This is an old-timey hardware store, with a vast, even bewildering, variety of goods. They are out of the way for me so I don't go there often, but I use them for things I can't find anywhere else, such as specialized cleaning products. They have an army of green-vested associates who are always happy to help you find what you need. This place is the bomb! Coming from and Orange and Blue Big Box world, the GREEN in McGuckin's is very refreshing! I heard people come into Boulder JUST to go here! I did not, but I figured I'd check it out while I was in town. I was looking for an extra large chest hasp to latch my cornhole boards together for transportation. I picked up a cheapie at the Orange store but wanted to see what McGuckin's had available. They did not have an "adjustable" hasp, which I do see online(quite pricey too), but they had a wider variety of hasps in different sizes and finishes. The first person I spoke to wasn't sure what I was looking for, but directed me to a person who knew exactly what I wanted, and where it was located! Always a plus! We've lived in many different parts of the country, and McGuckin is by far the best, and most interesting, hardware store there is. First, the customer service is uniformly outstanding. Whenever I've asked a green vest where something is, they drop what they're doing, take me there, and help me find the right one of whatever I'm looking for. Second, they seem to carry everything. Example -- I went in the other day looking for a replacement for a small plastic strap buckle. I had low expectations -- of course I had been to my local HD and no joy. I joked with my wife that McGuckin probably had a whole aisle of these things. Guess what -- they do! I once came up with the idea of buying my daughter a lava lamp while I was in the store, just for fun. I asked a green vest, again not expecting to hit paydirt, and she took me to a display with about twenty different models! As a person who recently moved to Boulder and now works in the area, I have been told by everyone that McGuckins is the best and only place to go for hardware and other project items. It is not. They open at 8am, too late for any real contractor or handyman to go for supplies in the mornings before a job. Prices are SKY HIGH and why would I spend $25 dollars for something that Amazon has same item at fraction of the cost?? SAME ITEM I'm told it's the service that's important. Yes, until 25+ people come to you and ask you if you need something when each time, you have said 'no'. HomeDepot is right down the road and will have my business. I wish I grew up in Boulder, then I could have memories of my father dragging me along to McGuckins... It is that kind of place. Everything, just like Pearl Street mall, is perfect and in its place.... The workers seem happy and everyone is dying to help you out... Actually, almost fighting over you. The other day I went there to pick up seat belt webbing. They had like seven different colors and was the best selection that I had landed on besides the Internet. (I am going to weave my dinner table seats with the webbing... so it looks like I live in a Dwell house.) I got my humidifier here off of a recommendation of one of the employees... Which cost me a whopping $100, but if you live in Colorado, you understand the need. A trip back to Boulder is never complete without a visit to McGuckin Hardware. It's not quite like ACE or The Home Depot because it simply is just McGuckins. I came several times years ago when I was in school in Boulder, so this place holds a lot of nostalgia. McGuckin got itself a new customer today. I live a bit outside of Boulder so I rarely would go there. Always have been a Home Depot guy. However HD doesn't carry the furnace air filter sizes I need anymore so I went to Lowe's. Again, they don't carry. Was in Boulder so thought I'd try McGuckin. And what do you know?? They carry them. If that wasn't good enough, I wondered over to the patio furniture section and was looking at fire pits. A gentleman named Andrew came over to help. I didn't ask, he came over and asked if I needed a hand. Old school customer service ensued. He went over and above in helping me today. This is the worst hardware store I have ever been to. I went to buy seeds for my garden, and a shovel for my husband. The managerial staff was beyond rude and unhelpful. There was one lady who was extremely condescending and disrespectful. Not only were the managers hostile toward their customers, but they were also hostile toward their lower level employees. I walked in thinking McGuckin was a nice little family business, and left thinking they severely mistreated their employees. The girls who worked in the nursery were cute and nice though. read more

Went in to buy a humidifier, which they have an insane variety of, and ended up chatting with double-b Robb, son of Dave who has his own aisle (Aisle 1) in the store. Robb made absolutely no attempt to upsell us, and literally could not have been more helpful, taking no less than 20 minutes to walk us through the pros/cons of pretty much every model. He even took our merchandise to the aisle so that it'd be waiting for us when we checked out. Despite having a local feel to it, the store itself is massive, offering anything you might expect from a Home Depot or Lowe's. I have spent almost full nights in the paint isles trying to figure out that perfect, yet romantic shade of purple for your pad. Luckily, I did find the right shade after about two hours. Just being in the comforting womb of McGuckin's allowed me the proper concentration to realize that royal purple was not the choice for my bedroom, and instead, an alternately soft and baby purple was the way (though it was soon covered with an accidental night's work of sloppy navy blue graffiti : ) I have also found some of my most satisfying houseplants here, in addition to art supplies for the most arty art class and particle board to back my serious serious photo projects...Also, three sisters that I used to know when I was about five : ) read more

After waiting in a line of 30 people with 2 bags of hardware the cashier told me that having the prices and quantity on the bags was not good enough and they need a three letter code. There is nothing posted in the hardware isle about writing down codes. Back to hardware, writing down the three letter codes on the bags and an associate tells me that they might not accept them if I write them down and this isn't self serve! After waiting for him to write them with his own marker I'm waiting again in line of 30 more people to get the heck out of this store. This may be the best hardware store I've ever been to in my life! Absolutely loved it. It's big and has everything, including the classic hardware store smell (ahhhhh!), but what was really impressive was how friendly and helpful every employee was. Mcguckin Hardware is a Boulder landmark and my one and only hardware store. I've been going there since I was a baby. All of the aisles are named after the streets of Boulder with street signs. I always enjoy stopping by here but always spend far too long looking around and not actually getting to my list of things I need. It's in downtown boulder and on busy days, you might have trouble parking as there are other shops around using the same lot. They are also a Stihl dealer and has a good selection of power tools and accessories. *update* It is a family owned and operated business that is part of the Ace co-op so you can use your Ace rewards number there as well as Ace money off vouchers. Who could have known that finding a nut could be so fun? Obviously this place is fantastic, has always been one of my favorite places in Boulder. They have everything!!!! Including a fabulous sock selection. My wife and I recently purchased matching socks and we are thrilled with them. Anyhow, what this review is really about is Steve in the nut aisle. First of all he was very helpful in finding the right nut. We accidentally bought the wrong one first and came back in to get the correct one. I left Boulder six years ago and there has been many places in the city that I've missed. Perhaps the place I've yearned for the most was McGuckin. I've since lived in Portland, Southern Oregon, Minnesota, and South Florida and have had trouble finding any independently owned hardware stores, let alone ones with the service and expertise that I found at McGukin. My dad used to flip houses as a hobby, so I distinctly remember coming here often while growing up, and even then being amazed at the wonders these aisles hold. McGuckin's has everything and more, and every staff member I've encountered knows everything and more. My husband and I have been in routinely as we set up our new house and have had questions expertly answered ranging from best epoxy for a broken lamp, to appropriate tool to fit a screw that seriously only exists in our house. Someone is always around to help you, and there's none of that "I'm not sure, I'll have to ask someone else business." McGuckin's goes well beyond a Home Depot or Lowe's in knowledge and variety of items available. In addition to outfitting the yard, we also bought the super nice knives we've been wanting to add to our kitchen. I'm so obsessed with this place and the way its run, I've even put their book "Behind The Green Vest" on my reading list. This is one of those "let's just stop into McGuckin because it's a cool store to browse" type of place and you end up leaving $60 poorer even though you thought you didn't need anything from a "hardware store". It turns out you were wrong. It's basically a store with everything. In addition to hardware, they have pet supplies, art supplies, housewares, gardening gear, camping stuff, sporting goods, and more. They have hard to find canning supplies including the elusive BPA free jars/lids in a variety of interesting shapes/sizes. They have every kind of compostable bag you can think of (and here I thought BioBag only made trash bags....turns out they make sandwich bags, cling wrap, dog doo bags, and ziplock bags too). I think pricing at McGuckin got a tad more competitive since I went to school in Boulder. Back then it was kind of like "well, McGuckin probably has what you're looking for, but it's not cheap" and now prices seem to be comparable to pretty much anywhere. Or maybe it just seems that way because what you're buying at McGuckin is something you've never been able to find anywhere else. The employee to patron ratio rivals that of the apple store. What a beautiful thing living down the street from McGuckins used to be ('used to' because I moved, not because McGuckins became any less awesome). On a dry day: "Oh man, the inside of my nose is peeling! I need humidity!' ::walks over to McGuckins and stands in the humidifier aisle for an hour without being bothered by any member of the staff:: While cooking, "Oh crap, I don't have a whisk!" ::walks over to McGuckins and is confronted by 39485 whisks:: When sad about not being allowed to have a pet in my apartment: "I wish I had a cat!" ::walks over to McGuckins and pets everyone's dogs - hey, it's better than nothing!:: Bored with a friend, "Hey, I know a game we can play!" ::walks over to McGuckins and asks the staff if they have animal balloons in 14 colors... they do... game is over and we lose:: (Whoever manages to think up something McGuckins doesn't have, wins!) McGuckins has everything. Literally. Try them. Yeah, the store is big and it's impossible to find anything on your own unless you've got hours to spare, but the friendly men and women with dog treats in their apron pockets are there to help you! Use their expertise! Which brings me to my final point - most places that have everything are NOT pleasant places in which to shop. WalMart... Target... SuperTarget... Kmart... Best Buy... they may have good deals but shopping at them just isn't a fun thing to do, you know? Nobody's like, 'Hey, I'm bored, you know what we should do? Go to SuperTarget!' But McGuckins is more than pleasant. It's even fun. You don't know what you're going to see when you turn the next corner. Lightbulbs? Skis? DVD-Rs? Fake ice sculptures? An entire greenhouse? And all the while the friendly staff wants nothing more than to help you, and they manage to do it without seeming like they're stalking you around the store. PRICE GOUGING DURING FLOOD! I've lived in Boulder since 1984 and have been a loyal of patron of McGuckins. Oh I've been tempted by the big new box store over there on Arapahoe and 29th, but I want to support my local business. Well during the epic flood of 2013, I went to McGuckins to pick-up some plastic basins and garbage cans for leaks in my roof and debris. I was shocked to see they had put new prices right over the previous prices, Plastic garbage can was now $33 without a lid, that would be $11 more. I checked under the new tag and can was originally priced at $23. Oh McGuckins, I'm so disappointed that you would price gouge people during such a trying time. MY 200th REVIEW ! How fitting, then, that I get to review a true family-owned institution in my hometown of Boulder, Colorado! I have always been able to depend on McGuck's (as my family calls it) for anything from last-minute gifts, to arts and crafts supplies, to home project supplies. The fun and knowledgeable employees in their trusty green vests are always available to help. Just because McGuckin's is locally-owned does not mean that they aren't a huge store, so you will definitely need the assistance of the Green Vests to help you negotiate their labyrinthine store. There are two ample parking areas, depending on which entrance you use, and their website is also pretty convenient for doing some of your shopping and prepping ahead of time, so you won't be as overwhelmed when you walk through the doors, veering off towards the pen area for some $30 space pen when all you truly came in for was a section of PVC pipe for your bathroom improvement project. I have huge love for a mom-and-pop locally-owned store that has lasted for so many years, even since the big ol' Home Depot has opened less than a mile away. Granted, I'm sure there are things HD carries that McGuckin's does not, and vice versa, so there's no doubt they each have their pluses and minuses, but I'd be willing to guess that McGuck's will fulfill just about every need and want. It's like a hardware/variety/miscellany paradise in there! read more

Is there anything you can't find at McGuckin? In a word, no. I like to go to this "hardware" store and ask for things that are in no way hardware related just to try and stump them. Like, "Excuse me sir, do you happen to have lava lamps?" And then the sales associate (by the way these people know where everything is in the place) will be like, 'Yes, ma'am, right this way." And then I'm stuck buying a lava lamp just because I tried to pull one over on this place. Besides stocking almost everything you could want, they'll also order something for you if by chance they don't carry it. And it's all at a reasonable price.
