While I simply love the selection of unique wood at Front Range, and I have continued to do business with them over the past few years with each trip I have become more and more concerned about where their business has gone since the ownership change. Over the past 18 months their pricing has become simply unfair. I stopped by the store today to see what new selections they had. They recently received a shipment of used wood poles from a mine in Blackhawk. There were hundreds of these roughly 4" diameter poles, from 3 foot to 7 foot long. I wanted to purchase two of them for a project I have. When I went to check out I was told they were not for sale yet. Obviously I asked why and when they would be ready, and what the price would be. At first I was told the price for 6 foot pole would be about $100. OK, that was a bit much but I was ok with that. He then stepped away to call the owner to ask what the pricing should be. Of all the times we've been to the store this is the first day the owner was not actually in the store. When the guy cam back he told me the price for the 6 foot pole would be $450. That calculated out to be about $6.00 per inch. I wanted two poles but honestly, I'm not sure who would entertain the thought of paying $900 for two 6 foot by 4 inch poles that were covered in mud. I passed on the poles. Other things that have seemed to creep up over the past year or so on pricing... I typically purchase barn wood bundles that are 3" wide, milled on one side with the other side being weathered. Even though these are already milled and bundled and have a lot of areas that are not usable they still add on a milling charge. For this single bundle of 20 square foot they added on $50 more. When you ask about the price of the pre-bundled wood, in this case it was $140, they never mention the fact that the price is actually $190. It simply shows up on the receipt. While I have found great outlets for reclaimed barn wood and such online I do like the fact that Front Range allows me to see the wood and take it home that day as opposed to waiting three days for something to be shipped to me. The price gouging has become a tipping point for me, especially after the pole pricing. I have several more examples of where this business has made frustrating turns over the past two years but I'm sure you get the gist from the ones I've provided in this update. For consistent, repeat customers there should be some kind of consideration on the upcharges. Today's trip will most likely be my last trip read more

Round one: First time I went in I had a very pleasant experience with Jessica. She was very helpful, really took the time to listen and understand what I as looking for and showed me quite a few ideas/slabs of wood that I could use. Since I was not ready to buy at that time, she said come back another day. We have this area and this area to the side and around back that you are always more than welcome to dig around and find exactly what you are needing. Round two: Excited to bring my husband back to dig around and find what I have been waiting for. Ryan ( I believe was his name) did not seem too interested in my measly little sale that he would have gotten from me. Explained what I was wanting to do and what I think was looking for and he just pointed out a few things. I finally asked if I could go outside to look and pointed to the first area. Nope-we don't let people look in there. Ok, how about the other area? Go ahead. So, trek out there and start looking at the different piles. He comes out after a while and as I am looking at a pile of wood, he says, Oh-that pile is reserved. So I look at another pile. Oh-that one is not available either. So, the only pile that I am allowed to look at, I asked for a piece of wood. It would not have been hard to get to and he had just told another couple he would be more than happy to help them with the forklift if they found what they needed. We asked to see the wood and with attitude, we are told, he does not have the staff there to get any wood down and he's too busy doing other things (I guess the other couple's sale was more important). Well then, never mind. He could not have made it anymore obvious that he was not interested in my business, not only in his attitude towards us the entire time but the very rude comments he made on our way out. If he wasn't interested in my measly sale, he certainly guranteed never getting it by his remarks. I have seen their work on the internet and was excited to start using them to get more and more projects done around my house. Looks like I will just have to use someone else. read more

Great selection of reclaimed wood! Decided to do a DIY accent wall in our basement. We went in on a Saturday afternoon and they helped us lay out the wall on the showroom floor. The best experience I never expected to have. We didn't just pick up a plank of wood for a mantle. We picked up a 6ft maple plank that had been milled by the power of horses around 1880. Straight from Melvin the Mennonite, on a farm in Ohio. All of that knowledge for a slab of wood is unheard of. He showed us all of his treasures and let us pick our own piece. It made the experience that much better. To get to dig for your own and have that "AH HA!" moment was THE BEST! Last week I went to Front Range Timber needing 25 sq ft of barn wood for a table I'm making. I met the owner who was a great guy. He was pleasant and told me where I could find what I was looking for. After I selected what I need he came out added everything up and gave me a price of $7.00 per sq ft, which was great. It was a very pleasant esperience. Today I went back needing another 12 sq ft to finish my project. My second visit was unfortunately less than pleasant. A younger guy, was manning the store. He offered little help when I told him what I was looking for. I selected the wood I needed from the same pile as the first time and took it in to pay. When he rang my order up it was higher than I expected so I asked what I was being charged. He said $9.20 a sq ft. I mentioned I payed $7.00 originally. I told him I had the receipt in my car and went out to get it. Unfortunately, I had taken my wallet and card out and left them on the counter, which was obviously not smart on my part. When I came back in he had already run my card for the higher amount. I told him I wasn't paying the higher price. He pulled up his records and verified I had paid $7.00 a sq ft, but still refused to honer the price. His response was... "the owner can do whatever he wants to do". I said..."so you're not going to honor the price"? He simply said "Nope". He had to credit back the amount to my card, which he should not have run anyway. The name on the new receipt was Luke so I'm assuming he is the person who help me. Luke was very rude and needs a serious lesson in customer service. I live in Brighton and was willing to drive the 40 minutes because of my first pleasant experience. Unfortunately I'll be buying my wood elsewhere from now on. read more

We've had a 5 and 3-star experience with these guys so a 4 seems fair. The selection is pretty good and the prices are reasonable... but the customer service is hit and miss. You either great help, or a cocky impromptu stand-up routine, depending on who's working that day. That said, they seem to have the best selection in town and if you hear about some Kentucky Tabaco Barn wood in stock, run, don't walk.
