I've been coming to here for over 10 years- the food quality is decent and remains consistent. However, I usually just order through grubhub. Two reasons for this; The water/ice provided in the restaurant smells like fish / wet dog and it's smelled like this since I've been going to Galaxy. When I eat in the restaurant, I bring my own water so I don't have to drink theirs- it literally makes me gag. Second reason is the music played in the restaurant is dreadful... I'm not sure what they're trying to prove by playing the same 4 songs on repeat. I literally feel like I'm stuck in the 1950s and not in the good way. I get what they're trying to do with the atmosphere, but please play something more contemporary! When I'm debating where to eat, I often choose other restaurants over Galaxy because the music is so bad. Anyways, remove those two reasons from the equation and the place is decent. 3/5 stars until they improve. ---------------Edit------------ I've spent thousands here over the years and order most of the same item but, when I received my order cold today, I was told that the order is supposed to come out cold. I usually stop at Subway before heading to work, but today Subway was closed. I was bummed out about this until I looked right next door and popped my head into Galaxy Café. I guess I must be slightly biased against eateries with café in their name because I do not frequent any cafes. However, I was intrigued the second I walked in. It is modern and fresh feeling with hipstery-type staff that greet you upon entering. If they had a patio, I would say that they are VERY Austin. What does make them Austin-y is the menu. SO many gluten free options! I don't have a reason to go gluten free and I'll be honest with you, I like bread...all breads. So, I tried the mushroom swiss burger with black beans, delicious. I'm so glad I didn't go to Subway today and tried something new. I also had the Galaxy iced coffee with sugar. I was hyped up for sure. I think I'll stick with the press next time. Went Zocalo and Galaxy at the same night. At Galaxy, it even has Zocalo's menu. The street is smelly walking from Zocalo to Galaxy. It seems they all put the big trash dumper along the street. Hard to describe the design of Galaxy. Is that 70's style? So many people brag about their sweet potato fries, we tried that too. It's too oily for me. The food is typical American style. Came here on foot (as my friend lives a few blocks down) during the weekend for an early brunch. The place is definitely trendy and modern. It's nice that it is surrounded by a neighborhood. I ordered migas and they were just okay. But my friend had the strawberry french toast on wheat and those were AMAZING! Should try next time you have a craving for french toast. This was a very pleasant discovery. Awesome for the all-too-common "I'm hungover feed me" Sunday brunch. The place has a really nice atmosphere, outdoor seating and the food is pretty good. I had the migas, and while they were not the best migas I've had (I've had very good migas in my time) they were tasty and filling. I wanted to try several items in the menu so rest assured I'll be coming back for more. BTW It's owned by the same people as Zocalo, which is the Mexican version of this place, and you should try that one too, even though it has a more fast-food feeling to it. read more

My family regularly eats at Galaxy Cafe as it is one of our favorites since they have so many healthy options. My favorite is the Galaxy Buddha bowl and my wife always gets the Grilled Skirt Steak With Chimichurri Sauce. I was drawn to the Decors and semi-industrial feeling that Galaxy Cafe presented. Very cozy but modern and it felt very feminine somehow. I can totally see bunch of girls here hanging out on weekends like gossip girls. Hah. The girls were extremely helpful and friendly! Food was average. Mushroom Swiss burger was dry and the mushroom was not melted in the cheese, thought that was odd. Fresh mozzarella sandwich was decent, the mozzarella was thick! We got breakfast here twice while staying at an airbnb in Clarksville. I got the breakfast wrap both times and it was healthy and filling. The service was great. I really enjoy Galaxy Cafe! The place is very good to be at, the people that work there were very friendly and helpful. I ordered an bowl, with rise, meat, vegetables and with a great sauce. It's great that Steiner Ranch finally has a cafe/diner with decent food. Especially one that's open for breakfast. Truth be told, I have mixed feelings about this place. What they do make uses quality ingredients and tastes good but their menu is really limited, especially for breakfast. All of their egg options are either scrambled or in a quiche. Where's the omelet? Where's the 2 eggs your way? I'd give the place a 4th star if there were more options on the menu. The other knock I have on it is that it's a little more than I would normally pay for a breakfast of the same portion/quality. If there were more flexibility in the menu, I probably wouldn't mind so much. Would I go back? Sure, the food is decent enough and it's only a mile up the road (super close by Steiner Ranch standards). Is it a place I would choose as a go-to for breakfast if convenience were not a factor? Decent food with gluten free options, but rather expensive for what we got. Ordered mushroom Swiss burger on gf bun but without cheese. They brought it with cheese. Luckily I had some lactaid pills because it was slow coming in the first place and I didn't want my family to wait while they redid mine. Bun fell apart not halfway through my burger cuz I guess the mushroom made it soggy. Mushroom were chunks not slices, but tasty enough. Daughters Turkey burger was tasty though, and mom's avocado Turkey looked ok. It was fine, but not worth the $60 (including tip) for the three of us. Not bad, just overpriced for the quality. I'm a big fan of the Galaxy Cafe. They just produce great food, good coffee, and it's a nice environment to brunch at on a Sunday morning. In my opinion, the best section of their menu are the breakfasty items (omlets, waffles, etc.), although I have not been disappointed by their lunch and dinner either. They also offer mimosas to start off a day of heavy drinking right. If I had one negative it would be that their portions are kind of small, but maybe I am too hungry for them. However since most of their menu is relatively healthy this would be a good place to come if you were watching you waist. Galaxy is just a solid place to have brunch, hang out and study, or grab another quick meal. Also if you have a 'Go Local Austin' card they throw in a free coffee, and who couldn't use a free coffee. read more

He also gave us some historical facts and that he kept most of the front quai-intact. (The location) a laundry mat from many decades and also I think he mention a relation with the first whole food market. Nice outdoor seating and quiet street to relax, like most in Austin. Stuffed friggen portobello mushroom. wow. I've been to this place twice and both times I have done takeout, so I can only attest to the quality of the food, which is excellent. The first time I grabbed the portobello wrap - it was amazing. Fresh lettuce, goat cheese, portobello, pesto sauce, now i'm hungry... The second time I got the stuffed portobello, which appeared to be deep fried in some delicious bread crumbs, then stuffed with spinach and some other goodness. It came with a side of rice pilaf, which was unique in the fact that the pilaf was quite large compared to what I have eaten before. Excellent. The service seems pretty good and the food is prepared really fast (under 10 minutes for my take out orders). I'm going to make this a go-to place for when I'm in this neck of the woods. Word to the wise, this place gets packed at night. I went last night and had to park on the street with a couple dozen other cars. If your own intestines have forsaken you and you find yourself in need of a gluten-free meal, I highly recommend this place! They have a dedicated gluten free menu that isn't just the regular menu minus all the delicious pastas and sandwiches (yeah, we're all on to you Carrabas, et al!!). They have gf buns, bread, pasta, tortillas, and beer (Omission). I must admit, I always seem to get the same thing: The G-Free Mozzarella Sandwich (add Avocado) with a side of fries and a side of their garden ranch dressing for dipping. So good. I also enjoy a liquid breakfast there. Their french press coffee is tasty and they serve it with 3 addictive chocolate covered coffee beans. The staff is super nice and I have never felt like they were silently cursing me for opening up my laptop and doing my thing on their free WiFi during off-peak hours. read more

I'm surprised by the "bad" reviews. Those reviewers must have some amazing lunch places that I don't know about. While Galaxy Cafe isn't fine dining or gourmet food, it's tasty healthy quick eats for lunch. Also they have drink options so it could be a good place for an afternoon happy hour (although it is a restaurant and not a bar). This place gets 6 stars for speed. My food seems to materialize out of thin air right after I place the order. I LOVE the wraps with tomato soup. The veggie and fish ones are my favorites. I also love that they have 3 choices of fresh delicious iced tea to choose from. The Buddha bowl is very basic. Not bad, just simple healthy ingredients without much flair or unique flavors. I was also not a fan of the homemade veggie burger at all. Too soft. It had a very homemade flavor, so it's probably someone's thing. One downside is that it gets crowded at the lunch hour and once I couldn't find a place to sit and had to sit outside when the weather was less than adequate (no heaters). A fairly uncreative menu is the only knock against Galaxy (Wraps, sandwiches, burgers). Reviewing the menu, the most creativity can be found in Galaxy's salads: Ahi Tuna Salad, Thai Steak Salad, Shrimp Salad, etc. Yet despite a lack of originality, the ingredients they use are quality and the food still tastes good. Other oddities about Galaxy: diners review the menu at the restaurant entrance before ordering at the counter; a self-serve drink station; no wait staff but staff does run out your food from the kitchen and roams around cleaning tables. Ryan Bond sent a quote that had charges for the side items even though (2) should be included with each sandwich/wrap. Before covid this restaurant went downhill over a period of years. I would venture to say that they got a little too successful and complacent. The experience shrank in quality and service. What was once 6 shrimp turned into five kinda thing. Not just that, but overall quality of food and prep. If you are a new customer you wouldn't know this. The staff is SO nice, but the owner was downright horrible. If the owner is not around, by all means, the staff is lovely, but on the off chance that the owner might stop by, if you have a dog, have a disability or know anyone with a disability or if you are from a state other than Texas, this may not be a safe environment for you to dine. As an out of state woman with a disability and a properly trained, legally licensed and registered service animal, I was following all of the ADA requirements, which can be found here: https://www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.pdf and my animal was silently under perfect control as I sat quietly eating my meal. I would have felt receptive had he simply requested o move myself outside (although technically that would have been illegal to do), but instead, I experienced the harsh reality of discrimination from the owner who addressed me angrily and suddenly while I was sitting quietly enjoying my meal. He came and angrily told me off, said very rude and downright mean things to me. I tried to converse with openness, as I was open to learning if there were Texas requirements other than the federal ones about which I perhaps was unaware. But no, I am in compliance with ADA regulations and was very open and kind in my communication. He continued to ask invasive questions which are illegal to ask and just be extremely angry and rude to me. I'm grateful to the manager and the kind man who took my order. They genuinely seemed to care about me when they saw I was crying, and they refunded my meal. If you are a Texan white male with no disabilities, by all means, this place is great. Moved into the neighborhood and couldn't wait to check Galaxy Cafe out. Friend in town so we went up there the first night for dinner. Have to say things started off wrong with the blank stare and less than helpful attitude from the cashier. Had a couple of questions and got monotone responses at best. No one in line around us so not like they were busy helping other people. I ordered the veggie buddha bowl with the lemon tahini sauce on the side. My friend ordered their pesto alfredo. The veggie bowl was good but wasn't a fan of the sauce so was glad I got it on the side. Veggies cooked well and tasty. My friend, who is about the most laid back person ever, wasn't so lucky with the pasta. The pasta itself was cooked well, but the sauce was barely noticeable and he could hardly taste the flavor. You could see the pasta was pretty naked. Wasn't a great experience, but in talking to some neighbors they suggested we give them a shot for breakfast. Against better judgement, went in despite there being lots of options around the area. My friend got a breakfast wrap and the wrap itself was dried out and stale. Eggs and other items were well made. Sadly the only vegan option I had was oatmeal so got that with strawberries. The oatmeal was a mushy mess and I ended up not eating it. Gave the place 2 star because the buddha bowl was good, but not worth the risk of trying anything else. Sadly will keep looking for my neighborhood joint. read more

This place gives some super awesome French toast. We came here as soon as they opened up and the ambience was really cozy, perfect for the cold morning. The scrambled eggs are really good, the eggs were perfectly cooked and not at all spicy. They bring the food to your table but you'll have to get the water and cutlery yourself and order at the counter. read more

When my Favor driver brought me someone else's meal and gave mine to them, I went in person to Galaxy Cafe to bring back the wrong lunch and see about getting what I'd originally ordered. I thought maybe they'd have me pay for it and ask me to recoup my money through Favor customer service, but no! The people at Galaxy Cafe were fantastic. They remade my meal, didn't charge me and threw in a free cookie for my troubles. And it wasn't even their fault! In addition to the great service, I always love the food here. My go-to is the fish wrap on spinach with a side of mac & cheese. The mac & cheese is so creamy and delicious! I also love their Zocalo Buddha Bowl. Healthy and tasty at the same time. read more

Galaxy Café offers a simple, no frills but simple good food and quick service dining experience. You show up and order at the front. They give your cups and utensils, your number, and off you go. The food comes out surprisingly quick and the wait staff is quick to take care of your needs. We had a large group but were able to find tables in the rear even on a busy Saturday morning. I ordered the Denver scramble and subbed fruit for the bread. I loved the flavor of the potatoes and thought the cup of fruit was better quality than the usual cup of fruit. The Denver scramble was exactly what you would expect but it was a good amount of food. They have some unique hot sauces that are locally made that are worth trying as well.
