We usually go a little further east on the Fax past Quebec for hardware service and materials. However, I had a lackluster experience on Saturday. I ask questions when I need help. K did not "Ace" the customer service vibe by a long shot. Not a good feel to be corrected impatiently. I needed help, after all. It appears others don't like their service at this True Value and I'd heard this since my first hardware trip in Denver about 14 years ago. I thought not long ago that the ownership had changed. After the previous day's experience, I was willing to try them out, regardless. Having a bike shop upstairs that I needed to visit was icing on the cake. It may be shouting into the void, but I want to share that True Value hooked me up with parts, advice/instructions, in a prompt encounter that made me feel heard and valued. This'll be my first hardware stop on the Krameria to Yosemite section of Colfax from now on. Thank you. 4.5 stars. read more

by far best hardware shop i've ever been too. Robbie helped me out with my car after my bolts on my battery got destroyed. He guessed the size on the first try and installed it for me. Not only did he get me what i wanted without any questions but went above and beyond to make sure i was taken care of. read more

Adriana did not simply help me find grass seed and potting soil. She spent a good 15 minutes helping me, too. She listened to me, answered my questions, and helped me choose the best low-cost seed for my lawn. She got me paper to line my trunk and carried bags of soil to my car! Adriana gave me advice and was friendly and helpful. She made a simple trip to the store enjoyable. You gotta love personalized service at a small box store--there's nothing like it! read more

I love the True value store on Colfax just East of Locust Street. You can always get help from someone that knows how to fix things. It is a small store but I can always find things there. It feels like an old fashioned hardware where you used to be able to get advice on purchasing the right item. This store is up to date but has great customer service. Jeff works in the back and knows how to fix things!! WE desperately need more hardware stores like this one!! read more

I'm writing to give a shout-out to True Value in Woonsocket on Cumberland Hill Road. There is nothing that you can't find there. Their customer service is beyond believable. There is usually someone available to help you find whatever you are looking for. And believe me, there's a lot to see. Do yourself a favor and you will be so happy you shopped there. Can't say enough good about this business! The ratings should go higher for this place! P. Tarmey Woonsocket, Ri read more

I have been a customer of this true value for 17 years. I appreciate their customer service, prices, and convenient location. This was not my experience last night. after a long day at work, I did arrive ten minutes before closing. I know that can be annoying. The two employees working have helped me several times in the past. I have found the man who was working the back to be knowledgeable, helpful, and a bit salty previously. However yesterday he was initially dismissive, perhaps because it was close to closing time. I became frustrated. He did return to help me and quickly found what I needed. He and I verified the price TWICE. I proceeded to check out with the woman at the register. I told her the quantity and price. She told me she knew they cost more. I told her the price again. Again she told me she knew they cost more. She rang me up and processed my credit card the price I had told her but continued to make comments. Within ten minutes I had been dismissed, accused of lying 4 times and finally accused of stealing by misrepresenting the price. Angry and hurt I pushed the bag away and said keep it I'm done. Upon leaving I turned back to see the two of them laughing at me. read more

I highly recommend going to True Value Hardware on Colfax. The have a great inventory of different tools, house hold items, and their customer service is great! The staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They have a glass & screen replacement service, as well as a wood cutting service in the back of the store too. They've helped me with numerous projects and are very cost-effective. For a few glass projects, I've told them what sizes I needed & for what purpose. They made recommendations about what type of glass I should get (tempered vs. regular, and what thickness). If it's tempered, they'll order the custom size for you and you can pick it up in ~1week. If it's regular, they will cut it in-store and you can pick it up same-day. For my wood projects, I've bought wood there or brought-in my own wood, told them the sized I needed, and they've cut it for me. Their prices are usually lower than most hardware stores. I highly recommend True Value Hardware on Colfax! P.S. I included pictures of a project they helped me with! I took two old wood doors and installed replacement glass inserts into each door. Unfortunately, the glass inserts were too narrow and so I had to have wood "filler" pieces cut to fill-in any gaps. The project required very small and particular cuts of wood. The shop had the right tools and knowledge to help me get the project done! Thank you! read more

Just went in to grab some screws . Ask the gentleman in back and he said "yes we have them" he then asked how many I needed I said I needed 16 clips. Grumpy old guy named Bob next to the sales guy I was conversing with responded with " we can't sell you those" I then asked why. He just walked away muttering some cuss words. Me and the other guy were left speechless after this guy just blew up. Bro your job isn't that stressful. I suggest you find something else cause your attitude is horrible. Go to Ace Hardware instead. They are way more friendly, have a wonderful selection of items and are reasonably priced. If you're needing a quick part in the area use True Value over Ace on the Fax. True Value always seems to have the part I need while Ace always seems to be out of whatever I need. Staff is always helpful, quick, and like I mentioned they typically have stock i hand while Ace does not. read more

What better way to prove how very uncool you are than by prefacing a Yelp review with a Monty Python reference. Oh, well, sometimes these things can't be avoided. Early this morning I was disappointed that it had not rained as they had predicted, thus forcing me to get my butt out of bed to get the sprinkler system going. We just bought the house and the first time we turned them on we noticed one wasn't working. So now I had to get up at the crack of dawn to replace it with one we had purchased the night before (that's another review). I started digging up the bad sprinkler, a RainBird Maxi-Paw, which is a big mother of a thing. The hole kept getting bigger and bigger, so I thought, okay, maybe I can just fix this one 'cause this is becoming a real bitch to dig out. So I fiddled with the nozzle and the springs and things and turned it on. Nope, not fixed, but at least now the whole area was flooded with water. So here it unfolds: Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Scene 3: ARTHUR: Old woman! DENNIS: Man! ARTHUR: Man. Sorry. What knight lives in that castle over there? DENNIS: I'm thirty-seven. ARTHUR: I-- what? DENNIS: I'm thirty-seven. I'm not old. ARTHUR: Well, I can't just call you 'Man'. DENNIS: Well, you could say 'Dennis'. ARTHUR: Well, I didn't know you were called 'Dennis'. DENNIS: Well, you didn't bother to find out, did you? ARTHUR: I did say 'sorry' about the 'old woman', but from the behind you looked-- DENNIS: What I object to is that you automatically treat me like an inferior! ARTHUR: Well, I am King! DENNIS: Oh, King, eh, very nice. And how d'you get that, eh? By exploiting the workers! By 'anging on to outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society. If there's ever going to be any progress with the-- WOMAN: Dennis, there's some lovely filth down here. Oh! How d'you do? And so you see they are on their knees, **collecting filth.** That was me, this morning, on my knees pulling mounds and mounds of mud out of my ever growing sprinkler hole. Finally, I found out that I needed a 1/2" male-male coupler to complete the project. I went to the closest store, my neighborhood True Value Hardware. It's a rather fun store to visit because the whole place has these cool creaky wood floors and it's a bit maze-like with narrow aisles that abruptly end or turn. It's fun, that is, until you actually need to find something. There are no people on the floor for customer service purposes at this store. Just running the registers. I found my coupler but then made the mistake of trying to find a screw I needed for another project. When finally I found someone to ask, he told me I needed a lag screw but quite obviously I needed a sheet metal screw. I asked also for a mending brace but he said, quite annoyed, "I have no idea." So, if you're covered with filth and this is the closest place to your house, just be prepared to wander and wander and wander until you can find what you need, 'cause nobody here is gonna help you. If only I had a friend with some coconuts, I could have at least galloped through the store, thus entertaining myself as I searched for my Holy Grail: a 3/4" #6 sheet metal screw. They don't accept checks. I don't know who writes checks at the hardware store anymore, but just in case you're the last one, maybe you'd like to know. read more

I took a screen in to get fixed. When I got there, the handle was hanging off. I was asked if that was already like this and after stating no, was asked to come back the next day. Ok accidents happen. However, when I called the next day, the customer service person cut me off mid sentence as I let her know I was returning the call. Then I was placed on hold to speak with the person in back. He was also pretty short. Two things: 1. If you break something while doing repairs offer some kind of apology for the inconvenience. 2. Even if you are busy it is no excuse for poor customer service. Cutting a person off mid sentence when they are trying to explain the reason for their call or for just being short with them is simply unacceptable. I will not be returning to this location. read more

I've dealt with this store since 1995 and was concerned when Big Box Lowes came in. That said, they have found their niche, generally have a knowledgeable staff willing to help, and their Sthil small engine shop is great and well stocked with commonly needed parts. Today I called to have 3 Schlage Door handles and Deadbolts re-keyed, and evidently there is only one guy who can do that and he's off until Saturday. What happened to Management 101, where you have a backup trained when you're off??? Lost out and disappointed. read more

This is a great neighborhood hardware store for sure. The staff were friendly and helpful, the store was well organized and, as others have commented, the space is really full of all manner of hardware items. I needed 4 6/32 screws and wing nuts. I was quite pleased to find a whole wall full of small drawers with all sorts of nuts, bolts, screws and washers... sold individually. See, I didn't need a small box with 20 of each. Total bill: one buck. This is the kind of store I like to do business with: close, friendly, reasonable. As I was leaving, a staff member and I got to talking about another small project I'm planning and he referred me to a glass supply store that specialized in the material I'd need. What a resource! read more

It's expensive but that's the price you pay for neighborhood convenience and I can live with that. What's surprising is how unfriendly the staff is. It borders on downright angry. I shop there when I have to or when I feel like being treated poorly. Meaning I shop there when I have to. read more

I'm my experience, this location has really declined in service over the last year or so. Seems to coincide with newer hires. I would highly recommend Ace on the fax just a mile or so east instead. These days, some True Value employees seem to take the costumer for granted, failing to understand the impact they have, one way or the other, on the costumer's opinion of the store. I've been left hanging on the phone with questions. They acknowledged later they forgot to come back after checking on an item. Stopped in even more recently early morning on a weekend. The only costumer in store and two employees chatting at the registers. They didn't even glance at me, let alone say anything and I spent the next 30 minutes finding everything I needed - no offer of help. The lack of personal attentiveness undermines the point of a more expensive (than the big box stores) local business. Ace on the Fax is the exact opposite experience every time. Go there. read more

I enjoy going to smaller hardware stores as I think they typically have more knowledgeable staff. I went in today with some yellow grass spot concerns and was immediately taken care of. The guy that helped me seemed very knowledgeable about my issue and what I needed to do/get in order to fix it. They're also my go to place for getting household items (lightbulbs, paint, etc.) and keys copied as they are always helpful and ready. read more

This place is great. It's not in my neighborhood, but it's worth the drive. They carry things you can't find a big box or an Ace Hardware. For one thing, they're carrying a couple of different lines of organic seeds, with varieties you can't find just anywhere. Another example would be items in the quantity you want. This includes bulk screws and nails. They also sell things like hardware cloth by the foot. No need to buy a 60 foot roll when all you need is seven feet. They seem to be good at special order items. I ordered one item on a Sunday and it came in four days later. read more

This store used to be just a few blocks from us, but even now that it's across town I keep coming back. Variety - 5 Customer service - 5+ The fact that there's a bike store upstairs - 5++ They have the offerings of a fancy home and garden store (no VOC paint, organic seeds, bright colored gardening supplies) without the expensive prices. The staff is beyond helpful and has done some troubleshooting for us on more than one occasion. Seriously, I could spend hours in there ogling the well curated selection of goods. read more

The big box stores only do straight cuts -.-. I just needed a small round cut that would take someone with a saw 2 minutes to do. Sure enough they were able to do it for me. It cost me $2.50. So glad I found this place. I tried to do it myself with what I had at home... the hole is slightly misshapen because of me, the cut could have been prettier had I known about this place sooner. My bunnies and me are now happy campers now that they have there own private space to do their business (uploaded photo of my happy bunny after my little project was complete). read more

Whether you agree with the mask rules for retailers or not, that's the requirement right now. I walked into this store and an employee without a mask asked me what I was looking for. I mentioned he was supposed to have a mask on and his complete non-acknowledgment and indifference was astounding. I spoke with the store manager who said he would talk to him. No apologies...nothing! I try to support local (even franchised) businesses but it's Home Depot for now on. At least they care enough to try and comply. Don't get your knifes sharpened here. Could take two weeks and the staff could care less. The ONLY benefit of a small shop like this is customer service. My experience has demonstrated they don't care, are unwilling to properly manage their outsource partners and seem lazy. So, the real difference with these guys and a big box store is they have less selection. Too bad, I'd prefer the spend money with small local stores. But when attitude and customer service are equal, I'll choose selection and lower price. read more

I've lived in the neighborhood 14 years now and find this store indispensable. To be sure, you can often get better pricing at The Home Depot, but you won't come anywhere near the creaking-hardwood-floor atmosphere and the determined help offered by the ever attentive staff. Just the other day I was buying a custom-length chain, and the staff person helping me cut it one length too short and wound up giving it to me for free. Truthfully, I was buying three other sections, but still his generosity is representative of the spirit of this store. To boot, I'm an avid bicyclist and the upstair bike shop provides excellent mechanical service for less than the specialty shops...and it's in an old timey hardware store. Cool. This store is as much of a museum as a retail outlet and is worth a visit purely for the ambience. read more

Wow. I don't think I can match the entertainment of Carrie's search for the Holy Grail of hardware store screws, but I can tell you this, if you're in Park Hill, this is one of two nearby hardware stores. It has by far the biggest selection. The other is Fairfax hardware, just a few blocks down the Fax (that's actually my favorite, though not as big a selection.) There are many people that work here at True Value, but depending upon the day, the hour, the position of the sun, the cloud cover, the soil conditions, your attire, etc...is the factor of whether or not you can actually find one of the minions that actually know something. It's hit or miss. Sometimes you feel you've scored like you're a playa in Vegas, and sometimes you feel like you'll never find a missing coupler and your life is over. So, if you want gloves or a shovel, you'll save money by heading out Quebec and visiting Home Despot. However, if you want to support your local hardware store and pay $5 more for the same glove, come here. It's quaint, labrynth-like, filled to gills, and far more entertaining than Home Depot could ever be. They do have most things you would look for, and there's definitely a neighborhood feel. You can go in muddy, grubby, and cranky, and no one would think the worst of you for it. read more

I have been a customer of this store for over 37 years. (some of my earliest memories are of this store, shopping with my Dad.) This is one of the FEW remaining hardware stores not devoured by the evil amoeba-like 'home depot' or 'Lowe's'. A genuine gem of a store, if you need it done 'old school' this is your store. You can get glass cut for a broken window, pipe cut for that gas line upgrade, screens re-screened or even get keys cut.. They have bulk screws, nails, bolts, etc. so you can buy one or 13 and not be hemmed into a pkg you will never use all of, or lose before you need them next. The garden center is awesome every year, I got a German heirloom tomato this year. Will is your man to ask if you are not sure what you need or how to do it. He's one of those rare 'Hank Hill' guys who has fixed it all, knows exactly what you need, and how to tell you how to do it... (This is the rare part!!) The staff here are so welcoming and helpful. It is actually enjoyable to go to this store, and I never thought I would say that about a hardware store. The owner/manager should recognize the guys who work the cash register for their friendliness and Sarah (with short hair), the expert always willing to share detailed and thoughtful advice. This is simply a great store. They have things you just won't find other places. They have a staff of people who can actually give you useful information, not just read from the back of the box ... as anyone can do. But the best part is the atmosphere.
