Shokunin Secret - foie gras with fruit, wine sauce, and black tobiko; toro tartare
    Karen H.

I love trying a little bit of everything so I had to try the omakase experience at Okane! This experience is located on their second floor and we sat at the chef's counter which I recommend so you can see the chefs work their magic! In addition to the chef's counter on the second floor, there are multiple tables along with little semi-private rooms. The vibe is upscale and nicer. You can choose between their 16, 18, or 20 course experiences at different price points and we ended up choosing the 20 course experience which included wagyu and the shokunin secret courses which ran us $188 each. Their presentation was really creative and everything was pretty good! The cocktails were excellent and I adored my mango sticky rice cocktail in particular. All of us enjoyed this fun theatrical culinary experience and it's perfect for a special occasion.

Phenomenal service, everyone was knowledgeable about the dishes. Sometimes it was difficult to hear from the chefs what we were eating because it did get loud at times but everyone was so patient in explaining things. I was truly surprised at how amazing all the drinks were. The Kasumi Lychee tasted just like lychee and didn't feel too much like artifical syrup. The Midnight Okane was perfectly sweet as well and very beautiful. Now for the best part, the food. I was extremely pleased with the 18 course. I was initially worried about getting enough food because of the small bites but that wasn't an issue, I barely could make it through all the sashimi! The stars of the show for me were the pani puri, waygu tartare, scallops and the show stopper for me was the duck breast! I wish I could just eat the duck breast everyday. It was evident alot of thought, creativity and artistry was put into the courses. My only question is how often they rotate the menu so we can come back again! Price wise, its not cheap at all, but definitely an experience thats worth the extra spending for a special occasion.

Did the rooftop and it was cute. The flame-b-banana old fashioned was yummy, but very sweet. Loved the presentation (fire). The rolls are all the same to me and I enjoyed it. Service was also great

The sushi was delicious but the service was too slow. Lunchtime in downtown Pittsburgh requires appropriate staff to meet the lunch rush needs. There was one server doing it all. We all waited a long time for everything from ordering to paying the bill. I didn't like the Salad and the lunch special was expensive. The previous namesake Sushi i had more cost effective specials and the salad was delicious. All the steps to get to the rooftop were another challenge so I doubt I return to this restaurant.

Stopped here with my wife for dinner on a weekday evening to try their omakase experience. Having tried omakase while traveling in Japan, we were excited to see what this place had to offer right here in Pittsburgh. They took us up a staircase to their special omakase dining room on the second floor where we chose to sit right at the bar. The dining area was dimly lit and had an elegant vibe. We ordered the 16 course tasting menu, which was actually their smallest option. Don't worry about getting too much food, each course is only 1-2 bites of food. It was interesting to watch them prepare all of the plates right in front of us. I am definitely not an authority on this style of food, and some of the dishes I enjoyed more than others. Overall, the sushi seemed fresh and well prepared, though some of the items definitely pushed me out of my culinary comfort zone! If you are not an adventurous eater, be prepared and find some pictures of the items to make sure this is for you. At one point they blew edible gold dust on us/our food. This was kind of a fun moment, but maybe not for everyone so be aware and decline it ahead of time if you don't want it.

    Vg to me taco
    Maansi S.

Not sure how to feel about this place. The staff were friendly. But there weren't a lot of vegetarian options on the menu. The Vg to Me taco wasn't bad, and the rice to seaweed, cucumber, and avocado ratio wasn't bad. There was too much seaweed or not enough avocado because I didn't realize there was any avocado in my taco until the very last bite. This is a new restaurant, so I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they improve. I'd love to see more vegetarian options if possible! Also, if you do choose to get the sushi tacos, I recommend getting at least 2 if you're hungry! The spicy edamame were okay, not sure if I'd recommend that again. Some edamame pieces had too much spice on them and others had none at all. I do wish the best for this restaurant and I would like to come back again to try something else.

Okane Sushi restaurant recently had its soft opening, and my husband and I ate dinner there. The menu listed starters (e.g., spicy peanut edamame and takoyaki), soups, salads, sushi tacos, signature rolls, fruit green teas, whiskeys, wines, sake, cocktails, beers, sodas, etcetera. The seating host/server provided timely and courteous service. The dining area was small, but he explained that an upstairs dining area and a rooftop will soon open. My husband and I focused on the sushi tacos. The tacos were a decent size, and the server had recommended that each person order 2-3 sushi tacos to fill up. Each taco cost only several dollars. The menu lists several flavors of signature tacos with crispy nori shells. Furthermore, customers may customize build-your-own sushi tacos by choosing 1) a shell (either hard deep-fried seaweed and rice paper or soft seaweed), 2) rice (sushi rice, brown rice, or house-special rice), 3) protein (salmon, tuna, snapper, beef, tamago omelette, shrimp tempura, yellowtail, scallop, octopus salad, etc.), 4) vegetable (cucumber, avocado, onion, lettuce, oshinko, etc.), 5) sauce (spicy mayo, eel, sriracha chili, yum yum, etc.), and 6) topping (masago, Cheetos, sesame, etc.) I ate the Spicy Seafood taco (tuna, salmon, avocado, cucumber, wasabi mayo, eel sauce, and masago) and the Fresh Okane taco (salmon, tuna, yellowtail, mango, jalapeno, rice, wasabi, mayo, furikake, and masago). I enjoyed both very much. The shells were perfectly hard and crunchy, and the fillings tasted delicious. My husband ordered two build-your-own sushi tacos. One taco contained a hard shell, teriyaki chicken, sushi rice, apple, and honey-soy glaze, and the other taco contained a hard shell, sushi rice, tuna, avocado, spicy mayo, and green onion. My husband told me that he was not expecting to like these sushi tacos but that they ended up being "tasty." He, however, still felt hungry after eating two, so he would order several (!) in the future. I also drank a passion fruit green tea, and I really liked its flavors.

Sat outside on the rooftop, great views! Clean space, specialty drinks were fantastic and very fresh fish. Great place for a date night or ladies night out! Service was also good, we waited a little longer for drinks to come out, however, it was well worth it.

Stumbled upon this place when and what a cute surprise it was. The weather was beautiful, so that definitely helped the vibe for the spot. Service was friendly and attentive. LOVED my roll. Would definitely visit again when I'm in the city.

Okane sushi taco and spicy tuna taco

Okane Sushi was much smaller than I expected, but quaint and cozy nonetheless. I think just a few tables (~3) and bar seating, and I did notice a baby high chair tucked away in the corner. The space has a modern, inviting aesthetic, and the service was fantastic, especially considering there was only one server running the entire restaurant. The sushi tacos were the real standout for me! It was a fun, unique twist on sushi, and the only place in PGH where you can get something like this. The taco shell is made from fried nori and rice paper and gives a serious CRUNCH. You can build your own taco, but we went with the signature options. My favorite was the Fresh Okane taco with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and mango. We also tried the Broken Heart Roll with spicy tuna, which was beautifully plated, but not as memorable. The creamy udon, though? Absolutely fantastic and 10/10 would recommend. It had a rich, savory sauce and perfectly squishy noodles. Overall, I'd come back if I'm in the area, and especially for the crispy tacos and hot plates. I cannot wait till they open their omakase restaurant upstairs!!

This spot near Market Square had some really delicious sushi! Absolutely loved their pizza tacos, they had amazing textures and the taco shell made of nori and rice paper was so crispy. I've lived in NYC and haven't really seen these before! Loved the Okane pizza too- it was like crispy rice but had the perfect chew and the wasabi and eel sauces were so balanced with the fresh tuna and salmon. Staff was so friendly and nice with great recs. Their rolls and apps were good too. They had great drinks too- we liked the matcha one and the yuzu margarita! The matcha one tasted just like a matcha latte. The space is nicely renovated too and was vibey. Definitely recommend coming here for a bite when you're downtown or looking for something new to try!

I've been generally impressed by the quality of the sushi. We ordered takeout this time, and everything was extremely well packaged and presented. In terms of the food, we focussed on fairly standard maki rolls: a spicy salmon roll and a spicy California roll. Both were very nicely done. We also tried the veg farm roll, and that was a nice vegetable forward option. Not life changing, but nicely done. We also opted for a vegetable poke bowl, and that was also good. Basically the same combination of vegetables as the veg farm roll, but in a bowl format. The bowl was good, but it was lacking some sort of sauce or glaze that might have pulled things together. It was easy enough to toss on some condiments of our own, but the bowl could have been better. Overall, I this is my favorite sushi destination in Squirrel Hill. It's very clear that the owners are invested in turning out a high quality experience, and that's exactly the type of business I like to support.

Their selection of appetizers were great, and the quality of each was stellar. We attempted to try quite a few of them, and still have many we want to try. In our group, the tofu with an amazing dashi broth, the crab puffs, "sexy jalepenos", tempura kani, and the gyoza were the standouts. As I stated, though...everything we had was awesome. We all ordered a different ramen, and then shared. They were all phenomenal. The steak teriyaki was also great. Sushi wise, we didn't get to try as many as we had hoped. We were too busy reordering the appetizers. We did try the Crazy Mango roll, and ended up reordering that because it was so good. My kids were with me, and they love all things Mango, and this was phenomenal. For dessert, we had a few orders (and reorders!) of the fried bananas. Overall, I cannot speak higher of our experience. It is very clean, well kept up on, and the service was phenomenal. Quality wise, you can tell how much effort they put into the place purely on their presentation. I had to remark many times about how utterly beautiful some of their dishes were. This was not like our other AYCE experiences where they just rush food out to you. They actually put effort into their craft here, and it is quite obvious. We will definitely be back, and look forward to trying new things that we didn't get to before!

My usual order is the chicken katsu bento box, which comes with a good portion of crunchy sliced chicken katsu, rice, two dumplings, a California roll, and miso soup. It feels like a solid, filling meal with enough variety to make it satisfying. The only downside with my most recent takeout order was the sauce placed in the middle of the container. I'm not sure exactly what it was, and after tasting it, it wasn't really for me. Because of the layout of the takeout container, some of it spilled into the rice and rolls. Next time, I'd probably ask for that sauce on the side in a separate container.

The restaurant is located right on Mt Washington, giving a good view of the city. The interior looks appropriate for a sushi restaurant, but due to the massive windows lacked the darker vibe of other upscale restaurants. I've been to hundreds of sushi spots and the interior was merely average. Otaru seems to struggle with its identity. It needs to either commit to being an upscale restaurant or relax and simply be a quality one. The wait staff were kind and prompt, but at times appeared they may be less experienced. We were brought hot (paper) towels and edamame. We ordered the fried tako balls as an app. I personally don't prefer tako and found it very dense and chewy and the overall flavors were too undeveloped. The hand rolls were well filled and were easy to eat due to being more of a taco configuration than a true hand roll. The nori was not too tough, lending to a pleasant experience. The nigiri and sashimi were also good. The nigiri were good, but not as elevated as another upscale sushi spot in the city. They were still very good, but not quite excellent. They either need a bit more development or to be relaxed and served as two per order and the price adjusted slightly upward. If you take one thing from this review, let it be this. The yellowtail jalepeno cups were astonishing. By far this was the most well executed dish I have ever eaten and the best sushi dish I've had. They appear to be wrapped in toasted sesame seed wrappers. If you've had Hapi mixed crackers they give the same great flavor of the "fried chicken" pieces but with yuzu vinaigrette and the umami of the fish. I will certainly be back solely because of how good they were.
