I have never felt more attacked and uncomfortable by a grown man. I am a younger women and was respectfully letting Dr. Swain know that I did not have extra money for anything other than what my appointment was for. He was not happy that I did not want any other work done. Dr. Swain raised his voice and told me to get the f out. As a women, I was distraught, as a human being, let's do better. Dr. Swain did a deep filling for me couple months ago. That teeth has been hurting since then. I went to see him 2 times to check what's going on. He told me that the only thing I could do is to wait for my teeth to settle after he did exams to make sure the teeth is not dying. I finally checked with another dentist and did X-ray on that teeth. What we found was that the filling did not completely cover my teeth and some of my nerves are exposed! If I leave that teeth alone, cavity will eventually develop due to the empty pocket on that teeth. After I get the new filling done, all the pain I complained about is gone. Note: I may have to do a root canal on that teeth if the teeth does not heal well. The filling is very close to my nerve and my teeth is quite traumatized cuz of the fillings. I understand that the filling for that teeth is hard to do. What I am mad about is that after I complain about my pain, Dr. Swain did not try to investigate further but only to tell me to wait for my teeth to settle. He could easily figure out the why by doing a simple X-ray. And he may be able to fix the problem. I thought a lot if I should leave this review. Dr. Swain is generally patient and is always willing to explain things to me. He is honest in what needs to be done with the teeth. I think he treats his patients well and is quite diligent. I like his staff and his office. Though, I want to share my experience with you all. If your gut feeling tells you something is wrong, please investigate further. It is our own teeth that's hurting! Always get a second opinion if you felt that something is definitely wrong. read more

My wife and I scheduled and got options for plans. Her teeth were far better than mine. But Dr. McDougal was very knowledgeable and gave me the best information and plan to get my teeth back to what they are supposed to do. Again Dr Swain making excuses. His office has given me estimates that are almost always low...and if there is a change...they tell you after the work is done so your screwed. Not ethical in my book...but Dr. Swain office staff is very unknowledgable about insurance and guess who pay's the balance if they are wrong...You do! Just say No! And find an ethical provider...just my opinion...for what it's worth. read more

This is the worst dentist office I have ever been to. The staff is so unknowldegeable. I have dental insurance and before they complete any service they give you a price statement so you know what will be out of pocket and what is covered. I was taken back for a routine cleaning and afterwards they claimed they had to do extra cleaning and I had to pay almost $80 out of pocket for no reason that I never consented to. My husband also ended up with the same problem except he cost $80 per side for what should be no cost to us twice a year with our coverage. Then we were given quotes for the three cavities I had, ended up $375 out of pocket to start and was told that would be all. Then I get a collection letter from them saying I owed $695 more because it turns out my insurance doesn't cover the materials he uses! I never got a choice! Save your money, find a different dentist. read more

I was able to get in right away for a broken tooth and the staff and Dr. Swain were all so friendly and kind. Dr John Swain is the best dentist in at least the East Valley. I have had a few Crowns and his are the only ones I am happy with. He is caring and considered in his opinions on treatment options and has been extraordinary in managing long term care while being flexible enough to be able to deal with emergencies or concerns. I have nothing negative to say about this dentist office. I scheduled for a cleaning they were polite and attentive. They offered me to get all my new patient paperwork filled out before my my actual appointment. I just printed it off their website and completed it so I didn't have to sit and wait long to be brought back. The wait wasn't long at all and complimentary water is always nice to have. My hygienist Stacy was really sweet she and I had nice conversation and she gave me the remote to choose what channel I wanted to watch or listen to while she went to work. My favorite part was getting to choose the flavor of my polish. The Cinnamon flavor was really tasty and I don't regret getting it. Overall a very easy going first visit. The first of many visits I will be back.. looks like I need my wisdom teeth removed. I've been trying to avoid it for awhile, but if im going to want that Invisaline then I need more room in my tiny mouth read more

Hands down best dentist ever! Dr. Swain and his employees are truly a breath of fresh air. I have been to several different dentists that had left me with dread for dental visits. This is a follow up to my original review of Gilbert Smiles. Dr. Swain personally called me to discuss the situation with billing. I appreciated him reaching out to listen and take care of the issues. Dr Swain is a fantastic dentist, and I always felt comfortable with his diagnosis and treatment. I've been treated by Dr. Swain since 2008. I was referred to him because my dental issues required the very best in his profession. I cannot praise him and his staff enough. As a senior citizen, I've been to over a dozen, supposedly highly qualified dental experts, and found that their dental treatment was inadequate or poor quality. Dr. Swain is unbelievably honest, open, caring, and a perfectionist. Upon my first visit he took lots of time to examine my dental issues and then explained in detail what he recommended and what my options would be. He tells it like it is. He said my treatment will take some time and will be one of the most challenging he has tackled. He was very confident I would be very pleased with the outcome. Once we decided on the treatment plan that would save me from having dentures, he went to work diligently collaborating with Dr. Brinks Austin for my 5 dental implants, and Dr. Swain's dental lab for the careful design and construction of my two bridges. Dr. Austin and staff were as professional and caring as Dr. Swain's. Dr. Austin completed my dental implants absolutely painlessly! During the time my implants were healing, Dr. Swain frequently monitored my progress and kept me smiling and as comfortable as possible with a temporary partial. After about 12 months, Dr. Austin said my implants were ready for Dr. Swain to attach my two permanent bridges. I was so surprised at how well the entire restoration turned out and how incredibly wonderful it felt to be able to chew prime rib and bite into an apple. I felt so good about smiling big again. Dr. Swain, Mary, and the staff are by far the most friendly, professional and knowledge dental office I have ever experienced. Sarah, my dental hygienist, who has been cleaning my teeth 2 or 3 times a year for the past 5 years, is absolutely wonderful. Not only is she a real sweetheart, she is thorough, knowledgeable and warm. Sarah is the most gentle hygienist I have ever experienced. If you want honest, high quality, and professional dental care, I highly recommend you visit Gilbert Smiles, and let Dr. John Swain's incredible expertise and caring staff make you smile. Office staff is incompetent. They moved my 9am appointment to 2pm without notifying me. I canceled my appointment and did not reschedule.

Pros: Dr. Swain is an honest dentist. No hidden costs and in most cases he'll be able to save you money. Cons: Dr. Swain allows his assistants to do majority of the work. In between my husband and me, he did 3 crowns. 2 of them had to be replaced as his assistants messed it up. One he personally did from beginning to end (had to actually tell him that upfront and he made AN EXCEPTION) and that one turned out great. That being said, Dr. Swain is indeed a good dentist, however he's not the one working on you most of the times. And even when he comes to check and finish in the end, the damage has already been done. read more

Dr. Swain and his staff are fantastic. They do work when it needs to be done, not because they can make a buck. Dr. Swain is meticulous in the work he does, like the crown I had done a few months back. I also appreciated how the staff went out of their way to expedite the process. I was told my permanent crown would be done in 10 days, but was delighted to get a call after less than a week telling me it was ready and they had time that day to get the thing in.
