Nothing special but not bad. Carne Adovoda: I prefer Asada but I uess Adovoda is the main thing in New Mexico Chicken Soft Taco: The chicken wasn't that good. The prices on food was reasonable, but good golly Miss Molly you can go broke on the OJ!!!! Thank goodness we only ordered one because it was $6 for a small glass!!!! I would go back. This place used to be better. I got the Huevos Rancheros. It was watery. There was water on my plate. I have no idea why. The eggs were very runny even though I asked for over medium. There was a large piece of egg shell in the eggs. Fortunately I was done trying to eat it by then so I didn't bite into it. Located right across the street from the University of New Mexico, throngs of people were in line on the Sunday I ate here. Frontier uses a counter service - you line up, someone directs you to a cashier, and you pick your food up with when your number appears on the digital board. The workers have the process down to a science so everything moves quickly. New Mexican cuisine boasts of this green chile stew, so everything here has the option of being doused in it. My sister and I shared the following: -carne adovada burrito topped with red sauce ($2.25) -chicken enchiladas topped with lettuce, tomato, cheese, onion, and green chile stew. comes with rice and beans + a flour tortilla ($8.40) -green chile cheeseburger which comes with salad dressing, tomatoes, pickles, onions, and lettuce (meal: $7.75) Carne adovada is the New Mexican version of pulled pork simmered in a tomatillo sauce. It's salty. Rolled in a burrito and topped with extra red sauce, this was very hard for me to eat without the aid of rice or beans to counter the saltiness. My sister experienced the same thing with her chicken enchiladas. Because they use shredded chicken in the enchiladas, it becomes too watery and breaks the tortilla apart. This and the green chile sauce made it a soggy mess. The best thing we ate was the green chile cheeseburger. The green chile was a nice complement to the patty and bun. Well, needless to say, I am not a fan of New Mexican cuisine. It lies somewhere between Americanized Mexican food, but not quite with the Southwestern addition of green and red chile sauce/stew. Despite it not being palatable to my liking, I get it. Why else would throngs of people - not just students, but elderly people, teenagers, and families - make this their dining destination on a Sunday? A friend recommended checking out Frontier Restaurant when we made a trip to ABQ. It's right across from campus so it's a popular spot for students. Really, it's a popular spot for all as it was packed and it's a huge restaurant. You order at the counter and then they call you when your food's ready. The menu consists of a mix of New Mexican food and classic American food. They're also known for their sweet rolls and even have shirts about them. We went with two tacos, one beef and one chicken, a side of fries, and a sweet roll. Some good and some bad. The tacos were large but they were your standard taco meat tacos. I'm not the biggest fan of ground meat so I prefer tacos that have sliced meat rather than ground. They also gave us two beef tacos instead of one beef and one chicken as we ordered and was indicated on the receipt. While we weren't impressed with the tacos, the fries were nice and crispy. The sweet roll was also good and you can ask them to make it after you finish your main course as they're served warm. read more

Hubby and I flew in late from Los Angeles and was hangry. There's nothing open past 11 pm in the area of Albuquerque we were staying in so we had to Yelp in order to find a spot. We found this place was open pretty late (figures, because it's right next to the university). We didn't stay, we just ordered to go because husband and I were both already agitatedly hangry. This place is huge btw. You have to make your way to the front to order. I got the fiesta burger with fries and a fountain drink. Joel got the beef taco. It took maybe 10 minutes for us to get our food. We got home at around midnight. I ended up falling asleep and not even touching my burger. As I was dozing off, I can hear Joel slowly unwrapping the beef taco. In the morning, when I woke up, I saw the wrapper on my side table, crumbled up. He said it was more like a burrito. It was huge! He said it was delicious. He didn't say it, but I think he may want to go back. I ended up sharing my burger with him for breakfast. Surprisingly, still good, even if it was cold. French fries... not so much. The green chile had a nice spicy kick, but it didn't overpower the burger. Definitely a go-to place if we come back to Albuquerque! read more

Not quite worth the hype. The enchiladas were mediocre compared to the rest of the city. Tacos were overpriced versions of what you could get at Taco Bell, and instead of sopapillas, Frontier just serves warm flour tortillas. Pretty disappointing for New Mexico. While the Sweet Rolls are a local favorite, they greatly disappointed me. They were not warm, and the glaze on top seemed pointless. I read about Frontier's famous cinnamon rolls on a must eat in Albuquerque list and after this visit, I fully support their place on the list. It was gooey and buttery and I loved that it wasn't smothered in icing because it was sweet enough as is. I suppose I could have finished the roll in one sitting but I was afraid of how many calories I'd be consuming for one meal so I split it in two and the second half reheated perfectly. It was so good that I seriously considered buying the six pack to go but thought that it would be smarter to skip the indulgence. My boyfriend and his brother chose the vegetarian breakfast burritos and completely smothered them in green chile. His brother thought it was so good that he even sipped some straight out of the cup! Apparently, you're allowed to consume as much green chile as you want while on the premise but they limit the amount that you can take to go so they wanted to eat their burritos in the crowded restaurant. Luckily, we were able to snag a table on a Sunday morning but it was packed. The restaurant is far from fancy but has a charming yet grungy vibe. Had both brunch and dinner here. It is that good. If you are in ABQ and haven't been to Frontier, you are missing out on an experience. Located right opposite to the main entrance to UNM, this is a go to place for most of the University people and locals around. Food: Breakfast burrito is this amazing combination of hashbrown, eggs and cheddar, with some green chile thrown in, and rolled into the softest tortilla. Slather it with some of the hot salsa available in a cauldron, and you are set. We also got some freshly squeezed orange juice, it was the best I have ever had in the US. At dinner, I went for a 1/2 order of enchiladas with chicken, cheese, onion wrapped in the freshest and softest flour tortilla, sides of lettuce, tomato, and rice, and topped off with a half & half of both red and green chile. I liked the red chile better, but FYI it's spicy. while you are at it, try the french fries. I don't know how, but it is definitely a gem. My husband went for the Frontier burrito, which was ginormous but amazing. The food was always so fresh and tasteful. I swear, if I was living there I would be here for every meal. 5/5 Interior: It has a very interesting decor, with paintings hanging all around. And the restaurant runs for over a block with four or five large dining areas. You get your food from the counter and walk up to an empty table. It was buzzing with people both the times we went there. I would probably steer clear of the restrooms though, it can definitely do with a bit of upgrade and maintenance. 4/5 Service: Amazing! When ordering the server at the counter asked us if we were sure about the orange juice as it had gone a bit tart and offered us a bit to taste. I was amazed. Generally, doesn't matter what the flavor is, they just give it. Even tart, it was evident the juice was fresh and tasty, so we went with it. The people there are always smiling and very welcoming. There's always multiple cleaning crew ensuring the tables are cleared off as soon as they are emptied. I was amazed. 5/5 Price: Nothing can beat the price here. The breakfast burritos were like 6.50, OJ was a bit pricey at 3.25, but u must get the tortillas separately. They are worth every penny.
