Huge fan of Gohan's lunch it is such a great deal. Sorry but I am not a person that enjoys sushi so I ca not review that portion of the lunch menu. However based on how busy the sushi bar is at lunch time, it must be very good. I have tried a few of the dishes at lunchtime and they generally run from $10 to $14. And no joke, the serving is such that there is enough for you to enjoy over two separate lunches. The Katsu Donburi with chicken katsu and with rice, egg and onion is very good. Reminds me of when I was young and I used to eat dinner over at a friends house. Her mother was a wonderful cook and made this dish often. The Bento boxes are very popular at lunchtime and has a little bit of something for every one. Again, many of them in the twelve dollar range. read more

The food tastes SUPER WEIRD and had little to no flavor. Customer service was great, though. I had ordered the Tonkatsu ramen, a dragon roll, and a salmon skin roll. The ramen wasn't ramen, it was chow mein. The broth was lacking everything. The salmon skin roll had this unappealing smell of plastic coming off of it. Ruined the experience at that point. The dragon roll was flavorless for some reason. And all for $40? Absolutely. Love. Gohan. Period. Even their miso soup is better then most! IT has so much flavor and rally delicious mushrooms in it. For lunch the bento box is really yummy and well priced. I usually get the salmon teriyaki. For dinner I pretty much always get the "Ring of Fire" roll. By far my favorite roll I have had there (they are all good don't get me wrong) If you love Tuna and Spicy you will love this roll! Their sake nigiri tasted really off. Wasn't was buttery as usual. Also it didn't fall apart in your mouth and with such long slippery pieces I was worried of chocking. Their calamari though was fantastic! I would go back for just the Calamari, would prefer other places for nigiri though. read more

I think this is amazing sushi but not the best- $60 plus change- total for 4 pieces of sushi and 3 pieces fish +cheap Sake $7 and a unfiltered box( brought wrong one - it was clear and filtered. Throughout our evening here it seemed as though everyone that walked in was a regular and was greeted by their first name with a friendly smile and a "how's your wife...do you want the usual?" It's kind of amazing... Gohan feels like an upscale sushi joint, even though it's located in a shopping center. Once you step inside, it's all sleek and subdued, classy and comfortable. You completely forget there's a Kohl's outside and a sports bar next door. The Japanese zen vibe is going strong here! My sister and I sat at the sushi bar, where we watched creative rolls being prepped, and ordered mostly by sight. They've got a large menu of traditional Japanese specialties, along with classic rolls ($6-$15) and quirky sushi rolls ($14-16). We had a spider roll, the gorgeous green Kryptonite roll, and the unique Rolling Stone roll with crunchy rice balls as a garnish. It's a small place, so the servers are very attentive. From here we came across gohans, snuggled in a little plaza, with its exterior buried in the scent of horse manure..oi vey... Obviously as you walk in, you'll know your not necessarily paying for the decor of the place, but rather a balance of quality and portion. A much larger portion than that of which you would find at sushi ran in Sausalito.(+1) Cisco Roll- Reminiscent of a dragon and California roll, really nice balance of flavors and not too much rice. And thankfully the chef did not over do it with the unagi sauce.(+2) Rib Eye with tempura addition--- Do keep in mind when you order this plate that none of the workers really ask you how you want your steak cooked. The preset is medium.(+1) The tempura addition is so small its not really worth the 5$ extra.(-1) The teriyaki sauce is a watery form of what you would find in Sausalito and in san francisco. It carries the flavor throughout the plate, but the tough medium cooked meat blocked it from infusing with the sauce like the hoover dam. (-1) When you i walk into the bathroom, i swear it was like getting blasted in the face by the Victoria secret body spray section, it was pungent to the point where you has to hold your breath as if you had an invisible hazmat mask on. Too much ...too much (-1) BY THE WAY , Refills are subject to a charge of quantity rather than complimentary refills here fellow customers be weary. A Japanese restaurant in Petaluma? Let alone a good one? Yep. Whilst travelling back down to the Bay Area, we scrounged around Yelp and found this lucky little establishment. We had a large party of 8 on a Wednesday and were seated within around 5 minutes. The ambiance of the place was stylishly modern, complete with a chrome fireplace, spherical lamps, art on the wall, and a sleek rock decorated sushi bar. It felt like a Zen garden with a modern twist. It was a refreshingly clean Japanese restaurant. I'm used to dilapidated old ones. Upon sitting down, I found our chopsticks were placed in a neatly folded piece of paper. It certainly excited me that the owners put a lot of thought into the presentation of their restaurant. But presentation aside, let's jump to the food. Our large party ordered various items but the chief players were the following: NINJA ROLL--Let's start with my favorite. The Ninja Roll was a spicy tuna roll stuffed with fried asparagus, imitation crab salad, and topped with unagi. This was by far the most interesting roll that reflected upon the whole restaurant: a Japanese Restaurant with tacit American influence and taste. The asparagus was a bold choice--usually cucumber does the job to balance the heaviness of the meat. It didn't work perfectly since asparagus is a little heavy in and of itself, but the tuna was fresh, the unagi didn't have any pesky bones, and all the bells and whistles such as the spicy mayo, tobiko, and unagi sauce complemented the roll perfectly. ALASKA ROLL--it was the standard salmon with avocado. Pretty fresh and nothing to complain about. RAINBOW ROLL--a good choice if you want to sample four different fish: shrimp, salmon, tuna and yellowtail. Each topped with tobiko of various colors, definitely quite a nice touch. They were all fresh and standard. Needless to say when I wanted to grab another piece from the Rainbow Roll plate, a friend already snatched it up. DRAGON ROLL--the Dragon Roll was by far my least favorite. The tempura shrimp, cucumber, unagi, tobiko, and sauces were each and in itself all right. However, by the time I got to the second piece, it was all together quite boring and overshadowed by the Ninja Roll. It certainly followed the Law of Diminishing Returns. Bento Box B: New York Steak Teriyaki--I'm used to super dry and too thoroughly cooked steak in the countless bento boxes that I've eaten in the past. But this one was quite a gem. The meat was still a little pink, just as I like it and IT WASN'T TOUGH AND STRINGY. Service was friendly and extremely sufficient. Bottom Line: Quality Japanese food in a stunningly American setting for a slightly premium price--definitely well worth it though. Please come here if you're looking for something to eat in Sonoma County. Their rolls and dishes were done with care. read more

I used to love this place but had an experience that will forever prohibit me from returning...The place was suspiciously empty. We sat, we ordered. I went to the bathroom, the smell in there literally made me gag, something was seeping from under the toilet, they put a rug to soak up the wetness. The stench tells me they have a sewage leak. When I returned to the table some food had been delivered, my brother was battling to eat his steak but he said the fruit flies were attacking it so quickly he could not win. I had one sushi roll on my plate, i shewed a few large black flies away as I ate but it did not taste great. The "Seabreeze Cocktail" is a bed of marinated wakame seaweed with crab salad on top (with a "C", not "K") topped off with caviar and served in a martini glass. The Calamari appetizer has perfectly cooked rings of breaded calamari, drizzled with a sweet and spicy Korean sauce that is to die for. My favorite is one of the "new style" sashimi plates. It's a long plate with slices of melt-in-your mouth albacore. The sashimi rests on a bed of paper-thin slices of cucumber, and is topped with thin slices of jalapeo pepper. It's drizzled with ponzu sauce. The hamachi carpaccio with Banyuls dressing is also a hit. On valentine's day we had a dinner that included teriyaki lamb chops, and they were exquisite. For dessert there is always green-tea cheesecake and flourless chocolate torte. The cheesecake is made with a special green tea that is not as bitter as most, and as a result the cheesecake is a wondrous blend of sweet and slightly bitter. I came here on for lunch and loved the experience. It's a little noisy for the fact that a lot of people come here on their lunch break, but it's a lower ambient noisy level. I sat at the sushi bar since I was by myself. The service was quick and prompt. I ordered a lot. I was having a bad day. And yes, I managed to eat it all. I love sushi. I love Japanese food. I started with a small house hot sake, a Sapporo, and a bento box. From the menu: Gohan Sushi Bento with Chef's choice nigiri and sashimi each 4 piece, California roll, and spicy tuna roll with a house green salad. This also included prawn and vegetable tempura, steamed rice, miso soup, and sunomono salad. I ended up with around a $40 bill. For lunch that's a little pricy, but I did go all out. And hey, it was fresh, delicious and fast. I'd love to go back here. I just wish they were open on the weekend for lunch. The only reason I docked a star was because of the price. I can get the same quality sushi for less expense at some other places. I haven't ordered a whole lot here, so I'll update my review on a revisit. read more

Gohan, to me, is the most consistent Sushi bar in the north bay. Their J-pop nachos are awesome and their selection of rolls from the ring of fire to the Ninja are well done and extremely tasty. Don't worry they have all the typical rolls you will find everywhere else as well as great sashimi, but they have a flair for the original. My wife and I had a great dinner tonight as the level of service was close to perfect and they actually,for a sushi bar, have a decent wine list. Sonoma cutrer Chardonnay by the glass was her choice and was an excellent pairing with her veggie sushi rolls and the J pop starter. But we did have exceptional service and our server hooked us up with sake and sake bombs since it was a friend's birthday.
