This one needs more stars than just five. My best story: When i called today to ask if my suit (in for alterations) was ready, i reached the owners wife. She said, with all humility and sincerity, "If we told you it'd be ready today, it is." She didn't ask - or need - my name or claim ticket number. That's how they roll - they do what they say, and do it with grace, style, panache, friendliness, and supremely well-placed and earned confidence. I had my all-time favorite suit in for major surgery. It isn't old by any stretch, but I did buy it 40 pounds ago. It hung on my frame like a big tarp or something. When I tried it on in the shop, I couldn't believe it, it genuinely looked, felt, and fit like a custom suit. I'm blown away, even though everything i'd read and experienced told me that I'd have a good outcome. I told Gus, "Sir, you are a magician," and he got a big smile on his face. There's a reason they have the clientele they do, yet Gus is so friendly and their pricing I consider to be incredibly reasonable. I'm going to explore having a custom suit made, but it's a given that I'll be making the drive from Round Rock with ***any*** and ***all*** of my tailoring. Went in with a dress for my fiancé that was for a wedding and the wrong size. Only needed it let out where it could, basically .25 inches because there wasn't much material. She called and said I would be dropping it off and he said it was ok. He wouldn't do it without her on site. He wasted my time and was very rude about it. So she had to go back for the same thing. I asked how much it would cost to do this and again very rude. I finally got him to say under 50 to let out a simple seam next to a zipper. Then when I'm leaving he apologizes for not wanting to discuss prices in front of his staff. Guessing they are making less than minimum wage. Next day she went in and was charged 85 dollars. One he lied about price Two he has terrible ethics and treats his staff poorly Three extremely rude Four will not work with you in a rushed situation I will never support this business again based on him being rude and lying to customers. Go to another shop please!!!!! Also oddly enough I will add this. A newly created yelp member with zero stats messaged me to tell me I am the one in error here....... Suspicious. These guys have been in Austin a long time and I bring my clothes here because they do quality work and are reasonably priced. I've brought in a few pairs of jeans to get hemmed with the original hem, which I think was only 10 or 15 bucks. I also had them taper a pair of suit pants that only cost $35 for them to do. Joseph Faraj, one of the two adorable brothers who own Gassane Tailors, agreed to hem a pair of straight leg jeans while I waited one day. I have had several items hemmed and repaired by this wonderful tailor shop and they are big on customer service. While I waited and sipped a bottled water, I admired the framed photos of Texas icons such as LBJ and George W. Bush. All were classics. In a few minutes, Gus, the other half of the shop who knows alot about Texas and US politics, came out front and shook my hand. After a few of Gus's entertaining and funny stories, my jeans were ready to go! I brought in a suit jacket to be taken in at the sides, and they also suggested shortening the collar to remove a wrinkle across the shoulders. I went to collect the jacket 2 weeks later, and was horrified to see that they had been hanging it on a dry-cleaner-type thin wire hanger. Hanging the suit jacket this way stretched out the fabric, and there's a permanent series of creases on one side now. As a tailor, they should know better than to hang my $1500 Italian suit on such a lousy hanger. Had I known that they didn't have suit hangers, I would have left mine there. Very unprofessional. What's more, after charging me $147 for the work, there's still a pronounced wrinkle across the shoulders. The person there assured me that the crease and wrinkle would disappear with use, but it's been 10 months with no improvement. So, poor workmanship, and mistreatment of my suit jacket, warrants a 2-star rating. read more

They may have worked with presidents place surely don't treat you like president. The place is run by two very kind guys who I like a lot. However they totally botched one of my shirts that's now unwearable and I had a custom shirt that doesn't look any better than a shirt I bought off the shelf and has some problem areas they say they can't fix. Doesn't sound much like custom to me. Their custom shirt didn't even fit as well as the shirt I brought in as a sample of the type of shirts that I like. They also told me that part of the custom shirt building process was to create a template you try on and make adjustments to it until they get it right. It may take a few adjustments but is worth it for getting a template that works for future shirts. From there they always know exactly your measurements. They built one shirt for me but it didn't fit . When I told him I didn't like it and their response was "we will try to make some adjustments on the second shirt." Then they charged me for the one that wasn't made properly. I'm certainly not to give him a shot at a second shirt. Not for $200. Again, the guys who own the place are incredibly nice and likable. But I won't be back. read more

It's obvious why Gassane has such a solid fan base: they are simply the best. Unfortunately, I am not the best, and procrastinated getting my clothes for my sister's wedding last weekend. I finally put an outfit together about a week and a half before the event itself, only to realize the pants I had weren't a skinny cut. Panicked, I called all around town to various tailors to see if they could change my pants to a skinny cut in a under a week. Place after place denied me, sometimes rudely. I finally called Gassane Tailors and they told me to come right in and they'd see what they could do. When I arrived I was greeted quickly and warmly and told to put on the pants so he could get to work immediately. What? I wasn't even aware they could do this for me! Relieved, I did as was told and they got their measurements. I offered to pay extra because it was a rush job and was shooed out the door with a kitkat in hand. All in all I paid less than $40 for a totally last minute complete redo of my pants that fit PERFECTLY. I got compliments on my outfit all night. They are simply the best in town, and I will definitely be returning (even if he does have pictures of George W Bush all over his office). read more

I came in with a dress and was explaining that another tailor in town told me what I wanted was impossible but I'd thought it was actually pretty simple. Gus had me try it on, say- Oh yes, I know exactly what to do- and did it perfectly. Also, he tailored my husbands wedding suit- sharp! and mended some suit pants that we had to look for a while to even find where the tear was. When I picked up our clothes on a Saturday morning, Gus's brother Joseph gave me more candy than usual "for breakfast". V. sweet. Joseph also had some ROCKING cuffs on- black square with bright pink roses. So, don't forget to appreciate a few details of their lifetime style when you stop by. read more

OMG! How perfect can you get with a tailor? I mean prior to Gassane it was pricey hit or miss. There was only one time that they hemmed up a skirt and made me go hmmm, did I say short in the front, long in the back? Turned out it worked anyway but it was not what I had expected or articulated but they knew best? I guess. In any case this was only one slight difference of opinion in over five years of happy service. I have taken in vintage items , new clothing, $2 shirts from garage sales ...all were treated with the utmost respect and got great hemlines, makeovers and zippers. It can get pricey. I found out moving a zipper is like $25, reasonable when it's all you want done but when you add a hemming, and darts...could get pricey. But hey, look at all they can do for you. Friendly service each time! One thing though, beware the Bush photos in the dressing room. He apparently picked these guys to do his stuff when he was gov. I cringe when I go in there but otherwise, great tailors. read more

Ok, believing all the reviews - we took a nice jacket there to have the cuffs shortened somewhat. After some discussion with the tailor, an unfortunate compromise was reached to make the four button cuff a three button cuff. We left the jacket there and had a pick up date of a month later. Two weeks before the pickup date, I called to see how the jacket was progressing, and to ask if I could move the pickup date to two days earlier. Initially they couldn't find the jacket ticket number, but assured me that it would be ok to pick it up early. The day before the pickup date I called again, and was told that it wouldn't be a problem to pick it up tomorrow, they would work on the jacket that night. That night?? It had been there for over three weeks, and they hadn't done squat to it? Ok - so I picked up the jacket, paid for the service ($45) without complaint - and then inspected their work once I'd gotten home. It was slipshod at best, and the work they did was very hurried and sloppy. I could have done the same type of alteration at home. They didn't remove the fourth button hole stitching and turn the cuff under from the inside out, they just turned the cuff under and hand stitched it. The fourth button hole hadn't been cut so the stitching could have been removed and had the new sleeve hem stitched at the button hole. Now the jacket is ruined, and I can't resell it with the bad alteration that it has, and I'm out the $45 for the alteration. I miss Tina's Master Tailor. read more

I am now officially the best wife in the entire world! My hubby has found his tailoring heaven and it's all thanks to little ole me and my Yelping. The story started when he bought himself a new suit at Marshall's. A lovely Calvin Klein that needed to be tailored to fit him properly. And, the suit was missing the buttons on the sleeves. He took it to the dry-cleaners to be tailored, but they didn't have buttons. So they told him to buy some buttons and bring the suit back So Hubby comes home and says to me, "I'm damned tired of taking my suits to the dry-cleaner's for tailoring. They always get it wrong." I replied, "Let me check Yelp." Sure enough, Yelpers were recommending Gassane Tailors. We went down there together and met the most delightful little man ever! He introduced himself as Gus and proceed to tell my husband to go put on the suit. My husband did and with his chalk, or whatever you call that thing he marks on the suit with, he got to work. Unlike Hubby's visits to the dry-cleaners, Gus didn't didn't ask him how he wanted the pants hemmed or how long the sleeves should be. Gus just knew. Made the Hubby feel so at ease because he wasn't being put on the spot as to how to tailor the suit. Gus was in control, making all the right decisions and suggestions. Then when Hubby said he didn't have sleeve buttons, Gus replied that they would be in the pocket. Gus started checking all the pockets, and, lo and behold, in one of the inside pockets, there the blasted little things were! Now, I ask you, why didn't the tailor at the dry-cleaners know that? When we went to pick up the suit, it was ready as promised and it was perfect! At that moment, we knew that we had found our very own tailor to the stars. These guys are amazing! I had no idea that a full-service expert tailor shop was in this area, and now that I've found out, I'm moving to Dallas. Figures. Anyway, Joseph had excellent customer service and lengthened a set of suit pants that 1) were several inches too short and 2) completely uneven. He did this handy little service for a paltry $12.00, although doing the arms of the jacket would be quite a bit more because it's all hand work from there. After that, he fixed a 3/4 trench coat that I really liked quite a bit but had accidentally rolled over in an office chair. I had ripped a horizontal hole about nine inches long about three inches from the bottom of the coat. He cleaned it up and turned it into a fake seam that you can barely see anyway, and it fits the aesthetic of the coat. I was offered nothing but absolute professionalism while visiting here and excellent service for a good price. Thanks, guys! read more

I have never needed anything tailored before but my best friend is getting married and the bridesmaids dresses came from an online boutique. The dress came and I couldn't hook it across my back or at my lower back. I called Gassane on a Monday and told them my dilemma and that I needed the dress by Friday because the wedding was Saturday. They told me to come in after work and they could help me. I arrived Monday and got help from Joesph, who is so sweet. I tried on the dress with my shoes and we decided to lower the back (J-Lo style) and the strap across my back would tie up instead. I showed up Friday morning at 9:20am to my dress and the tailoring was done so flawlessly. The dress was beautiful before but now it's perfect and they did it so quickly for me. EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE! Hmm. Well he did a good job on one item, but the other one not so much. So here's the thing, I bought a nice suit back when I was a size 31 waist. I had the pants tailored to fit me snugly to give me that trendy slim look. So that was a huge mistake. Blah blah blah my button breaks off last summer and I can't fit in these pants anymore. I don't wear these pants for a year, and then I bring it in to Gus because I want to wear them for graduation weekend--my last weekend in Austin before moving away. He undersells me on his ability to expand the pants, saying he'll give it a shot. I also bring in this awesome, nonreturnable shirt to have slimmed down. It's probably a whole size too big for me. He also undersells me on this job. I have to say the underselling bugged me. Maybe it's a technique to gauge expectations, or maybe it's a lack of confidence; either way his underselling did not put me at ease and did not add satisfaction. I get the pants back and they turn out great--I can fit in them again. And you know what, they still sell the slim look pretty good. It is truly awesome to have my favorite suit pants back despite my enlargened butt. Unfortunately the shirt is still huge. He just didn't do a whole lot. I noticed it was a little slimmer, but not nearly enough. And I couldn't have him fix it--I was leaving town that weekend. It's true the shirt's under-tailoring could have resulted from a miscommunication about what I really wanted--it can be a little difficult to understand Gus through his heavy accent. Well it's too late now. Guess I'll have to take my shirt to another tailor. read more

And now that he has all of his measurements on file, I can even drop in, pick a fabric and have one made for him as a surprise. Talking to Gus is amazing. He has wonderful stories from making gorgeous suits for so many people including LBJ! His shop is filled with great photos and clippings, as well as the requisite fabric swatches. While they're a tailor who specializes in men's wear, they tailor for all, I even saw a woman bring in a child's sweater to repair! Like many who frequent this tailor, my story begins with procrastination and ends with satisfaction. I was a groomsman for a wedding taking place on August 9th. In an uncharacteristic fit of responsibility, I had my basic measurements taken and my suit ordered early, whereupon I promptly reverted to form and ignored it until about a week and a half before the wedding. My proportions are a little off, so I needed the jacket sleeves and the pant legs taken in. I rolled up to this place in a panic with my suit to be altered at 5:56pm on July 30th. Their closing time is 6pm, but quite reasonably, since nobody else was being irresponsible that day, the store had already closed and the owner was on his way out the door. Actually, make that out of the parking lot - he was in his car pulling out of his spot. When he saw me come roaring in, he immediately shifted into reverse, pulled back in, and reopened the store so I could get measured and scheduled. He was friendly and attentive, and promised that my suit would be ready in a week. Seven days later on the 7th I was back, again just before closing time, and my suit was done and perfect, exactly as he'd promised. He made me try it on to double-check, but it was exactly right. For just over $50, I got my suit sleeves and pants just how I needed it. Friendly, timely, and affordable - I know where I'm going the next time I need tailoring that accommodates my own particular brand of life scheduling. read more

My wedding dress arrived from China beautiful but with some very unfortunate issues. It was too long, too big in the waist, and perhaps most importantly the top hook just hooked on to the lace. It had no receiver. I figured since the dress was relatively inexpensive I could go higher end on the alterations. Thus I googled what was the best tailor in Austin - Gassane came right up. And it was true. The store is small but charmingly old school sophisticated. The walls were lined with their triumphs, photographs with local celebrity clientele. George W. Bush and Matthew McConaughey to name a few. I was a bit bewildered when I first came in. It reminded me of the odd mom and pop shops I saw living in Connecticut. Then I met the man who runs the place. He was warm and effusive with disarming honesty. My now husband had brought in his suit to be tailored. It was a suit his uncle had from his British adventures in the 1970's. When the owner saw it on him he declared the fit perfect and his honesty was rather refreshing. The pants had to be taken in and up some. It made sense, Uncle V is a good two to three inches taller. My dress, on the other hand, he would not look at. He told me to return in a few days when his wife would be there. That my dress was too special and that his wife would make it look lovely. When I returned she was there and as charming as her husband. She made the marks quickly and precisely with the chalk. She took my concerns about the collar seriously by installing both a hook receiver and a button snap. The dress that was returned to me was perfect and I was besides myself to have it. Joseph and Amel are amazing!! I had a bridesmaid emergency and had already been told by one tailor (who I went to because of all the 5-star reviews on Yelp) that in order to make it work the dress would have to change in certain ways and it would look very different, which as a bridesmaid is not exactly the goal, so I set out in search of a second opinion. Joseph had me show him the issue and said that he would have his wife Amel call me the next morning at 11:00, as she was the one that would do most of the work. She called promptly at 11:00, gave me a reasonable estimate, and said they could get it done within the time frame I needed (which was absurdly short, to be honest). When I came in for the first fitting the next day Amel had nearly completed all the work, and the dress hardly looked like it had been touched. It was amazing. The final fitting was the next afternoon, and I was so impressed with the wonderful work they had done and their kind words, I was nearly in tears. They are such a lovely couple, honest and hard-working, and you can tell that they truly love what they do. Amel put her whole heart into that dress, and I felt like a goddess wearing it on Saturday. (And most importantly, nobody even noticed that it had been worked on, which was my goal.) If you're in Austin and in need of a tailor, this is definitely the place to go. The brothers are really the best you are going to find. Keep in mind Gus is a Master Tailor, there are about 20 of these left in the US. The price is going to be a little bit higher but the work is just extraordinary. They can do things you aren't supposed to be able to do. I've actually had them take in a 46R jacket to the point that is wearable on my 42R frame. For properly sized garments their work is amazing. I NEVER wear anything off the rack anymore. Keep in mind that alteration will take about three weeks. Don't take something there and then gripe that it takes a while. Finally, don't forget the ties. This is the guy that changed the power color from red to blue when he put Bush in them. He's usually got a great selection of ties that run around $50-80 and would be $135 to $185 anywhere else. Gus is very picky when it comes to ties. I get unsolicited compliments on every one of them I wear. read more

These brothers are the fairy godfathers of tailoring. They greeted me warmly and may I say you do travel a bit back in time when stepping into their shop. Their walls are lined with plaques honoring their craftsmanship with various Texas governors that later came to be presidents. I initially brought a pair of jeans as a test run and they got an A+. When the jeans were returned to me they were pressed and fit to perfection. I then brought two dresses. One of the dresses was way over sized and had pockets in the lining. If you have ever had a dress with pockets tailored you know the look they give you when they see pockets. Pockets = $more money. One of the dresses had great detail on the bottom that needed to be matched perfectly or it would just look off. They just did an amazing job. I can't tell you how highly I recommend them. For those budget conscious out there, they aren't cheap, but well worth it. The tailoring of my jeans with original hem was $22 and the dresses (one with pockets) to have taken in and up and also one more piece that needed to be taken in was around $90. read more

Superb service and really great tailoring work. I recently brought in a suit (jacket + trousers) to Joseph. I asked him to shorten the jacket sleeves and taper the pant legs (from the thigh down instead of just knee down), and came back 2 weeks later for pickup. At first, I thought that no work was done because there were no visible signs of alterations - after trying on both items, it was clear that this was just the result of fine handiwork. As a first time "tailee", I felt the prices were kind of high... but Joseph did a really great job of making sure I was satisfied. Jacket sleeves were excellent, and when I felt the pant legs could be brought in even more after my initial try-on, Joseph quickly took care of it then and there at no extra charge. I still have a weird feeling that I may have gotten overcharged since I look like a college student... but I'm too happy with the quality to dwell much on that. read more

These guys are super friendly, and good repairing or altering existing clothes. But having said that, they are horrible at making tailored suits or tuxes. After 6 weeks, 4 fittings, and even showing them a style of suit I liked, I ended up with an ill fitting $2200 1950s tux that just looked horrible. I'm a fit person, and proud of that, so I wanted a modern slim tux, but all they know how to make are 1950s tuxes with huge shoulder pads and that basically make you look like an overweight gangster from the 1940s or 50s. I found an off the rack Armani tux for half the price that fits infinitely better. So I paid $2200 for a tux I never wore. I will not be going back here, but if you're older, heavier, and don't care about looking modern, then these guys are friendly and will sell you a very nice overpriced suit with a smile. read more

I've been reading the book "The Pocket Stylist," which advises "ready-to-wear is not ready to wear." In addition to advocating style for any body type, the author suggests finding a good tailor to make your clothes look great for your body. Recently I found a skirt on sale that I loved, but it was cut for somebody shaped like a toothpick. I was about to give up, when I remembered this advice. I bought the next size up, and took the skirt to Gassane. I actually had them fix two skirts for me, and am very pleased with the results. My boyfriend also got a kung fu uniform tailored here.
