Alterations to Go will do a fine job hemming your jeans for the super low price of $8. That's no typo. Eight bucks. Says so right on the giant window cling at the front of the store, which faces a Dollar General and Big Lots in the faded strip center that time forgot - same dingy block where Asia Market and Ann's Kitchen Cakes are located. I had snagged an awesome pair of fancy Penguin brand jeans at Ross, original MSRP $128, Ross bargain price $19.99. Yay for bargains! The fit was fantastic, but as with most designer jeans on my 62 inch frame, the length was about 10 inches too long. If only clothing makers would realize that most human females are not built like the specimens on America's Next Top Model.... It took Alterations to Go only 2 days to complete my job, and that was on a holiday week. I asked that the original "designer" hem be replicated and was promised that it would be, but when I went to pickup the pants, a wrong colored thread had been used. I pointed this out to the tailor/manager (who was not the same person I spoke to when dropping off); he apologized and offered to replace the thread with one that was close to the original, as they did not have that exact color in jean-strength thread. The jeans were ready within 24 hours and the hem looked great. Even though I had to wait an additional day, I will use ATG again & recommend them to petite friends for hem work. The customer service response to my problem was excellent and the $8 price can't be beat. Just know that you have to be sure to check the work when you pickup, and don't be afraid to ask for a do over if you don't like the work the first time around. read more

Thanks to Shannon B. and Yelp, I have been visiting Alterations To Go for almost a year and have both spent and saved a lot of money here. Hems cost $8 for the simple hem, more if you want something special. If you are getting 10 pair of pants hemmed, that is a sizeable savings compared to $15 elsewhere. ($8 is the lowest I have found in Austin.) The owner is Dick, and he is very sweet, thorough, and professional. The woman who hems the clothes is Yen, and she is very sweet, thorough, and professional. Depending on how much stuff you bring in, hemming can take anywhere from 3-7 days... not sure if they do next day service but you could ask. Dick calls when the pants are ready, usually earlier than they promised. I remember discussing a cuff on a size 16 brown dress pants with Dick. Even though he would make more money off of replicating the cuff, Dick's opinion was, "The cuff makes the pants look heavier and I think all of your efforts are going in the other direction... no cuff will look more slimming." Thanks, Dick. It feels very old fashioned... that a place would be so sweet and chivalrous and honest. A few months ago, I was standing on their podium wearing very tight size 10 leather pants, being pinned by Yen, and Dick said, "Umm, Kimberly, you seem like a nice lady and a good person. Whenever you come in, you have a cheerful attitude. I only mean this in the best of ways, and you may not be open to this idea at all, but if you would be, I have a good friend who I am sure would love to go on a date with you..." This was in July, and I thanked him but said that I was not ready at that time. Could it have been the leather pants? Did I look lonely? Who is this "friend"? What is going on, no one has ever said anything like this to me in my life. I need more leather pants... I went in yesterday to pick up 9 pair of leather pants.* I said to Yen, "Dick asked a few months ago if I would like to go on a date with his friend...?" She responded, "Yes, I remember overhearing that conversation. He has very good friends... good people. He thinks you are a good person." "Thanks, Yen, I appreciate that and I appreciate your hard work on my many pair of pants in the past year. Could you let Dick know I am ready now?" Some helpful side notes: 1. The previous tenants in this space must have smoked because I detect a lingering cigarette smell. I asked and Yen said no one smokes in this space. My clothes never smell like cigarettes after being hemmed and I have never seen anyone smoking, so i know it is just a lingering smell and should not deter you from leaving clothing here. 2. It is not fancy. The interior is painted a bright pink and basically needs an updating/overhaul. I overlook this because I would bet the $8 per hem price would rise if the shop was improved. 3. Yes, they did a fine job on my jeans.. but the prices are getting expensive since they have that sticker on the door.. "People Like Us on Yelp" thingy. Boo!! as if they are taking advantage of that sticker! No.. hemming jeans is not $8 anymore. It's $12 now. And forget about resizing your shirts.. The prices are getting very expensive- $24 just because it needed to be taken by side.. well, that is their term- "Take By Side". I was kind of disappointed with the prices. It seems to me that they want to charge in every way they could. The fact that I went out of the way from where I live to Austin for good alterations job and good prices, is too much for what I wasted on gas, at least these days. I had about 5 pairs of pants hemmed here last week. I'm a pretty short guy -- 5ft5 -- and starting my first professional job after college. I dropped them off nervously, but they looked absolutely excellent when done. The woman helped me find the right length (I kept wanting to go too long) and they look a lot more neat and professional than they would had I done them my way. I took them in on a Tuesday and the woman initially told me I could pick them up on Monday. I asked if it'd be possible to get them on Friday -- or at least one pair so I could use them for work on Monday. She then told me she'd finish them ALL for me by Friday, no extra charge. Better yet, she called me later that day and told me they'd all be ready on Wednesday because she and her employee/coworker were going to stay late. It was very convenient for me! I wasn't charged for the quick service, either! They were also very sweet. I was nervous because my dress pants were women's. I was kind of worried they'd think me weird, but nobody said anything if they even noticed. Yes, yes, I wear women's pants. They fit well. Sue me. It ran me about $10-$12 a pair (I think one pair was more because it had an interior lining) and I will certainly be taking more pants back to this place. read more

Situation: Old khakis. Each a tad too long. Bottoms a bit frayed. None quite suitable for work. Action: I got my khakis hemmed at Alterations To Go. The owner was helpful and gave me good guidance on the proper length for professional attire. The price she quoted me was very reasonable. (~$10/hem for khakis) Result: I now have three "new" khakis that I can wear to work! The alterations were well worth the price, especially compared to how much it would have cost me to get brand new khakis. I almost wish I had more khakis to hem just so I can go back. This place is great. I had a pair of suit pants that didn't fit worth a damn, like in that commercial, where the woman has eaten all the key lime pie and boston cream pie and she's arguing that she really needs her pants taken in because those were actually yogurt flavors? Yeah, totally opposite of that in my case 'cause eff yogurt. So these pants that needed to be let out...for a funeral. They hooked me up and turned them around for pick-up the next day. Special bonus: genuine, heartfelt condolences. I appreciate the warmth and sincerity of the staff here. They are top-notch. Since then, I've had a button hole added to a shirt and jeans shortened with the original hem. Each time they have made sure to let me know about anything that could come as a surprise. For example, on the shirt with the buttonhole, she told me that it wouldn't match exactly, because the hole would be cut and stitched by hand, whereas the other holes were done by machine. No biggie, it is tucked in anyway. I'm glad I found this place. Close to work, reasonably priced and a friendly staff. read more

Yes, it's an old shopping center, old buildings, but the woman who hemmed my pants was perfectly sweet. I had a new suit altered here and it came close to $100 for the whole thing. I needed it for a wedding so it was a bit of a rush but the lady did not charge me any extra for it which was nice. Overall I'm satisfied with the way it turned out. The main reason I chose this place was because of its close proximity to my house and because of the good reviews on here. I am not disappointed however in Omaha, I had my suit altered for almost half the price. Not sure what the rates are at other places around here but I just thought it was a bit much. I cannot recommend alterations to go enough! I needed last-minute alterations on a dress the day before my law school graduation. I dropped my dress off at 3pm the day before graduation and they were ready at 11am the next day with plenty of time! The alterations were very well done and the service couldn't have been better. A hidden gem in NW Austin! I've been coming here for several years and am always satisfied from basic hemming to difficult zipper replacement on a winter jacket. Now that I've found a reliable & reasonable tailor, I find myself far more likely to repair existing clothes than replace with new purchases. The owner is super nice and really cares about her clients. Things are always ready as scheduled and she checks to make sure you are happy with final product. One exception was last year I had an alteration that was not ready for pick-up and was planning to take it on a trip the next day. She personally delivered to my house by end of day (I live 20 min away from shop) to make sure I had the item for my trip. I had a mending emergency! never thought I would be in a situation where I would need something mended with in a couple of hours but it happened. My jump suit blew up on me while in the wind tunnel at iFly Austin. Being from out of town and that is the only suit I have with me I needed it fixed before my next flight in the tunnel. I brought the suit to the owner an hour and a half before closing on Saturday she was very understanding. she promised me that she will have it done before closing and we made arrangements to for me to get it in case she left before I made it to the store. I paid her in advance and she called me when she was done with it. I went to the store and looked where we agreed the suit would be sure enough it was there and good as new... well at least where it was mended it's an old suit and needs replacing. read more

I came to them twice because my boss insists on making us wear company polo shirts that only fit large men. I'm a small girl, so enter Austin Alterations. They are knowledgeable, honest and fast. They are also a bit on the pricey side, but their service is good. FYI, they only accept cash or check. The quality of the alterations I got here was really superb. I had two (pricey) suits tailored and they now they have that great "cool guy" fit and I can wear them with pride. I had the jackets brought in on the back, the sleeves were tapered, the pants were hemmed and tapered as well. They were even able to fix a fold of fabric that was misplaced in the jacket (at no extra charge). This place is a bit expensive, but it's worth it when the service is so great and the craftsmanship is on point. When I originally wrote my review, I was coming off the high of how great they did with the dress alterations. As I mentioned in my review, I then followed up by taking in pants that needed to be hemmed. Since that time, two of the pairs of pants came unhemmed. I've been losing a bunch of weight so I no longer wear that size of pant anymore, but I was bummed out that I would've needed to take them back in to keep wearing them. I've also moved to Houston for another job and found a local tailor. For comparison's sake, my new tailor here in Houston charges just over $9 (can't remember the cents) for the same work - hemming on wide leg pants - that Alterations To Go charged $21, which as I just mentioned ended up coming undone anyway. If I still lived in Austin I would give this place the opportunity to make it up to me - redoing the undone hems or what have you - but that's geographically no longer an option for me. Now that I'm more savvy about potential pricing options elsewhere, I'd question what they're charging for the simple jobs, namely the pants. Considering the amount of work required on the dress I needed altered, I'm still pleased with both the price and the outcome. read more

I debated whether I should give this place 2 stars or 3 stars, but because the people are so friendly, I'm going with 3. I have not had much luck with this tailor. They are fine if you need something simple done, such as getting pants hemmed or a button sewn on. (No, I don't know how to do this. Feel free to laugh at me.) As far as bigger jobs, I would look elsewhere, though they have actually screwed up a simple button sewing too. I believe the first time I went here, I was trying to alter a dress. The top part of the dress was kind of puffy and looked ill-fitting, like I needed DD boobs or bigger to fill it in. I should have just returned the dress, but I was having a hard time finding something appropriate to wear to an October beach wedding in Mexico. I brought it in and tried to explain that I wanted the "puffiness" to go away and they seemed to understand. I went to pick it up and, unlike my previous alterations place, they did not encourage me to try it on to make sure I was satisfied. I assumed everything would be fine, but when I got home and put it on, the top was still really puffy. I brought it back and tried to explain what I wanted again. They tried to fix it, but there was still a bit of puffiness. I gave up and figured it was good enough. As for this button sewing that I mentioned, you can normally rely on them for that, but I had a button come off a jacket that I really liked. The jacket had ruffles and the buttons were on the ruffles, but sewn down to the actual jacket to keep the ruffles from flopping around from the weight of the buttons. I brought the jacket in, picked it up a few days later, then got home and realized the button had just been sewn right onto the ruffle. Now that section of the ruffle keeps flipping over. It isn't a huge deal and I haven't bothered to get it fixed, but it just annoys me. Had they paid an ounce of attention, the job I was paying for could have been done correctly. The last time I went there, I brought in a pretty cream colored coat. I don't normally alter my coats (or much of anything, for that matter), but I thought the coat was very elegant looking and I wanted it to fit perfectly. I always find coat/jacket sleeves to be a bit long on me, so I went in and asked to have them shortened. I didn't think it was going to be an extensive job, but the tailor said that a bunch of other things would have to be done to get the sleeves shortened and it was going to cost $50. I went along with it and picked up my coat a week later. Again, I was not encouraged to try it on and I assumed all would be fine. Well, when I did finally try it on, everything fit so long as I was simply standing with my arms at my sides. Once I went to reach for something, the coat got really tight in the upper arm area. I tried to just wear it anyway, but I can't deal with it. I can't even drive comfortably. Maybe this is more my screw up than theirs, as I've never had this done before and I don't know if this is something that normally happens, but if this is something that is to be expected, it would have been nice if they had warned me about it. And if my sleeves didn't really need to be shortened in the first place, I also would have appreciated them telling me that if I went any shorter, the coat would not fit right. Instead, I am out almost $200 for a coat that I never even really got to wear. If you decide to go here, I highly recommend trying on everything in store after it has been altered. If you have a button or something that needs to be sewn to a particular area that isn't blatantly obvious, definitely point it out to them. Oh, and if those coat sleeves are a little long, just leave them. It's not worth it. read more

Ok, mine is not a tale of wedding dress repair or last minute hems. I have a boat cover that ripped across a seam. It was custom altered for my boat and all told ran about $350 not including time. So when it ripped, I wanted to fix it rather than replace it. Got on me trusty Yelp site and found the closest alterations shop to me with good ratings and took in my dirty bundle of lake smells. Walking up to the shop. (Ok, first of all I couldn't find it. It's not in the main strip of shops with Big Lots. It's in the middle of the parking lot in a separate strip.) Walking up to the shop I see through the window lots of nice dresses etc in the shop. I walk in with my boat cover and tell my tale and ask if she could do it. She said let me see. So I threw it on the ground and began to unwrap it. Snatched up the big insect creature hitching a ride that tried to escape to the dresses and threw him out the door. (She didn't flinch by the way, quite impressive.) She then described to me why the stitch failed and how she would repair it. Then she apologetically looked up and said it would cost $50 to repair. (I tried not to go "Woo hoo!!!" and cooly said, "That's fine".) Picked it up on time and nicely repaired. Will take actual clothes to her next time but love the service I received. read more

I'm 4'10" so I have to shorten every pair of pants I buy. I always dread it because I've had some bad alterations in the past that left me with pants that were either hemmed too short or not enough. I thought I would give this place a try since it had many positive reviews and I'm so happy I did. I took three pairs of pants in to get altered and Lisa did a great job. She suggested that I taper one pair instead of hemming and she was absolutely right. I was overjoyed with how they turned out and will be going here for all of my alterations from now on. I recently moved up here, and decided to check her out after finding out that she's located just down the road. I just dropped off my latest yoga pants and I can't wait to see them tomorrow!! My first time here, I took an intricately designed dress made of lace, with straps that crossed in the front, and then divided into two lacey straps on each side down my back. So there were four lacey straps. She did it in a week, and it looked AMAZING. I even had people stopping to take my picture at the football game because, as two girls said, "You look like Marilyn Monroe." She's also honest -- at first on the lace dress, I wanted to have the hem taken up. I had brought in the heels that I was going to wear with the dress, and she told me that while it looked a little long while I was barefoot, when I was wearing 5" heels it was the right length. I've used Austin Alterations 3 times, and I recommend them completely. The first time was to get a suit completely reworked after losing 40 lbs. This was beyond simply 'taking it in'. I needed it completely re-cut. It fits perfect and looks great. The second time was to see what could be done to save my favorite Zanella pants (moths had eaten three dime sized holes in them). They re-weaved the pants and the holes are practically invisible. The third time, a pair of 7 for All Mankind jeans ended up with a huge rip in the seat. Got those back today and I can't even tell it happened. It's like magic. The suit re-cutting and the pant re-weaving were both pretty spendy, but totally worth it. Fixing the jeans was much cheaper. The store is a little hard to find, but keep looking. They're in the island of store fronts. read more

I went in to get two pairs of jeans tapered at the bottom, and was quoted 97 dollars for the pair which is really high. I went to Q Alterations a mile away and spent 30 for both with tax, and they look perfect. I can't comment on the work Alterations To Go does, but when the price is 3 times the cost of it's closest competitor, it may be considered a little overpriced. read more
