At Ace on 9th, you walk in 2 yards to be greeted by a knowledgeable guy asking whatcha looking for, then he shows where it is. It has been said that good things come to those who wait...But that saying is stupid, and clearly needs to be modified, to say "Good things come to those who visit Ace Hardware on 9th".. I haven't felt this at-home since Thanksgiving '98 when Grandpa and I road a tandem bicycle to Olive Garden and filled our bellies to the brim with bottomless salad and breadsticks! (He's passed away now - gluten allergy) When walking into the store, you may shed a tear, because at this Ace hardware, you're family. The kind staff and I always hold hands as I browse about the store...and NO it's NOT because they're concerned for my safety!! Stop being silly, ya silly goose...Maybe a wrench, maybe some rock salt, heck maybe even just a random bottle of hot sauce...the options are endless! They have everything, at very reasonable city prices. Whoever bough 9th Avenue Ace and 12 Avenue Ace has ruined what were to decent local stores. Toke out old products like nail bins replaced with mega boxes of nails in limited sizes discontinued products and replaced with cheaper product for more money. The clerks that where knowlegable are gone replaced with younger clerks who have no modivation, do excersizes at check out counter, took 3 people to return an item and repurchase of same item in different size. If you need help, they could care less excluding one new older woman on 12th Street that was great. I will now go to Holly Street Ace which is further. But called them today and they had the same item (which was discontinued at 9th and 12th Street Ace's) and offered to order in additional quantity I needed to finish a job. Great job for Ace on S. Holly items were there when I went to pick up. read more

Shop here all the time since it's just two blocks away. They have friendly staff and a fairly impressive variety of inventory. It's a little more expensive than Home Depot on some items, but you can't beat the convenience. The locksmith service is great too, I've used them several times! read more

I really hate writing a negative review for establishments, especially ones that I frequent and overall like, but the behavior I just witnessed was gross and so un-empathetic, that needs accountability. Overall, I really like this place, but today when the employees allowed an unhoused woman use the restroom (thankfully after she left they did this disgusting and dehumanizing act) but the older heavier set white man who works there took the bathroom key that was attached to a pipe or cylindrical long object (assuming to make it more inconvenient to accidentally take or to steal), and he got the attention of the younger employee, who looked late teens, early 20's wearing mostly black today, and showed himself cleaning off the cylindrical object with hand sanitizer, smirking and making comments suggesting it was dirty because she used it in a shaming way towards her, but trying to be funny and the young man said back yea, you don't know where she may have put that, suggesting she used it in a sexual way. They both said this at the front of the store by the registers in front of customers and laughing with a few of the male customers. This is absolutely atrocious behavior. If you're going to permit someone who is unhoused to use the restroom, which she waited at the front and asked politely to do so, you don't get to also shame her, belittle her and dehumanize her after. I saw her on the way out of the store and she was complaining to her friend that they thought she was being sketchy in there which I understand having policies for no public restrooms, but that was horrific to witness and such disgusting behavior. Also, you should be sanitizing that cylindrical rod every time it's in use by a customer or employee, that's just hygienic practice, but to emphasize cleaning it after she used it and making such lewd remarks about how she used it?! You both should be ashamed of yourselves. read more

This is my local hardware store. They also own the Ace at 12th and Clayton plus the A&A Tradin' Post in Englewood which dates back to 1955. You may have thought customer service was a thing of the past, but this is the place for it. I can generally find about 90% of the odd hardware and household repair items I need at this store and a friendly and knowledgeable staffer to help me and to provide advice. There are many neat things at this store, but one of my favorites is the huge selection of bolts, nuts, screws, and miscellaneous parts which are available individually sorted on trays in many different categories. You can actually handle the item to ensure it is correct and then purchase exactly the quantity that you need. There is also a good selection of paint and related materials, plumbing supplies, electrical supplies, garden supplies, hardware fittings, tools, and miscellaneous household items plus many other bits and pieces. If there's something you need to complete your project, it is probably here somewhere. The staff actually knows where everything is located, contrary to my experiences at a certain "big box" hardware store. The locksmith at this location is a separate business run by Eric Rhyner, who is exceptionally helpful. He is happy to provide on-site locksmith services in addition to the counter service provided at the store. read more

Great For Professionals & Novices This store feels like a throwback to fifty years ago, yet the staff and supplies are entirely contemporary. I like to pick up a few things here every now and then when I feel like pretending to be manly. I've broken more things than I have repaired, but I enjoyed trying. My household loves Ace. We can order on the app and pick up in store, so we know what we need will be in stock. The app or web site often give good pricing, too. And with our rewards card we get lots of coupons and discounts for our loyalty. The crew at this location is incredibly helpful. They have given us some great advice as we learn how to do some small home repairs ourselves. Customer service is what sets them apart from other stores. When we made a poor choice in paint colors for our home, two staff members took a lot of time to adjust our paint to a color that was closer to what we really wanted. And they did it at no extra cost. For that amazing customer service--above and beyond what they are expected to do--this Ace is our first choice. read more

And here's why I double loves me that 9th Ave Ace Hardware . . . so listen V E R Y C A R E F U L L Y 'cause this is extremely important: Going to 9th Ave. isn't like going to Home Despot when you want a single screw/washer/bolt/nut/fill-in-the-blank. At HD, you have to buy a pre-packaged, hard plastic containerized multi-unit minimum $2.95 version and get half dozen screws/washers/etc. But not at 9th Ave. you don't. At 9th Ave. you go in for a nut, so to speak, and you get yourself a nut, so to speak. One nut, not a package of 6+ nuts. Now that is old-fashioned genuine American hardwarin' customer service. They'll charge you the 18 cents and wish you a nice day . . . like good hardware folks should. read more

This Ace is made for Capitol Hill. Our neighborhood is full of old, old homes with strange fixtures and claw foot tubs and outlets that only have two prongs. Our neighborhood Ace Hardware is filled with all the, well hardware, to rectify or repair these situations. It's definitely no Home Depot (which I'm thankful for because I get claustrophobic in space that are too big - weird I know), but I've always been able to find anything I needed there. You can even get copies of your keys made there and random things like coffee makers or space heaters. It's always a surprise what sort of items they'll have for sale! And the people that work there are so knowledgeable and friendly. It makes me feel like humming the Mr. Rogers "These are the people in my neighborhood" song when I walk by. Locked out of your bathroom at 8 am and have to pee? The locksmith here will give you the info you need to buy the right tool to break in. Unable to attach your front license plate plate because the screws are frozen? This place will drag a drill out of the back for you and find a way to make it work. Seriously, this place has been amazingly helpful. I've never gotten such service from a Lowes or Home Depot. Great, convenient place, with awesome customer service. I made a quick Uber trip when our furniture was delivered but we realized our tools didn't make it to the new place. All I needed was a basic hammer and screwdriver and that's exactly what they sold me. I was looking at a 10 in 1 screwdriver and the salesman even told me that it was a little over the top for what I needed and showed me one that was 6 in one and half the price! I always wondered if this Ace location did well as it sits in the middle of Cap Hill. It turns out they do very well and provide wonderful customer service. I recently ventured in as I was in need of some screws that were missing from a chair I purchased. After speaking with the vendor, they offered a partial refund if I purchased the missing screws. I walked over paired only with the parts list and another screw the vendor said was the same diameter. I spoke with the staff and one of their employees helped me find the screw I needed for my hair. When we couldn't find it, he offered other solutions. It was a great experience and I appreciate the effort they took to help me! read more

I went to ace to find some things to work on house projects, during this time of covid 19 just trying to stay busy and do positive things while out of work, i bought paint and called back to ask about exchange policy, the man was so incredibly rude to me and talked down to me in a really agressive way ,i really couldnt believe it .i was was kind on the phone and just curious! i get that it's a stressful time but it was so off putting that i will never return to this location again. read more

I had the best experience in this Ace Hardware store yesterday and definitely felt compelled to write a review due to the customer service! I walked in about 30 minutes before closing time in need of some parts for an outdoor canopy that I recently purchased online and some bolts, washers, and nuts were missing so had to find replacements. Also, during the process of trying to put it together, a few metal grommets that place the screws in the metal poles were stripped out due to moving it. Even though they were getting ready to close soon, I was immediately greeted at the door and was able to explain what I was looking for by providing a few samples of the original parts. I didn't get the friendly guy's name who helped me (shame on me and I even checked receipt when I got home and nothing ) but he was top notch and so helpful! He took the bolts and matched them up to the correct replacement sizes and even showed me the similar cheaper options instead of up selling! He also showed me some epoxy 'welding' glue that would fix my stripped grommets and when I used it last night it worked perfectly! Ace Hardware may not always be the cheapest store but when it comes to customer service and having the parts you need, it's worth the extra money! Everybody here is super helpful and knowledgeable about their products as well as general handyman work. I come here at least a few times a month for various home improvement projects and the staff takes pride in their jobs and is always very helpful. Much better than Home Depot or Lowe's where nobody seems to know anything about their products and can definitely not give recommendations. read more

I like going to this Ace, because it makes me feel like I'm walking into a small town hardware store - where you feel like everything has its place, but you may not be entirely sure what the place is. That's part of the charm: the dusty stuff in the display case by the key cut station, random snacks hung on end caps, narrow aisles that make you feel like you're a kid and should be playing hide-and-seek instead of shopping. Yep, I like this place, especially their key duplicator - thank you x1000. Some of you may remember my hyperventilation scene from a few months ago, when I moved into my new place and discovered that I lost my most valuable keys: to the car, and my old apartment (which is only important because I hadn't moved out yet, and the place was still full of stuff.) Durrr. Car keys can sometimes be difficult to copy, so I am super appreciative that they made the duplicate and had me try my door, trunk and ignition before I had to pay for it. Thumbs up. You know what? This place looks wicked sketchy out front, but inside, they are the friendliest and most helpful people you'll find anywhere. I've been here a few times recently, once to buy wall topper to redo my extra bedroom and just today to buy some twine. Both times, the staff knew exactly what I was looking for and was able to direct me to not only the aisle, but to the shelf without hesitation. I love it because I can get pretty much anything that I'd need for construction while living in an apartment from this place and it's very nicely located right in the middle of my neighborhood. When I redid my extra room, the guy working was very helpful in pointing out tools I'd need, as well as helping me pick the appropriate topper from the 3 types they had. I recommend this place for sure, it's a good lesson in don't judge a book by it's cover :) read more

Kind of an awkward store with awkward (but well meaning) employees. Whenever we just need a hardware store type item or two, the Cap Hill Ace Hardware is much easier than a trip out to the 'burbs. Unfortunately, they don't have everything one needs and unless it's a super general item (ie garden house or light bulb), your time might be better spent at a big box. The seed starting section is far more limited than a garden store like Paulino's or a big box store like Home Depot. When we visited back in March we were looking for peet pellets to start seeds with and the awkward (but well meaning) employee informed us it was "too early in the season." To start seeds? No. So while friendly, I haven't found the employees to be terribly helpful. Oddly, their canning section is where it's at, always stocked with hard-to-find jar sizes, plastic lids, canning kits, etc. Apparently they consider canning "year-round" as we were able to purchase canning supplies in March but not seed starting supplies. We went last weekend and were able to find what we needed to with ease (keeping in mind that we were looking for pretty basic stuff). Ace does in a pinch, as long as you don't have a super tall order or need a variety of something. read more

So I was having a bug problem - sans screens, every living creature, including the neighborhood bats were roaming into the house at night. I looked online b/c I have NO knowledge about bugs, bats, gnats, whatever, and I just wanted all creatures inside - GONE. The guys were helpful. They had what I needed, and as I slept so peacefully with screens and human friendly powder scattered, I knew Ace was my go-to place for house stuff that men usually handle. They also had a potpourri of random good stuff - tiki torches, batteries, locks, lightbulbs, toilet paper - just total randomness. And at least 4 workers asked me if I needed help finding something while I browsed. Not that I looked confused... Love it love it - and it's right across the street from King Soopers so hit two spots while you're out and about. Errands have never been so easy. read more

This Ace is the place. It's the place where I can go to ponder all of the many "home improvement" tasks that I could undertake if I wasn't so incredibly lazy. I like to browse the plumbing and electrical section and just, you know, pretend that I know what ANY of those parts are actually for. When someone asks me if they can help, I respond with, "Oh, I'm just looking for a 3/4" phalanges sprocket mount." That's my code for, "Nope, just browsing, thanks." Most of the time I come here, I'm getting something trivial like electrical tape, extension cords, spare key or nails. I use a lot of nails for some reason. But my guess is that they have a little bit of everything for any type of project. The staff is all super friendly and VERY helpful and, while it seem like it's a little on the pricey side compared to, say, Walmart, I still go here because I can walk to it and it's a business immersed in my community. The customer service at the Ace stores, is really stand out. This goes across all of their stores. I have always had excellent help and customer service, at every Ace store I have visited. They hire people that care about doing a good job. Did I mention that Ace stores have free popcorn? What a great throwback to a bygone time. Prices are affordable, and they have lots of sales. They've helped me pry old license plates off my car in the rain; they knew which brackets I needed to make little spice shelves; they can duplicate keys; they loved on my dog; they sell spray paint. They freaking love projects. You can see their eyes light up when you come in looking perplexed, which I prefer to the Home Depot tactic of seeing that look on a woman's face and running the other way. Are they the cheapest place in the city? Well, no. Do they have everything you'll need for whatever kind of terrifying living-space drama you're going through? Absolutely. Thank you, friendly Ace staff, for not trying to sell me the most expensive power drill in your store! This smaller Ace makes me feel less clueless than walking into some big-box Home Depot. They also carry pet care products, which is nice for not making two home-related trips. I've never had an issue finding street parking here, and I once dared to park at King Soopers and jet in. I want to like our neighborhood Ace, I really do. I like the idea of trying to support the "neighborhood businesses" instead of the big box stores... and heck, they're only two blocks from me... but the place just rubs me the wrong way when I go there. Some employees are very friendly and happy to help. They even encourage us to bring our doggy in to get cookies. They aren't super knowledgeable, but they try. More on this later. Some of the employees are NOT friendly AT ALL. My personal favorite is the blond girl who usually is too busy talking about how hung over she is from the night before with her co-worker(s) to notice me or even stop to ask if I need something. And if you DARE to interrupt to ask for help, you get the "I didn't come here to WORK" look from hell. At this point, I use the Ace when I know EXACTLY what I want, have a fairly high degree of certainty that they'll carry it and I just zip in and out of. DO NOT ask them for help or expect great selection... One time I was in there looking for a replacement socket for a florescent starter. The employees looked at me like I was from Mars. I've also overheard them giving some really bad repair advice to folks AND not being able to answer some fairly basic questions about plumbing and electrical. And for whatever it's worth, I've tried other Ace's in the area and have NOT had similar issues. It seems to be just this location. read more

Well I can say that after 3.5 years of numerous in and out visits to this location I am a big fan. They have helped me with "insert name here" for our Victorian House in Capital Hill. Every time I walk in I am greeted and they know exactly where the most odd trinkits in their store are. I'd rather support local than box when I can. Tiny Ace location compared to some of the other locations for this company. Still it keeps to the basics and they have pretty much anything you need, they always helped me get what I needed for batteries, lawn care and such. They can help you when you need something quick minus all of the frilly home decor places I have been to. read more

The neighborhood store that feels so small for an appropriate costumer service. It is sad to say that I'm taking my business elsewhere because it will mean quality costumer service. I just brought a paint that I bought there the last day of September because it was solid and the cashiers just shrugged and mentioned that the cause was that my basement was too cold and it messed with it. I have all of the left over paints in my basement, the ones that I have bought from Home Depot and after years of having them in there I can easily access them and never experienced any problems with it. It is not only the fact that I had to buy another paint, it was the feeling of not even an interest to figure it out with me. I didn't feel like there was an interest to even try to fix it, just to sell me something else. read more

Local and neighborhood friendly. This is the go to when looking to avoid the big box stores. This place is customer service focused and have enough employees to answer questions. If you're looking to fix something, or starting a home project give these guys a shot first. I've been in several times for everything form keys being cut to glue to hanging hardware and I've always been helped quickly and been given prompt service. The store is a bit small so it's possible they won't have 100 of everything, but so far I have been able to find what I need. It's nice being able to ask someone for help and have them direct me exactly to where I need to look or give me the parts necessary to complete my projects. Parking can be a lil hard, but no worries to walk a few steps if needed. read more
