I went to Game Play on the third week of February 2011 with my dad and my little brother Ryan. When I set foot in the store, I was amazed. They have a huge selection of old school NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, PS1, and even some Sega CD and obscure 3DO games! They even have Japanese import games here, and a very big DVD selection! This store totally blows Gamestop away. I will go there whenever I go to Long Beach with my Dad or my Mom. read more

My previous review was a 1 star because I bought a controller that never really worked and when I went to return it, the guy said they could only exchange it. He said if I had further problems, I would need to take it up with the manufacturer. I did in fact have problems with the 2nd controller so I felt pretty helpless because the manufacturer told me to send it to them in China (would cost me easily $25 to do this). Luckily, when I called GamePlay today, a different person answered and when I told her of my situation, said she would let me return it. I was able to leave straight away and get my money back. I like supporting small businesses when they treat their customers with respect. I will continue to buy video games here when I know I won't need to return them. Not going to take a chance on hardware ever again though. read more

Great spot, the peeps behind the desk are cool people. The prices are always fair and they always seem to work with u if ur cool and not an obnoxious customer. It's only a dollar to preorder games. Short of an old-school arcade, this is one of the few places in long beach that reminds me of my childhood. I love gameplay because I can go here and browse the used games, ask questions and get opinions on all the new stuff. It's the way games were meant to be sold. No pressure to get some membership card and their games tend to be slightly cheaper than gamestop. Unless they go out of business, this is the only place I will buy my games. read more

To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about gaming, as I don't game. My fiance and I were driving back to our apartment late at night around 9:45 P.M and got lost on the road being in a new area. My fiance spotted this store and immediately turned in, as he has been looking for game stores in the area. We walked in, surprised that a game store was open so late! GamePlay is open from 10 AM - 10 PM! From what I could observe, the place is very well organized, clean, and easy to find things. They offered a large variety of things including old school games and new games. X-BOX, playstation, and and original X-BOX. The two individuals working behind the counter were very friendly, helpful, and patient...considering we walked in about 10 minutes before their closing time. We stayed at least five to ten minutes after their closing time, and they were really cool about that. I'd say check this place out and see all the cool things they have! read more

i have not been to this store for years so i came to check out their retro sections which is always well stocked and i find out they have lots of them but as a collector n i know the values of games they r all over priced even by ebay or cons. if u come hear to buy retro games or imports stay away from here bc its all over priced u will get better deals online or cons. if u into the newer games then i will be the same as elsewhere. i wont be coming back at all until they match or see the current market for retro games. read more

You can call them with any problem and they will gladly help you with any problems. Sometimes the selection for certain items can be small, but its understandable because they're a small business. Me and my boyfriend are shit video gamers, but we have a lot of fun dueling our friends in party-type challenges and, occasionally, get serious with co-op. Russel was kind and knowledgeable, helping us pick two games: Diablo 3 and Resident Evil 5. He was able to help several customers and answer phone calls all at once in the five minutes we were there. This place is just the hipster younger brother to Game Stop. Pretending to not be some mainstream store and instead an indie alternative. They claim to be fair with their prices and are competitive with Game Stop however, they still buy for a fraction of what the game is worth. Sell them an N64 game like Majora's Mask complete with box, manual, and in great shape you'll get $3.00 and they'll turn around and sell it for $65.00. This goes for all their "classic" games like the SNES, NES, etc. They give you pennies on the dollar and jack up the price. The whole draw of a store like this is to buy a new game or check out a CHEAP retro game selection, which they fail at miserably. Their old games selection is terrible as well offering up dozens of copies of say Madden 95 and maybe an old mario or sonic game.Their new retail games are a couple of dollars cheaper and that's about it. Sales team is just like what you would find at any video game store. They know their games and can understand you clearly but again pricey. While I do support local mom and pop shops whenever I can, these people are nothing special and do not deserve your business more than any other national chain. Want to buy retro? Go to Ebay or Amazon and watch your dollars stretch a lot further. You want to buy new? Go anywhere and the prices are the same. read more

As a shopper, Im sorry to say that Gameplay cannot stand up to mega corporate shops like ebgames/gamestop simply because they consistently lack variety in their used games section, and they lack the resources to have programs like the EDGE card or 2 for 1 specials on a regular basis. But it does have a few strong points. The people are cool, and love talking about video games any time of the day. It is a good place to chill out for an hour with a friend and play the latest releases. I would love to work here, but to be honest I would rather shop at Gamestop where I can browse a lengthy selection of used games, and earn frequent flyer miles. If you are a collector or someone who is interested in owning old console games or imports than this is pretty much the only place to go, but for mainstream gamers like me who are into their PS3 or 360 than youre better off elsewhere. read more

Good place. Got monster hunter and DBFZ early which is nice, although the servers were down. Also you guys complaining about them asking for preorders is stupid. They ask you so they have enough of a game when they get them. If you don't preorder or leave your name you won't get what you want and then you complain even more. The kids want a new game. You get one on Sat and by Mon they have beat it and want another. Then this is the place for you. I always thought my kid was speaking another language, as it turns out HE IS, but here at Game Play they speak it as well. They have reasonable prices on used games, new games are a little higher than the mega stores (target, walmart), but they don't seem to sell out of hot new games as fast either so it's a trade off. They have regular sales of buy two get one free. They don't pay much on trade in's, but none of the stores out there do. We have always had FANTASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE! I was looking for a very out dated Play Station game and they didn't have it, but took our number and actually called us when they go it in, (we are talking an old game folks, bugs' life, couldn't find it any where!). They will ever resurface your scratched game (or music, or dvd), 1st one is free, and after that it's $1, unless you are a "regular" face then they will do a few of them before they charge you (if at all). There is a very old fashioned mom and pop type feel to this store, that makes my family feel very comfortable shopping here. It's always my 1st stop. read more

I went in to Game Play with high expectations and walked right out immediately with disappointment. The prices were much higher than any store I have ever been in. Really 29.00 for a used Sega Saturn controller? I hate shopping on the Bay for retro game stuff but you can get a much better at other places. I would seek out a different store for all your video needs even movies, 89.00 for a used copy of the Star Wars Saga? On the upside the staff was great and immediately asked me if they could help me. My husband took me here and I just love it! (He says it's like a mom and pop shop) They have so many movies to choose from and I'm not sure if they still have a sale because I bought 10 dvds for $20 about three weeks ago and it was like a little treasure hunt for me! Unfortunately, I called this company and reserved a imported Japanese game. The associate told me there's only one copy left in another store, but he'll transfer it to the long beach store the next day. He also said he will check on the other three games I wanted and call me in a few hours. I waited a day -- nothing. I called them back the 2nd day, and no body was aware of any games being transferred. I left them another message on Facebook -- no response. Horrible service and they just don't care. I love Gameplay because it allows me to shop for all of those games that I grew up with by browsing through them. I'm sure they know this, but having all of those games out on display for customers to browse through lets them see games that they forgot about and would want (It works on me). Unfortunately it can be a little expensive, especially on those popular or rare games, but hey they have to stay in business. I hope this place never goes away and I hope there are more stores like it in the near future. read more
