Lo Mein was also just OK. It was a little dry for my taste though, and could have used a little more sauce.. There were plenty of "little goodies" in there, however. Chicken, shrimp, pork, beef, onions. All in all acceptable, especially with the sauce from my garlic chicken on top. The chicken in Garlic Sauce, mmmm. I ordered it with extra garlic, and they complied. Quite possibly the best dish I ordered. Chicken, mushrooms, snow peas, carrots, and broccoli, all bathed in a delicious, garlicky brown sauce. Mine was accompanied by steamed rice, which was, well, steamed. I would expect it to be OK, all things considered. So - Overall - OK. Nothing outstandingly great, or outstandingly poor. Not far from the Kenwood Mall, they are conveniently located to the freeway. They cater for larger groups, and best of all? They deliver. $10.00 minimum and a three mile radius. I'll have to try that one of these days when I can't make it out. They are the only one in the area that delivers, and at 2.5 miles from my house, I think I'm in luck. read more

Best egg foo young! As a real Chinese I don't really care for this type of Americanized Chinese restaurants. My friend brought me to China island one night and I ordered a shrimp egg foo young expecting the same ghetto dish I get from every other similar Chinese place. But I was surprised by the quality and flavor. We dined in. So my food was served hot and fresh out of the wok. The eggs were crispy outside and tender and juicy inside. Gravy was not too thick or too salty. And there was a lot of shrimp! It was definitely the best egg foo young I've had in Cincinnati. My friend had Mongolian beef and it was good too. The service is also worth a five star. The owner was very friendly and attentive. Food was served fast. Glass always got refilled. read more

We have lived in Madeira for 10+ years and were big fans of China Island for a long time. We have been making our own delicious food for the past few years and do not order out much these days. That being said when we crave a certain food and have had a busy day, we might order out and China Island was a trusted friend for great quick delivery (15-20mins max). We ordered Cashew Chicken and Chicken Pad Thai tonight and it took 50 mins (not a deal breaker on a Friday night) but the food was terrible... flavorless, dry. The Pad Thai was not a traditional noodle, more like an angle hair pasta and void of sauce, flavor and other than a bit of chicken, not much else, just a bowl of pasta for almost $10. My wife had her previously ordered cashew chicken and it was also lacking sauce and flavor. I have traveled the world and know American Chinese is not authentic, this might be (barely) all I can figure is they have a new chef and cooking traditional recipes, please advertise this as you may get some clientele, just don't disappoint your long time neighbors with whatever you have going on with your management. That being said service is always polite and delivers, not sure about the kitchen this time. I would not recommend them as of this date in any way. read more
