A very average and overpriced meal. I kind of knew this would be the case after I learned Gaucho is a chain but I tried it anyways. On entry it's already a bad first impression. The interior and feel of this place is very dated. It looks straight out of the late 90's, early 2000's with stark color choices, no warmth to the space at all, and a general feel of wear and tear on everything; a few seconds is all it takes to start feeling some regret about your choices. Unfortunately the food confirms it. We tried some empanadas, both beef and the chicken+chorizo versions, and they were okay - I've had better almost everywhere. But the steak was the real let down. I chose the specialty cut of the ancho (Rib Eye) and while it look pretty tasty, the texture was good, and the temp was perfectly medium rare, there was almost no flavor at all to the meat. Chimichurri sauce did not help it nor did the name "Ancho" which suggests there is going to be some bold flavors kicking out of this steak. To be fair, British beef has been very underwhelming in general so the locals clearly need to start from a disadvantage but as many cuisines and chefs have demonstrated there is a lot you can do with an otherwise lower quality piece of meat - none of that knowledge is demonstrated here. Dinner last night here was splendid. The view of the river while sitting under the tree canopy with the delicious meal and amazing wine - this place was the great choice. For the Argentinian restaurant the steaks were grilled unevenly. While we ordered all medium rare, the meat came out some parts were medium and some more rare. The steaks had the same thickness throughout - perhaps their grill is not emitting heat properly? But that was a bit disappointing from a steakhouse Dinner for five was under £500 read more

We made a reservation for 6:30 on Saturday night. We arrived there a bit early (a little after 6) but the hostess was very nice and was able to seat us outside right away. It was such a nice day and night we really liked the outside seating. We ordered the ribeye and sirlion for our entrees. Both of our steaks were cooked to perfection! It was cooked medium well and was very nice and juciy. The seasoning and flavor was on point! I thought I wouldn't be able to finish it but it was so good, I probably could have eaten a bit more! For the sides we chose chips, spinach, and mixed green salad. The salad was fine and it is not anything fancy. The chips could have been cooked a bit longer so it wasn't as crunchy as we would prefer. The spinach was a nice and healthy side item. It was steamed and garnished with lemon and garlic which I like better then sauted spinach. We loved our experience and plan to return again! read more

A few of us came here back in October for brunch which works out about £60 per head. The drinks were lovely and great because you definitely are able to get your money's worth. The food was average. We were served a tiny chorizo sausage in a hard bun. Tiny bits of steak with no egg. All the bread was rock hard and even though it says TOAST, you're getting bread. It doesn't matter. Hardly any flavour to the food. But I really liked the atmosphere and our servers were really nice and willing to go above and beyond for us if we had any problems. read more

BAD day at work and its Friday night - ugh! Definitely need a pick-me-up, gonna treat myself to a nice dinner and plenty of wine. Have had my eye on this place for awhile but have been kept away due to my price-phobia. Sat outside (by MYSELF) under the terrace of trees looking out onto the water. Being outside yet sheltered by all trees - what a creative concept! Ordered a glass of wine and the empanadas for starters. Perfect restaurant, perfect steak, perfect service, perfect atmosphere you see, I really love that place. Just 10 mins walking distance from either office or apartment, this restaurant is definitely my favourite in Canary Wharf. The setting just by the river is beautiful, the interior is very stylish, I even love the music! The service is outstanding and the steak, believe me, it's fantastic. So are the sides. The rating I am giving is solely based on the service. Last time I attempted to go there (after not going for a while because the customer service was very questionable) pretty much makes me believe the people at the front desk have NO CLUE what they are doing. We got a reservation for 9PM, and arrived on time. We were told it would be about 15 mins for a table. Ok, fine, we went to the bar. Three cocktails and over an hour 15mins later we were STILL waiting at the bar. I had gone to speak to the manager at the desk twice during this time, and she kept repeating that they would have table shortly and that no, I couldn't have one of the 8 empty tables for two that were available. Apparently the staff wouldn't be able to cope if they put us there. Right. Whatever. So basically they made us wait for over an hour, with no apology. Sitting on that bar stool looking at those empty tables wasn't enjoyable...and I have yet to actually understand why they didn't sit us there. Completely useless hostess basically. I am really disappointed, this isn't a cheap restaurant, their customer service needs improvement, and FAST. read more

Great steaks, great wine selection. I had the pin wheeled Filet, called Churrasco di Lomo. It was amazing!! I'm from Chicago and know steaks very well, this was on par with any of the high end Chicago steaks. Maybe a little less tender, but the flavor was excellent. WHAT HAPPENED!??!? I came back to London and my first dining stop was, to get my favorite hamburger IN THE WORLD. And instead, what was served to me? Something revolting, awful! I have previously been able to forgive the gaudy decoration and extreme prices because of the pure worry-obliterating joy of their burger, but that's all gone now. Gone is the delicious bread, replaced with a normal (read: crumbly, buttery, messy) steakhouse bun; gone is the delicious meat, replaced with... meh; gone is the prosciutto garnish, replaced with soggy, chewy streaky bacon; gone is the delicious cheese, replaced with a flavorless hunk of... meh; gone is the delicious fresh tomato sauce, replaced with a combination of sweet mustard, spaghetti sauce, and "fresh" tomatoes. The only thing that got it two stars was the friendly, smiling service (at a different location, I admit, than the one being reviewed. But they all share the same cuisine) and the pound knocked off the price of the burger, presumably because £17 was a ludicrous price for the current product. So is £16. I can only imagine that the burger was so good that it was poaching steak customers. No need to worry about that anymore. I won't be going back. This place is dead to me. R.I.P. read more

I work close to the Westferry Circus Gaucho's whichoverlooks the River Thames, Gaucho's is always a reliable place to enjoy good steak. Portion sizes are huge, be prepared to enter a meat-coma after feasting on the Argentinean steak (to be honest you should only come here for the steak, I've tried other options and always regretted it - not that the food was bad, but the steak is far superior) There is always an enthusiastic sommelier at hand to help you decide on a suitable wine to accompany your meal (be warned, they can be quite convincing about their astronomically priced wines, £40-£200) I have a particularly bad sweet tooth and the Dulce de leche tart certainly hits the spot. It is rather expensive (around £18-£90 depending on your weight choice) but certainly worth a visit. Though it is a chain and i tend to find chains can get rather boring rather quickly, it's one i don't mind revisiting if not for the steak, then for a good glass of red wine or the tasteful leather/ cow hyde patterned decor, makes you forget work and revisit Argentina for a little while. read more

Came here for dinner with friends for a birthday celebration. Don't know why certain reviews were bad with regards to service, but for our table the service was quite good (we were a big group, maybe that's why)! Our waitress remembered all of our orders and served us without double-checking with us. We liked the recommended wine (Fabre Montmayou Malbec), it was quite smooth (but if you have different opinions, I'd like to say that we aren't wine connoisseur's so we were quite satisfied with it!) I recommend the tapa ancho (rib-eye) medium-rare (300g), bife de chorizo (sirloin) medium rare (300g) or pork matambre medium (I'm a fan of the Malbec mustard) for mains. As for sides, the sweet potato chips (w/ chorizo) were quite good! There weren't a lot of chorizo though. The spinach (side) was the Chinese stir-fry type with a dollop of lemon juice - quite good, but honestly I can make it myself. The oyster mushrooms (side) were satisfactory. I liked the hostesses here, they were well-dressed for their job. In comparison with other restaurants I've been, I was quite impressed. I liked that they asked if we were in Gaucho for an occasion, because we were! In the end, they surprised the birthday girl with a slice of chocolate cake with ice-cream on-top which was so intensely chocolatey and so decadent. I also liked that the waitress brought the different types of steak over in order to assist us with making an order. Although I am not a beef-eater (my friends were) I appreciated the explanation. Our glasses were consistently filled, which showed how attentive the waitress was. She also recommended daily specials for the ceviche and dessert although we didn't order any of those. The tiny downside of this entire dining experience was the dark interior. There were candles on the table, and wall lights but they were so dimly-lit it was a good thing we had our dinner early while the sun was still shining brightly outside. It was a bit warm inside (even though they do have centralised AC it was switched-off at that time). Maybe it's a classy thing to eat in a dimly-lit environment, but it was something that I felt like I am still getting used to. Who doesn't love this place? I'm hoping to have my birthday here this year. This place, I too believe is very 'Sex and the City.' During the day it's filled with business lunchers and in the evenings it's filled with people who appreciate a good, hearty Argentine Steak. The atmosphere here is buzzing, Gaucho is almost always busy and if you're going in the evening be sure to book. Me and my partner ate between us a selection of Empanada's each, a selection of cuts of beef for two, with asparagus, spinach, a peppercorn and mushroom sauce and a nice bottle of wine. For desert we had two great whopping slices of Dulce de Leche cheesecake, this cheese cake is out of this world, simply mind blowing, rich, decadent and just the way any true sweet toothed person would love it. Along with the cheese cake we had two Dulce de Leche's each just to round it off nicely. We managed to conjure up a one hundred and thirty pound bill, don't let this scare you, me and my partner are notorious for our excessive eating! Nevertheless the prices at Gaucho are not for the faint hearted, but the food is worth the thrill of the bill! The best steak London has to offer? I hope not. Don't get me wrong, the place is nice. The waiter comes around with raw examples of steaks and explains the cuts and choices available. I went for the most expensive one, English (i.e. bloody). Since I had seen the raw steak I couldn' help but notice it had shrunk dramatically - not a sign of high quality beef (or meat). The taste was nice but there was a chewy bit in mine. The cheese bread and olive oil were great. Desserts ranged from incredibly greasy to pretty yummy but overall were nothing to write home about. The service was great, even though at one stage some weird waitress decided to shout through the whole place that she needed one more fork here...and there... Yes A FORK! FORK! Yes, HERE! The place itself set the tone for a nice romantic spot to have some frigin' great food!!! I thought my London trip was all about work... I am coming home to NYC tomorrow with a mission accomplished face. Will definitely be back. This is a great place, from when you walk in you are greeted at the door - which is held open for you. The staff are very accomodating and make you feel relaxed and welcome, they even use your name when addressing you. You have plenty of choice and lots of interaction with staff. You get a meat presentation and have the choice of help with the menu and recommendations. Wouldn't recommend for families as i isn't a chidl-frinedly atmosphere...adults only. read more

Steak, steak, steak in a Thames side setting This is not a place for vegetarians to visit at all ! If you like steak the Gaucho grill is the place to go to - it is a small chain, but this branch sat right by the Thames at Docklands has to be the best of all the settings. In the summer there are plentiful tables placed outside on the riverside, where you will be waited on. The steak is all from Argentina, and you choose the cut and then the size. You buy your vegetables and potatoes separately which I think works out rather costly - but saying that the dishes are very good - creamed sweet corn, home made chips etc. The wine list features lots of wines from Argentina, and they arguably go very well with the steak. It's not a cheap night out, but it is a good one and well worth trying at least once and keeping it for special occasions. read more

Apr 2012 update: Having gone back recently for a second visit, I have to say that I have to downgrade my review from 4 stars to 3. While Gaucho was one of the top places to get a steak a few years ago, now with really good new places like Hawksmoor around, it just doesn't cut it for the price it charges. The steak is still good, but not outstanding. And the service on this visit was irritating the waitress obviously had memorized a script and was just regurgitating it, even though none of us was interested in listening and just wanted to get back to our conversation. She was trying extremely hard to upsell us on sides, drinks, desserts and it was just too obvious and awkward.Sometimes its hard to give a star rating for high-end places that charge alot, because they usually come out tops in all the categories as expected from their higher prices. However, I think Guacho deserves my 4 star rating. The decor looks very posh, but not too over the top. It is best for a romantic meal or a serious celebration. Uopn seating, our waiter was with s quickly, and was very polite and informative. Drinks and bread were brought quickly, and after a while he appeared again with a wooden slab with the different types of steak on it. It is here where they impress; he spent a good 5 minutes explaining the different types of steaks they do, what the best cooking conditions were (e.g. medium-rare, medium, well done, etc) and what to expect in terms of taste of the different types. The steaks themselves were amazing they just melt in your mouth, and they are just cooked right. The side dishes were a bit disappointing though.. the chips were a bit salty, and the mushrooms a bit bland. Went to gaucho canary wharf. Been looking forward to gaucho for some time, years in fact and finally decided to go as it was my birthday. But it always looked expensive for what you got as far as i could see, hence the reason i hadnt been. And it was. I went for the 2 course set menu at £21. but the starter was not brilliant (only 3 choices) . the steak was very nice, but also very small, with some average chips. I also got red wine sauce rather than the requested peppercorn. What annoyed me was 1) like a lot of london resteraunts in decent locations they try and con people with a service charge. I had noticed this in the small print online before and was expecting it, reluctantly. but 2) I was not expecting to be charged £4.50 for a jug of water. On entry as i sat down they asked me if i wanted a jug of water for the table , i had no intention of getting any other drinks and water is my choice usually anyway. I thought with them asking me it was complimentary ( i mean it is only water for gods sakes) or a minor charge . But £4.50. Come on that is a disgrace. Service charges should be abolished in the uk anyway, they are a complete con, but the price of a jug of water left a sour taste in my mouth.
