Oh Game Play, I don't know how you drag me 45 minutes away from my local area to come pick up games, but I do. The prices of games regardless of new or used are either standard retail or competitive compared to other retailers. (Competitive prices usually occur when they sell retro gear.) They also offer figurines and joysticks that most retailers won't carry. If you need the latest Hori joystick because you don't like how a Madcatz one feels? Well come here, they have those in stock. They also offer used DVDs, anime/gaming posters and even Japanese snacks. A big plus is that this place will tend to carry newer niche games. So if you were on the fence about a particular title such as many that Atlus provides, you'll probably find it here in stock. The best thing about this place is that I guess they're not required to ask you for preorders or subscriptions to anything, because it's not a huge corporation like GameStop. It feels like a standard mom and pop style place with a few more locations scattered across California. Speaking of preorders, they do take them here and they seem to be on the ball on it even if you don't put money down. Although I ended up picking Xenoblade on official launch date, they still gave me a courtesy call letting me know it came in when I didn't preorder. If you don't like the billions of questions GameStop employees are told to ask you, then Game Play is the place to be. However, the customer service varies. One day, you might get the awesome peppy person always ready to help you. Other times, you might get a condescending hipster who'll look at you as if you know nothing about video games. Interestingly enough, it's across the street from a GameStop, so if you prefer that kind of atmosphere, you can always take your business back. Game Play is an absolute gem. It's one of the few privately owned video game stores left on the planet. The staff are all extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The staff also never pressure you over some silly membership card or pre-order nonsense the way other retail stores do. Most importantly, they sell their games for much less and offer more for trade-in than any of the major retailers. Game Play is also one of the last places you can go to buy retro gaming consoles and games. You can find stuff for N64, SNES, Genesis, GameBoy Color, and more. They even sell rare imports and cool gamer gear and accessories. If you live within 30 minutes of this place, I would highly recommend it over ANY major retail store. read more

This game store has all the nostalgia games. I recently bought a PS3 game here for cheap and the condition of the game was good, but it still worked. They even leave a layaway just so you can pick up a game you requested should you give them a call. GameStop isn't the place for me if this store has everything I'm looking for. read more

I went a day before to buy two games and when I got home they didn't work. Even though they took my info, remembered me from the previous day, and made me an account with them I was unable to return them the next day because I didn't have a receipt (which they didn't provide). I can't believe they'd rather lose a customer than give back $20!!! Also horribly overpriced, and huge risk of your purchases not working. They provide excellent customer service but it's probably due to the low quality of their merchandise and because they're desperate to get any sells in. read more

This store is amazing. They have loads of cool games and vintage consoles (as well as new consoles and games), and the staff is INCREDIBLE. James and his team really blew me away with their customer service. I was having issues with a used system I bought from them (I live in LA so getting down to Long Beach is not easy) but the staff at Game Play made it worth it! They let me exchange the system I bought and even tested it with me in the store to ensure the one I was taking home would work - and the whole time there were nothing but friendly and helpful and making sure I had everything I needed! James and his team were amazing - I definitely plan on making the drive down to Long Beach on my days off in the future whenever I'm looking for a new game! read more

Great video game store, from old to new they have a lot of variety, and lots of movie selections as well. They have comparable prices and trade in value to other stores but a major plus about Gameplay is they'll call you for your pre-order as soon as shipment arrives, and you can pre-order for as low as $1. The service is always friendly and very chill, no pressuring into buying DLC of preordering games like Gamestop, here they let you shop at ease, which I really appreciate. Also, they have an active Facebook page which always mentions any promotions or deals they're having. I can't see myself needing to go anywhere else when it comes to buying game in person. read more

First time I went here, I was in 7th grade and the staff was super nice and the prices were really fair. I heard about them again freshman year when they sold Modern Warfare 2 early. When I decided to buy Gears 3, I went to their new location and attempted to buy the game. They were sold out and since I didn't have a preorder, I got one. You can put any amount of money down on a game which is nice. They told me the game would be in on monday and soon enough, I get a phone call that the game came in. Not an automated message either, which I thought was cool. Sure enough, I go back and he hands me the game. Super cool staff and atmosphere. Won't try to hard sell you like Gamestop. Normally I'm all for any business. I gave this place an initial go trying to replace a broken ps3 controller....I have now bought two "brand new" PS3 controllers and neither of them work. The first one had a broke left trigger. The second one can't work unless plugged in and when it does rarely work without the cord, it goes awol after five seconds. The guy who owns the place is nice but honestly the business is sketchy. If the product is new, why have two NEW products not worked properly. You've lost my business entirely. If you're looking for a console and video game nostalgia this is your place. I recently reconnected with a ps2 console that I got off a friend. Problem was I had no video games to play. Searched eBay OfferUp and all those apps you can think of but either I didn't find what I wanted or found it and was unsure of it possibly not working. However, LUCKILY I came across this place. This place had a HUGE variety of PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360 and of course products for the newer consoles such as games, controllers, Tv cords, and all that. I came in because I discovered it here on yelp. I was not disappointed. Henry greeted me, and the store was pretty empty so he carried a conversation with me, and whenever I had a question about a game in stock or how the process of cleaning disc or selling used Cd's worked he communicated with me exceptionally well. This is one of my FAVORITE spots in all of Long Beach. In a day and age filled with an abundance of streaming services and digital rentals, this small spot holds so much nostalgic value. I've been in here dozens of times. Sometimes I even go once or twice a week. I've never been disappointed. First of all, their selection is exceptional. They may not have everything, but they have a lot of things you would enjoy adding to your collection - even if you don't know it yet. Any video game or movie lover will find things they love here. I've purchased DVDs, blurays, video games, etc. All of which were in excellent quality at a competitive price. This is HUGE considering there is a huge video game chain store right across the street - which I've only been to once or twice because GamePlay is by far my favorite of the two. Beside the excellent collection, another thing I love about this place is the unpredictability. You never know what you're going to find! My boyfriend and I have made it a habit to stop by GamePlay whenever we are in the area to search for something new to add to our collection. Hunting for something unique or interesting makes the experience even better in my opinion. And last but not least, the employees are absolutely amazing. It is so difficult to find personable, kind, and knowledgeable employees in retail settings nowadays. Every time I have gone in here, the employees are always so quick to greet you and address any questions you have. They also know a lot about the items they carry! I've been into a video game store where one of the employees knew NOTHING about Pokémon - trust me when I say this would never happen here. Their employees are the best. (I know that's frowned upon and if the video game companies found out about this they'd be shut down immediately, but I really don't care) So if you're like me and you're impatient...this is the video game store for you. In my case this game store is a good 30 miles away, ill waste gas and time just to get there pay 3-5dlls over retail and waste more gas more time to get back home. UPDATE 8/1/15 DONT COME AT THIS LOCATION Long story short: So i called to see how many GTA V games they had in stock they told me "We Have Two" i get there around 9:05pm traded in a game because i no longer played it, so everything went smoothly until i got in my car, as a habit i always check used things, the game i purchased "GTA V" from them had a CRACK and sure as hell was worthless, i went back in as soon as i saw it, they told me "It should work give it a try" i declined and wanted a refund (they agreed), but I wasn't sure if i wanted to trade it in for another one game i was thinking about it, when some dip shit guy told me with an attitude "When i put this game in it's place it didn't have a crack, so I'm going to ask u to leave" i was in shock when he said that, and confused, so i flipped and as a upset customer i started using profanity. They forgot the number one rule "THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT" apparently the "MANAGER" didn't deliver!!! Before all this happened they assured they had 2 GTA V games and i asked nicely if i could get another copy and they said "THIS IS THE ONLY COPY WE HAD" if you ask me, this seems like a discrimination case, and they discriminated me for being a Mexican guy with a mexican nephew, i been trying to get a hold of the owner "HENRY" but apparently he is never there. Old playstation games are super cheap, from under a dollar to about seven bucks. They have a big DVD selection also. They have games for PS, PS2, PS3, Gamecube, XBox, Nintendo, PC, DS. I got Primal and I almost got the PC game Who Wants to be a Millionaire, but it was just the box. Turns out another seller sold it to a customer without the box...hmm...I was bummed for about 3.5 seconds. The total would have been under $10. There are a lot of cheap games but like every video game store, there were expensive games also. I was vaguely impressed, just due to the fact that most of the games there were supported by XBox. So if you're looking for anything but XBox I would recommend trying that place out first, but just don't expect everything to be there. It's basically an XBox Games and DVD store, but still worth a visit. read more

A good ol' mom n pop video game store. There are games for so many systems, old ones too. I went recently and they always had the new/recent games in stock. I always preorder my games here because they give you a call back when they're ready to pick up. A call which might be earlier than expected... Gameplay also does tournaments!
