Excellent sushi restaurant! We go to Gohan once a month on average. They are always on the mark with great sushi. Try the philistine roll, the crouching tiger roll and the carburetor roll. All are fantastic! Nice atmosphere too! Attentive service and you can either buy wine/beer there or bring your own wine for a small corkage fee. The only thing that cost them a star is that the menus are cheesy. It's a few pieces of paper stapled together that makes you wonder if they are going to survive. For the money you spend there, they should be able to afford proper menus. On the bright side, they are open on Thanksgiving and Christmas if you just aren't into cooking. read more

I'm a vegetarian who eats a small amount of fish so my view is that. I am very picky about the bits of fish I'll eat and it's always very very fresh and good here. Good quiet service. Best sushi in Petaluma! I love the pop nachos!!! We went back on a Friday and it was really good. My only complaint about this place is every time they ignore people who walk in. You have to practically flash em cash or boobs to get their attention-okay that part was a joke but honestly they kept walking by pretending we weren't standing there until I flagged one down. The melon fizzy soda is a big hit with people, especially my nieces. I LOVE the Unagi. We got the rainbow roll and another one called the Valentine love roll or something like that. 3rd visit. Love them! Friendly low-key staff. They are extremely professional. I can't believe this gem of a restaurant is hidden in a strip mall in Petaluma! All of my meals have been outstanding, fresh, perfect temperature. The presentation is hip. I giggle at the levitating fireplace with the computer screen inside. I DON'T CARE THAT IT'S NOT REAL FIRE! The decor is 60's mod, so the fireplace fits. If Gohan were in Napa, I'd be there once a week, at least! My teriyaki chicken bento box was perfect. The ring of fire sushi was perfect. Gohan is a great Japanese restaurant in Petaluma. I've been coming here with my family since they first opened and have never been disappointed. The quality of the food is always top-notch. I love coming here for lunch because of their lunch specials, which comes with a bowl of miso soup and a side of chopped cucumbers in a sweet soy sauce. I have had their bento boxes, and my mom especially loves the Executive Bento box which comes with tempura, California rolls (2), salmon, teriyaki steak, salad, and a bowl of rice. It's really filling and priced well. I also recommend their katsu donburi, and chicken katsu. I love their monkfish appetizer and the J-pop nachos. My favorite roll is the Marco Solo Roll. Their sushi is always so fresh and they have the perfect fish-rice ratio (I hate how some Japanese restaurants will have a large portion of rice in their rolls). I also like that they don't drown their sushi rolls in sauces to the point that you can't taste any of the fish or other fillings. Prices are comparable to other sushi restaurants. Japanese food is always pretty pricey, but I think the food here is worth it. The servers are also friendly and attentive. I pretty much go here every time I'm in Petaluma. Some reviewers have commented the service is slow when they are busy. I've noticed that but figure sushi can only be made so fast. For the most part the service is fast and food is great. i went with a large-ish party last time and we kept asking for special items, etc and the waiter happily brought fresh wasabi, hot sauce, more this, more that, etc,etc. There are off-menu items so you might want to ask. read more

I am never disappointed when I go to Gohan's! I didn't get a photo (this time) but the Green Bean Cocktail is always the way to go when starting out. My sister, my niece and I followed this delicacy with a Seabreeze Salad and each chose our own roll. A little hot Saki and my birthday lunch was complete. Quick summary: Good food, very good service, very helpful in terms of food allergies - my favorite place in Petaluma for Sushi. Longer version: After frequenting "Kybuki" for many years, we've made the switch to Gohan, and I'm glad we did. Our experiences there have been quite positive. In particular, when we asked about food allergies, we had a chance to speak to the manager, and the wait staff were willing to run down questions in regards to particular ingredients - they even have gluten free Soy Sauce (although if you ask for gluten free they will sometimes bring Tamari). Overall, the service is really good, food is delivered quickly, water glasses remain filled, and everybody is nice to deal with. In terms of the food, we've done combinations of Sushi and Sashimi, and for the kids we generally order the teriyaki chicken and/or the udon noodles - longer rice noodles in broth. Their teriyaki is a nice balance between salty and sweet, but not too sweet. In terms of Sushi, the standard rolls are good and pretty big - the spicy tuna (which honestly is not all that spicy) is really good, and we sometimes try items on their "new sashimi" menu including Albacore with jalapenos (which actually does have a good kick to it). In terms of the beer options, it's fairly limited but includes the small and large sizes of both Asahi and Sapporo. They look to have a decent (but not terribly expanded) list of Sake as well. I'm not a huge Sake drinker, so I can't comment on the variety. Casual environment and the sushi bar never seems raucous, so if you want to stand on chairs and drop sake bombs, this is probably not the right place. If you want a fairly mellow dining experience with good food and service, I'd recommend it. read more

Gohan is good. How good? Well, my parents really don't like sushi. My mother doesn't even care for fish...but when they come west to visit my and my wife, they specifically ask to eat at "that sushi place" one of the nights they're here. My wife and I have eaten at literally every sushi restaurant in town and many others across the country. We consider ourselves fortunate to live within a 10 minute drive of Gohan because it's seriously the best quality sushi we've had and it's available at a somewhat reasonable price. read more

I have pretty low expectations when it comes to lunch around work in Petaluma. It's hard to think gourmet when the whole town smells like cow dung. The other day I was really craving sushi and decided to give Gohan a try since it was right around the corner. It has pretty decent reviews on yelp and the decor is pretty fancy schmancy for farm country. The staff was friendly and attentive. So far so good... then I ordered the sushi bento box. The sashimi is cut too thick and was oddly shaped... like mini uncooked steaks. The surface of the slices glistened in that bad way resembling the inside of an oyster shell. White chewy bits of tendon were exposed along with a few broken blood vessels. I left those pieces alone and worked on the "safe" parts of my lunch... The California and spicy tuna rolls tasted like the ones you can get from Trader Joe's for a third of the price. I thought "sunomono" meant vinegar but there wasn't a hint of sourness to the dish. It tasted like cucumbers in watered down soy sauce. The salad too was mixed with a similar tasting watered down soy. Bleh. I'll take the $5 beef broccoli lomein at the Chinese takeout place next door over Gohan's questionable Japanese fare. read more

I'm very surprised by the positive reviews. The calamari was as tough as leather. I sent it back, and was charged for it. I had to actually ask to have it removed from my bill, asserting that it wasn't edible. I was told that the cooks checked it out and didn't see a problem with it!?! To their credit (??) it was taken off my bill after I asked. As mentioned in other negative reviews, the fish was cut far too thick. The sushi was just not good. It was mushy and at room temperature and not firm and cool as it should be. My wife's teriyaki chicken was also very, very tough. Add the bad sushi to bad calamari and bad chicken you have a really bad dinner. I could call the service good, but I'm not sure good service includes charging for a dish that was sent back, no matter what the reason. read more

What is this four and five star business? This place is mediocre, expensive, and forgettable. Jacked up prices and the attentiveness was terrible, it wasn't even busy! They sure took their time to roll up some rice and fish. Stingy cuts too! One bottle of Asahi, spicy calamari, Chef's roll, and the Spider roll= $50? Fifty dollar experience, more like $25! Stellar service and delicious sushi at reasonable prices. The ambiance is pleasant with nice, contemporary decor. Who knew a place like this existed in Petaluma, it felt like Ozumo's in SF. We tried almost everything, from specialty rolls to sashimi. Our son loved their gyozas & shrimp tempura, he ordered three back-to-back! The hamachi sashimi was the best I've ever tasted, so fresh! Staff are friendly...greeting you with a smile. They have a nice dessert menu with red and white wines to choose from and of course, SAKE. Upon request, they also have a gluten-free soy sauce. I would like to support local businesses, but not gonna support this one. First off, with less than 1/4 of the restaurant being busy early in the day, I had to wait 15 minutes for service. Not okay Lipstick on my water glass? Not ok. Got specialty rolls and an appetizer - everything was super sugary-sweet (and this is the savory stuff), doused in sauce, and I seriously doubted the freshness of everything. Freshness? Haven't eaten here in years and had forgotten how good third restaurant is. The food, the service. The ambiance, quite the gem of a restaurant. I had the Veggie 10 roll and The K-O Roll along with wakeme (seaweed salad) and sake. Delicious is all I can say! And I love that they serve water with a slice of cucumber on it.....so refreshing! Ever in search of the righteous way and outstanding sushi, I gave Gohan's a try. Here's what I found: ATMOSPHERE: The ambiance in this little storefront sushi joint is light, airy and comfortable. Their wall décor includes some large, colorful hangings that made me think of origami without actually being origami. The overall feeling is subtly Japanese without feeling like you've stumbled onto the set of Shogun. SERVICE: We were properly greeted upon entering, seated promptly, and our server proved attentive throughout lunch. She was also knowledgeable enough about their offerings to answer questions intelligently. No complaints here. FOOD: The list of Gohan's sushi offerings is long and interesting. We tried a traditional California Roll and a Dragon Roll (tempura prawns, cream cheese and avocado with tobiko on the outside. The Dragon Roll was tasty (although I didn't care for the crispy coating--purely a matter of personal taste), but the California Roll lacked "snap" and wasn't as pleasing as many I've eaten. Moving on to the main course, Gohan's menu offers most of the typical items you expect to find in an American Japanese restaurant, including all the teriyakis, a couple of tasty sounding salmon options, and a few udon dishes. I decided on lunch Combination Bento Box A (Chicken Teriyaki served with prawn and vegetable tempura, more California Roll, steamed rice and miso soup. It turned out to be quite a bit of food, and most of the items were pretty good eats. Gohan's Teriyaki sauce is the right blend to compliment, but not overpower, chicken and seafood. My lunch partner chose Salmon Teriyaki and agreed with my assessment of the sauce, saying the fish was well prepared and delicious. My only complaints concerned the miso soup (bland with only a few mushroom slivers, onions and tofu cubes) and the steamed rice (not sticky enough to stand up under even a light drizzle of soy sauce). VALUE: With sushi from $6.00 to $8.00 for the common ingredients, and on up to as much as $14 for some of the more exotic items, I would call the sushi prices reasonable if it weren't for the inconsistencies in the quality of the two rolls we tried. Lunch entrees range from $9.00 to $12.00 ($10 to $24 for dinner), and given the quality of our lunches, I call Gohan's prices reasonable--not a bargain, but fair. BOTTOM LINE: I place Gohan's in the top third of my list of best to worst sushi/Japanese restaurants in Sonoma County. I'll go back again, but Gohan won't be my first choice for Japanese food in the area. read more

I'm a frequent dinner. I'd love to be able to give Gohan 4 stars, but I do not understand why they don't use Dungeness crab. They use a mixture of snow crab and imitation crab. Dungeness crab is local, there's no reason not to use it. Or at least offer it as an upgrade, and charge customers more. I'd gladly pay for it. read more

This place has to be one of the most ridiculously overrated places I have ever stepped into, and the food was just plain gross and yucky--truly a first for me to experience because I have never tasted Japanese food that's been this hideous before. I prefer a more traditional Japanese dining experience over what they were trying to do here which I would categorize as "upscale industrial strip mall chic," and it's mind boggling and appalling how this place could be "Michelin recommended"--there is something really wrong with that. The food: I ordered a vegetarian bento box, which was full of the worst Japanese food I have ever ingested (and will hopefully be able to digest without any gastrointestinal distress) ,and the tempura was sloppily made and disgustingly greasy. They had fried vegetables which were equally terrible, and had piled a bed of stir-fried onions in the compartment, occluding a few pieces of some other stuff. In fact, some of the onions hadn't even been sliced right and you could clearly see outer onion layer skins, which are NOT supposed to be eaten--just basic "cooking 101" kind of stuff. There was also some retch-worthy deep fried tofu squares that were lying in a POOL of oil. Totally disgusting. One of the people in our dining party had gotten salmon and said one end of it tasted off, and was hoping that she wouldn't get sick. If this is the best that Petaluma has to offer, then they're going to have to try a hell of a lot harder than this. And as far as the "Yelp loves us" sticker goes.... HA! read more

We didn't really expect much from this place, but we were pleasantly surprised with the decor, food and service. Sushi rolls were on the smaller size, but were fresh. If you plan on going with appetizers, I'd recommend ordering a few to share- the agedashi tofu, tempura, and chicken karrage. My main order of mixed sashimi was billed as having miso soup and sunamono salad. I don't consider three half slices of cucumber in vinegar in a 2 inch square dish to be a sunamono salad! I was shocked to see how crowded this place was on a Friday for lunch, so I assumed it was going to be great! Boy, was I wrong. The service was really slow, but that was forgivable since it was packed. I ordered one of the sushi lunch specials. $15 for 4 sashimi and 5 nigiri, chef's choice of fish. Also came with a Miso soup and a sunomono salad. The sunomono was literally 5 of the tiniest slivers of cucumber, and mine had an added bonus of a hair in it. Still wasn't ready to right this place off. Finally got our sushi order and the dreaded thing happened - they put wasabi on all of the nigiri. I hate this. I should have asked when I ordered, but so many sushi restaurants I've been to lately have stopped doing this. Went ahead and ate what I could. The salmon was so bad it was inedible. It had turned. The rest of the fish was actually just fine, except for some white fish I didn't recognize that had a slice of mint under it. That was really gross. Wow! Everyone knows how I love to tear sushi bars apart. I have nothing to say but wonderful things about this place. Lets start with whats important 1-Food, Quality of fish for me is the utmost important thing at a sushi bar. Gohan not only passes with flying colors, I am still salivating over the best Toro($12) I have ever had in my life. 2- Service, I sat at the bar so my service came from my sushi chef. Chef Steve is awesome. He is extremely personable like you've known him for years. .....still salivating over the Toro mmmm... 3- Atmosphere- Bar none best atmosphere at any sushi bar North of San Francisco. It's both the kind of place you can go after work to drain a bottle of sake and a place where you take a girl to impress her. 4- Wine and Spirits- Although, they don't have a full bar, the sake and wine list makes up for it. They offer wines by the glass from Germany, South Africa and of course some of our prized Sonoma county's bests. All the sake I had was great too,but I dont know enough about sake yet other than what I had was smooth bodied with hidden fruits with a slight dash of pepper. Yum. Had dinner at Gohan with my husband last Saturday. Although food was ok (not great), the service was terrible. We were choosing between Gohan and Fuji based on recommendations on yelp. We initially planned on going to Fuji but my husband got turned off by the older strip mall location so we opted to look at Gohan which was also in another mall, but a newer one. Well, looks are deceiving. The service was terrible. It took 25 minutes for them to get our miso soup out. When I asked a waitress if they could at least bring the soup out as we were both starving, she was standoffish and told us she wasn't our server but she'll get it for us. Couldn't she have just said I will look into it rather than leaving us with the impression that we were bothering her? Food was ok but for the price I expected better. I had the edo chirashi sushi - presentation left a lot to be desired, and the variety was less than I usually get at other restaurants within the same price range and expected rating. One of the two stars was for the table helpers - the staff with the water and tea were on top of their jobs. Our water glasses were always filled without having to ask, and we saw that tables got cleared very efficiently by the same guy. We won't be coming back to this one. read more

Came here when visiting friends in the neighborhood so it's not my usual area. The flavors of the rolls are tasty enough but it's a little hyped. They're trying to be upscale without the quality to back it up. Serving things in martini glasses does not a gourmet make. And the service was a tad too slow. Sitting there forever to get menus. Then waiting to get our order taken. We ordered a few things from the new sashimi menu. I do have to say that the j-pop nachos were inventive and delicious. The Ahi tuna was fresh and yum as well. But when it came down to the fresh sliced sashimi with a simple sauce, meh, it was lacking. The slices were so thin that I couldn't taste the fish. So maybe I should have just ordered some basic sashimi instead. I've had better and lower priced sushi near me. So local I shall stay. read more

The bento box was huge (and delicious) The decor was okay (and delicious) The guy seated at the table next to us ranting about how Obama is destroying the country was irritating (and annoying) Gohan thankfully is not a Persian restaurant, as the name can be translated to something not so nice in Farsi.
