When I think about the place that I want to go to for a relaxing hot beverage, some delicious food with a low key ambiance or a place to get together with friend, Sarmentine is absolutely at the top of my list. You really can't beat the quality of the ingredients here- I have yet to have something from the pastry case, the breads, the warm foods or drinks that I didn't enjoy. Every visit I have had here has been delightful, and I always marvel at the consistent quality of the foods. On my birthday for example this past month, my husband took me here for a breakfast celebration, and then my dad took us there again the same day for lunch. Does that sound like a problem? Not at all! I was delighted. During the Christmas time, they even had a pianist playing live music during the dining time with all their trees and lights and decor- it was truly magical. Usually when I visit, I go straight for whatever they have in their tart offerings. My current favorite is the pistachio tart, but their passionfruit tart is equally incredible. Their set lunch with their soup, sandwich, latte and pastry is such a delicious good deal, you will love it. Prices are absolutely on point for the consistency and quality, as well as the gorgeous presentation. Yes, you're going to be paying more than if you were at, say, Starbucks... but the high quality of these ingredients are worth it every time. I just can't recommend it highly enough. We found this place while trying to find locally-baked rye bread. The bread went well with the borscht lunch we were planning. But we did have to order it ahead of time! The pastries are gorgeous and delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed them with coffee. On a negative note- cashier gal was discombobulated, scratching herself a lot and wiping her nose frequently. I've been meaning to try Sarmentine for quite awhile now and I finally did this morning with a friend. If you go early there are lots of different pastries to choose from. They have sweet and savory pastries, a large assortment of breads, cakes to order and even a day old bread section. I love pumpkin drinks and pastries so I ordered a pumpkin spice latte with oat milk and a pumpkin croissant. The latte was made perfectly and the temperature just right. The pumpkin croissant had a flaky crust on the outside and a decadent pumpkin pie filling in the middle. The hard working staff were friendly and answered all of our questions. I also got an almond fruit tartelette, a Trianon (chocolate cake), and a day old sourdough loaf to share with my family. It is located inside a small shopping center with parking in front. I'm so glad that they decided to open their second pastry shop in Petaluma! Located right across from Brigette Bistro, I feel like this section of the city, is becoming like French Quarters. I love their Millefeuille! It's so flaky and the rich custard is so heavenly. Adore their eclairs. Croissant is on point. I wish it was a bit fluffier inside. Paris brest is solid. I prefer it to be softer on the dough. Pavlova was pretty, but not what I was expecting. It wasn't doughy nor would I consider it a pastry. It was like a sweet crunchy foam crust bottom and citrus fruits on top of it. They have fresh bread and savory items, such as quiches and sandwiches. Service was friendly and adequate seating. There was a line, but at least it was moving. Can't get enough of their lovely pastries! Will return to try others. read more

Very good espresso drinks and baked goods. Great selection of sweet treats and a few savory options like quiche and sandwiches. Make sure to get a loaf of fresh baked bread or a baguette on your way out. They have a few gluten-free items as well. Large, airy, sunlit space with chairs and booths but it can get a bit loud from conversations. There aren't any power outlets near the tables or booths so be prepared if you bring a laptop. There's currently one all-gender bathroom while they are redesigning the two bathrooms. Parking is easy on either side of the building. read more

Wonderful selection of beautifully baked goods. Apricot and chocolate croissants were delicious, although the chocolate one was seemingly over baked. It was so crunchy that it fell apart upon biting into it. That was a little disappointing as I'd specifically come here because of a friend's report of "the best chocolate croissant" he's ever had. We grabbed these items to go but the shop was cute and had some fun (yet totally overpriced) gift items and grab-and-go stuff. They serve brunch so might consider eating in on another visit...if we come back at all. Knocked a star because one of the two ladies behind the counter was super rude and off putting. The other one was very lovely but honestly, the rude-factor was enough for us to take our baked goods and get the heck out of there. read more

After my sister brought me a canelé from Sarmentine to try, I knew I had to visit and explore their other pastries--and I wasn't disappointed! As soon as we walked in, I was pleasantly surprised by the bakery's inviting ambiance. The space was clean, and all the pastries on display looked so tempting that it was hard to decide what to order. I eventually chose a chocolate and cream croissant along with four canelés. Everything was absolutely delicious! The flavors and textures were spot on, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout my visit. I know it's weird but when I travel, my first thought is not how much it's going to cost or how I'm going to get there, but where am I going to get my croissants. I'm on a six day trip to eat myself silly and wine country. Driving through Petaluma early on a Sunday I found this place listed on yelp and it's glorious. The one thing you should probably never eat at any bakery is the thing I'm addicted to of course. It's the almond croissant, which are just piles of sugar and butter. Oh, and ultra processed flour. But my God, they can be delicious and the one I got here was one of the best. You are going to get dirty when you eat this but it's worth it. The coffee was really good too. I also got an olive red , but that's for later when I have a nice bottle of wine and a hunk of grape cheese. read more

We stopped by this place on the way to apple picking in Sebastopol. We got their almond croissant and chocolate almond croissant. I've never had anything so flaky and this freshly made before. Cappuccinos, cortados, Americanos, chai lattes, and matcha, all proudly poured with Straus Organic Milk and handwritten with elegance on a gilded chalkboard. This new bakery has a surprisingly large footprint for the amount of offerings it currently has. I ordered a croissant, a chocolate eclair and a box of gougeres, the latter to be picked up in two days. The croissants were flaky and buttery. At $5 each, I was glad they were yummy good! Surprisingly, no one but the baker knew what gougeres were or how to price them. Nevertheless, they were resourceful and pivoted quickly to find answers. I ended up buying a dozen for $25 as this is how the little savory cheese puffs are sold here. Their quality was good but the puffs were slightly over baked. No one I shared them with complained, lol and were happy to have more! The ambiance is wide open with a few tables and chairs. It needs some development to make it comfortable with an international feel. I'll definitely be back to see how things have changed over the next few months. Plenty of parking available. read more

We usually go in the afternoon and there is still usually a decent selection, but like any fancy bakery when they run out of an item, they're out for the day. Finally stopped by here yesterday and got a variety of things to try ($76 worth!) and it was well worth it. Some things were better than others, but all were pretty good. The eclair- the choux pastry was too thick in my opinion, it was VERY STURDY. Like it could have held something up on The Great British Baking Show sturdy. And maybe slightly over baked? But the chocolate cream inside was absolutely delicious, as was the chocolate on top. I ate the entire thing. The lemon tart - perfection. The crust, the tartness of the lemon. All of it. Perfect. (I had a lemon tart in London last week that was absolutely flavorless so this was a lovely balm to that!) The chocolate croissant- my son inhaled it and said it was very good. He's the expert! The regular croissant- it's a day later and it seems soft to me, so maybe it was crisper yesterday. I only tried a little piece. It was buttery with lots of flakes of lamination. But not super crunchy. I tend to only like them in France. The pain au raisin - crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. Lots of raisins and cinnamon but not too sweet. My husband loved it. The baguette - a bit disappointing. The flavor was very good but the texture on the outside wasn't giving me classic baguette like it hadn't been steamed in the oven. It was more like regular bread baked and pulled into a long shape. Again, good bread but not a classic baguette. The lemon cake and the lemon/blueberry cake - yum! Perfect and moist. Not too sweet. The best pastries I've ever had! It was my first time here and it did not disappoint. The 2 pastries we got made me feel like I was transported to a different place. The Saint Honoré pastry reminds me of crème brûlée and it's absolutely worth the $8. For 2 huge pastries, we paid $15. These pastries are not like your usual donuts or danishes! The fillings are so creamy and the pastries are so fluffy. I've seen many reviews complaining about their service. I think it's easy to forget that this business is in its "soft opening" phase and is still trying to get everything together. Today I was told that they were short staffed, which explains the line out the door. I think the service was great and they are working the best they can with the large volume of people coming in. The entire place was clean and organized. If you're coming to visit and support this local business, expect a wait and be okay with it. Popular French Bakery. Get there early, expect long lines. They will run out if you're too late. We tried a few different pastries and really enjoyed most of them. The croissants were incredibly flakey and crispy. Some of the filled pastries were unevenly filled, which is a disappointment when your chocolate or your fruit filling is all on one side. On the other hand the apricot custard croissant was absolutely devine. One of the best I've ever had. All of the pastries had perfect bakes, with firm crusts on all sides. The cafe dining area feels open with lots of seating, and many windows for good natural light. There's even a piano in the corner which adds to the ambiance. There is plenty of parking. The patisserie case was tempting, but I will have to try those another time. Their bread selection is quite respectable and picked up a baguette which I'm looking forward to digging into later. I LOVE this place. I felt I should write a review at some point given how often I go here. I have been working from home and this is the only bakery/coffee shop I go to to get my work done. I live in Petaluma and it has been hard to find a place with a nice ambiance, good quality food, and good service to work in. I was so excited to try this place! Came a little early and there is plenty of parking on either sides of the bakery. Very spacious with plenty of seating. It's clean and organized. I walked around for a bit looking at all the delicious desserts, pastries and breads. So beautiful! I ordered a 12oz hot coffee, no cream and no sugar to go. I grabbed a bag of day old pastries which I was excited for. I also ordered the lemon and pistachio tarts and a slice of lemon cake to go as well. Service was quick and they were friendly. I was able to sit and enjoy the coffee, but my cup was leaking. I assumed perhaps it may have been the lid not being secured and didn't think about it further. I enjoyed one of the day old pastries (couldn't help myself) and it was delicious! Should have grabbed another bag, especially for the price. What a great deal! I was on my way to work and I should have asked for another coffee cup because mine kept leaking throughout the morning. The tarts were very enjoyable and the lemon cake was a perfect treat. Visited on 8/23 during a short road trip with my sisters. While the pastries were tasty, the service left a lot to be desired. We arrived around 2pm--an hour before closing--and it was clear the staff was more focused on cleaning up than on serving customers. We stood at the counter waiting to order as several employees walked past us without acknowledging we were there. When we were finally helped, the first employee--though friendly--seemed distracted and couldn't remember our coffee order. Before sitting down, we also had to clean our own table, as no one had wiped it after the previous guests left. This added to the overall sense that customer experience wasn't a priority. Later, when my sister went up to place a second to-go order, she was completely ignored. She stood in the exact same spot we had ordered from earlier, but the second worker skipped over her to help customers who had just walked in. When my sister politely pointed out she'd been waiting, the worker snapped that she was "standing in the wrong spot." How is anyone supposed to know where to stand if there's no signage or clear system? Overall, the staff seemed miserable and uninterested in providing a welcoming experience. Sadly, despite the good pastries, the lack of basic courtesy and cleanliness means we won't be returning. read more

I've loved Sarmentine from their start in Santa Rosa & constantly recommend them to friends and family so no complaints at all about the quality of their baked goods. But... They really must take a close look at staffing, especially during the morning rush. When there's a long line of customers and there's just one or two people working the counter, then a customer orders coffee ...then guess what? Yep, you now have a long line of pissed off customers that just keeps growing because now there's even fewer people left to serve customers. Some of your customers are retirees that can enjoy a leisurely cuppa and a croissant and that's great. But most folks probably have a morning commute still waiting for them and need to race off to work. Suggestion...maybe hiring a shift manager would help? Or If not, perhaps a bit of employee training would be good. read more
