We went there for Thanksgiving Day lunch. The place is dark and is better suited for dinner it's actually depressing during the day. The food was very expensive and unimpressive. A thanksgiving dish was $35 and looked more like an appetizer; the turkey was ok but the rest was shameful for any restaurant that wants to be called decent. Maybe a good place to go for drinks and some cheese and prosciutto in the evening. Otherwise, disappointing. And expensive. read more

Beautiful interiors, live music, not too loud, and connected to the rooftop pool for this hotel where you can soak in the view of the city. Their staff is friendly and drinks are delicious. Outstanding . The service was exceptional -- much better than I've come to expect from new restaurants on Rainey. The food was superb. Ordered about 5 small plates for two of us . Plenty of food. It was my wife's bday. She wasn't a big fan of the chicory salad but I liked it . The hamachi was excellent . Carrots were really unique . They reminded me of a vegetarian brisket -- nice smoky flavor . Roasted beets also really tasty . I had an old fasioned which wasn't too sweet as I had specified . William , our server , inquired whether we were celebrating a special occasion without be tipping him off even. This is the restaurant on the 4th floor of the new Hotel Van Zandt near Rainey Street. Like most restaurants within Kimpton brand hotels, it was excellent. I really enjoyed two appetizers later at night when they had a great Blues-Rock band playing. The sausage merguez with white beans was super flavorful and filling. I then had the pork ribs in a sweet Asian sauce. They were delectable. I almost ordered them again for lunch the next day when I ate near the pool. Instead I tried the cauliflower with nut cremoulata followed by a turkey sandwich special (for the Kentucky Derby that was later that day). I liked them both. The décor is really cool with an industrial feel, and there are views of the buildings downtown from several of the tables. And of course the drinks were expertly made. I had a Kentucky Bourbon cocktail that I loved. After dinner, you can easily transition to the pool area right outside which also has a bar and spectacular views of the downtown. Don't walk in hungry because you will be disappointed. The restaurant goes to extremes to save on food costs. We paid $14 for an "heirloom tomato salad" with no lettuce and about a quarter of a tomato chopped into small pieces. The portion sizes were minuscule at best with no protein to be found but a $45 steak. The music and ambiance were nice but I definitely would not plan on eating there again. read more

If there was a good score the place would get a 2.5, for decor it would get a 4.5. Really nice place, but the food lacked any trace of defining flavor. I went with my girlfriend for brunch. Had the quiche, French toast, short rib potato hash. The quiche was under cooked and had no flavor. The French toast was very bland, felt like it needed nutmeg or cinnamon. The short rib was great but the portion was maybe 4/5 bites, would need to order two of them to feel full probably. read more

I had an event planned at Geraldine's over 2 weeks before the date, and they called to cancel the reservation due to "double booking" and tell me anything I had planned was off the table 1.5 days before the event- 30 people, special order cake and cocktails, invitations had been sent out already, etc. The manager was very unapologetic, unwilling to compromise, and I was very disheartened. I will never give Geraldine's my business again because they're customer service is so poor. read more

Pros: Good food, great ambiance. We ordered crab toast and quesadilla with potatoes on the side and they were very good. We also ordered a cocktail called brewed looks like a latte and it was good too. Cons: Bad service. After we were seated, we ordered drink and 5 minutes later our food. We waited and waited. Our cocktail nor food had arrived even after other table who arrived after us got their food and drinks. 30 minutes passed and our waiter said the kitchen messed our order up with other table. She said she had not put in and did not remember our order. I was a bit confuse because she took a note of our order and how the kitchen messed up if she had not put order in? My husband asked for a menu so we can put our order again and she just stand around, did not even try to offer any resolution. After my husband asked the menu for the 4th time, she finally pick it up for us. I was so upset. We left the table and told the receptionist that we want to make a complain. The manager came and asked us to stay after we explained the situation. She apologized and said that we were not the 1st one complaining about Kathleen. She took care of us and our bill. I am not sure if we will come back to Geraldine's. There are plenty of restaurants in Austin with much better service and food. They should pick their waiters more carefully. Way over priced and we left hungry. I didn't even have a huge appetite. In fact I had just had a major surgery and was barely hungry yet still left this place wanting more food. My friend and I spent $90 on brunch. She got chicken and waffles and I got eggs Benedict. We both had subpar bloody Mary's for $10 each. I don't mind paying for good food. This was ridiculous. Geraldine's puzzles me: On one hand, I really want to love it. On the other, there's something about it that just leaves me feeling distinctly unsatisfied. I'm not really certain how to reconcile it. I will say that it's definitely marketed as a trendy, up-scale place. Small plate options for sharing, different types of seating for pairs, can seat larger groups. Service was lovely. To start: their drinks menu is amazing. There's a ton of wine options, and they have some fun, clever cocktails too. Prices are pretty in-line with other tourist-type locations around Austin. Expensive, but not unreasonable. For two people, we ordered 3 small plates and a dessert. It was enough food for two un-ambitious eaters, but if you prefer larger portions, prepare to order more. We probably could have gotten another plate and done well with it. The waitress recommended the smoked yellow taco: it was good, but not my thing. It's very much as-described, so if it sounds good to you, chances are you'll like it. The warm chicory salad was tasty (the walnuts were an inspired addition) but not show-stopping. The crispy pork ribs were easily the stand-out of the dinner plates and I probably would have been happy having a plate all to myself. Dessert was interesting ("Biscuits and gravy"). It's a clever play on dessert and I really enjoyed it. Ultimately I feel as if the prices aren't really a reflection of the quality of the meal (bland, boring, small servings) you get. Had an amazing dining experience here last night. Filled with surprise, unexpected touches and food filled with a depth that resonated. Gorgeous setting, amazing views over Austin and free 2 hr valet parking started us off on the right foot. Waiter was fantastic and attentive. Tried the sunflower risotto first. Wow, talk about surprising and unexpected melodies of flavors. Citrusy, yet nutty. Fresh yet developed flavor. The sirloin steak dish was on par as well. Actually, the cloud like puff of potato and mushroom mixture underneath resonated more with me than the steak. Those hush puppies are still lingering on my tastebud's memory. Hot sauce mixed with the creamy sauce mixed with the fermented chiles in the hush puppies made an out of this world combo!! The sauce came in a lovely little glass bottle. Being pregnant, I was sad about not being able to try a cocktail so I went with a mock tail. Was beautifully served with a live orchid on top. Very refreshing but needed that gin or something sweet to balance it. Ok, so at the end when we got our bill....they gave it to us not in one of those typical plastic trays but in a vintage book that looked like it was from the late 1800's or early 1900's. The atmosphere is great - awesome décor and nice patio by the hotel pool. Definitely not something you'd ever expect to see on Rainey street. However, the food is good, but not exceptional, and certainly not worth the steep prices for such small portions. All of the dishes are "share plates", which means you'll only be getting a few bites of each plate, and even less if you're dining with more than 1 person. Short rib was great but literally about 3-4 bites each for my date and I. Same portion with the cauliflower dish, which was a little bland. Hush puppies were good but I would think it would be hard to really screw those up. I'd probably go back for just drinks. There are many other places in Austin where the food is just as good, or better, for the price you're paying. read more

I had brunch and was deeply disappointed. I has an Texas farm omelet and basically that is what they served me in a white plate. I expected more out of a restaurant of this level. Basically egg on the middle of a white plate, no garnishing, no potatoes, no parsley Nothing. They had a live band which is nice. But it was too loud for breakfast time. My wife and I shared a fantastic meal at Geraldine's on a Saturday night. The kitchen delivers some of the most creative and satisfying food in Austin. However, if I were running the kitchen, I would be furious with the front of the house. The sloppy, inattentive, mostly cold service completely overshadowed the great work being done in the kitchen. It's as if you have adults in the kitchen and (mean) high-schoolers hosting and serving diners. My wife and I played a game of watching diners' faces as they ate (majority smiles) and their faces as wait staff approached (majority frowns). The game was fun until we realized that so many people were feeling as uncomfortable as we were. We left disappointed. Geraldine's could be an outstanding place for a festive, high-quality meal with a grownup or two overseeing the dining room. Finally, beware parking on a Friday or Saturday night. Valet often fills up (confirmed by the valet manager) leaving very few nearby parking options. It took us 40 minutes to sort parking out. Also, don't expect an apology from valet or anyone at Geraldine's. They are masters at the shrug with a smile, but not much more. read more

We sat down to great music and a great atmosphere, ready for a fun and yummy jazz brunch. Looking at the menu, everything sounded so good, it was hard to make a decision, but I ended up going with one of the waiter's recommendations, the fried potato tot hash. Unfortunately, it was not super flavorful, lacking seasoning. I asked for Tabasco, which helped. Under-seasoning of food seemed to be a theme for all of my friends' food as well (there were 7 of us total, with 4 different dishes tried). The service was ok, by Austin standards, but I had to flag down the waiter every time I needed something. Didn't actually make it inside to see the restaurant. Valet treated me so poorly that I will never be coming back. They tried to charge me $20 up front and $20 per hour after that, which is unheard of. I've never had to pay before even having my car valeted, and I've definitely never been charged an hourly rate for valet. Not to mention that the employee who talked to me was dismissive and rude throughout the entire exchange. I'll probably come back to check out the restaurant sometime when I park my car elsewhere, but not anytime soon. I can only hope that hotel guests are not treated so poorly when checking in. read more

The bartenders were all great. Nick was super helpful & friendly. He gave us a list of places that the staff there compiled of places to try in Austin. The drinks were all fantastic.
