This was my second visit, this time to return a few items. At checkout, I joked with Nathan that I'd probably end up spending twice my refund--and sure enough, I did. I headed straight for the tool section, where Jude helped me track down the exact drill bits I needed. Both Jude and Nathan were excellent--helpful, patient, and friendly. The product selection is solid, but what really stood out is the level of customer service. It's rare these days to find retail staff who go above and beyond, and these two certainly did (even humoring me as I reminisced about my own time working in retail). As a funny side note, I even got the chance to chase after a customer and his dog after he accidentally left a dog bone behind at the counter. Unfortunately, I wasn't fast enough to return it--maybe he'll return for his purchase! All in all, great selection, great service, and a team that makes shopping here a genuinely positive experience. read more

Quest for phone in a real life claw game.... Climbing boulder canyon my son's phone was dropped and thought to be lost down a 12ft crevice. With Will manager of sporting goods and Terrys help we retrieved the phone. Will assisted with trouble shooting all sorts of ideas. In the end we went with double sided clear flex tape attached to a suction cup at the end of a painters pole. It barely reached needed perfect lighting and finally we got it. Phone is in as good condition as when it was dropped. read more

I came in for a set screw, within 1 minute of being in the hardware section an employee asked if I needed help, I showed him what I needed and he knew exactly the right size and where it was. I'm so thankful for all the help I received at McGuckin. I entered with my doorknob and lock mechanism in a ziploc bag and hoped someone would be able to help me find the right screw to fix it. I learned from Matt's expert help that the screw was still in the doorknob, and it reverse threaded (all information I was oblivious to). Matt helped me fix it on the spot and told me which Allen wrench I needed to purchase to fix it in the future. All employees were friendly and offered to help point me in the right direction. If you like hardware stores, you will love McGuckin's because it's a hardware store plus! There is so much here. When I was there, it was specifically to get a hat. Little did I know I would end up with more. The Christmas area had lots of great decorations. The candles filled the air with fragrance. I needed Christmas gifts for my pups and found pig ears and collagen sticks that my lab loved. Lots of clothing and perfect winter gloves. Bookguy elected to wait in the car. By the time I got to the actual hardware section, I knew I wouldn't have time to be look it over. I did find a car window scraper which we needed. This experience is very disappointing, and I feel I was treated unfairly. Avoid at all costs. Deceptive business practices. I ordered 4 sets of ornaments from their website. The website clearly states that there are 3 ornaments included. The next day I get a text from them saying that they wanted to make me aware that the price shown is for one ornament and that it is not a set of three. I sent them a screen shot of their own website where it specifically says it is three ornaments. They then sent me a text minutes later saying the sets were sold out...even though their website says exactly how many they have. Truly misleading and deceptive. This place was a massive lifesaver for me when I was moving in to my apartment a few months ago. It had everything I needed that I was missing and more. Probably. But try, JUST try to get anything close to the knowledge and friendly help at HD that comes with the territory at McGuckins. Those green vests actually mean something. This might be my favorite store to spend time in anywhere. It's got everything and then some. I've found everyone there friendly, helpful and truly interested in their job. I worked in a hardware store all thru high school in a blue collar town on the East Coast. The place was family owned and the employees probably averaged 65 in age. But they knew their stuff - from plumbing to hardware to automotive to paint to home goods. It was a walking hardware encyclopedia. I learned a ton from just hanging around listening to these great, authentic people. McGuckins reminds me a lot of that place. It's a dying breed - the locally owned business that cares and takes care of its employees. If you want to pay the absolute least for stuff, buy it online. If you want cheap and know exactly what you need, go to the big box stores. To call this a hardware store is kind of an understatement. They have a ton of stuff! There's not just hardware but also lawn and garden, hiking and outdoor gear and even a small selection of personal care items like shampoo and insect repellent. Prices on most things were reasonable but I thought their Clorox wipes were overpriced compared to Target. Maybe get your cleaning supplies at Target instead. I went to this store for 50 3/8" stainless nuts and 50 lock washers and they presented me with a bill for nearly 75 dollars! Screw that! I refused to pay and they refunded the money to our commercial account and I walked out. I WILL NOT be back! They tried to claim that it was caused by increased shipping costs, which is total BS. Do they buy the nuts individually and pay 50 cents each for shipping? This company has been going downhill fast ever since they sold out to a different supplier and this was the last straw as far as I'm concerned. I bought the identical 50 nuts and a 100-pack of the lock washers from Amazon for 21 bucks, total, delivered to my door the next day. read more

My husband went in over the weekend to get a key replacement for his Toyota. Unfortunately he did not have the vehicle with him so it could not be programmed at the time so they told him to come back another day. They kindly held the key for him for an entire week! He's a little forgetful so he had forgotten that he had ordered the key. They called and I was able to take it over and they were very helpful took care of us and the key works great. read more

Dear McGuckin's, I have patronized over the decades and it pains me to leave a bad review... Sadly, my last experience​ left me thinking it might be time to move on. I purchased a "not so cheap" can of spray paint in hopes of matching a large metal piece at home. I sprayed a small dab for test color compatibility and it fell short of the cap color. When I tried to return it, I was asked if I had used it? I was honest, telling them I had tested a color match. Checkout​ had to​ call the paint department and a long humiliating wait ensued​. When an employee of the paint department eventually arrived, I was told the can was unreturnable, no store credit, no exchange, end of the ​story... On another​ side-note​: On the same day, my friend returned​ several items he recently purchased in hardware. Although he had a detailed receipt​​ he was told he would have to take his returns back to the hardware department so they could be individually identified and processed as returned. It turned out to be a ridiculous time-consuming​ process. The employee who checked him out was so confused by all of the ​returned items listed from hardware, he missed​ crediting several items owed to my friend. read more

I moved to Boulder 4 years ago and quickly fell in love with this store. By far the best hardware store I've ever been to, and I've lived in all corners of the US, including Hawai'i. When family comes to visit, they always want to hit McGuckin's and get lost in the hallways. They've got something for everything you can think of from random tools to fun gardening items. Their prices are usually equal to or slightly greater than Home Depot, but that doesn't bother me. I'd Much rather give my money to McGuckin's and help keep this great store in business. DONT ORDER ONLINE HERE. inefficient system and horrible customer service. This is by far the worst experience I have ever had with ordering online. I placed an order about a week ago for a $30 floating tube and paid $10 for shipping. I NEVER got a shipping confirmation nor a tracking ID. I called the store when my credit card was charged. They had no idea what happened to the order. Someone from USPS came to pick it up apparently. They couldn't even provide me the shipping info. I emailed the store and asked for a tracking number. NOTHING. NO RESPONSE. NO CONFIRMATION. NO TRACKING NUMBER. A week later, I called and was told that the item was shipped a day after I ordered. I never received the package. I didn't even know that it was arriving to even expect or to look out for it. USPS said they were not responsible. McGuckin absolutely denied all accountability. Yes, they understood that their system was inefficient. And yes, they understood it was their fault for not sending me shipping info. But no, they would not do anything about it. It's not in their policy to send a tracking number?? Horrible customer service. I could have ordered through Amazon, but this is what I get for SUPPORTING LOCAL. Losing a new customer because 1) they're inefficient and 2) they have horrible customer service. It sounds like a poor business practice to me. Don't order online here. Find another business that has its shit together because these people clearly don't. Just want to share so you don't make the same mistake I did. I'm so sad. This must fall into the top 10 hardware stores in America. It's big but easy to navigate - as long as you know your way around Boulder - the aisles are not numbered. The aisles follow the Boulder street grid. More than anything, McGuckin's has everything you need and much more that you want. It is staffed with people who know their part of the store (garden, tools, houseware, etc.). If they don't know, they will tell you or refer you to someone who might know. Why anyone would shop at Home Depot when you have this store in the center of town is a mystery to me. read more

Both of the copies were defective and would not open my locks. The first one they replaced with care.
