The restrooms were clean and well stocked. Allen was at our table appropriately and when we needed him. I ordered the Cajun Stuffed Chicken and it was awesome. Presentation and food temperature was impeccable. My wife and daughter ordered the Salmon Special med rare, and it was cooked to perfection. We ordered bread pudding to go. Our portions were so large we had to take part of our entrees home with us. Allen bagged our leftovers for us. It's been awhile since we have dined here. We are not on this side of town a lot. I will start with the positives: Hands down best cornbread I've eaten since my granny was alive. Collards were very well seasoned and delicious. Fried green tomatoes were great and the addition of feta was genius. One of the best waitstaff experiences I've had in years. Top notch. You must be wondering what went wrong to prevent a 5 star rating by now. That's easy. Super pricy. $150 for two adults and two kids for lunch is a bit excessive. Also, though my waitress was amazing and deserved every penny she got, I am not keen on "added gratuity" at all. When you do walk in everything floor to ceiling feels like you've walked in to someone's house just turned up to 11. We came on a cold day and they had the main dining room's fire place roaring, it's a cozy experience. Service continues the welcome home experience, everyone is polite and helpful, our server was happy to have us it felt. Food selection is as advertised, it's southern comfort food, so don't be afraid to get your calories in. There's a couple of sprinkles of Asian influence throughout the menu as well, for a change of pace. Everything we ordered was well seasoned, nothing understated. This was my fourth time visiting this restaurant, and while each visit has been great, this most recent one absolutely blew me away. I came to celebrate a friend's birthday, and our waiter made the experience even better. I can't remember his name, but he mentioned he was from Kenya and that his friends call him the African DJ -- and his hospitality truly stood out. I ordered the Cajun stuffed chicken with mac and cheese and the yams, and everything was seasoned to perfection. The food came out fresh, hot, and full of flavor. I have no critiques at all. A signature restaurant in the Carrabba's family, Grace's has been one of the many restaurants sitting in my bookmarks for years. It wasn't until a recent weekend that I found myself in town and decided to finally take the leap after hesitating for so long. My experience was beyond my expectations, so much so that I am still somewhat in disbelief writing this review. Located in Upper Kirby next to all of the other Carrabba's establishments, Grace's was named after Johnny's grandmother (#1) with a menu inspired by the international food scene that Houston has become synonymous with. From soul food flair to Cajun specialties, a nod to gulf seafood and faux-Asian dishes, and a bit of Tex-Mex and a slice of Americana, it is arguably one of the most eclectic menus in the city. It's a spacious restaurant, with numerous indoor and outdoor seating options. I appreciate the various themed rooms and the thoughtful decor from top to bottom. I even enjoyed the ultra clean restrooms with a dedicated mouthwash station, and the maining dining hall which gave nostalgic, retro, yet special occasion vibes. I've read the many decade-old service issues and current day long waits, but that wasn't at all my experience. I walked in with my group of hungry dining companions with no wait and received impeccable service throughout the afternoon. My waters were filled, my questions were answered, and accommodation were made. I had ordered so much food that they were able to take my existing table and expand it into a larger round table simply to make room for all the dishes I had ordered. There is a bit of a sticker shock when it comes to the ultra pricey menu but it didn't stop me from ordering a number of itsms, most of which was extremely tasty. I loved the smokiness of the carajillo cocktail, the excellent roux of the gumbo, and surprisingly tasty onion rings, and addicting yet incredibly salty baked potato queso. We had run out of chips and without hesitation the staff refilled with more chips. The banana foster pancakes was a nice mix of swéet and savory, which was only made better a la mode with the ice cream scoop. The fried oyster salad was surprrisingly hearty, and the Stuffed chicken was quite excellent despite being overpriced. I did really love the brussel sprouts, and would not order the collard greens next time. The creamy mash was served in a laughably small bowl and the Mac and cheese was expectedly indulgent. I do consider myself incredibly lucky and would not be surprised if the next time nodes a different experience. The service is impeccable. We were greeted in a very friendly manner upon entering. The waiters were very friendly and attentive. The food came out very quickly and hot. You receive a small skillet of cornbread that was so good. We ordered the small gumbo which is a very generous portion. It's a dark roux that is very flavorful and came out hot. A small Caesar salad and side of fries with a side of ranch. The ranch must be homemade, it tasted amazing. The fries were so good and the salad was a good Caesar flavor. I have zero complaints except the prices were a bit steep and the parking is valet only but we did find some street parking nearby. Though each restaurant is unique, they all provide such a great experience because their team/staff at the locations are simply the BEST. The truly care about every customer and will treat you like family! Unlike other restaurants, there is a high turnover amongst waiters, hostesses, and managers. Not with Johnny's restaurants. He retains the outstanding works because they are all part of a great team, and Johnny makes sure they know how important they are to the organization. My family went to Grace's yesterday. I've been here a couple of times in the past and enjoyed it. This most recent time I was not impressed by the food. I ordered Rosie's fried chicken, which was good but not great. It could have been seasoned a lot better. I have no complaints about the service. We were in a larger party and everyone's food came out exactly how they ordered it. And while in Houston, it was too hard to pass a good southern food place like Grace's. The venue felt warm and almost as if I was eating and someone's house in the south. The menu was great and filled with your usual comfort food classics. While I passed on the chicken fried chicken (nothing is better than Frenchy's) chicken near TSU/UH, I went with the Cajun stuffed chicken with a side of candied yams, and collard greens. Before the main entrees, I went with the sticky ribs and oh my goodness...absolutely delicious...I almost licked the plate! The entree was good, but I probably could have just ate a plate full of those yams as they were the bomb and at the level of my aunts candied yams we get to enjoy for Thanksgiving. The cornbread smothered with butter was delicious....and don't forget the banana pudding (might be better than Pappadeaux's) I do want to recognize the server as he was very attentive and we felt his service was spot on....if you see the Oaxaca old fashion on the menu, remember I put it there as I ordered one and apparently the bartender was thrown off a bit and he mentioned to the server he might feature that one on their menu....if you haven't tried one, stop by there and enjoy! read more

So, I must preference this review first by saying that I understand that restaurant have the right to choose who comes into their establishment and that dress codes are necessary when guest take advantage when they aren't implemented. However, restaurants should use digression when turning away customers or or make them wear a cheap Hanes T-Shirt under a vintage Sade Tank Top. Now, let me explain. I was at Grace's last Saturday the 12th with my family and son who was visiting from DC celebrating a family members B-Day. I'm 54 so my pants weren't sagging. I didn't have on anything ridiculous. Nothing old or ragged looking on from feet to forehead. Plus, there were women in the staff and several guest wearing white beaters, spaghetti straps. So, I was perplexed when the young lady couldn't understand why I couldn't I fathom her making a big deal me wearing this shirt. Long story long, my lady asked for the Manger who was very nice but gave me a cheap Hanes T-shirt to wear under my TT. Needless to say I was pissed but it didn't spoil the dinner. The food was good. I had the stuffed chicken, it was Flavorful and great potions but wasn't worth the interrogation over my shirt. Especially when half the restaurant was in tees, ball caps, shorts and sneakers. Moral of the story, if you're gonna have a "Dress Code", have a real one and if you're going to continue with the no guys with tank top policy you may want to make that for women as well before someone with time on their hands decides to file a suit for discrimination. read more

When I arrived at the restaurant, the hostess (Kelyn Allen) advised my reservation was for Friday night, not Thursday! Kelyn graciously immediately took action to ensure our group would be accomodated that evening. Kelyn Allen is an outstanding employee, her actions ensure our group had a wonderful evening despite my booking error. Our server, Walter, took great care of the group. Walter was friendly and had a good sense of humor. This made our evening even more enjoyable. Everyone enjoyed their dinner choices, Grace's restaurant always provides the finest dishes for their customers. My family and I celebrated my birthday and cousin here. We made reservations and we all arrived about 45 mins early but because it was so busy, we waited about an hour and a half. Eventually it got really hot out so we hung out in the bar area. Once our tables were ready, the waitress escorted us back. The area where we were seated was spacious and intimate. Perfect for our family as we celebrated my little cousins and I's birthday. The food was really good and I enjoyed the cornbread. The cocktails were amazing as well. The hostess doesn't smile and she gives attitude. The food is a 2.7 of 5 star, simply because everything is way too salty and over seasoned. I get that cultural ppl dine here, but oil soaked corn bread and drenched dressing salads is a bit much. It's unnecessarily unhealthy. I'm mad at myself for never having been here before. We came for Houston Restaurant Weeks to try it for the first time and yes I came after I had a medical procedure done because I had been NPO for 12 hours and was starving. Well listen, the portions they gave were huge not to mention the hot cornbread. We had to take part of our burger and gumbo home. First of all parking is easy. Valet is available but so is self parking in the garage which is barely even a walk to the restaurant. The service is fantastic. Water was always full and when I made an order change our waiter sprinted to the kitchen to get it changed. The gumbo had my heart. I didn't think I would find anywhere with a dark roux again but I was wrong. It was chunky and flavorful and the roux was nice and thin and super dark, just like I like it. The avocado tuna stack was tasty and the bread pudding was good too but really sweet. My husband's burger was fantastic. I got the baked potato dip for the appetizer and he had the campechana. I decided to randomly stop in at Grace's after work to wait out traffic and weather. Parking was easy in the structure adjacent to the building. There was plenty of seating in the bar and they had WiFi so I could finish up some work emails. I enjoyed the sticky rib bites to start, they paired nicely with the cornbread and honey butter. Next I had the tortilla soup which was probably the best tortilla soup I've ever had. I finished off with the lemon iced box pie which was cold, refreshing tart and sweet. The prefer dessert! I took home leftovers and I would definitely return. Secret tip - the bartenders will order from the Italian place Carrabba's - The Original On Kirby and will bring it over to you at the bar if you are feeling Italian food instead. I made a reservation in advance for HRW. I walked to the front area, and there were two women chatting who didn't even acknowledge me. The hostess didn't look like one. I thought she was a customer waiting to be seated until she came up to the laptop that was propped on the table. I told her I had a reservation at 7 pm. I was there 5 minutes early. When she checked me in, she told me there would be a wait because some tables hadn't cleared yet. I was fine, but the hostess said she couldn't tell me an estimated time to seat unless the whole party was present. I found that odd since I had a reservation, and it was only for two. So, I waited at the patio, until 2-3 minutes later, someone called my name to seat me. I waited for my friend who was parking in the free garage. Our server didn't introduce himself. He was assigned many tables. Despite that, he was so attentive and refilled our water glasses, my tea, and brought extra homemade potato chips for my baked potato appetizer without me having to ask. I found out his name through our receipt at the end of dinner. Shoutout to Bruce for excellent service!! For HRW, I tried their baked potato dip appetizer, Caesar salad, chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes, and split the bread pudding with my friend just to try. They gave complimentary jalapeño cornbread while we waited for the food. Jalapeño cornbread - This was delicious. It was served hot and fresh in a small cast iron skillet and a side of sweet butter. It was just crispy enough on the outside and fluffy inside. The sweet, whipped butter was so good paired with it. Baked potato dip - The dip had the sour cream or cream cheese mixed with the cheesy dip and was topped with bacon crumbles to simulate a baked potato. The homemade chips were like Ruffles, not some of them weren't fried enough to be crispy, which made it a little chewy at times. It's a good dip though! Caesar salad - The salad was drenched with dressing that some of the salad looked wilted and didn't have that fresh greens crunch. There were bits of large cracked pepper that if you got a taste of it, it was quite peppery. The garlic croutons crumbles nicely in a way that won't break your teeth. Lol. Chicken fried chicken (CFC) with mashed potatoes and jalapeño gravy - The CFC was a smaller portion for HRW, which I was ok with cause I was getting full from everything else before. The chicken was cut thin and nicely breaded with some crunchy areas. It wasn't overly salted. I appreciated the gravy on the side. It was creamy but had a kick from the infused jalapeño. It was good to dip the chicken in. The mashed potatoes were creamy and soft. It tasted good even without gravy. Bread pudding - This was $5 extra to the HRW dinner price ($39). You get a small piece. Instead of raisins, they use dried cranberries. The sauce is a sweet cream cheese glaze. The raspberries were an excellent choice to add tartness to the overall sweetness. The small piece was just enough to end the night with a dessert after the meal. Grace's stayed busy from our reservation at 7 pm till when we left at 9:30 pm. People were still being seated and ordering food. The music was hard to hear due to the volume of customers speaking. It seemed to get louder as the night went on that we had to yell talk even though we were in close proximity. I liked all the food equipment decor on the walls like different plating designs, silver serving trays, silver serving supplies, and the crochet doilies. The restrooms are fairly clean, and I like that they have mouthwash and cups for after dinner. The super hot towels and lemons were a nice touch to clean your hands. Their food wasn't out of this world, but it tasted good. Their food is a bit pricey for the quality or quantity, so I'm glad I got to try it for HRW. I would come back to try brunch or get more of that jalapeño cornbread!! Also, I'm a fan of Carrabba's, and this is one of their restaurants. read more

I've lived in Houston for 2.5 years now, and Grace's has been on my list for a minute. Folks mention it often when the topic of soul food comes up, but after finally visiting, I'd say it leans more toward Southern comfort than true soul food. The decor felt warm and cozy like your grandma's dining room. The magazine covers in the (super clean!) bathroom walls were a nice touch and homage to notable women across history. I came here with friends to celebrate Women's History Month, and the menu was expansive--like, I was genuinely excited by all the options. But unfortunately, most of what I ordered missed the mark. The Brussels sprouts, macaroni and cheese, and the stuffed chicken with lump crab and crawfish were all incredibly salty--so much so that it overpowered the actual flavors. And that's a shame because the portions were generous, especially the stuffed chicken. You could tell it wanted to be good, but the salt just took over. Now, the cornbread? That was the highlight. Jalapeño for a kick, balanced with a little sweetness--chef's kiss. The mac and cheese was a bit runnier than I prefer, but still decent flavor-wise.v Shoutout to our server, Casey Jo, who was lovely--attentive, checked on us multiple times, and made the experience feel warm even when the food didn't quite deliver. I didn't mention my disappointment while there, because my friends seemed to enjoy their cocktails (which were strong, thankfully, given the $18 price tag per drink). Another highlight: complimentary valet and free garage parking. That alone is a rare blessing in Houston and made arriving a breeze.
