Eat family style! Well ...I have been thinking about getting here to try this place out for a few months now. (Side bar - Why is it that I "save" restaurants to
check out when clearly there are myriad opportunities to go and check it out and I keep saying every time I pass by...I'm going in there soon, then one day IT'S TIME) Not sure what made me decide finally to go in there and warm up a chair but I think it was the day, which was beautiful and sunny. If the restaurant turns out not so great at least I have the beautiful sunshine...oh...sorry...
Anywaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, I am not someone who sweats at the thought of BBQ, but the person I went with loves BBQ.
So, we are on the same page, beautiful day, really cute little restaurant and I'm in a great mood.
If you choose to eat in the restaurant (as opposed to take out) there are 3 choices, eat in the space you walk into, go out to a place that has a roof and there is an outside place. All are great choices.
We walked in at around 5:00 pm and quite a few tables were taken, there was a man in there who had just finished his meal and looked like he needed a cigaret (good), there were people waiting for take out (good) and there were police officers who looked relaxed and were enjoying their food (another good).
We were greeted, big smiles and I always love to see a big smile...got my table and the menu and had a look. So far so good.
They have a good selection of cute sounding drinks, like Swamp juice which is a mixture of Sweet tea and lemonade ...I hear it's popular. Or you can get Sweet tea or lemonade and the drinks come in these huge chilled jars, lots of ice. I LOVE that! Attention to detail is a real plus in my book. I got a beer, my friend got a Sweet Tea and we were both very happy at the way those drinks were presented. The drinks came back quickly.
okaaaaaaaayyyy ....the food right? Well to be fair, I did say BBQ is something I do not really go out of my way to find. We ordered a family sampler plate that they generously give you a sample of each one of the sides and that is one of the reasons I thought that would be a good choice. The sampler comes with some pork ribs, some links and some chicken legs and thighs and the menu says it is enough for two-three people and it IS!
Soooooooo we ordered and I mustered up some good chat, I was in a good mood and then I checked my email and then I checked the other diners who appeared to be having a good experience and then ....nope that's not our food...and then I noticed the condiments (which doesn't include Crystal sauce on the table) oh no...I'm starting to ...start in.
AH! The nick of time the FOOD...lots of it. Y'all do recall that I am from New Orleans which is in the south and in New Orleans, we eat red beans and rice as a staple dish, it's even got it's own day...MONDAY, that's when your MaMa makes a big pot of red beans and another big pot of rice. I can almost smell it now..but I digress (again, sorry) the beans and rice Gracie's serves is labled Southern but the way I've always eaten it is rice on the bottom, red beans ladled over that hot steamy white rice. This stuff was all mixed together and the first thing I thought about was "box" but I still tasted it and and ...yep "box" and it was cold.
The sides looked okay ...the cornbread especially looked good.
The platter with the BBQ looked great so we plated up. Then guess what, cold all of it. Not only that but the chicken was pretty much dried out. DAAAAAAAAAANG. I didn't want to send it back (um y'all know what they do when you send food back to be "warmed" right) so I kept my place and said "Oh no, mine is warm enough" ::big smile::
So when the waiter came, my friend said, he would like to have the food warmed up and the waiter said oh yes we will put it back on the rack or something as if they are not going to microwave it, which was good.
Tick -the effing- tock, are they like hatching it back there?
i finished my chicken (jerky) and ate a piece of cornbread and drank my beer.
The platter arrived HOTTTTTTTT so hot in fact that the waiter said THIS IS HOT...so my question is why is the plate hot..all you had to do was heat up the meat (my mind thinks things like that) so that means whatever method they used, it included the plate..
Well friends, while she was correct, it was HOT it was not any more flavorful than when it was tepid to cool. There just wasn't any smokiness...and the cornbread was a nice consistency (rough) but it was again very sweet.
The other sides, potato salad, coleslaw and macaroni salad were all just ...there. It appears they feel these things are not being given the flavor attention they deserve they are being served as if they are not really an important part of the meal but to me, these sides are almost as important as the main part of the meal.
We did take food home, too much to eat there but we still haven't eaten it. read more
