Came here when visiting friends in the neighborhood so it's not my usual area. The flavors of the rolls are tasty enough but it's a little hyped. They're trying to be upscale without the quality to back it up. Serving things in martini glasses does not a gourmet make. And the service was a tad too slow. Sitting there forever to get menus. Then waiting to get our order taken. We ordered a few things from the new sashimi menu. I do have to say that the j-pop nachos were inventive and delicious. The Ahi tuna was fresh and yum as well. But when it came down to the fresh sliced sashimi with a simple sauce, meh, it was lacking. The slices were so thin that I couldn't taste the fish. So maybe I should have just ordered some basic sashimi instead. I've had better and lower priced sushi near me. So local I shall stay. read more

Had to have sushi on Sunday night...and back to Gohan (for the 4th time, so far). The small plates are world-class. The ankimo plate was off-the-charts one of the best dishes EVER. And the tuna tataki was not far behind. Then, there's the house-smoked salmon nigiri -- OMFG! Lee, the sushi-chef/owner, is attentive to every detail on your plate. And his skills shine through in every dish. This is sushi that is elegantly prepared and presented with incredible skill and care. Exactly what a high-end sushi restaurant should be. I've probably been to Gohan twenty times since it opened, but I haven't been recently. Tonight I ordered takeout with my favorite: Ring of Fire and it wasn't very good. The tuna on top looked like chopped up leftovers from yesterday and it didn't taste good. I also had a spicy scallop roll which was okay, but bland. I tasted more rice than scallops. Sorry Gohan, I've been a big supporter but I'm going to take a break for a while. I'll repost if my next experience is better. read more

This place is far from bad, but calling it the best sushi in Sonoma County is a stretch. The prices are the same as Hiro's, but the decoration isn't nearly as kicky. Still, it has a sleek, modern dining room complete with orchids (no booths, it's pretty open). Cucumber slice in the water is a nice touch I'm taking home with me. The sushi is prepared fresh behind a bar, and, it is pretty damn good. The menu is definitely more American-ized than a few other sushi places around (sunomono in a martini glass? Cute, but then all the vinegar sinks to the bottom!). I think they even have a burger on the menu, so you can drag your non-sushi loving friend along. Service is prompt, not pushy. I just can't stand that open-air dining room feeling with my sushi. read more

What a discovery! I have been bouncing from sushi restaurant to sushi restaurant, looking for something extraordinary and leaving disappointed. I think i have eaten at all other sushi joints in town, NONE of them come close to comparing to Gohan. I've had a weak spot for this place ever since Steve, the late owner, came into the Kinko's where I worked at the time. Gohan was just getting started then, and he needed to run off some copies of the menu. Nice guy. Very patient and good with small talk. When you work at Kinko's you learn to appreciate those kinds of people, since they make the job a little more enjoyable. I've visited Gohan on several different occasions. The first time was during their opening week. Steve came to the table himself to pass out the menus and make recommendations. My aunt, amazed by his knowledge, complimented him. When he replied that he was the owner, she was visibly impressed that he interacted with his patrons. I silently wondered if there was such a thing as a sushi restaurant with a homey atmosphere. The last time I visited was this past weekend. This was also my first visit after learning that Steve had passed away. It's strange to remember chatting with him over the drone of a copy machine, or to recall how he went over the fine details of his sushi selections, while knowing that he wasn't around anymore. I wonder if he envisioned his restaurant to what it has become: an accessible fixture of Japanese cuisine in Sonoma County. I had the Chef Steve special. It was delicious. read more

This place is my Go-To for a rainy day! The sushi is middle of the road, and honestly if I want sushi or sashimi I'll head to Hiro's instead. But the kitchen at Gohan's just can't be beat. Their noodles are delicious, this is the ultimate "sick food". My other 1/2 spent some time in Japan and basically lived off of the little hole in the wall noodle houses and he constantly says how Gohan's food brings back those memories. read more

My family had a great dinner here. Their specials for the weekend (mackerel, sardine, and toro) were unfortunately sold out, but the sushi chef recommended the anago and the kanpachi, and both were beautifully prepared and delicious. We also had a spicy shrimp appetizer, which was tasty but oddly reminded me of the Mexican restaurant my parents would take me to as a child. My wife and I split an order of "over the top" tempura, which includes several pieces of seafood. Given that we only had to shell out $17 for it, it wasn't truly over the top, but the whole fried soft shell crab that came with it was delicious. The speed of service was a bit off. I probably should have asked them to ask the orders for my 2-year-old, who's not big on waiting a while to eat when she's hungry. But she certainly enjoyed her unagi and tamago (and some of my anago). Everyone left happy, and if you're a Petaluma local, I would absolutely give it a try! read more

I had lunch here today and the service was great as was the food and atmosphere. I had a delicious spicy shrimp tempura appetizer, salmon bento box, and I tried the dragon roll and sashimi. Just went last night and was pleasantly surprised. It's in this weird shopping center, but once you're inside, the atmosphere is lovely--modern and airy. Quickie lowdown: super friendly and helpful wait staff, decent sushi. Details: They give you a nice hot washcloth when you sit down. I always love that. The music was *great*. Elvis Costello, Madeleine Peyroux, Roxy Music, etc. Hip without being overbearing or pretentious (actually, that sums up this whole place quite nicely). I'm used to getting sushi in SF, so I can't say the food here was mindblowing, but it was very good. We ordered rolls--the Hula Girl (hamachi, basil and macadamia nuts), a Rock-n-Roll, and the Napolean Dynamite. Holy crap was that good--a tempura roll with unagi, crab, cream cheese, and something else. And just to make sure you know that they don't take themselves seriously, they serve it with a couple of tater tots on the side. Sweet! They even have a roll called the Philistine, so I'm guessing sushi snobs will turn up their noses to this place. We were *stuffed* when we were done. Oh yumm!! Gohan is the only place I will go in Sonoma or Marin County for sushi. I LOVE sushi, all of it- from California rolls to nigiri & sashimi and everything in between. I have tried many sushi restauants around here and always come back to Gohan- Im done going anywhere else! I moved here from Santa Barbara, where there were a few really good sushi spots I loved, but here there is only one. Even comparing to some nice upscale places in sf, Gohan wins my vote by a landslide. Gohan has the absolute freshest ingrdients and the best specialty rolls. Amazing appetizers and an extentive sake menu. My boyfriend and I go there about once a month to get our sushi fix. I like to try many different items on their menu, but my constants there have been the seabreeze appetizer (fresh snow crab pilled atop seaweed on a martini glass), crispy spicy prawns (deep fried prawns with a delectable sweet and spicy sauce coating), ahi poke (hawaiian style ahi poke with macdamia nuts and wonton chips), crab salad nigiri, salmon nigiri, yellowtail nigiri and the marco solo roll, among other specialty rolls. Another thing that shows the quality of this restaurant is that they do not ever use immitation crab- it's all the real deal. Most all their chefs are from Japan and know just how to make everything perfect. Anyone I have ever taken as a guest to Gohan for the first time loves it. I dont know what to say about any semi-negative reviews on here other than I have always had a pleasant experience and amazing food at Gohan- try it out for yourself. I really dig this place. Was never a huge fan of tempura-based rolls, but I found myself trying them here.... they offer a plethora of specialty rolls, all of which are knock-out! They're nigiri sushi is also quite good (if rolls ain't how you roll). This is our favorite Sushi place in Sonoma County, its super clean. The staff is very helpful and friendly, the sushi chefs are great at communicating things we might want to try. It's also family friendly. The owner is very pleasant and takes time to say hello to his customes, which is a class move. I found Gohan on Yelp today and what a wonderful place. I got lucky because it was very close to the hotel. The restaurant was beautiful with the white table cloths and art on the wall. Our waiter was very prompt and professional. My wife and I both had the New York Steak Teriyaki and tempura and the portions were generous and delicious. I was very pleased with total experience. The prices were a little high compared to San Jose Japanese Restaurants however the quality exceeded my expectations. Try it , you will enjoy it. read more

The customer service is impeccable at Gohan's, and the food is great. Our water glasses were never empty, and the food arrived at light speed. The staff is incredibly friendly, but never close to the point of being overwhelming. Its a great place for an intimate date or a large group. We ordered the Miso soup for starters which comes with a fantastic little mini cucumber salad. For the main course we had an Alaskan roll, a Carburetor, and the Chef Steve. I was thoroughly surprised by the freshness of the fish. This place is a total time saver, and won't put a huge dent in your pocket. When I moved to Petaluma I tried sushi all over town! It was the bag boy at Trader Joe's who sent me to Gohan one evening and now I am completely hooked! The sushi chef is extremely knowledgeable and the service I received sitting at the sushi bar felt like I was VIP. EVERY thing prepared by Chef Lee was delicious (see pics)! So they had literally 1 minute left until we got up to leave.... we went there on my birthday cause I wanted Sushi... and it was a new place we wanted to try.... We get there and there are about 8 other people there.... but as we sat there for 15 minutes (before we even got WATER) it started to fill up... The capacity of the dining was probably 70 people max... they had TWO SERVERS!!! One of which didn't really speak a sylable of english... so basically we figured out they had ONE SERVER for the whole damn place! After not taking an order, bringing water, drinks, anything for 14 minutes we were getting ready to leave when she finally came... we ordered everything right away cause we could see that this was NOT going to be a quick process.... and there was now more people in there... the food that came was good.. solid seaweed salad.. got a sake and she never offered any more drinks... in fact she just disappeared (of course.. she was the only one there) the food was solid so that got two stars but the service was 0 stars.... rolls were good and presented well but EXPENSIVE!!! read more

Service can be slow. And at first I was a little put off that I had made a reservation and when I showed up there, my table wasn't ready, but the sushi there made it worth it! It's so good. Probably the best in Petaluma. My parents and I used to go to Rohnert Park, but considering the gas, this is probably more worth it! I would definitely recommend it! read more

I hate leaving bad reviews but I strongly feel this place doesn't deserve 4 stars. The girl from Lagunitas recommended this place and we went because it was across the street. The restaurant was basically empty we were seated immediately, waitresses didn't seem too pleased but it didn't bug me but what did was... taking note of the expensive $16 rolls you can easily find in the Bay Area for cheaper but it gets worst. We pursue buying 2 $16 rolls thinking are money will be well spent but we were wrong. The wait for food was about 25minutes and there was barely any customers there but when we received the rolls, they were SO TINY like it was a prank. I've been to at least 100 sushi spots all over and never seen anything like it. They did give us free mochi for the wait but overall I am very disappointed by what we received I won't be returning. read more
