I started with the miso soup, which was incredible. The tofu was so nicely cooked, even if you're not a tofu fan then this will make you change your mind. I got a nigiri plate, which was a nice sampler of what they have to offer. I chose this over the sashimi because this one already had the toppings built into it rather than the sashimi making your own toppings choices that all come on the side. I like to hear what the chef recommends with each fish so I didn't have to think about it. It had a tiny bit of wasabi in between the rice and the fish, which was nice and each fish had different toppings so you get quite a variety. They also have a chef special plate, but I didn't choose that just because I've never been here before, so I thought the regular plate would be fine. If I was a regular or more into fish, like knowing the differences between all of them then maybe I would make the chef's choice selection I did get a sashimi of Toro, though, and it tasted like butter. The tuna toast was fantastic. The milk bread that they use is out of this world and it was so fresh. I recommend adding some soy sauce to really complement it. The shrimp tempura hand roll was also very good. Nice size too. For dessert, we got the matcha-misu which was a play on tiramisu. It was very light and flavor, but still very good. I couldn't really taste the Matcha but the cream they used was delicious. We also got the chocolate torte, which was more rich/bitter with the sauce around the side but everything on the plate complemented each other very well, like having everything in one bite was perfect. The cocktails are also yummy. Our service was fantastic, she went over the top with explaining, and I was actually a little overwhelmed just because of the choices here. So much fish and I didn't know the name of any of them haha the place is small so recommend getting a reservation, but they also have bar seating. Vibes are cool. Overall, for everything that we got and being full at the end of it all...it was extremely pricey to get to that point. So maybe for a lunch it would be make more sense financially.

Sushi spot known for their sushi, handrolls, and gin! The place has an intimate vibe, with just a few tables and mostly counter seating, which makes it feel personal and interactive. Our waitress was fantastic: walked us through the menu, offered genuinely helpful suggestions, and very attentive. I definitely recommend making a reservation. We had a reservation for two on a Wednesday evening at 5:30pm, which we made about 1-2 weeks beforehand. For drinks, I ordered a Shun mocktail with Yuzu + jasmine, which was super refreshing, as well as DreamLife (orange, vanilla, citrus, orange blossom water, and soda), which tasted like an orange creamsicle. Miso soup was bigger than the typical small bowl, filled with savory shiitake mushrooms, flavor was excellent, although I do wish it came out a bit hotter. Sashimi platter included maguro, salmon, hamachi, kanpachi, madai, fish roe, toro, scallop, assorted house pickles. Handrolls were perfect 2-3 bite rolls. We ordered the beef tartare, red crab, hamachi, spicy scallop, eel, and toro. The fish was fresh and high-quality. We lastly ordered matcha misu, which was a matcha twist on tiramisu, light and creamy, and lovely finish to the meal. Overall, an excellent dining experience with standout fish, thoughtful service, and a cozy atmosphere. Would absolutely return!

We were very excited to finally get a reservation at Gi-Jin at a regular dinner time! The vibe and service was exceptional. Our hostess was so helpful, fun and friendly. However, for the price and portions, it was disappointing. The food was delicious but we left still hungry. We ordered the edamame, dynamite crab plate (to share), beef tartare and shrimp tempura hand roll. The wine I had was also delicious - similar to a Sauvignon blanc with a touch of sage. I'd recommend to anyone but order a lot or leave hungry.

They separated the condiments, love that!

If I lived in Pittsburgh I would be here every week! Outstanding!! Ambience is peaceful, classic deep, soothing woods. Be aware outside is understated but it is beside the Starbucks. The food was so fresh with perfect seasonings, I am a salt junkie but did not need. Regan is a gem- warm, friendly, informative. When the dishes were presented. It was done with knowledge and pride. Come here- you will have no regrets!!

4-4.5 stars for food rounded up to 5 for excellent service Came here recently for a work event and there were the dynamite crab was a standout, an excellent fusion of flavors, the smokiness of the torched rice blending very well the lemon sauce and red crab. The bara chirashi is a nice way to try out some of the fish they have available for the day before springing for the nigiri. The hamachi crudo and beef tataki were both interesting flavor combinations, but the ponzu in the crudo overwhelmed the hamachi. Portion sizes are definitely on the small size. Service was very attentive and friendly. They have small tables so don't come with a group larger than 4.

The ambiance was really nice. Perfect for a date night. The restaurant is on the smaller side which I really liked. It felt intimate and intentional. I also loved the rnb/ neo-soul playlist! I was rockin' out the whole meal. What we ordered Edamame: I love edamame. At Gi-Jin it was pretty basic. Hand rolls Mushroom: Fire! It was delicious. Really enjoyed the crunch and the flavor. Shrimp Tempura: nicely breaded and the sauce was light. Spicy Tune: Was pretty good! Really liked the tempura crisp. Drinks: Lychee light club: was too sweet for my pallet. The drink was also very strong. Gin & Tonic: My partner said it was "okay" and "basic".

Came for a girl dinner and shared a bunch of different plates. The cocktails and wine selection were good. The fish was so fresh and melts in your mouth! Our server was very knowledgable and helped decide whats good to share and have a good range. The space is small and intimate, and we were obsessed with the little chopsticks holders! If you need a nice spot for a dinner reservation and want quality sashimi this is the perfect spot!

Genuinely my favorite food spot in all of Pittsburgh, but certainly needs treated as a rare treat unless you've got ample money to throw around. I've made it a point to try and go at least once a year. They import their fish from Japan, so everything is exceptional quality (unlike any other I've ever had) and the taste experiences are incredible. The toro, both salmon and traditional tuna, are both to die for. The lighting and general vibe of the place are honestly just as appealing as the food, as it's the sort of place that makes you feel like you're partaking in an experience rather than just a meal. As said before, the quality is top notch, but you will shell out a good bit of money if you want to satisfy your appetite. The first time I went here, I spent approximately $140 on myself. The second time was in a group outing, paying for another person in the group, and we got a little loose with our ordering of food and drink. I think, with tip, it ended up being close to $450-$475. I nearly died when I saw that bill. Do I think it was worth it? Yes. Can I make it a regular thing? As someone who sometimes lives paycheck to paycheck, absolutely not. Hahaha. If you're planning on going, I would generally recommend reservations and booking about a month in advance. TLDR; The people who work there are knowledgable, the food is high quality and worth the price, but view this as a treat kind of place rather than a regular spot... that bill will hit you hard.

Best sushi in Pittsburgh, everything was so fresh, and the toro just melted in your mouth. We haven't been back in 5 years, and it is still just as good, if not better than the first time. The service was great, and the staff was very friendly and attentive.

We had a reservation for two on a Wednesday, which was the soonest reservation we could book almost two months in advance. The wait was worth it! All of the food we ordered was scrumptious and the fish tasted very high quality. The matcha tiramisu was amazing and came in a small cup. The bathroom was fancy as well with a smart toilet. We parked in a parking garage for $10 since it was special event parking. Only street parking available near the actual restaurant which is very hard to get.

Visiting from out of town, this place was the perfect spot for wanting a great meal. Service was excellent as well. We were happy with all of our selections, can't really make a mistake as they were all excellent

This place is amazing. It was our first time here and the food was delicious. The service was great. Great people, great chefs.

Gi-jin is always an incredible experience! It can be difficult to get a reservation but it's worth it. My favorite items are the nigiri plates, they typically have one option with more standard fish and one with a chefs selection of fish, and the tuna pizza. The chocolate torte is a great way to end the meal! The service and atmosphere are top notch. There are limited tables, so if you're a party of 2, be aware that they seat you at the sushi bar. Definitely recommend Gi-Jin for a great night out

I ordered the Gang Dong Red Curry with Tofu from the Classic Dishes menu. It was ready quickly. The bowls, with curved edges, are huge and so are the portions. The first thing I noticed about my curry dish is the sauce was very thin. But when the rice was added, it was the perfect consistency. The vegetables, including chestnuts, celery, red pepper green pepper, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and baby corn, were so fresh and tasty! They blended perfectly with the tofu and curry sauce. My friend and I asked for a takeout box because the portions were so large we couldn't finish it all. At first she brought the paper kind but then realized the food had a lot of liquid. She then brought a plastic container to avoid any spills! That was so thoughtful. It's a very soothing Japanese style atmosphere to sit and enjoy the meal. I've been generally impressed by the quality of the sushi. We ordered takeout this time, and everything was extremely well packaged and presented. In terms of the food, we focussed on fairly standard maki rolls: a spicy salmon roll and a spicy California roll. Both were very nicely done. We also tried the veg farm roll, and that was a nice vegetable forward option. Not life changing, but nicely done. We also opted for a vegetable poke bowl, and that was also good. Basically the same combination of vegetables as the veg farm roll, but in a bowl format. The bowl was good, but it was lacking some sort of sauce or glaze that might have pulled things together. It was easy enough to toss on some condiments of our own, but the bowl could have been better. Overall, I this is my favorite sushi destination in Squirrel Hill. It's very clear that the owners are invested in turning out a high quality experience, and that's exactly the type of business I like to support.

Their selection of appetizers were great, and the quality of each was stellar. We attempted to try quite a few of them, and still have many we want to try. In our group, the tofu with an amazing dashi broth, the crab puffs, "sexy jalepenos", tempura kani, and the gyoza were the standouts. As I stated, though...everything we had was awesome. We all ordered a different ramen, and then shared. They were all phenomenal. The steak teriyaki was also great. Sushi wise, we didn't get to try as many as we had hoped. We were too busy reordering the appetizers. We did try the Crazy Mango roll, and ended up reordering that because it was so good. My kids were with me, and they love all things Mango, and this was phenomenal. For dessert, we had a few orders (and reorders!) of the fried bananas. Overall, I cannot speak higher of our experience. It is very clean, well kept up on, and the service was phenomenal. Quality wise, you can tell how much effort they put into the place purely on their presentation. I had to remark many times about how utterly beautiful some of their dishes were. This was not like our other AYCE experiences where they just rush food out to you. They actually put effort into their craft here, and it is quite obvious. We will definitely be back, and look forward to trying new things that we didn't get to before!

Having 2 kids at home and a dutiful dad to watch them, I did not do the responsible thing, make a reservation weeks in advance. I highly recommend that you do this for this high end and highly sought sushi experience. I managed to get lucky and snag my group a 4:00 pm table for 4. I'm sure what you are thinking is that is incredibly too early to eat, but look at it this way - 2 of us have small children and truthfully eating fancy food while our husbands put the kids to bed and making it home just in time to snuggle up and watch tv ended up being absolutely perfect. First, the view is insane. You are perched atop a mountain overlooking 3 rivers converging. It's gorgeous. You will take a picture. Second, the service is outstanding. I've actually been twice this year just to confirm my first experience wasn't a fluke. Extremely attentive staff who make you believe they want you to have the best culinary experience possible, maybe they actually do! We ordered nearly everything on the menu. My favorite dish is the yellowtail jalapeno. It is unreal good. I also tried uni, which was very unique. Probably not something I need to indulge in every time, but still very cool. Our group enjoyed sharing all of our plates with each other. I left feeling so satisfied. It is an understatement to say that Otaru is excellent. I ordered the sour, the yuzu gave it a nice fresh citrus taste. My husband had a scotch and Coke. We decided to order the experience which began with a tartar (salmon, tuna and yellowtail on a bed of tuna). Amazing. We then had a two piece sashimi with jalapeño and crispy potato in a sauce that was similar to Italian dressing. This was our favorite of the entire night. Next was a shrimp tasting. It had shaved cucumber and seaweed in a light brown sauce, perhaps a mirin. It was okay, like a cold miso. We then had a dish I had only seen videos of called Chawanmushi. It was like an eggy flan served hot. My husband was not a fan but I was. Then was the first nigiri which the bartender was kind enough to split for us. It included 4 light pieces of sushi. After that there was a cold infused tomato palate cleanser and the second nigiri with "darker" fish. It was all delicious. After that was a fatty tuna hand roll (like a sushi taco) which was amazing as well. And last for the savory items, a soft shell crab which was very, very good. The yellow sauce tasted like the yellow of a potato salad with tastes that mimicked mayo, mustard and pickles. We ordered another round of drinks and I had a dirty martini which they called The New 32. The last item is the red bean dessert but we opted to order more food and had the Treasure Box ($78) which had 9 different sashimis. There were a few repeats from the experience portion but we were happy to have the first sashimi item again. And last, we had the red bean dessert as well as a complimentary tiramisu dessert for the husband's birthday. The bill was just over $300 which was expected for the location, amount of food and overall quality and experience.

The atmosphere at Soba is undeniably gorgeous and fancy, and from a service standpoint, the staff was a absolute super. We had a large party, and even though joining tables isn't really their standard setup, they were incredibly patient, gracious, and accommodated us without hesitation. Our server was super knowledgeable, gave great recommendations, and we ad fun all night right up until closing. The appetizers started off strong: the Shrimp Tempura was wonderfully crispy with a delicious dipping sauce, the Tuna Crispy Rice was great, and the Double Salmon Roll had an (interesting) exotic twist with jalapeño on top. Unfortunately, things took a sharp turn with my main dish, the Crab Fried Rice. While the portion was huge, the flavor was extremely bland and flat--the crab got completely lost in a sea of rice. Worse, it was absolutely overwhelmed by an HUGE amount of cilantro; even as someone who likes cilantro, finding a giant bunch buried in the bowl totally ruined the dish. My friends' dishes, like the Chirashi, looked an tasted much better. To make matters worse, a few hours after returning home, I became violently ill and stayed sick for the entire next day--something that almost never happens to me. While I truly appreciate the incredible hospitality and front-of-house team, the combination of a disappointing dish and getting so sick afterward makes it impossible for me to give this place more than 2 stars.
