We started strolling by all the different stands and offerings and then there it was the Trader Jim's Tiki trailer. We couldn't wait to get a taste of their pineapple whip! Trader Jim's was the first "ice cream" I tried at the Spark Social food truck ice cream event. The dole whip was $5. While I don't think it was exactly the same as the dole whip served at Disneyland and Disney World, it was good enough. But anyways, I got to try out a bit of their pineapple juice and pineapple whip at the recent activated charcoal food festival and it was great. The line and wait were absurdly long being that it was a hot day but I could understand why. Their pineapple whip is very refreshing on a hot day. Their juice was okay, but being that they seemed to be low on ice that day, I think it would've much better at a colder temperature and would give them a pass on that. Trader Jim's has revived the Dole whip that was popular at Disneyland, complete with a nostalgic trailer&chalkboard menu. Be sure to check their website for their schedule- they are closed on Sundays&Mondays, they are at Petaluma's Farmer's Market on Wednesdays, and on Thursdays, they are at the Sonoma Development Center near Glen Ellen; they're also at special events. The Sonoma Development Center has an awkward parking situation- it's best to park along Arnold Drive. They have friendly, quick service and make a wonderful Pineapple Whip. At $5 it's a deal. Since the soft serve is made from coconut milk, it's lighter than the dairy kind. It's vegan&one can call it an Orange Julius kicked up several notches. On a hot day, it made an excellent dessert.... and it sure beat paying Disneyland admission! It's a magical treat. I've had Trader Jim's twice now at the Rohnert Park Friday night farmers market while visiting family, and both times I've gotten their Dole whip floats. These things are ADDICTING! I like the pineapple soft serve and the Dole pineapple juice together as the float, but you can also just the the pineapple whip by itself, which my husband prefers. Since we just visited Disneyland, I can easily say that these are way better! I find them not as acidic, and they don't have the small ice bits like Disneyland's does. They also give you more whip than Disneyland does! They're also DAIRY-FREE and VEGAN, which I really appreciate because I'm lactose-intolerant. I discovered this adorable Shasta food trailer at the Barlow in Sebastopol. The trailer itself is eye-candy! The pineapple soft serve is the real deal! Better than Disneyland, and I love Disneyland's dole whip! I've even been to the Dole plantation and had dole whip there, and this really is it! My favorite is the dole whip FLOAT, I like to take a bite of the pineapple whip, then a sip of the pineapple juice, then mix it all together to make a dole pineapple smoothie! I came across Trader Jim's at the SOMA EATS festival, celebrating National Ice Cream day. Of course it's cute little truck design caught my attention and who can resist pineapple soft serve!? Their simple menu consists of their classic Pineapple Whip soft serve $5, Pineapple Whip float (soft serve + pineapple juice) $6, and Pineapple juice. The day I went, they had a special, it was a pineapple soft serve float, (soft serve + juice) except they used a special blend of juices. I can't remember exactly what kind of juice it was, but it was something along the lines of pineapple, orange, guava???? Whatever it was, it was delicious, and I would prefer this special compared to their normal pineapple float because the different blend of juices gives the float a different mix of flavors rather than just pineapple. In comparison to the dole whip float from disneyland, I think it's up to par, so definitely worth trying! read more
