I was on a quest for a new exterior door for the back of our house. Easy, right? Well, not so much. Affordably anyway! The home improvement store that sounds like Shome Fepot wanted over $250. (They don't sell just the door. They have the casing with them.) I drove to all the non-profit stores selling used building materials. Squat. Between Yelp and Google, I discovered Extra. The majority of their products are actually new and boy, the warehouse is chock full of all types of building materials! I worked with Cheryl who was so helpful! Armed with tape measures, we scoured through their vast inventory until wala! A door the exact size I needed was found. They pulled it and loaded that heavy thing in my Jeep. It was solid and weighty!! The cost? $40!! (happy dance) So next time you have that home project, head over to Extra and save some bucks!

    Extra Extra!

Developments are popping up in Denver, like acne pops up an a young adolescent boy's lip, and when contractors buy one to two hundred more kitchen and bathroom cabinets than they needed, they sell them to Extra Build, who in tern sells them to us, the hungry public. Extra Build is the place to come if you can claim that you are thrifty and sporadic enough to pick out our kitchen, bathroom or living room cabinets at the time you encounter the item. The stock may or may not come as a complete set and there are no more colors in the back. What you see is what they got and is what you get.... (fewww, try saying that one fast). The benefit of course, is brand new cabinetry sometimes 90% off. Things are not cheap here, but most of the items are brand new and in great if not perfect shape... don't come in here expecting layout ideas or combination examples, this is certainly no IKEA. This is a haven for flippers and or a great way to spruce up many different rooms in your house for a fraction of the budget. Great finds include bathroom sink pedestals, TV and living room cabinetry, and amazing interior and exterior doors, including screen and sliding doors for every room of the house. You can also be creative here and just go here to pick up goodies for artsy projects that may or may not have anything to do with your home, apartment or flip. About four months ago, I was on a mission for a way to make my own jewelry box. I was looking for a long wooden box that I could hang on the wall, cover the interior with velvet and screw nails into the wood so I could store my necklaces and earrings in it and feel like a princess when I opened it. Well, I definitely found what I was looking for, but I could never bare to spend the usual $75-100 fee for the wood itself. So, I guess I just went to kind of tease myself and see if I could find a screaming deal. That is where this place looses a star. Another project that you could do here is a mirror. You can find tons of wood scraps here, as well as framed wood or window-frames (glass free). Take a mirror of the same size, place it behind the frame and screw the wood together if necessary or attach it to the mirror. This will cost you hundreds less then what it would to purchase new, and takes less then an hour to make yourself. (I was going on a TLC rampage there.) * Star one is for being a gem in the industrial district off of I-25 ** Our happy star number two is for supplying the developers and contractors a safe place to make even more money and spare the landfills by dropping off their extras *** Mister Star three (Let's call him CocoaMo) is for providing a Green Resource: a place to find the "don't wants" of housing materials in perfect rehab-able shape **** Meet star number four, he is awarded to Extra Build for their huge selection and friendly young staff Poor star number five was stripped from the winner's circle because of Extra Build's sometimes high prices.... Regardless of how much they used to be.... It still seems expensive to me. (I wanted to end on a rhyme... now I just screwed it up).

    Thermatru Front Door $200.

Very well organized, fair prices, and I like that they have a loading dock right at the storefront so that you can get loaded up in NO time

I haven't felt this at-home since Thanksgiving '98 when Grandpa and I road a tandem bicycle to Olive Garden and filled our bellies to the brim with bottomless salad and breadsticks! (He's passed away now - gluten allergy) When walking into the store, you may shed a tear, because at this Ace hardware, you're family. The kind staff and I always hold hands as I browse about the store...and NO it's NOT because they're concerned for my safety!! Stop being silly, ya silly goose...Maybe a wrench, maybe some rock salt, heck maybe even just a random bottle of hot sauce...the options are endless! They have everything, at very reasonable city prices. Once I've satisfied my nearly insatiable craving for browsing the aisles of doorknobs and extension chord, I check out, exchanging a knowing smirk with the cashier...and on my way home I KNOW I'll sleep better tonight..:because "Like a good neighbor, Ace Hardware is there"!

I had to go inside. Helpful staff inside when searching for things. Always helpful and pleasant staff. The holiday items are out early. I like that. The smell of wood brings me back. And the buckets. Unfortunately, the experience I had with one of the employees, Mathew, was extremely disappointing and unprofessional. After asking for assistance to get a refrigerator down from a shelf, Mathew arrived looking irritated from the moment he showed up. While I was speaking with a very kind older woman in the appliance department and asking her opinion on the various mini fridges, I could visibly see Mathew growing more impatient by the minute. In an effort to move things along, I asked him to retrieve a smaller fridge from the middle shelf. When he brought it down, I noticed it had a puncture and expressed concern that it might be damaged. Rather than acknowledging my concern, he ignored me and instead repeated what I said to the other employee. When I asked if he was planning to get a different one for me, he became even more irritated. I ultimately told him "never mind" because his attitude was becoming frustrating -- to which he replied, loud enough for both of us to hear, that he didn't "give a [expletive]." I immediately reported the incident to the supervisor on duty, who told me they would pass it along to the manager on Monday. However, based on the interaction, I'm not confident it was ever escalated. I'm a veteran, and I've always believed in treating others with respect -- and being treated the same in return. The lack of professionalism, respect, and basic customer service I experienced from this young employee was unacceptable. If someone doesn't want to interact with customers, they shouldn't be in a customer-facing role. I left without making a purchase and went to a different store where the staff treated me like my business actually mattered. I've shopped here before, but after this experience, I won't be returning.

The parking lot is calm. The aisles? Breezy. The Garden Center? THRIVING. Birds practically singing in surround sound. Garden crew? Absolute sunshine. Helpful. Smiling. Ready to make my yard the envy of my neighborhood, as it should be. And can we talk about Amy at the register? Queen behavior. That woman was moving like she had somewhere fabulous to be. Clearing out winter nonsense, scanning like a pro, offering help like she was on commission for kindness. I leave my cart with her thinking, "Yes ma'am, hold my treasures while I grab a rug and live my best life." Now here's where the tulips wilt. I head to get a rug cut. Crickets. Not a soul in sight. No orange aprons. No wandering associates. Just me and my increasingly dramatic inner monologue. Fine. Washer/dryer section. I find a sweet girl just vibing. Bless her heart, she pages someone overhead. We wait. And wait. And WAIT. Twenty minutes later, the only thing that showed up was my irritation. I go searching again. A security guard does the classic "I do not see you." Matt at paint? Smiles politely and then executes a professional eye-avert. The washer/dryer girl? Vanished into the retail abyss. A new associate appears.....glaring at her current customer like they personally offended her ancestors. I try. I circle. I wander. Fifteen more minutes. Alas. No rug. No help. Just unmet potential. So here's the tea: Garden Center = 10/10, springtime magic. Amy at checkout = MVP, give her a raise. Rug cutting situation = a mystery worthy of its own investigation series. I left disappointed , not mad, just that specific kind of retail heartbreak where you know it could've been a five-star moment. What has happened since my last 5 ?? Do better, my beloved Home Depot. Spring waits for no one.
