Cute trendy coffee shop. Here on a Sunday it's slow, depending on how busy they get it looks like a great space to study, read, or get some work done. Would totally meet up with friends here. Coffee has good flavor but I ordered a cappuccino and really got a latte with barely enough foam for some latte art, not a proper cappuccino. It definitely has the look and feel of a pretentious coffee shop that would be very up top of proper drink making so I felt a bit disappointed. Will probably stick with a drip if I come back, but they just didn't cut it for my cappuccino needs. read more

This place was mentioned in several sites as "customer friendly" and "great coffee". Our experience was ANYTHING but that! The girl who took our order couldn't hear us above the blaring music at 8am on Sunday, but instead of apologizing or lowering the volume she just scowled at us and asked us to repeat everything. 2 lattes were at BEST mediocre and were not allowed to completely heat. We ordered and paid for 2 breakfast burritos, but after a ridiculous wait, we asked and were told (curtly) that "burritos take at least 15 minutes" Note: it had already been longer than that. We left without the burritos we paid for because if she was that unpleasant and the coffee was lousy, we figured the burritos would be the same. We would never go back! read more

Despite the long, communal bench appearing to have room for plenty, you can expect a good half of it to be taken up by laptop-wielding Gen X-ers with furrowed brows click-clacking away. I wanted to tell like 3 people to realize they don't own the place. :-( When not in the mood for some black coffee, really the only thing that appeals to me is the honey vanilla latte. There's nothing exceptional about the roast, but the way the flavors are balanced here really is refreshing. This is a better warm, flavored beverage than most places will serve! The menu is small...I'd like to say that lends itself to efficiency, but the workers seemed to scramble to keep up. I will account for being spoiled and say it still took a suspiciously long time to get a latte. All in all, the product is just fine. How can you not come to a place called Giant Coffee? Especially when there's awesome street art on the entire back side of the building literally screaming my name from the street....ok ok not literally, but if you've seen this mural you'd understand. Right away you walk into a bright open space. Cool high top tables as well as a few chairs facing a very huge wall of windows, and it's beautiful! There's even a cute boutique you can shop in while you're waiting for your coffee. I usually stick to a caramel latte or ice coffee at other coffee shops, but tried their honey vanilla latte. Last Saturday I stopped here with some friends, we were on our way somewhere so it was a quick stop. I wish I could have stayed longer. I was so impressed with this place, I loved the fact that there were several vegan options and they had Oat Milk. I had never heard of oat milk before it's like regular milk. I couldn't believe it! Giant Coffee is amazing, and I say this as a person who lived in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest for 20 years, even working as a barista. First, their beans are so well roasted I bought bags as Christmas gifts. That should say something. Second, their staff. One day they were slammed and Daniel was working his tail off but couldn't keep up. I ended up leaving because I was late for work, I could feel my boss getting angry, but there were still five orders ahead of mine. Daniel looked worried but I figured he'd never remember. HE DID. The girl taking the orders was very dismissive and rude. She had the attitude as if she had somewhere else to be and asked me three times what I ordered. No one else was in there. my husband got an iced latte and I got an iced americano. I did not drink mine as it tasted like dirty water and no coffee. My husbands was very sweet for an iced vanilla latte but he explained it as 'different'. Great ambiance, the pastries looked wonderful and the location is easy to get to. Not sure what the hype is all about. Coffee and tea are mediocre at best. I ordered a large iced honey vanilla latte with an extra shot. They gave me a small instead of large cup. It didn't matter much once I took the first sip since the coffee tasted like watered down coffee anyway. I'm not even sure if they added the shot since they seemed not capable of taking order correctly. My husband got an iced tea and it tasted like fast food chain iced tea. I have to admit, I've been out of the loop lately. I start traveling and I lose track of new businesses popping up in the Valley... so when I was asked if Giant Coffee worked for a morning meeting today, I said yes even though I'd never even heard of it before! I was pleasantly surprised to see the positive reviews when I looked it up. And I was even more pleasantly surprised when I found this gem of a new coffee spot hiding just east of the CVS on Central and McDowell. One sip of my Iced Tottie and I was hooked. Top that with the fabulous friendly service I received from Hayfa at the counter, and I'm sold. An additional bonus is the large spacious restroom - three stalls! How awesome is that?! Giant Coffee is going to be my new fave coffee shop downtown *when I have cash, and when I just want a beverage. That's the reason for four stars instead of five... I highly suggest that Giant Coffee add some more food options to their menu, and perhaps start taking credit cards too. But even if they do neither, I'll be back for my Iced Tottie fix. read more

Wooooohoooo!!! I have found a new coffee house!! This place is awesome!! First the only bad is the parking is super limited. You can park across the small street in front. It's a short walk away. Inside is great. The setup is nice with open tables. There is even a cool elevated seating area against the far wall. I especially like the seating area near the front window. The selection of coffee is on point! The honey vanilla latte and the pour over coffee is real good. Also I tried the first breakfast item on the chewed menu which was awesome!! Oven backed eggs with prosciutto and leaving toast. Great way to start the day. The service was great as well. Very polite and cool to converse with!! Also the have square system that's very convent. Giant Coffee does not have the vibrant name expected of a premiere coffee shop like Lux or Cartel Coffee Lab. But don't let that deter you from going. I came to Phoenix for a one-week business trip and had the opportunity to sample coffee in the downtown Phoenix area. Most of the coffee shops were somewhat homogeneous, but Giant stood out as my favorite. Out of all the coffee shops I tried, Giant was the only one that served both espresso beverages and pourover coffee. Pourovers are extremely popular in LA but not so much in Phoenix. In Phoenix, the menus are typically limited to espresso variations (macchiato, cappucchino, mocha) prepared on a La Marzocco machine. Unlike what its name suggests, the coffee at Giant are not enormous like the counterparts found at Starbucks. The largest size served at Giant is 12oz. Giant sources its beans from Four Barrel and offers organic Straus milk, products which are from the Bay Area in California. I appreciate Giant's attention to detail. Straus barista milk specifically compatible for coffee is used. This milk is richer, sweeter, and creamier than the ordinary milk available at chain shops. Breakfast is one aspect that Giant Coffee fares better than LA coffee shops. Breakfast in LA is usually limited to simple pastries. However at Giant, oven baked eggs, proscuitto, and levian toast are available for $8. In LA, this type of food can be found at diners but not at boutique coffee shops. The difference is that at Giant, I could eat a delicious full breakfast AND sip on a cup of crafted coffee before work. At LA, I would have to choose one or the other. During my next visit to Phoenix, I will be sure to stop by at Giant. The environment was comfortable, the beverages were carefully-crafted with premium beans and milk, and prices were slightly lower than those at local coffee shops. read more

I walked into Giant for the first time and the atmosphere was great. They have these window doors that slide open and expose you to the outside, which is very awesome because it was nice out. I noticed that they have an awesome layout and concrete floors. The ambiance is fantastic. The music was basically whatever I hear in all the cafes now and it wasn't too loud. They have parking around the back, self serve water and restrooms for customers too. Which is all great in Central Phoenix area. I like how simple the menu is on drinks. They don't dress it up, because lets face it, if the espresso isn't good then they would cover it up with lots of syrups and sauces for you and they'd offer them. You can tell this place WANTS you to taste the coffee. I appreciate that as I am all about that. The two people behind the counter greeted me with smiles before I even got to the front and one was displaying the food (I'm assuming she was the baker as it was a fresh quiche she brought out). The food looked very delicious. I ordered a slice and asked for water (where I found out that it was self serve) and asked for an espresso shot (one pull). It came with a soda water to cleanse my pallet and the girl who made it definitely weighed my shots and made sure that my espresso was perfect. She took her time to make sure it was up to her standards (I'd wait as long as it takes for a delicious cup of coffee over a high produced fast paced one). In about two minutes my drink was ready and I was able to enjoy it with my quiche (which she hand delivered both to me). The shots themselves had a great crema coloring and the viscosity was very nice. It was definitely a bit more citrusy than I was expecting, but all in all, it was great coffee. It wasn't sour, or bitter, or whatever have you and the service was fantastic. As I was sitting there I noticed that they knew lots of people's drinks, they joked around with the customers, and they have high standards for the espresso and food items they serve. I was blown away with the greatness of this place. I heard some stories that they were pretentious, but they weren't even close to that. I've been to several cafes just down the street that I'd say were flat out rude compared to these two young ladies that helped me today. If you gave it a shot a year ago and didn't like it, try it again. It's worth it, trust me. read more

Giant Coffee is located across the street from the Phoenix Theatre and is a mere block away from the Burton Barr Library. The big window in the front was not open when I was there, but there were still people sitting facing the window. I found that a little odd, but then... so am I. I ordered a large mexican style hot cocoa made with soy milk and it ran me about $5. The cocoa was good, but not great. $5 for hot cocoa is a little steep for me. I like places that don't charge extra for soy milk (ahem Fair Trade Cafe). About the staff, the guy who took my order (who was referred to as Luke Perry by a previous reviewer) was very friendly and helpful. I didn't have any issues with him at all. Maybe his behavior was corrected by a manager? I thought he was nice... and nice and cute is never bad in my book. There WAS another guy making the drinks who was chatting with a girl the entire time I was there. I literally left and went to the bathroom and came back and he was still chatting with her. I didn't mind at all because my drink was ready when I got out. Maybe Giant Coffee employees are just uber friendly. The reason I am giving Giant Coffee 3 stars is the following: 1.) The bathroom was filthy at 9 a.m. I can't imagine why a women's bathroom would have an overflowing trash can and be so dirty at just 9 in the morning. I know there were only two employees working there at the time and they were both male, but I cannot imagine the number of women who would have visited the bathroom in the morning would have created that much trash. It was gross. 2.) The price of the drinks was just a little steep for what you get. 3.) The ambience, crowd = not for me. I felt the setup of the shop put me on display. I did not like it. I felt like this was a place I would just order something from and leave, whereas I was looking for a Sit and Stay kind of place. I just felt like I did not belong here. ESPRESSO I'm a macchiato man, stained through and through, and Matt Poole marks his Four Barrel espresso with Strauss organic milk, so I am a happy man at Giant. The sparkling water sidecar they serve with espressos and macchiatos is an expert touch. The espresso is smoother, say, than the coppery undertones of Lux, and Giant serves it in handle-less demitasse ceramics that are hot (not too hot) to the touch. PASTRY and FOOD The daily breakfast burrito (wrapped for takeaway or reheated and served on a plate in 12-15 minutes) is rarely vegetarian, but when it is, the tortilla is flaky, the eggs fluffy, and the peppers and potatoes local. The bread pudding is chewy delicious. I usually opt for the toasted bagel because the fresh-daily cream cheese is varied and fresh (dill or bell paper or carrot). AMBIENCE On weekends and afternoons, it's less swarmed than Lux or Lola, and feels open and clean with concrete floors, high ceilings, clean lines, and bold materials (steel, wood, glass). The floor-to-ceiling glass panels accordion fold back to reveal a totally open front, great for gazing at Cancer Survivor's Park, Phoenix Art Museum, and McDowell & Central Ave. Bunky next door is sleepy, but every item is artfully placed. Occasional succulents dot the interior and exterior. EXTRAS Giant now accepts credit/debit via the nifty Square app on the house iPad. The music rarely changes, and I have been hearing the same playlist for about a year (Spoon, Heartless Bastards, etc.). Giant has dog treats, but I believe they prefer pups to be on the stoop out front. No bike rack currently but a convenient railing serves just fine. read more

This is my favorite local coffee joint so far. It's trendy and hipster without the smugness and elitism that the word "hipster" often connotates. The atmosphere is comfortable and laid-back, and the stools around the room have handy outlets under them as well as footrests so you don't get uncomfortable dangling your feet while you work. There's an afternoon happy hour where the pastries are half off, making them actually reasonable. We tried a Blackberry Somethingorother and a Lemony Cakething. Pretty sure that's not what they were called, but if the rest of the pastries are as delicious as the ones we sampled, it won't matter which ones you order. And yes, the Honey Vanilla Latte is the bomb. Try it iced because it's way to hot to drink anything warm right now, you crazy native Phoenicians. read more

I came here with Joellen on Sunday, and WOW!! Place is awesome! I really really liked it here. Staff was friendly, helpful, welcoming, coffee was tasty as well! They had the creme in these really cool "old school" containers, and place was well decorated. I will say, they had a TON of seating!! The only thing was, that after a while it wasn't all that comfortable, and I had to get up and walk around....bench seats were kind of hard on the rear end...but worth every minute we spend there. I've been wanting to visit in a long time so I am happy I finally got to. Randomly, my partner and I decided to visit this one morning. It was a little hard to find and I had no idea where to park so we parked at CVS. When we got to the coffee shop, I was told we can park at the street in the front or there is additional parking in the back. The shop was beautiful - very urban, city like, open and trendy. It would be a cool place to hang out if you have tons of work, studying, or catching up to do. Future hubby ordered the vanilla latte and I ordered the honey vanilla latte with almond milk. There are two sizes only - the small and the a little bigger than small. haha. I had the small and he ordered the bigger one. We paid and it was kind of pricey - close to $10 for how little coffee you get so he wasn't too happy for that. We can order a venti and tall at SB and pay that price. Anyway, let's talk about the flavor. My beau's regular vanilla latte was not good. It tasted flavorless, but my honey vanilla latte was good. Maybe it was the honey that made it better than his. Who doesn't love a cute and vintage feel coffee shop in Downtown Phoenix? I know I do! Coffee is my thing, I can drink 4 to 5 cups of coffee per day. So I am always on the lookout for coffee shops like Giant Coffee. I bookmarked this spot a few months back now, my husband and I were in the neighborhood so we decided to try it! It is quite difficult to spot the shop from McDowell, we had to use our GPS. The parking lot is small, but we were able to find a spot right away. The wall art is beautiful by the way! The inside of the coffee shop is well decorated, like I said there was a vintage feel to it. They actually share the place with a clothing shop, we browsed around a bit after we drank our coffee. I ordered the "Cortado", it is an espresso with a touch of warm milk. The coffee itself was very good, it had a good taste. My husband got the small hot latte and he enjoyed it as well. read more

I'm not too familiar with the coffee shop vibes from Phoenix or AZ but this place feels like it belongs with the shops in familiar with back home in Nor Cal. I had the baked eggs and honey vanilla latte since yelp raved about it. The honey vanilla flavor is very faint which allows you to still taste the espresso. The baked eggs were spot on. My total price was $13 which is fair... To me. The store layout is nice. The bar is the focal point. And the entire front door/wall opens up! Very cool. The coffee was pretty good. I had a honey latte. It was nice although not as amazing as some other reviewer's have said it was. Maybe it was an off day. I cannot tell you how much coffee means to me, it is The Alpha to my day (Does that make sense?) and without it my day can fail. So about Giant Coffee... You will like it because it's brought to you by the creators of Matt's big breakfast and they care about quality and creating a warm environment for you to visit everyday. They are not 5 stars yet because they can focus on better service, the coffee is great but the coffee takes too long to prep. Argue all you want but a coffee shop should be fast. Especially if they make you get your coffee when they call you. Or you have to have someone serving and taking it to your table. Lastly you need to open early!!
