Basic courtesies that were routinely extended to others--such as a greeting upon entering, the ability to make an appointment, and the offer of a complimentary beverage--were not extended to me. I observed these same courtesies being offered to other customers during the same visits. I am respectful, pleasant, low-maintenance, and I tip very well. I do not cause disruption, nor have I ever been anything but appreciative of the service providers themselves. When I respectfully raised my concern and expressed that I simply wanted to be treated the same as other customers, the situation unfortunately escalated rather than improved. I was later declined the ability to make an appointment altogether, something I had always been allowed to do prior to speaking up. It pains me to even consider the reason for this difference in treatment, but based on my observations, the only noticeable distinction between myself and those who were consistently treated with kindness and respect was race. This is not an accusation I make lightly, and I have never felt the need to raise race as a factor in service before. However, after repeated experiences and respectful attempts to address the issue directly, I can no longer ignore the pattern.
