At Ace on 9th, you walk in 2 yards to be greeted by a knowledgeable guy asking whatcha looking for, then he shows where it is. I haven't felt this at-home since Thanksgiving '98 when Grandpa and I road a tandem bicycle to Olive Garden and filled our bellies to the brim with bottomless salad and breadsticks! (He's passed away now - gluten allergy) When walking into the store, you may shed a tear, because at this Ace hardware, you're family. The kind staff and I always hold hands as I browse about the store...and NO it's NOT because they're concerned for my safety!! Stop being silly, ya silly goose...Maybe a wrench, maybe some rock salt, heck maybe even just a random bottle of hot sauce...the options are endless! They have everything, at very reasonable city prices. The clerk referred me to Lock and Safe in Englewood. The clerk explained that they had not received training for car keys. Service We walked to the register just as you enter the store. The cashier was with a customer. My aunt and I waited patiently to ask a question. I wanted to know where to go and get the keys made in the store. My aunt is 92 and I did not want to walk around looking for where the keys are made in the store. Anyway, we waited and waited. Never did the cashier acknowledged us or seem concerned that we were waiting. Once she concluded helping her customer she said how can I help you. She was nice and directed us to the back of the store. My complaint, she could have acknowledged us with, I will be with you in a moment. Do you have a quick question? But I have a feeling I am too old fashioned! But I feel elderly people (me included) are invisible or the individual is not a multitasker, and I understand. Key clerk Very nice and upfront. Made a referral by pointing me to the locksmith sign on the wall and sent us on our way. 3 stars since service overall was mediocre.

Today I used a $5 off coupon I had earned as well as a 10% off coupon that had come in the mail. It's actually very competitively priced if you participate. I headed straight for the tool section, where Jude helped me track down the exact drill bits I needed. Both Jude and Nathan were excellent--helpful, patient, and friendly. The product selection is solid, but what really stood out is the level of customer service. It's rare these days to find retail staff who go above and beyond, and these two certainly did (even humoring me as I reminisced about my own time working in retail). As a funny side note, I even got the chance to chase after a customer and his dog after he accidentally left a dog bone behind at the counter. Unfortunately, I wasn't fast enough to return it--maybe he'll return for his purchase! All in all, great selection, great service, and a team that makes shopping here a genuinely positive experience.

I shared my harrowing tale, and he let me know that they did have some snake repellant in an aisle by the register that worked pretty well. I picked up a small container of "Snake-a-Way" with my other items and was ready to arm myself against future snakes. Obviously a journeyman position until the person finds something better with more pay. Never the same person when I come in. Now, on to products and service. Came in today for a spark plug check. First thing was to check the gap, go back, start the machine. I suspected the plug was bad, but started with this. Well guess what, they sell spark plugs, but don't have a gap tool! I commented to the person every machine is different, it does not come off the assembly line correct with this. She just looked at me like I was more than crazy. Did not even offer to help me find a replacement plug. Popcorn hour for the staff? I went to the auto parts store, simple gap tool for reasonable price. If I need building or hardware, I just go to Lowes or HomeDepot. The problem is they cannot connect the dots on a project. Part of that is they don't keep good staff, and that is what I come here for, advice and direction. And, they are frequently out of needed items. Correction - what I used to come here for...

I have spent several thousand dollars a year at this store over the past decade. I placed a featherweight 2 inch by 2 inch box with a tiny light bulb in it on the stainless steel side table of a display grill while I bent over to tie my shoe. I was absolutely skewered and belittled in front of the whole store by an "older" woman working there yelling that I was damaging their property. I thought she was joking and laughed it off until she kept going treating me like a hoodlum. There were six other employees around and none asked her to calm down which I found really strange. I walked out the door and have been too traumatized to return. This was my second bizarre run in with this employee. I now give all my business to Cherry Creek Ace. Too bad.

K did not "Ace" the customer service vibe by a long shot. Not a good feel to be corrected impatiently. I needed help, after all. It appears others don't like their service at this True Value and I'd heard this since my first hardware trip in Denver about 14 years ago. I thought not long ago that the ownership had changed. After the previous day's experience, I was willing to try them out, regardless. Having a bike shop upstairs that I needed to visit was icing on the cake. It may be shouting into the void, but I want to share that True Value hooked me up with parts, advice/instructions, in a prompt encounter that made me feel heard and valued. Unreal! Like a Twilight Zone episode! Never in my life have I experienced retail staff as rude and incompetent as this. I could see why he was "too busy to help me" though, since the store was torn apart and seemed to be getting renovated while they were open - it was a huge mess with junk all over the floor in the aisles, and trip hazards everywhere.
