The Continental in Glendora is a restaurant bar that offers quite a lot to the community. Two nights out of the week they have live bands and twice a week. They have karaoke in the main bar lounge check the times on their website. The maintaining room is beautiful 60s nostalgia. The service is great the waitresses there are always pleasant and friendly. The bartenders are funny and efficient and quick. Please if you go find out when they're having the barley beef soup it's probably one of the best soups in Glendora that we've had! They have a great selection on their menu, prime, rib, fish and chips, shrimp cocktail, French onion, soup, steak, and fish of the day. They also have a daily blue plate special that you could get on a discount. The restaurant is really good great food great people a lot of locals go.. and if you want to beat the heat step over to Continental restaurant and bar in Glendora, where it's cool shady the lights are dimmed perfectly and you're gonna have a spectacular time! Food was great! Delicious, and the portions were abundant. I liked everything that I ordered. I ordered a half rack of lamb, with baked potato, and everything in it, clam chowder to begin with, and the vegetables were fresh, and the bread and butter was good. They just messed up a little bit because my lamb was actually me there, rather than medium rare. I think the price is very fair for what you get. I would love to go back to try more stuff on the menu. Great place to dine in and lister to good music. Restaurant is very informal. Lots of people coming in T-shirts and shorts. This place popped up on my phone so thought we'd give it a try. Apparently they have live music at night. My guy and I order 2 beers, nothing on draft. Looked over the menu and saw the early bird prime rib special. My guy ordered the French dip. My salad with the meal was really good. My prime rib- ordered medium came out tough.. The waitress was nice, when I mentioned it, she took it back, which I rarely send anything back, but she said thats the way medium is.. hmmm, really? Must be yesterdays.. She came back and said she and the cooks tried it, she was still chewing it, and it was tender to them. Yikes!! I reordered chicken tenders without the fries. My take is that they were frozen then cooked. Uggh! Well, the only thing i can say is that the atmosphere is good, service good. Can't rave about the food. I met some girlfriends here for lunch recently. They have a large parking lot, which was nice! When I first walked inside, it took a few minutes for my eyes to adjust as it was pretty dark. I ordered one of the lunch specials, which consisted of BBQ pork ribs, coleslaw, and French fries. I substituted onion rings for the French fries, and I'm glad I did. My meal was absolutely delicious! They have a full bar, but they don't offer any specialty cocktails. Live bands play some evenings, and this place has a great vibe! The large street signage and to some extent the Spanish inspired building with red tile roof does not even give a hint that Glendora Continental serves rustic Basque cuisine very similar to what would be called The Set Up in Bakersfield. The Basque people live in the border areas of Southwest France & Northwest Spain which they call their homeland Euskadi or Euskal Herria. They speak Euskara which is not related to any other language in the world and call themselves Euskaldunak. Originally, many Basques who came to America were sheep herders & farmers so the legacy food tends to be filling and heavy to last them through the day. Glendora Continental's Set Up is just a bit more abbreviated than what you would find in Bakersfield, one of the few centers of Basque culture besides Boise, Idaho. But you will not leave hungry and probably have enough food for lunch the next day. 1) Bread is a light sour dough French bread with tough skin & soft inside. Hard butter straight from the fridge reminds me of the 1970's and back. 2) Soup du Jour was thickened New England style Clam Chowder. Light seafood & chicken stock with good chunks of chewy clams, potatoes, milk. 3) Escabeche/Pickled Tongue is ultra thin slices, lightly grilled to give a rough texture. A light vinegar based herb dressing with viscous olive oil was the pickling agent to this enticing, gamey, beefy dish. 4) Prosciutto was definitely not from Parma nor San Daniele, Italia and neither from the famous Jamón Serrano from Spain, but good enough for a ham sandwich the next day. Balls of butter were thoughtfully included to spread onto a future sandwich. 5) Bouchée à la Reine is a Vol au Vent/flight in the wind since the light, airy, cup shaped pastry seems to be able to float in the air. It means Queen's Bite or Morsel and refers to Queen Marie Leszczynska, wife of French King Louis XV. The filling is a ragoût of aromatic button mushrooms & possibly mild, meaty, soft chicken liver in a Sauce Suprême, a Sauce Velouté with added thick cream. 6) Half Rack of Lamb is tastefully presented with the delicate ribs poking up like a crown and delectable meaty chops facing down. Ordered medium rare to keep it juicy, plush, and not hard & dried out. Really strong, toasty, garlic scent to add to the lamb meatiness. Even a small cup of neon green mint jelly which was not Basque but a concession to American sensibilities. I opted for the big Baked Potato with everything: sour cream, onions, bacon. Side of steamed and then sautéed mélange of vegetables. On another visit, the latest potato choice was Scallop Potatoes which was so over baked that the top half was hard & dry. 7) Blue Cheese pre dessert: Excellent Roquefort like blue cheese full of salty Umami and that blue mold flavour. Almost double cream rich dairy sweetness. Seasonal Fruits were aesthetically arranged and a gooey pecan caramel decorated the dish. 8) Flan is very light, moist, not funky yolky in a pleasantly bitter sweet, caramel sauce. I took the Flan home and drizzled Amaretto di Saronno for special almond aromatics. Sampled the Chocolate Mousse that reminded me of Jello chocolate pudding whipped up to add air in to lighten the texture. Emma, our waitress was friendly, affable, cheerful, who made sure our meal progressed smoothly. At $46 this multicourse, Basque feast is a deal. Go straight to this on the menu. Otherwise, the only other alternative is to drive 130 miles to Bakersfield although I hear that there is another Basque eatery in Chino. 4+ stars PS Tried to reserve on their email system on their website and also left voice messages to confirm reservation since no one answered the phone call. Walked in to the bar side of the restaurant and stood around looking for a hostess. A customer walked by and said to just walk in and sort of find a seat. Who knew there was a Basque restaurant in Glendora? Or anywhere else in Los Angeles County for that matter? Not me, until Super Elite Yelper Gary I. brought this fact to my attention. Unfortunately, this was because of an LA Times article about the restaurant being sold after decades of serving the area. Wanting to try the menu before it might disappear, we made dinner plans and enjoyed our meal a great deal. The restaurant's decor doesn't seem to have changed much since it opened; lots of Basque art, 80's decor, and family pictures on the walls give it a retro feel. It features a bar with live music and a dining room for meals. We began in the dining room, each ordering the Basque set-up which includes: soup of the day (I ordered white bean, clam chowder was also available), bouchée à la reine (puff pastry crammed full with savory mushrooms in sauce), prosciutto, pickled tongue, half-rack of lamb with vegetables and French fries, bleu cheese and baguette, as well as dessert (flan or mousse). The soup was delicious, and the appetizers were fantastic, served in truly generous portions. The rack of lamb was covered with fried garlic, and cooked perfectly to the requested medium rare. The only room for improvement was dessert; nothing to write home about. Definitely great bang for the buck, though, and a filling meal. Service was super prompt and very friendly. We then adjourned to the bar for a nightcap. Unfortunately, the bar ran out of the ingredients for the famous Basque drink of Picon punch but seems to have lots of other liquors/beers available. The band was super loud, but there's an area for dancing if you're so inclined. Lots of locals seem to enjoy the place a great deal...let's hope the new owners pay attention to that. We go because our friend is the band that plays on Fridays sometimes but just the fact that this place has live music is awesome. Everyone is so nice and comfortable. I don't usually write reviews, but tonight I felt compelled to share my experience because I left feeling upset and disrespected. This was my second time visiting, as my mom comes here often for karaoke. During my first visit, the service was great and I tipped generously -- around 40% -- especially since it's the holiday season. Unfortunately, tonight was very different. The service was poor from the start. The waitress handled my drink by placing her fingers directly on the rim of the glass, which made me uncomfortable and raised hygiene concerns. When it came time to pay, I covered the entire table's bill and, despite the service, still left a 40% tip. What truly bothered me was what happened next. After processing the payment, the waitress thanked only the white woman at our table and never acknowledged me or my mother -- despite the fact that I paid the entire bill. That moment felt dismissive and, honestly, discriminatory. It's disappointing, because everyone else seemed pleasant and the atmosphere is otherwise enjoyable. We've come here a few times now and will be putting it in our routine options, especially when we're craving a steak. I love that every time we come here it feels like it's filled with a bunch of local regulars. The waitresses know most of the people by their first name and it looks like everyone settles into their favorite booth or spot at the bar. I also love the decor and ambiance with that old steakhouse feel--dark wood, leather booths, low lighting and a bunch of TVs with different games on. You really can't beat it. If we can make it in time for the early bird specials (by 6:30pm) I always get the prime rib. It's delicious and plenty of food. Paired with a glass of wine and it's a great night. The 1-star rating is based on the establishment's condition the night we visited. I've been to the Continental several times, so I know what I'm getting. It's a dive bar and I'm fine with that. The band was good and got the crowd into it. When we pulled into the parking lot, we saw a physical altercation between a male and female by the front door. By the time we got to the front door, they were gone. We went inside, sat down and a server came up almost immediately to take our order. She was quick with our drinks and the drinks were nice and strong. The cocktail server and bartender were very good, 4-5 stars. The major issue with the Continental this evening was there was no running water in the women's bathroom sink, nor was there hand sanitizer. I had the worst experience here several weeks ago. My partner and I went in for what felt like 30 minutes. Turned into several hours of us trying to make our way to our car. Unfortunately, we feel that we were microdosed with something that night and was the scariest experience i've ever had. Both of us are unable to account for a 2-hour window of time, and thankfully ended up back in our car trying to make our way out of the bar and back home safely. We both had less than one drink. Last night was the first time I ever went to the Continental. For my husband it was a trip down memory lane, a bit of nostalgia of times he spent dining here with his grandparents -- and it was fun to share in that with him, our kids in tow. First off, it is never crowded here -- but it is clear that there are regulars. The restaurant is, essentially, two places in one. On one side you have the dining area on the other side you have the bar / karaoke and "u" shaped booths for a little bit of both: boozing and dining. Lol! The Continental is billed as a Basque restaurant -- which I am still trying to figure out what it means. So far, I understand that it means eating obscure and gamey foods such as lamb, tongue, and "stick to your ribs" potatoes and pastas -- all very tasty. We were met by a super attentive and friendly waitress who indulged my daughter's questions and requests. Our drinks were good and classic: gin and tonic and a whiskey sour -- both good and well prepared. We got the shrimp cocktail appetizer. The shrimp were fresh, clean, and meaty. The cocktail sauce (not normally a "go-to" for me) was delicious: a perfect mix of tang, heat (from the horseradish), and sweetness. I'd get this again. The ambiance was very old-school: mounted horns on the walls, red pleather covered seats (that my husband swears are the same as when he came here as a kid), dark lighting, and a small stage to feature karaoke certain nights of the week -- all mixed with some bits of kitsch and nostalgia. Knowing that this was a Basque restaurant I chose something unconventional but common on their menu: lamb shank, mashed potatoes & veggies, and to start: PICKLED TONGUE. The waitress offered salad or soup -- and didn't mention the pickled tongue, until I asked about it. She was neutral -- and dare I say, so was the flavor of the tongue. It wasn't good or bad -- I expected a bit more of a pickled / vinegar flavor and instead it tasted like bland, thinly sliced roast beef (if that). You're not missing anything for not trying it -- it was worth the try. The lamb shank was DELICIOUS! The meat was tender, you could taste (and chew through) the fatty sinews (which i love!), and the overall flavor was complimented by the red wine sauce on top. I would eat this again. Word to the wise - show up hungry! Portions are hearty and lamb is rich! Okay, they get one star for the bartenders and their pours. That's it. The food is awful. No, truly! McDonald's frozen burgers have more flavor than what I was served. What did I order? Two items. Their escargot and their sautéed mushrooms. I've enjoyed escargot since I was little and some of the best restaurants for escargot where the Golden Spur and Chasen's of Beverly Hills. The Continental's were absolutely tasteless. Truly! There wasn't even the taste of butter and garlic. So, after that miserable disappointment I was excited to eat the mushrooms, as I was really hungry. I received an order of what appeared to be tiny canned mushrooms and again, absolutely zero taste. To start off I have lived in the area for 5 years now and this was my first time coming to this place and most likely I will not go back. To start we had to ask where the host was and then we sat down and waited for about 5 minutes for the hostess to get us menu's then took another 15 minutes for the waitress to come over and ask if we were ready to order. I ordered the chicken masala which came with a baked potato and veggies ( i hate summer squash and zucchini) the chicken was ok but a little bit overcooked and the masala sauce was very little and did not taste like masala sauce ( I don't think the cook used masala wine for the sauce, the baked potato was very dry and they use unsalted butter which I hate ( I wish restaurants would use salted butter because it tastes so much better). So today's review is probably the strangest post I've ever had to do. First off, I try to give a honest and fair assessment of the establishment as possible. Having a neutral approach is the key. So here goes. I've passed by this location probably a gazillion times over the years and never stopped. Had a friend that had a luncheon and she said the food was great. A few Saturdays ago, I decided to stop and get lunch, It was 11:00am. When we pulled to The Continental in Glendora. The Continental is a much older establishment and from the street you'd never know it was still in operation. The grounds around the building are in need of a major facelift. The huge parking lot easily supports 40-50 vehicles (estimated). The handicap stall was few maybe two. Lighting at night and the sign outside are bright and clear. Only 3-4 cars in the parking lot at this time. There are three ways to enter, the front door and both side doors. As my friend tried to open the front door it was locked, leading us to believe that they were closed. She then tried the side door while I waited in my car. She went in for a second and said with a smile on her face, "O You gotta see this". As I entered I was transformed back to the 70's and 80's !!! I had never seen this kind of atmosphere at a restaurant in a long time. We stepped into the bar side of the restaurant. First thing I noticed was the bar and I would guess "The Regulars" that were lining it. NOTE: I haven't been to a bar since my college years and I was taken back to see so many at the bar drinking at 11:00am. Please note, I'm not judging anyone. The bar had seats for about 15 and 13 or so we're taking. As we made our was to the area in the middle they had smaller tables all in a row probably 10-13 tables with chairs. To the left were booths about 8 or so and what got me looking was the lite brown color with old school tuck n rolled upholstery !!! Haven't seen that in years. As we headed to one of the tables I tripped on the carpet and noticed that the carpet haven't been cleaned in decades because it was black with small color highlights, but the reason I tripped was because the carpet was ripped and they tried to fix the rip with ducted tape that has now disintegrated over the years. I was feeling on edge. As we sat at the small table the server came over and said if we would like to sit at the booths and I said no it's hard for me to get in n out of them. So with a great smile she gave us some menus. There was another lady with a clip board that came out and was counting the tables, at least 3 or 4 times. I figured it was for a party soon, then she locked her eyes on us,, not just once but several times. Feeling uncomfortable as it was, I asked if there was a problem and she said that she needed our table for a party and she wanted to move it into place. I then asked, what time was the party ? she said not until 7:00pm. with an attitude. I kindly answered we'll be long gone before then... In looking at the menu I noticed that the prices were good and a selection that was good for lunch. Not sure if they had another menu for dinner service. We made our choices I had a patty melt and my friend had the Continental (I think) with onion rings and mine was fries with no salt. Our server smiled and said I'll put that right in for you and put our drinks on the table. I noticed on the sign outside that they had karaoke on certain nights, then I saw a small dance floor and the stage. I immediately noticed that the stage had several large black stains on what I think used to be carpet and the drapes by the stage were in really bad shape. Three TV were on and they were in three locations. Also a kino tv. As our server came back to tell me that the fries has salt on them already. Ok so can I have a small salad then, in which she said with a the greatest smile. Our food came next and the plates were REALLY HOT !! Not sure if it was microwaved or food heating lamps.. I have to say that the food lived up to great food standards. I had a great patty melt and my friend was pleasantly impressed with the food as well. I have to say, if it wasn't for the kindness of our server I would have walked (Ran) out of that place. Here are the number, in my humble opinion, on The Continental in Glendora. Appearance: Negative 12 out of 10. Food: OUTSTANDING 10 out of 10. Cost: 8 out of 10. Staff: Our server only 12+ out of 10. Return: I think you already know but it's a negative. We came to have lunch at the Continental and we ordered the prime rib and the tri tip. I did not wish to be impolite but I wanted to ask when did they shoot the horse. No disrespect to horses. The waiters was very nice. read more
