I LOVE this place!! The food is ALWAYS great and the menu is ALWAYS changing (corn week is a personal favorite) , the staff is friendly and attentive. My (non cooking) brother-in-law lives by the GT, so for many-many years, this has been our go to place to meet up for lunch, dinner or to celebrate a birthday. The price is on par for other comparable places. They have a bar menu that has a great pizza and home made buffalo chicken bites as well. Like most restaurants, dinner at the Gladstone Tavern on a Saturday night is going to be crowded, but the food and service didn't diminish at all. Everything was very good. The guacamole was tasty, although a little bit of chopped tomato and spritz of lime juice would have made it even better. My husband had the lamb loin and I enjoyed the Lobster Pappardelle with a lovely blend of sauteed fennel, tomatoes, and onion in a light Chardonnay sauce. We were thrilled to see rhubarb on the dessert menu so we ordered the rhubarb-strawberry pie with basil ice cream. It was delicious. My only negative thought about the experience was the generally bad choice of music that could be heard above the noisy crowd. It is possible that this music was supposed to hurry up the patrons and turn over the tables more quickly. In spite of the wild music, it was still a nice dinner. read more

Frustrating experience. Place is lovely and food was excellent. But service was terrible, We were seated in the back terrace for Sunday lunch. Maybe that was the problem. An unfriendly waitress took our order. Two of us got our non alcoholic drinks but we waited and waited for a beer. After 10 minutes the waitress returned and said "the beer will be right up." Ten more minutes later she and the beer showed up. One more thing. Please bus and clear tables when diners leave. This is a pet peeve of mine, It makes you feel like you're an afterthought and that you've come late to the party. Great food and ambiance isn't enough -- bad service ruins the experience. read more

My family and I came here to celebrate my aunt & uncle's 50th Wedding Anniversary, and it was a truly memorable affair. First, the entire staff was more than accommodating as well as being extremely friendly. Serving a party of 11 at a somewhat upscale restaurant can tend to be a challenge at times, but the staff really stepped up to the plate. All of the orders came out timely, were correct and cooked to perfection. I enjoyed the Atlantic Salmon with garlic spinach and grit cakes, and started off with a dozen oysters on the half shell. The food was fresh and flavorful. Though it's a bit of a hike from my apartment in Manhattan, hopefully I'll find another opportunity to bring myself back to the Gladstone Tavern. read more

Let me make it clear this place is only getting two stars based on the decor and atmosphere. If I could give the service -1 I would... The service is beyond slow and inattentive !!! We sat down at the bar on a Sunday afternoon and no exaggeration - waited for 20 minutes until the bartender finally acknowledged us... It seemed like they had a pretty busy morning, because all the tables around were dirty. However nobody was in a rush to clean those tables...the scene remain the same as the new customers have arrived. When we pointed this fact out to a bartender as two couples were trying to sit down at a bar tables - she only said : well, I know it. By the way, those customers cleaned up their own tables to sit down at. Servers and a bartender do not seem to know what they do, very unorganized and inefficient. Their general manager is exactly the same- all over the place and doing nothing. They need more people on the floor including a busser and additional bartender, because clearly they cannot handle it the way it is. I do speak from experience, having spent the last 15 years in the restaurant business and doing some restaurant consulting. This place has the potential of doing so much better if they at least tried... Food is decent, however this place would never survive if it wasn't for high prices and lack of options in this affluent community. Owners should be ashamed... read more

Probably when of the best restaurants I ever been to. I have been coming here sense I was in a stroller my parents spend a crap tone of money at this place! I know all the staff/waitress/waiters and the owner is extremely nice I am currently 15 years old now. The food is splendid the yard is gorges and the bathrooms are very reliable and clean. SO IS EVERYONE THERE! I recommend the fai gra but its only in the springtime. read more

Have wanted to go here for a while-Finally had the chance for lunch. Started with the crab tots- very meaty, deep fried crab meat-Crispy, three sauces to choose from. Delish. Had serrano ham salad with arugula, manchego, pear and pistachio with a white balsamic. Only problem is I wished the salad could have been a tad larger, as it is listed on the menu under the category Large Salad. I did suspect by the relative price, however, that it was not going to be all that large. No problem-That gave me the green light for one of the best desserts I have ever had-Butterscotch Mousse with Chocolate Ganache, Whipped Cream and a homemade pretzel stick. The taste and texture of the mousse was sheer perfection, and the taste of the mousse, the ganache, and a bite of homemade pretzel stick was truly inspired and a revelation! In an area not exactly rife with excellent dining, Gladstone Taven is a very solid option. The service is consistently friendly and efficient, and the food is moderately inventive and very tasty. My most recent meal there was on Easter, and I was very excited that they had the full menu plus specials rather than a truncated holiday version. The lamb entree was juicy and flavorful, as was the carrot-based cocktail. The crab tots are forgettable, though they carry the "signature" moniker...opt for a different appetizer. read more

My wife and I love this place, we use it as a barometer as we try other restaurants in the area. The food is great, the bar is great, the staff is great. Parking is always perfect, and there is fun outdoor seating as well. We find it to be kid-friendly when we bring our small children for lunch or an early dinner, as well as a perfect spot for when it's just us. The decor is my favorite, and they actually play good music. If I can offer one sliver of constructive criticism...pull up the carpet in the dining room and install a hard wood floor. I heard about the rave reviews. That prompted me to visit this place. Service would have been acceptable if the guys understood the language, which i guess was severely lacking. An avid meat enthusiast I ordered steak. Medium rare. It was done close to charcoal. Apparently a language distortion. Most importantly the meat was certainly not beef. I guess what did it for me is seeing the male manager slap one of the female waitresses on the backside with a checkfold. He thought he was pretty cool as I watched his demeanor during my extra long poorly staffed lunch. My boyfriend and I work in the industry, so we are very understanding of a busy night. However, on a Monday night with only a few other tables seated, a 45 minute wait between apps and entrees is unforgivable. We can start with the 10 minute wait for water...We ordered a couple cocktails and those were fine...The apps were okay, but then our server was shocked that we asked her to check on our entrees at the 35 minute mark, as if she had forgotten to send for them. When they finally came out, we ended up taking our entrees to go as we were on a time crunch. They comp'd the corkage fee on the wine that we brought, but honestly, we expected more. Upon eating the entrees at home, my lobster roll was less than satisfactory and my boyfriends chicken schnitzel was not enjoyable. Been coming here for years and have always liked their menu. We still think the food is pretty good, but the service has dropped off markedly in the recent past. It's actually been spotty for a year and you're almost rolling the server dice when you walk in the place. We were the first people in the door this past Sunday (4 kids, 4 adults) and had some of the worst service we've ever experienced within 10 miles of the place. Kid was late with everything, had to chase him down for things, almost got our plates spilled all over us. Got hit with a 20% mandatory gratuity to top it all off, which we paid, because Karma. But when we mentioned to the manager that the service was just terrible he seemed incredibly disinterested. We'll choose to spend our money elsewhere in the future. read more

Our waitress Gigi was very helpful in recommending entrees, was very friendly and we never once waited for anything especially since the restaurant was very crowded. The bartenders were also great! My wife and I visited for dinner. The food was trash and the service was below average. Fingers all over our straws, 2 ravioli for $12, "Truffled" mash potatoes were just mashed, "Whipped" cauliflower was actually pureed thin as heck like food for a nursing home resident (mind you, sides were not included with the already over-priced entree). My so called iron skillet chicken was raw on the inside. Then to top it off, the uncouthed waitress asked me if I wanted to like the bowl before she takes it... ???? Deep Breath. Mixed bag. We just moved around the corner from this place, so it is in the 'hood and walkable. Service spotty. Overworked waitstaff led to inconsistent timing, etc. Had to ask for knife to cut tough what-was-sold-as-home smoked pastrami but, tasted like dried-out, overcooked supermarket boil-your-own corned beef. Overpriced, dry, small portion (thankfully?). Wife and kid had pasta w/ short ribs. It WAS better than the "pastrami" (wink, wink). Had the cheeseboard to start (vastly overpriced) and what was billed as a pumpkin cheesecake which was actually a lot of dry, overbaked pastry dough and no discernible pumpkin or cheesecake. Major fail. Took forever to receive the crappy dessert and when I went to cancel it, they finally located it. All food is overpriced which is not unexpected given the location. Zero value for the money. Big bar scene. Expensive beer ($7 up) and really not worth the cost. We may return but, only because it IS in the 'hood. Cesar's Deli and Gladstone Market are on either side of this place and both are much more reasonably priced and much better across the board. read more

Hit or Miss. I think if you stick with going there for lunch you would be happier. The dinners are expensive for what you are getting. The bar area is very nice, the music they play is usually pretty good, drinks are good, they have a drink of the day and it's usually decent, which must be difficult. Again, they don't give their bar away either. The kids menu looks pretty reasonable and the kids seem to enjoy it. I think part of the problem with the Gladstone Tavern is not their fault at all. If there were something between the Tavern and Dominick's price-wise in town, it would be ideal. When you come home from work and don't feel like cooking or cleaning up and you just want to grab a decent bite that won't sting the wallet, this is not the place. I figure two adult entrees, a pre-dinner drink and a couple of glasses of wine...you are pushing around $100+ bucks after tip. That's not super expensive but it's also not something you want to do every week. And in the summer, a couple times a week and then role in to the weekends with real dinner plans. There's got to be a happy medium somewhere around here. Overall...I have had very good meals and very average meals here. I don't mind spending money on value but there is no guarantee you will find that here. I would say, give it a try, you may hit instead of miss. Also, some of the people who work there are very nice, including the owner, which definitely brings me back to try again. read more

Another place I went to with the finance department for dinner. There was about 20 of us. When we arrived we received homemade guacamole in an avocado shell with warm tortillas. We had a set menu to choose from. The restaurant was very accommodating for those of us that needed Lenten type dinners. For an appetizer I had the thai chili calamari. It was prepared perfectly. It had a nice crisp and wasn't soggy. The thai chili sauce was delicious and the chopped mango was a nice bonus for extra flavor. For my dinner out of the selections, I had the wild mushroom parpadelle in roasted garlic broth. I LOVE parpadelle. It was good. There really wasn't a wow factor and I wasn't blown away but I enjoyed it. I felt like the wild mushrooms overpowered everything in the plate. I wasn't offered parmesan cheese which I would have liked. I chose the toasted coconut ice cream for dessert. That was AMAZING! I'd be willing to eat there again maybe in the summer. It depends on if I want to take the drive down. I'm 45 minutes north of there. It would be cute to try if they have an outside set up. We have been several times. The food is consistently good. The eggplant appetizer and beet tartare are exceptional. The best entree is the cod/chorizo/clams. The coq au vin was excellent as well. Fairly priced. The waiters are nice but we have always felt unwelcomed by the reception area and the people who seat us. They need coaching by management. read more

I was lucky enough toget a table for lunch yesterday, during this holiday season. Glad I did. The menu, while not huge had so many interesting dishes that it was hard to choose. Everyone enjoyed their selections. Don't pass up dessert! I was trying to be good, ordering a kale and duck salad for my meal, but then I Had to have the figgy pudding with pecan crumble and clove ice cream. When i go to a restaurant is because i'm hungry and i have the money to pay for the food and the service. I know that to many people like free food, so they pay with coupons or they complain for any thing in order to get something free, they never tip and always write poor reviews The server people know those freeloader and they give them poor service. Came in for late lunch and REALLY had to get a train back to Hoboken soon, but I am forgiving and won't take off a star for them taking SO long with a simple hamburger (which was all I really wanted since they were not serving their dinner menu yet. I had a full twelve minutes to eat the burger and get the train, but I give four stars because even in that short amount of time, I was privy to friendly and courteous service and a warm and elegant ambiance. It was pretty pricey for a hamburger and fries (which were actually very finely and thinly peeled/stripped potatoes rather than fries as we know them to look), but this is generally an expensive and somewhat WASP-y area from what I gathered, and this is literally all that is around the Gladstone train station, except a deli and a few other things. read more

Went here for dinner on saturday - there were 6 of us and we ordered the crab tots (like mini crab cakes, come in a martini glass), and the fried calamari to start. Neither were that impressive. The best was the garlic bread they brought out because they were debuting the san gennaro festival menu. Anyway, so far, we're at 3 stars...the drinks were good - the blueberry spiked lemonade was really tasty and they had dogfish on draft so that was good. for the mains, I got the NY strip cooked medium rare, which i must say was absolutely cooked perfect. Often times you go to even the best steak houses and the cooking is inconsistent. this steak had a perfect pink center all throughout and was really tasty. There was a bit of gristle but what can you do. steak came with potato wedges and string beans - netiher of them impressive. Jen's salmon was just ok, and i could tell she was not impressed. The filet looked good, but filets usually are. The dark chocolate ice cream was also good. The decor is very nice. read more

First time at the Gladstone Tavern. Our family went with another family, for a total of four adults, one teenager (with a sophisticated palate) and three eight year olds. We were seated upstairs, in a room that had (mostly) large tables. Service was prompt and efficient despite our being in Siberia. The server's suggestions were helpful and her descriptions were accurate. She seemed to know the menu, including the cocktail menu, well. The food was uniformly good. It didn't rival the Bernards Inn, but the prices didn't, either. My skillet chicken was moist and flavorful. My wife's rack of lamb was good; she and one of our other companions thought it was too sweet, the rest of us thought it was fine. My son's duck was on the sweet side, although it was perfectly cooked. Everyone else was very happy with their main courses. We only had a couple of desserts. I had a ridiculous chocolate confection with peanut butter cream and marshmallow fluff that made me wish I could bake. Basically, I ate it with my spoon and defended it with my fork. Good booze, good food, good desserts, good service at a good price point. I guess it's a good restaurant! read more

We went here for the first time on Friday night. Firstly, when we drove up the christmas lights had made it magical. From the outside it was transformed into an enchanted victorian mansion. The wait staff were efficient and attentive, the drinks came quickly as did the food orders (and we were a table of 16). I always rate a restaurant highly when the water glasses are filled up throughout the night and here barely a sip was taken before the glass was refilled (always good when alcohol and driving are involved). Lastly, but most importantly, the food was exquisite. My salmon was amazing and my ceaser salad - my benchmark - one of the best I've tasted. I will be back - many times! read more
