If you love the thrill of searching for a deal, you'll love this place. Need a drill, pulley, safety glasses, socket set, old rake or antique pulley? You'll find it here. After reading about Charlie's the fella and I popped in to take a "quick look". We were there for over an hour and left because they closed. We wound up with a matt cutter, gun cleaning patches and an antique pulley. Everything was priced pretty cheap and the staff was fantastic. They told us a bit about the store and talked us through something specific I was looking for. I would absolutely go back to find some more treasures. read more

Best store in Denver, all the people who have given less than a 5star review of this place are bitter, have no appreciation for anything, are disrespectful, ungrateful, rude, and just can't live without getting on Yelp and complaining about God if the weather man said cloudy with no rain and it was cloudy but sprinkled for 5 min. Wake up and smell the 2nd hand tools! Loved this place. Went in looking for a garden fork and loping shears. Look was what I did after being pointed in the general direction. It's packed with 2nd hand tool goodness. Prices are not it was a steal cheap, certainly reasonable. Peeps are as chill as the vibe. Awesome. I found it and a few quality 2nd hand implements. Zero stars clearly isn't an option so 1-1. I've been here twice with tools I've used a handful of times and BOTH times turned away without so much as a "Have a nice day." You insulted me when you didn't make me an offer at all. I would never recommend this store to anyone. You're better off staying at home and trying your luck with eBay. Store is very cluttered with very old tools. I'm not surprised they can't afford new tools. read more

we were in the store for about ten minutes before I decided I MUST get my husband a Charlie's t-shirt. The place may look disorganized at first glance, but items of the same kind are grouped together and the staff know exactly where everything is. Most tools are organized by type and manufacturer. Craftsman here, Yankee drivers there, Klein in the next bin, etc. Great selection of old hand drills. Plenty of other odds and ends, from doorknobs to leather tooling stamps. There's a hidden corner of books and manuals, from old Chiltons to the manual for your bread machine. Downstairs there are more tools and a small selection of knickknacks if you're looking for shiny things. Plenty of items in the store would be used for "farmhouse" decor or a conceptual art project. I have a feeling we will return here each time we visit Denver. read more

Ok check it the only way I know about this place is because of Scott's review, once I read it I stuck this place in my back pocket IE bookmarked the bad boy! So I roll a Honda because aka they are super reliable and get good gas mileage well lately the little B, has been breaking down on me. So after dropping so serious yelping money on fixing her, I decided with the last repair (starter) I was doing myself! Well I am a geek and have been building PC since like 1995 yeah I wish I would of realized at that point 5k invested in Microsoft would make me a rich arse geek today! So I figure since working on PC's is easy for me etc I can fix a car, well low and behold my tool box gets about as much play as that Atari 2600 sitting on the top shelf in the garage. I have sockets but no ratchet. Bam, back pocket opens up I pull up my bookmark and here is where my journey to Charlie's Second Hand Tools comes to fruition! I pull up at 4:40 and he closes at 4:50 which I think is cool fight the power and the 8-5 hours! I walk into this place and its like a tinker shop full of tools every where! I know there's is a precise madness into how he organizes this place but its like a treasure hunt finding your particular needed gadget! I find my ratchet and make my way to the counter and like a grocery store grabbing screw drives some steel brush and some safety glasses might as well go all in. This place has just about every tool you could need, so if you need a tool and want to save a little money on it stop in pick up a used one because they have more character! Plus I cant get over the image in my head that these guys are building a bunch of machines in the backroom that are incredibly intricate to perform simple tasks! Ala Wallace and Gromitt! These guys are great! I was closing out an estate and there were tons of tools I didn't know what to do with. Steve came out to look at everything, made an offer to take all of the tools! If you're like us and needing a bunch of random tools for your new house, this is the place to go! They have just about everything you need, and the know-how to help you pick out the best tools. The best part is that sometimes they suggested the brands or stores, even if that didn't help them. Great, honest guys. Prices that are way better than buying new. Best tool shop ever. Been going since I was just a kid and Madden was doing ace commercials. Charlie's was the place back then and still is now thank heaven. This place is a trip. They made a spot and provided a chair (pail) for me to sit on to look through the machinist tools. Looks like they provide some community service with tool kits at a decent price for some guys trying to on their feet as well. Had some fun conversation. Staff treated my wife and I very well. I'm basing my 4-out-5 on fuzzy memories from an impulse visit (was walking or driving by, saw the sign) _years_ago_, but I'm about to drop in again, so if this review needs updating after today's visit, I'll do that. My fuzzy memories say that it was fairly disorganized and I had the impression that browsing wasn't really encouraged - the proprietor would rather tell you where to find whatever you're looking for. Given the neighborhood's history, a somewhat cautious and suspicious demeanor is, I suppose, somewhat understandable. [aside: I've noticed I am treated very differently by store workers - whether a small business owner or a flunky in a big-box chain store - depending on whether I am dressed sharply or shabbily] And I recall prices being fair, but not remarkable - I've seen better in pawn shops and flea markets, but I dislike buying from those places for various ethical reasons. At least if Charlie's buys a tool from someone, used, they're buy it outright, they're not an overprice "loan shark" operation. So even if Charlie's had higher than going prices, I'd still shop there because A) how many used tool-only stores are there in this area anyway? I believe in supporting local and small business first! -- B) you can put your hands on something before you buy it, unlike eBay, and I buy and sell on eBay plenty - it has its place. That said, my fuzzy memories further inform me that he had damned near everything most folks -- professional or hobbyist -- could want, and a dozen of most. I remember buying _something_ small, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it was - a spark lighter maybe, cold chisel, hand masonry star drill, drift punch... something like that. I already know they haven't got in stock what I'm really wanting to buy today, because I called a day or two ago and asked. But I've got the time to go down during business hours (for a change) and I want to put a face and a card to my name for them to watch for the thing I'm looking to buy and give me a call, if they're willing, when one comes in... and who knows; perhaps I'll see something I've been wanting for ages at just the right price... read more

I'm a woman but I'm not stupid. Went in here with a friend to pick up tools purchased 6 months ago. The man was rude from the get-go and explained that he had sold one of the tools already. No problem with that that, it is understandable that he needed to get it moved. But he refused to refund the money for the tool that he sold twice. When we had inquired about it we were rudely brushed off and were talked to like we were 5 years old. I would have appreciated a conversation as opposed to whatever that was. Charlie's has a great selection of pre-owned tools and great prices, friendly staff. The selection changes often as people either are selling or upgrading their tools. I recommend Charlie's if you're looking for a great deal, much better than Craigslist or a pawn shop and more reliable quality vs a thrift store. read more

If you get sick of buying as many new tools as I do, knowing dang well that as soon as you lose the receipt for the new one the old tool will come home saying it was just under the pile of ... you left from the last unfinished job several weeks ago, Then GO TO CHARLIE'S 2ND HAND TOOLS! They have everything that humans have ever made to fix anything ever in this amazing shop on Larimer St, (one of the last cool blocks that hasn't turned into a loft megaplex) Ron and Steve are waay cool guys who speak plainly, know what you mean, and "yep, we got that" is the favorite phrase you'll hear in there. I stop in just to show people and say hi whenever I can, and will always give them my money first. The prices are more than fair, they are downright cheap! Not much to say. If you need it, chances are they have it. If they don't have what you are looking for, you'll probably walk out with something you like just as much. The prices are fair, and I could spend hours walking around---there is so much to look through that you have to walk around a few times. I'm obviously not saying anything new from the previous reviews, as we have all dropped 5 stars, but seriously, this place kicks ass, I will never go to home depot for any type of hardware again. I roll in, need 5 nails, and the guy offeres me 5 nails for free or the whole box for a buck. I have no idea how they stay in business considering how affordable the prices are, but if you need hardware, go here, there the best in downtown. read more

Tool stores like this are few and far between. So far at Charlie's I've found 2 vintage Lufkin tape measures with sewn leather cases that retract via a hand crank, an old hand-cranked bench grinder cast in Pittsburgh by real steel workers 100 years ago, a half dozen sturdy metal tool boxes made from 20ga. steel for under $20 each, an Estwing planishing hammer from the 60's, the best sheet metal snips I've ever owned, as well as dozens of rare and hard to find tools from the best makers of the past century. You just can't do better than this place. read more

This is absolutely, by far, thee best tool store I have ever been to! It's like walking around the Emerald City of Oz, or the Land of Milk and Honey, or Shangri-La. The prices are less than what you would pay at Harbor Freight, but the quality is age old American gold standard. I go here almost every week and the inventory changes every time. Even if you don't need a tool, stop by this place just to check it out and chop it up with Steve, the third generation family owner. So happy I found this place and I hope you find it too! read more

This little gem of a used tool store has practically every tool you could ever NOT find somewhere else. And I speak from experience. I found specialty chisels that I couldn't even special order from Sears or Tool King. When you find the tool, on the shelf, and you can't even get other stores to order that tool, well, that speaks volumes. I know I know, there are probably tools they don't have but other stores do. I don't know what tool that would be, but it is possible. Remember, this IS a second hand tool store, so none of the tools are new. But the clerks know their business, and have the layout of the store pretty well in mind, so they can quickly help you find the tool you want. It is probably best if you know something about tools so you can decide what in their selection is best for you, but the employees are honest and will tell you what they think about the condition of the tool you select. They have pretty much everything I could think to ask for, and if you are starting a project and don't have all the tools, well, stop by and see what they can help you with. From shovels and tape measures to heavy cutting torches, they have a store crammed full of useful man-toys. read more

We recently asked Charlie's to come out and bid on the contents of our disaster of a basement and garage. Steve and his crew were efficient, prompt, and courteous. The moving crew worked diligently through 90 degree temperatures and completed the task in less than 8 hours. By the time they left, both areas were so clean they needed only a quick sweeping. I recommend this business for anyone needing clutter management or estate liquidation. read more

I've been a fan of Ron & his brother for 20 years. Since moving to Denver from Cincy where this type of old school enterprise is the norm. I have to laugh at the remark from the gent mentioning the clerks here "know their stuff." Ron & his Bro aren't the clerks. This is a family business inherited from their father which if I remember right, their Dad bought the real estate and building housing Charlie's back in the '40s. That's the 1940s. None of these comments are an exaggeration. It's a major kick to visit these guys & a bonus when you score the exact "whatever" you're after. Real serious fixer uppers & pros of all sorts won't always have the same success finding a very specialized, odd, rare, or simply uncommon tool - since we've been building our home/pro workshops for years. Decades probably, since we were teens. Myself, I try to remember to check with Charlies first before buying new. Good tools simply never break and are good for generations. Charlie's excells at replacing a missing piece from a set. And please know that when you buy a "used" very high quality hand tool that is guaranteed for life by the manufacturer - that "used" tool has the manufacturer's forever warranty. At some smal fraction of the cost of a new replacement piece. If you are a (normal, not like guys & gals that love tools) person who has very few tools and you need mostly high quality and very, very affordable tools - holler at these guys to see if they have it (or 100 of it) and recycle these assets. Gardening, painting, whatever. Don't forget to bring a quarter for the parking meters downtown. But, then again - don't sweat this detail because Ron will give you a quarter! No kidding. If this sounds like an advertisement, well it is. From an old & familiar customer. I'd love to see these guys work this business until they decide not to.
