I ordered the Gang Dong Red Curry with Tofu from the Classic Dishes menu. It was ready quickly. The bowls, with curved edges, are huge and so are the portions. The first thing I noticed about my curry dish is the sauce was very thin. But when the rice was added, it was the perfect consistency. The vegetables, including chestnuts, celery, red pepper green pepper, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and baby corn, were so fresh and tasty! They blended perfectly with the tofu and curry sauce. My friend and I asked for a takeout box because the portions were so large we couldn't finish it all. At first she brought the paper kind but then realized the food had a lot of liquid. She then brought a plastic container to avoid any spills! That was so thoughtful. It's a very soothing Japanese style atmosphere to sit and enjoy the meal. A beautiful textured mural on the wall was colorful and interesting.

The energy is good vibes only and the most important rule is no complaints. It is only joy and a shared experience of trying things you wouldn't normally splurge on. If you break the rule, you don't get invited back! On this particular night, I was 2 months postpartum and naturally ready to eat and drink all things sinful during pregnancy. Having 2 kids at home and a dutiful dad to watch them, I did not do the responsible thing, make a reservation weeks in advance. I highly recommend that you do this for this high end and highly sought sushi experience. I managed to get lucky and snag my group a 4:00 pm table for 4. I'm sure what you are thinking is that is incredibly too early to eat, but look at it this way - 2 of us have small children and truthfully eating fancy food while our husbands put the kids to bed and making it home just in time to snuggle up and watch tv ended up being absolutely perfect. First, the view is insane. You are perched atop a mountain overlooking 3 rivers converging. It's gorgeous. You will take a picture. Second, the service is outstanding. I've actually been twice this year just to confirm my first experience wasn't a fluke. Extremely attentive staff who make you believe they want you to have the best culinary experience possible, maybe they actually do! We ordered nearly everything on the menu. My favorite dish is the yellowtail jalapeno. It is unreal good. I also tried uni, which was very unique. Probably not something I need to indulge in every time, but still very cool. Our group enjoyed sharing all of our plates with each other. I left feeling so satisfied. It is an understatement to say that Otaru is excellent. We talked about this place for months afterward, with longing. It is definitely one of the best places to take guests from out of town to show them the finer side of Pittsburgh. I'm already looking forward to my next visit and it will probably always be at 4:00 pm.

It was shockingly not busy until about 630pm and they open at 4. There is no valet, just street parking. They provided complimentary edamame which had a great little spicy kick. I ordered the sour, the yuzu gave it a nice fresh citrus taste. My husband had a scotch and Coke. We decided to order the experience which began with a tartar (salmon, tuna and yellowtail on a bed of tuna). Amazing. We then had a two piece sashimi with jalapeño and crispy potato in a sauce that was similar to Italian dressing. This was our favorite of the entire night. Next was a shrimp tasting. It had shaved cucumber and seaweed in a light brown sauce, perhaps a mirin. It was okay, like a cold miso. We then had a dish I had only seen videos of called Chawanmushi. It was like an eggy flan served hot. My husband was not a fan but I was. Then was the first nigiri which the bartender was kind enough to split for us. It included 4 light pieces of sushi. After that there was a cold infused tomato palate cleanser and the second nigiri with "darker" fish. It was all delicious. After that was a fatty tuna hand roll (like a sushi taco) which was amazing as well. And last for the savory items, a soft shell crab which was very, very good. The yellow sauce tasted like the yellow of a potato salad with tastes that mimicked mayo, mustard and pickles. We ordered another round of drinks and I had a dirty martini which they called The New 32. The last item is the red bean dessert but we opted to order more food and had the Treasure Box ($78) which had 9 different sashimis. There were a few repeats from the experience portion but we were happy to have the first sashimi item again. And last, we had the red bean dessert as well as a complimentary tiramisu dessert for the husband's birthday. The bill was just over $300 which was expected for the location, amount of food and overall quality and experience.

The sesame-crusted seared tuna was excellent, especially paired with the pesto-forward dressing. I also enjoyed a spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado roll, and grilled eel avocado roll. Kiku remains my favorite sushi in Pittsburgh: the fish is exceptionally fresh, the rice texture is spot-on, and the presentation is consistently beautiful. That attention to detail extends beyond the food. Even the plates are carefully chosen for visual impact and complement the quiet, calming atmosphere, with Japanese decor and soft instrumental music. The servers have always been warm and friendly, and they're happy to recommend highlights from the menu. Even the warm towels brought out before the meal are a thoughtful touch. After coming here for so many years, Kiku is still a place I wholeheartedly recommend.

My wife and I went for dinner on a Friday and had no wait (though they do allow online reservations). Service was pleasant and leisurely (which we liked) and the place wasn't too crowded. Our favorite item was the veggie tempura appetizer. It had 7-8 pieces, all different veggies, and all nice and crispy. The seaweed salads were good too. We shared three rolls - tuna avocado, salmon skin, and yellowfin tuna. All were good, particularly the yellowfin, which had nice soft fish. In general, the rolls were a bit heavier on the rice and lighter on the fish than I might have hoped, especially the salmon skin. Presentation was all very nice. My wife had the flan for dessert and gave it a thumbs up. Overall a good place, though I'm not sure we'd come back if we weren't otherwise going to Station Square.

This is a super cool spot, and I'd say it's great for everything from a quick bite to a full meal. I'd also highly recommend it for a date night. My only very minor consideration, and probably more of a summer thing (because I run a little hot), is that it can get a little warm near the open kitchen. It's on the third floor and they are cooking with proper charcoal skewers, so I think that's probably just part of the experience. Having said that, they do everything possible to keep it comfortable. The atmosphere is chill, and the service is excellent. Since we had dinner reservations nearby, we just wanted a couple of bites. The otoro was melt-in-your-mouth awesome--fresh, with high-quality sushi rice(my nephew said it was the best sushi he's had in the city). We also tried the chicken and wagyu beef robatayaki, both of which were perfectly cooked and finished with a delicious sweet and umami glaze. I'd definitely come back for a full meal, but it's also a great option if you're looking for a cool place to grab a cocktail or beer and a couple of appetizers before or after other plans.

I almost licked the plate! Veg spring rolls - ok, but not in the same universe as the dumplings. Entrees: * Katsuobushi Pork Ramen -- a spicy, smoky porky dreamy noodle dish. Wow. Flavor explosion! This is not for the dieting or health conscious, but it's soooo good. There's some serious pork belly inside! I've never had corn in ramen, but it's a nice, "cooling" moment in all that. The 1/2 marinated egg is lost in this dish - but bamboo shoots o & scallions are nice. * Shoyu Chicken Ramen - hard to hold a candle to the house specialty, which is clearly pork, but the chicken is nicely spiced and grilled (it really tasted smoked IMHO). The broth is flavorful. **Tons of noodles in both ramen dishes. We had leftovers. Really didn't like the cloyingly sweet Thai iced tea. Wished they had a hot tea lunch option. Our server was fine. Nothing really standout. The place was busy - both with people and a steady takeout/delivery business. And it's easy to see why! We'll be back.

I wouldn't really call this a supper club to be honest but the place definitely carries a house music bar vibe and the back bar area and seating is very dimly lit, perfect for cozying up and enjoying a drink late night. The ladies' room was so dark, I mistook it for a storage area because I could only make out a white ladder in the corner that was being used as cute shelving. The place is seat yourself. Our waiter was not super friendly and didn't offer to give us napkins or anything when our wobbly table caused our drinks to splash all over the place. The cook served our chicken with a big smile and happy interaction and we really loved his personality. The bartender also stopped by to bus our table and he was very pleasant as well. We enjoyed the perfectly fried small plate cauliflower with the plum sauce and the fried cheese/garlic wonton bites with the sriracha mayo spicy dipping sauce. The fried chicken breast on the large plate was slightly overcooked with a maple gochuchang sauce that was very bland. We were so thankful that the large plate fried chicken came with a side salad to offer some respite from the heaviness of the fried dishes. It would have been great to have some side acidic or fresh vegetable options like Kimchi or something. Maybe we tried the wrong dishes and there are other not fried things that are delicious? The dirty martini cocktail was just so-so, not really much flavor at all, but the mojito was very good and refreshing. It's probably a good late-night place for a bite and drink.
