Gaucho's decor was cool--relatively upscale but not stuffy.

I enjoyed trying a bunch of new foods at Gaucho last week in London. The ambiance of the restaurant was dark and night club-ish. The menu is exotic, but includes great descriptions and the waitress brought uncooked steaks to our table before we perused the menu to describe the differences between the cuts and preparations. It was very helpful. London is experiencing a bit of a heat wave now and they did not have any detectable air conditioning--they had the front door open, but with no other ventilation to stimulate airflow, we all had a lot of difficulty enjoying our meal with the heat. We had a fairly early reservation and were seated when the restaurant was basically empty. The place got stuffier and stuffier as the restaurant filled up with patrons. I'd like to say that the meal would have been 5-star in the winter, however our waitress started the night very attentive but we had increasing difficulty getting her attention as she got more tables to serve. We took the opportunity to really exercise the Gaucho menu, enjoying their specialty drinks, appetizers, main dishes, side dishes, desserts, and after dinner drinks. We literally had to go ask for someone to take our orders throughout the night and it took about 20 minutes to get our check when we were done. I love steak and was excited to try new food at Gaucho. I found Gaucho's preparation to be decent. We started our meal with the house bread (delicious) and the sausage platter, an appetizer that includes a variety of the restaurant's sausages served on a wood plank with a grilled red sweet pepper. This platter was a highlight of the meal because none of us had tried sausages like these before. At £19.95 we were glad that there was enough for the 3 of us to share. Members of my party tried several of the items from the Gaucho drink menu, including the Pommelina and Bocharav. They had 2nds and I think 3rds. The drinks were also a highlight. For dinner we ordered a variety of the steaks, including one spiral cut, and we were all a little underwhelmed with the output. I seriously do love me some steak and I've had much better. My steak, Tapa de Ancho, a 300g rib-eye was bland and tough...I really didn't experience the flavorful marbling she showed us in the uncooked steaks at the start of the meal. Others in my group felt the same way I did about the steaks. My mother even had the Gaucho sampler and got to try a variety, so we sort of know it wasn't a single-steak thing. For sides we shared chips, sauteed oyster mushrooms, humita salteno, and black quinoa tamal salteno. The sides were better than the steaks. We loved the humita salteno, which is a sort of mash of sweet corn, pumpkin and savory herbs served in a corn husk. The sides were delicious and I should have made a meal of them. For dessert we had the caramel flan. It was the best part of the meal and I loved it and I now need to learn to make flan so that I can feed this new nagging craving I just can't seem to shake since tasting it. Thank goodness I'm not in London anymore or I'd be at risk of a flan with coconut crumble addiction (and I just don't have time for that right now). We had fresh mint tea and cappuccinos following the meal and then attempted to get the check for about 20 minutes in the increasing heat. Our waitress was definitely busy the whole time, so I'm not saying she was snobby or avoiding us. We actually found her to be incredibly sweet, friendly, and helpful when she was available to give us attention ...it just wasn't great service, comfort, or particularly impressive food for the price.

I knew it was pricy, but whew, I was not expecting that!! Color me shocked. As soon as we walked in and saw the dining area, we felt under-dressed for how fancy the setting looked. The lighting looked impressive, the dinnerware was extra sparkly, and the staff looked posh. But, as we walked in, we saw others in sweaters and sneakers. There is a free coat check by the receptionist before you are shown to your seat. She then walks you to your seat and provides the menu before your waitstaff greets you. The view of the bridge lighting up the night from inside is nice if you get a seat near the windows. Our table was more located in the center of the restaurant, but we were still able to have an okay view. Our server was Alessio. He asked for our drinks order: 1x glass of wine, 1x virgin pina colada, and later 1x virgin mojito, then when he returned, he asked if we plan on having steaks. Once I responded yes, he quickly disappeared...I was so confused before he pops back out with a tray of various cuts of steak (see attached image). He then proceeds to explain each cut and recommended pairings. After explaining, he disappears again, assumingly this time to take the tray back. He returned shortly afterward and took our dinner order. We ordered two cuts of churrasco Lomo (we actually wanted the ribeye steak, but I guess he heard otherwise. We didn't fuss.). The steak *was* ahhhmazing!! One steak, for the birthday boy, was topped with a half grilled lobster (yes, grilled lobster is listed on the menu as a "topping"), mashed potatoes, and mac & cheese. The other steak was accompanied with roasted vegetables. I'm not sure what type of vegetables were all there, but a few cubes were not pleasing to taste. The carrots, beet, and potato were good, though. While we were eating, a lady randomly came to our table and started pouring us more water. She did not introduce herself but instead asked if there was anything else we needed. She was dressed differently from the rest of the staff, so her presence was so confusing to me. She disappeared out of sight as quickly as she appeared, before I noticed her again at the receptionist desk. It was the weirdest interaction. Minus the unknown vegetables and the unknown lady, the food was great. The setting was great. There were two other parties there celebrating a birthday as well. I planned on having cake or some other dessert to celebrate, but we were entirely too full to even consider it. We didn't even finish our food and had to take some to-go. After we were done eating and decided we did not want dessert, I asked for the bill fully expecting mid-£100s, but was taken aback when I saw the actual amount. Keep in mind, too, 12.50% gratuity was also added. I'm used to automatic gratuity being added for parties of 5 or more, not for 2 people. Wow. Anyway, I paid and we left. Since we were there to celebrate a birthday, I was okay with the cost as I know it would be thee only time I went there. If you want, I would recommend trying it for a one-time experience, but I'm sure you can get similar food and experience somewhere else for a much better price.

From the outside, and when you squint through the window, you won't see anything flash or pretentious (looking at you Gaucho), but just wooden furniture and staff in jeans and over-worn, over-washed baggy restaurant tshirts. It's when you get inside that the smell hits you. My co-eater noted, with some delight, that it even smelt like South America - the meat, the wine, the spices. Mouths were watering. Down to business - friendly, if not a little indifferent, service and rustic, simple décor. In the middle of the room is the huge grill on which the slabs of meat were being cooked. It was fun watching these guys move the meat around, clearly knowledgeable and skilled. The wine we were recommended, a Malbec of course, was damn good. When my food arrived, there was a wry smile on my face. Perhaps it was a boastful smile. The sizzling paradilla that was squeezed onto our table was a meat delight. 2 sausages, 1 black pudding, a slab of provolone and the stars of the show, a huuuuge sirloin and a juicy fillet. Shared between two, this was more than enough. We went for a side of salad to compliment. The meat was fantastic. Really, very good. And the sign of a good steak - the fat from the sirloin was melt-in-your-mouth juicy and tasty. Such a treat. As we were one of the last customers to finish, we witnessed the staff setting up for an end of shift dinner. Steaks, bread, salads and bottles of wine were assembled on the table and they promptly sat down to eat together to see the night out. Nice touch that.

We had some (well quite a lot, actually haha) Argentinian wine: the waiter had knowledge but since we were not very sure, he offered a tasting portion of the ones we were considering! We first had a drink and some loaded nachos: the nachos were just a-ok, nothing too special but our cocktails were not bad, especially considering the happy hour price. As main I went for the 14 oz steak and a side salad (yay for being able to switch sides) which was cooked to perfection. This was honestly one of the better steaks I had in a long while. Even my friend who is not a big beef lover was impressed with the food. In addition, I forgot my scarf and I messaged them afterwards and they were super helpful to trace back my scarf. Located near the back of Aldgate Station, the street was pretty empty in the evening and so it was not a surprise that we were first in the restaurant at around 6pm on a weekday. The decor here was pretty standard compared to their other branches which had a bit more colour to it. They went for the casual wooden bar look with dim comfortable lighting. Service was friendly and smiley which made us feel more welcomed in the empty restaurant. For food we went for the following: Argentina chorizo The meal started with the chorizo which was lovely and juicy, full of bounce and flavour unlike the supermarket ones you get. It was dressed with a slice of sweet red pepper which added a nice contrast of softness and drizzled over with chimichurri which added some tanginess from the vinegar and depth of flavour moving away from the red spices and to another variety of herbs that includes parsley and oregano. Provolone cheese A lovely rich cheese seasoned with spices before being grilled till it melted. They did however over salted it which made it hard to consume in large amounts, even with the accompanied toast. Fried beef empanadas Sometimes I still get cravings for their beef empanadas as its one of the best I've had. The pastry was crispy yet doughy and filled with a generous amount of minced beef, packed full of flavour and sweetness with the addition of vegetables and herbs used. Very juicy too. Baked sweet potato empanadas. Even more surprisingly was how good the sweet potato empanadas was. Soft velvety creamed sweet potato consistency in a more thin and delicate pastry. I really enjoyed the sensation of it all melting inside my mouth. Lomito Porteño I had to order their speciality dish, the Argentinian sandwich, similar to a panini being grilled too. We chose one with a rib eye steak in between and it was cooked medium rare as requested. It was good but I have had sweeter better seasoned steak. It was however saved by the other flavours. The salty provolone cheese gave it depth and seasoning whereas the addition of rocket and pepper add not only texture but a lighter refreshing taste. Napolitana lomito I much preferred this lomito. The beef being deep fried with a lovely herby batter gave the sandwich a greater flavour. The addition of ham made it more exciting and the mozzarella added bounce and helped wrapped everything together. All was finished nicely with the tomatoes and lettuce which gave it the moisture and lighter element it needed. Revuelto gramajo. What a great side to have. It was so moreish it was almost gone in an instant. Scrambled eggs with onions, peas and fries. It was fluffy, eggy, fragrant and warm. The ultimate comfort food. Highly recommended! Olivier salad Sadly this was disappointing. The dish consisted of potatoes, peas and carrots in mayo that tasted like it came out of a can. The peas didn't taste fresh and the mayonnaise was poor quality, lacking that rich eggy taste it needed. It was all under seasoned too. So overall the experience was good with some dishes really hitting the spot like the empanadas. For a chain it does well with reasonable prices. Although saying that they have made cuts, like their sandwiches no longer comes with fries. Just don't expect Wagyu steak and you can get a reasonable meal.
