Where else to go but to a pub! We arrived at 6:40 in the evening and seated ourselves as is the custom. While many of the tables are hightops, we chose a regular table off to the side. First was an appetizer of Curried Chips along with NA Guinness to wash it down. The chips were like mashed potatoes in the center and crispy on the outside. Along with the authentic curry to dip them in, it was deliciousness on a plate. On to the main dishes. Companion ordered Bangers and Mash. Excellent tasting sausages served over mashed potatoes in traditional style. Companion loved it but was unable to finish it. For myself, I had my Fish and Chips that I was craving. 2 large pieces of cod perfectly fried in a beer batter coating. Served over a pile of perfect chips and accompanied by malt vinegar I was back in the U.K. Only problem was that it was served with a side of English peas instead of mushy peas like one would get overseas, but one can't be too choosy. Of course, we had to have dessert. There is always room for dessert! Companion ordered Toffee Pudding with Hot Custard sauce and I ordered the Bread Pudding. The toffee was chewy and sticky as it should be and the hot custard sauce added just the right touch. My bread pudding was in dense slices as is proper in the U.K.. I stole some of companions Hot Custard to put on it and it was wonderful. This was an excellent dinner which brought back memories of pubs in the U.K. The only thing missing off the menu was a Ploughman's Lunch, but not enough people would order it I think. So disappointed. I have been going here for years for the Fish and Chips. I was so craving it and since it was my cheat day, this was devastating. (dramatic, I know). The coleslaw was disgusting. I almost threw up. The waitress told me with a beaming smirk, she "loves our coleslaw." I handed it to her and said "try it". She declined. Since I was craving the CHIPS part of the meal (finally some carbs), I was horrified (drama again) to find my fries were cold and severely floppy. No crispiness what so ever. Why do we not have more English dining establishments in the Valley of the Sun? And I don't mean so-called American Pubs or wannabes! After visiting London, we've become enamored with Brit cuisine and its hominess! Not long ago we visited London and were astonished at the culinary diversity available in that cosmopolitan monster of a city! Almost every country in the world's cuisine is represented. Whether Indian or Moroccan, Spanish or Jamaican, you're going to find it there! But traditional British gastronomy is often neglected, in the past it may have had reason to be, and it has been given a bad rap over time. And I don't tend to agree with that overtly misleading philosophy. Every country in the world has its comfort food, and Britain has some of the most magnificent interpretations of their own and we're lucky to have George & Dragon an English Pub in the Valley. Not only do they offer exceptional facsimiles of the traditional like Fish and Chips, Cornish Pasties, Bangers and Mash, English Curry dishes and Shepard's Pie, but offer very well-prepared American Standards such as Burgers, Sandwiches, Salads, Tenders, Chili, Wings and more. If you've ever had the pleasure of eating real homemade English terroir farmed eats in the UK, you'll appreciate that it's not as good. Not to blame establishments or cooks in the U.S., our overly processed foods just don't stand up taste wise. Yet under those conditions, George & Dragon do an exceptional job with our poorer ingredients. We stopped in recently for a rendition of their Full English Breakfast with all the trimmings of Banger, English Bacon and Baled Beans, Sauteed Mushrooms, Grilled Tomato and two eggs any way you like them... terrific! Kudos to the Wimberley's and cooks for their bringing not just the great food across the pond, but the aesthetics of a real old English pub to the Valley - it reminded us of the ones we visited in London. We grabbed seats at the bar, and Kat took great care of us--friendly, attentive, and welcoming from the moment we arrived. After another long day of work the following night, we found ourselves looking for a late dinner. Since this was one of the few places with a kitchen still open after 10 p.m., we decided to come back--and we're glad we did. The beer was ice cold, the food was delicious, and the service was just as great as our first visit. The menu has everything you'd hope to find at a proper British pub, with plenty of classic pub favorites. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. They also have a large patio with misters to keep things comfortable, pool tables, and lots of TVs, perfect for watching the upcoming World Cup matches. I was really looking forward to having dinner at George and Dragon last week. So disappointed in the food. With the owners being from England I would have expected better English food. Two of us had the Shepards Pie and it was almost inedible. There was no sauce with the ground beef and the mashed potatoes were dry and flavorless. There were also large chunks of potato in the mash. They also charge an extra dollar for cheese. WTH, it's supposed to have melted cheese on top. Why charge for it? Petty. The restaurant ambiance looked more like a dive bar than the many English pubs I've been in. To the owners, do better. Won't be wasting my time and money coming back. read more

Huge shout out to Brittany for making my experience as perfect as it was. I walked in off the streets and as a dark beer drinker, I wanted something other than Guinness. She recommended Founders Porter and it was perfect. Thick, creamy and smooth. There's a good amount of lunch specials, but I asked what she recommended and she went with the Shepherd's Pie. It's a generous size for lunch and very filling. It comes with a flavorful gravy that goes nicely with the entire meal. I ordered a hot custard at the end of my meal and it was one of the best custards I've ever had. It was made fresh, not served too hot, thick, smooth, not too sweet. Restaurant is pretty big; they did a great job utilizing the space and not overcrowding the tables. There's a gaming area with pool and darts as well. read more

Awful place. Wouldn't let me in to watch the World Cup because I was by myself. I showed up nearly an hour before the game. After being told they were "at capacity" they allowed in another 50 people because they had "friends waiting for them." Security guard was extremely rude and confrontational for no reason. read more

But George and Dragon's short crust pastry stuffed with chicken curry and potatoes are my new go to satisfy that craving. He bartenders last night, Cat and Jana were welcoming with playful banter. I stopped by George & Dragon recently and had one of the best service experiences I've had in a long time. Our server, Sara, was incredible from start to finish. She was friendly, attentive without hovering, and had great recommendations that totally hit the mark. What really stood out was how genuine she was--she checked on us at the perfect moments, made sure everything came out right, and somehow managed to juggle a busy room while still making us feel like a priority. Been here a handful of times but the last two times I've gotten the fish and chips and it never disappoints. I was hesitant today to order this because of the negative reviews about "bones" in the fish and the coleslaw making one "feel like they would vomit" but it was solid. Two HUGE pieces of fish, fries and I opted for coleslaw. The coleslaw isn't my favorite but I'm picky about this I like a tangy coleslaw this one was very mild and creamy. Lauren, the bartender, was attentive and genuinely friendly. My only complaint is I was vibing to Luscious Jackson's "Naked Eye" and it was stopped mid song for some metal otherwise 10/10! read more

We love this local bar and it is a must visit whenever we are in the area. They have some of the best fish and chips and a great draft beer selection. They have some fun bar games and there is a lot of space to hang out and talk with friends. Their patio area in the front is a little small and loud, but the inside more than makes up for it. read more

First things first, GO ENGLAND!!! I love that they are doing watch parties for the Euros and throughly enjoyed the watch party July 6th, and looking forward to enjoying the finals this Sunday! Jolene provided amazing service and even checked in on the status of my food when it took awhile (ticket was lost). Though the menu is limited for watch parties, the English Breakfast was spot on. I love that they didn't even bat an eye to make it vegetarian, and even inquired if I was vegan. Outside of watch parties, this location is on my radar to try again as I haven't visited since COVID. My Nanny (grandma from England) always loved this pub when we were on that side of town, so this place has lots of nostalgia for me. One of the best pubs outside of England! read more

When I used to spend a lot of time in the valley back in the mid 1990s, I came to George and Dragon because it was featured in the best of Phoenix one year. While living out of state, I saw it featured on one of the Rescue shows, so after moving back here full-time in 2019, I decided to put it on my list of places to check out again. The restaurant is still located in the same building that it was back in the mid 90s, and surprisingly, I didn't notice much change since my last visit. During my last visit in the mid 90s, my colleague got the shepherds pie and I got the fish and chips. I decided to get the fish and chips again this visit. I must confess that my memory is not good enough to remember exactly what the fish and chips were like in the mid 90s, but I can tell you that this time they did not live up to my expectations. The cod fillet was definitely premium quality and a sizable portion for a lunch portion. It was batter dipped, possibly with a beer batter, but I'm not certain. In any case it was an excellent compliment to the cod. The unfortunate fact is that both mine and my wife's fillets were overcooked. The battered exterior was a dark golden brown, and my wife's fillet was dry and tough around the edges. While the batter on my fillet tasted somewhat burnt, the fillet inside was still moist and tender. The chips were basically steak fries, and were properly cooked although they seemed tough to my wife. One of the big mistakes they make is placing the fillet directly on top of the chips. I understand, elevating it so that the bottom of the fillet batter stays crispy however, all of the fries under it were soaked in the oil from the fillet making them soggy and unappetizing. The lunch fish and chips only comes with one side, and we both chose coleslaw. The other choices were limited such as peas or another vegetable. You could choose a salad for an additional charge, but at $10.99 for the basic fish and chip lunch, that seemed a little too expensive. The coleslaw was nothing to brag about. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't great either. Lastly, I'll talk about the atmosphere. First of all parking was in the rear, with plenty of room. but it was about a 10 to 15 yard walk to the closest entrance. We entered through a side door, although we were not sure when we opened the door whether it led to the kitchen or the restaurant. It was not marked as an entrance but rather than walk another 20 yards around the building to the main entrance we decided to give it a try. The door led to a section of the pub where there were a couple of pool tables. After walking through that section, we were greeted by a server who offered to seat us. There were only about a half dozen other customers at the time, which is not surprising being that it was a weekday around 2 PM. Whenever my wife and I go to a restaurant we always prefer a booth with padded backs and seating surfaces. However, in the case of G & D, they only have bistro height tables with wooden back padded chairs. This is unlike what I recall from my visit in the 1990s where I think they had banquettes across the front - of course I could be wrong about that. We settled on a four top table along the front near where I sat on my last visit. We were greeted with menus and waters very quickly, and our order was taken within minutes. It was clear from the amount of time it took to get our food that everything is done fresh to order. In fact, they may not keep the fryer fully heated based on the amount of time it took. Due to my wife's fish being overcooked we sent it back, which resulted in another 20-ish minute wait. Fortunately, they left her the fries and coleslaw so she had something to keep her busy. Summing it all up we will probably will not bother returning here. My wife and I have both have spent weeks in London and honestly nothing really brought that London vibe to mind here at George and Dragon, other than maybe the fact that the food in both places is just so-so. read more

Took them 15 min to get waters at our table then we weren't seen again for AN HOUR. The tables next to us were all getting served, water, food, even got to their 3rd round of drinks and we still haven't even been asked for our order or our water refilled. We tried getting the servers attention 3 separate times and he just ignored us. So finally after an hour I asked what was going on and their response was "we're busy". Like no shit. But how are you being so attentive to the other tables but not ours? Service was trash. Server was a jerk. Food was trash. She had attitude, acted bothered, and did the bare minimum. They were out of the veggie pastie and a few other items and she just stated they were out instead of offering/suggesting alternatives. My dad swears this is one of the best place for fish in chips in the Phoenix area. Big huge pieces, with big heavy breading and a side of steak fries. This is my first time trying this place. If I wanted good desserts that are very tasty, I would pick this place. English Hot Custard(Like Byrd's Custard) is yummy. BlackBerry and Apple crumble very good! Sheppard's Pie is a overly seasoned/salty. They need to adjust the salt/seasoning. Gravy is good. My suggestion is to create an Indian curry style Sheppard's Pie. I'm looking forward to trying out other items on the menu. Tables are a little sticky sometimes and the bathrooms don't have infant changing tables (okay, I know, weird thing to desire, and maybe the babies aren't the clientele this pub is trying to attract), but service is friendly and there's plenty of beer to choose from. I keep hoping they'll decide to bring in some Doom Bar, but I haven't gotten lucky yet. Food is, well, British food. They make a solid Indian Chicken Curry with the perfect bite of spice. The Shepard's Pie was a little heavy on the potatoes for my taste, so I think I'll stick with the curry next time. Quaint British pub in Central Phoenix. My coworkers and I came on a Wednesday evening around 6/7pm. We were able to get a table for our party of 6-8 easily, despite a good section of the pub being reserved for poker night. The fish and chips came highly recommended and did not disappoint! The portion sizes are generous; I only ate half of the meal and was quite full. The fish was nice and crisp and I always enjoy a good thick fry. My coworkers had the Shephard's pie and it came out piping hot. They also took half of their meal as leftovers. Our party also had the halo burger, which captivated our interested with the cheese "halo." You must love cheese if you order it, because the cheese is the size of the plate!! I ordered a sticky toffee pudding to go and it was a miss for me. It was quite stodgy and a smidge burned. We could have used more toffee and it was closer to caramel. I went here with friends on a Sunday afternoon. When I first entered I smelled an off-putting smell that was sort of life fish. I wasn't sure how could tolerate it but I'm guessing my nose got use to it. We sat down and were waited on by a lovely upbeat waitress. She got our drinks promptly. I had a mimosa and my friends had beer. I'm ordered the chicken curry pasty and my friends ordered the wings with garlic and Parmesan. The pasty was flaky, and the chicken was tender with very good curry flavor. The wings, which we asked for cooked so as to be crispy were absolutely delicious. I am a big fan of fish and chips, it's my go-to whenever it's available. GAD does it right, perfectly cooked and all the sides delicious. Cole slaw doesn't usually impress me, it's normally very boring, but for some reason I couldn't get enough of theirs, had a little zip to it. My gf got the bangers and mash, and really liked that. I am not really into bars, but this place is so chill and had a very welcoming warm vibe. Staff is all very friendly and helpful. Bonus story: I left my debit card by accident after I paid for dinner. I had to go back the next day, so I ordered lunch before I headed over. I got the English Dip, but when I got home with it, I was sad to find they forgot to pack my Au Jus :( :( so ima have to dock that fifth star. read more
