I had guests in last week and we ordered from Froggies for the group of us. We got "The Full Frog" for 4 and a smoked Chicken Wrap. The Catfish was the best thing of the bunch and I cannot say enough about it. Thinly breaded with a great tasting breading and huge filets (thick) of great catfish! The whole group of us agreed on that fact. The chicken wasn't really smokey, but it was juicy which was great. The ribs were very dry, but great flavor. BBQ and Brisket were both fantastic. The variety of sauses was greatly appreciated and enough for all of us. As sides the Coleslaw was acceptable (not remarkable). The fries were fantastic (thick cut with herbs & spices). The smoked chicken wrap was good for the person that ordered it. Nothing more on that. Overall, as a delivery order, this was great for a large group. We even had left overs for the next day. Overpriced and inconsistent. Portions are weak. Not worth the price. The Coke isn't Coke! It's an off brand soda but says coke on their menu. For someone that grew up around here it didn't take more than one sip to know. Then the waitress confirmed. Said it's a knockoff. Makes me wonder what else they're passing off as name brand products. Seems like they nickle and dime customers. Lots of frequent staff turnover which is usually an indication of poor leadership. Not surprising because the owner often gets drunk and obnoxious. 9/12/20 - Our first visit today @1315. Staff were friendly and courteous, hence two stars. Ambience: Inviting if you like the rustic bar-Beach theme. A quick walk around revealed sticky floors...hmmm! It was clear they support social distancing by myriad COVID-19 procedures signage. Food: very disappointing. We ordered, to go, The Full Frog for two...Brisket, Ribs, Pull Pork were dry and extremely salty; meat tasted three days old just heated and slathered in BBQ sauce. Brisket was dry and brittle; sweet potato hash was half cooked and not eatable. Onion Tangier's were too salty and mostly batter and few onions... Cost: $39.03 + 3.5% fee for credit card use came to $40.40... Catfish was the only items served straight out the oven. Brisket, Ribs, Pork and Chicken were not...BRPC should have been same as our catfish. Happy to support local businesses, however, we believe Froggies missed the mark by a wide margin on this one. P.s. Based on previous reviews, I suspect our experience was an anomaly. Nevertheless, not the experience we hoped for. I do hope Management/Ownership conduct an assessment of service and meals provided to its patrons during this COVID-pandemic. This was the second time I have came to froggies. The 1st time was just by luck and enjoyed the food, service, amd entertainment. The 2nd time was by choice and still was the same as the 1st time. I had the fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese and Edwards ham. This was delish! My entree was the full frog and like itbsays I was full. I didn't even finish half. It came with catfish, chicken, pulled pork, ribs, and brisket with 2 sides and cornbread. I was impressed with it all. This was some of best bbq I've had in the area. Went to Froggies last night for the first time. The place is very casual, rustic and looked like lots of locals. Four of us had dinner, Cubano sandwich, two Reubens and BBQ ribs. Also had to try the Frog legs. The ribs were pretty good, nice smoked flavor, kind of dry in places, but overall pretty good. The Reuben sandwiches were another story. My wife said she'd never had one that bad! If the bread was toasted, it wasn't much. The sauerkraut made the bread mushy and the meat was tough and pretty fatty. The Cubano was good. And I guess you have to be a fan of frog legs because I didn't care for them, didn't taste enough like chicken! The waitress looked like she was taking care of almost all the tables, so she was hustling and trying hard. She did a good job & was very nice, so I'd give her A for effort. But they could use more help in that area. The blues band started as we were about to leave, they sounded good but if you were there to have a lot of conversation, it would have been hard to hear. So overall I'd give the place an OK rating. Food could have been better, the service was very good and the music looked like it would have been good if you were there for that. This review is a draft I've been sitting on since mid-February. I took mom to lunch here on a Tuesday afternoon which was the 16th. I remember that clearly because it was the day the snow started to come down. Anyway Mom and a friend of hers like to come here so I figured I'd give it a try. This building has been several restaurants over the years and is clearly showing it's age inside and out. We grabbed a booth right inside the front door and a waiter/bartender came over and gave us some menus. The place was about a quarter full and he appeared to be the only one working besides someone in the kitchen. Much to my surprise when the waiter/bartender came back Mom ordered a margarita. I had a Coke. I said "Mom don't you think it's a little bit early for a drink?" to which she replied "The sun's over the yardarm somewhere in the world". Right on Mom! We placed our food orders and started to wait. Lunch was pretty slow coming out and while we were waiting the place also started to fill up. I guess a lot of people had the day off due to the inbound snow. Eventually the food came to the table. Mom and I split a chicken quesadilla for the appetizer. She had a chicken salad wrap for lunch and I opted for a bacon cheeseburger. Unfortunately my bacon & cheese was missing and I had to flag the server down. He apologized and got that taken care of right away. He was hoofing it and I give him credit. Taking care of a entire floor while you're the only person out there isn't the easiest job int he world by far. The snow was starting to dust outside and we finished our meals up. As between a bar with barbecue and a barbecue place with a bar, I would definitely say a bar with barbecue. We went to hear some live music after the covid winter (any live music). We were seated at a tiny table between the bar and a door beneath a television. It was packed as you would expect on a weekend. The service was slow, but the server was doing her best and very nice. The food was very disappointing and a little overpriced. I appreciated that they take reservations and the hostess was very pleasant. The worst part of the evening was the entertainment. We scurried out as soon as we finished our food to escape the music we were so desperately seeking. If you are looking for a bar with some decent food and iffy music, it is fine, but I would look elsewhere for a dining experience. read more

I've been here twice now. First time: came in the winter on a Saturday early evening I believe. It was pretty empty from what I recall but we sat in the restaurant area. They were pretty accommodating, exchanging out a hamburger for chicken on one of their hamburger entrees. It was average, nothing special. I believe I had the mushroom onion sandwich. Nothing to complain about but nothing to write home about either. I do remember it was very loud in the bar area which made it difficult to chat even in the sit down area. I just went last night again (Sunday in the summer). It was a lot more busy than last time. They had live music but I found it more annoying and unattractive then anything. It was also pretty warm inside, didn't seem like they had air conditioning, just fans, and it was in the 90s today. We sat outside because honestly it felt stuffy and loud inside. I was very disappointed that they A) do not have a separate non smoking section outside (we're by the beach so outdoor seating is a staple yet most places have a separate smoking area) and B) there was no lanterns/torches to keep the bugs away. In this area mosquitos are horrendous so to have an outdoor area and no attempt to even remotely keep the mosquitos away was disappointing (I was eaten alive outside). And the smokers were surrounding our table so all throughout dinner we had smoke blown our direction. My boyfriend ordered a beer. They were out. He ordered another beer. The keg blew. He ordered a third beer, they were out. Finally his fourth beer order he got. I think they should have given some sort of discount seeing as their ability to keep their taps available was limited, he had to go for his fourth choice. Alas, they did not. I got a mango pineapple mixed drink. It was pretty good. We ordered the fajita for two meal. They were again accommodating and allowed us to get steak and shrimp (they only had listed shrimp and scallop combo or chicken and steak combo). When it arrived I already recognized that what was in front of us was NOT enough for two people. Our friend that was with us ordered the shrimp and scallop fajita for one and it looked like we had pretty much the same portions he did, just with 6 tortillas instead of 3. I wasn't wrong. We put one strip of steak and one shrimp on each tortilla, we still had 2 fajitas left and no more meat/seafood left. I was very disappointed. We paid $25 and got 4.5 tortillas worth of food. The food was also bland. It's pretty difficult to mess up fajitas. The shrimp was fine, vegetables very limited and super thinly sliced. The steak was overcooked and very tough. All in all I wouldn't say this place is horrible. I just won't be going there again. The food is either average at best or bland, nondescript, and not enough. The clientele seems to be a lot of people in their late 40s who are pretending to be hard core bikers. There was a lot of unregulated cursing in the dining area, very distasteful. I understand on a Friday or Saturday night that happening, I'm still in my 20s, but going around 7p on a Sunday, I wanted to relax, not cringe with the loud music (which we still had to talk over) and the less than savory clientele. In a previous life, Froggie's was a nondescript Microwave Mexican joint that had a fairly decent lunchtime following. I never bothered stopping in after 5PM, even though the layout of the place had some serious potential. Then Froggie's Cantina By The Bay was born. Good call. In my book, this is the quintessential 'Bay Locals' joint. Local music, local beers on tap, everything on the menu made to order. Not that the random tourist wouldn't be welcome, but it is more than likely that the locals would gently point them further down Shore Drive toward the Ocean and the rest of their friends with out of state license plates. But I digress. The menu is utilitarian. That sounds harsh but it isn't meant that way. This is a familiar menu where you will find something to satisfy. The Big Ol' Burrito was a pleasant surprise on the last visit, it has just the right amount of kick and is a generous portion. The rest of the menu is your usual selection of sandwiches, burgers, seafood, steaks, etc. As well, there are daily/nightly specials printed on the wall and a chef's selection of the day (usually two) that are handed to you as an additional menu. So while you won't find anything that is set on fire table side, you will find something tasty and completely in line with the locals nature of Froggie's. On the weekends, there is a band for your dining and dancing pleasure. Even though the place isn't huge, the volume from the music never overwhelms your conversations at the bar. Froggie's has become a regular stop for some of the area's finest musicians, so stop talking and give a listen, you won't be disappointed. Speaking of conversation, you can easily meet new friends at the bar. The vibe is casual, relaxed, and non-pretentious. So let's recap. shall we? I stopped in Friday around 7:30 or 8:00 and was told they had switched to the late night menu already and half of that menu wasn't available so I left. I decided to try again tonight a little earlier in hopes that the full menu was available. I grabbed a seat at the bar and there was a couple a few seats down, who I ended up finding out were actually the owners. I don't know what set the woman off, but she started flailing her arms and raising her voice about something. She had what looked like a few not-so-nice words with a female server, and then a few minutes later she started questioning and yelling at the young girl who was the hostess, telling her that she should know her husband has been drinking (this girl is somehow responsible for keeping tabs on what an owner has been doing?!) and when they are in the building they are not on the clock and are not to be asked any questions. I'm sorry, WHAT? As a business owner myself, it is unacceptable to speak to employees like that, much less in front of customers! Perhaps they need to spend less time drinking at the bar they own and more time learning how to appreciate the employees that are interacting and building relationships with the customers that keep them in business. Froggies Cantina sits near the Lesner Bridge overlooking Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach. (Not on the water*) Parking is a bit limited especially during the summer months because of beach-goers but the Shore Drive location is prime real estate. This place is spacious and has plenty of room for parties with two full bars, patios, and large dining areas. Lots of local musical artists and clientele! They offer daily food and drink specials and a decent beer selection. For the low prices, the food is surprisingly tasty and the service has always been accommodating! There is one word that describes it... understaffed. Their girls are workin' hard... but the dining room is relatively large & spread out, and add the patio onto all of that... and the service starts to slip. We saw people getting their own menus and seating themselves after standing in the doorway for a while, looking around like those new people who just joined the party but recognize anyone there. Also I saw some guys with their drinks & silverware in hand tell the not-their-waitress lady that they were going to move outside, and "if that's okay"... and she replied "of course, I'll let your waitress know". Well like I said, the place is quite large, and not-their-waitress never crossed paths with their-actual-waitress... so their-actual-waitress served their food to an empty table... with no silverware... and no drinks... and no people. It was less 2 minutes later that not-their-waitress noticed their food all by their lonesome at an empty table, gave it a "huh? what happened here?" look... and soon after their-actual-waitress picked up their food and brought it outside. Oh, and it also doesn't help that the patio is 100% separate from the inside without any windows for the waitstaff to easily keep an eye on their outdoor patrons. So yeah, crisis averted... but the solution is easy - more staff. Good think my husband & I are freakishly early-bird people anyway, and this place opens @ 7am... our solution? We ordered their crushes and they both tasted like hand sanitizer no flavor what so ever, not to mention that they were very overpriced like everything else in this restaurant. Kate the bartender was wonderful. They remodeled about five months ago and it looks nice. Menu is eclectic, so you can actually get more than just Mexican food. The special scallop bruschetta was pretty darn tasty as the fish tacos, made white fried fish bites, cabbage, onions, cheese, and sriracha. We recently tried Froggies for dinner. The Micro Trio app is a great way to sample the BBQ meats. Got a good amount of each of three different smoked meats - pulled port, ribs and brisket. The smoked flavor permeated the meat making everything very enjoyable, although the brisket was a bit dry for my wife's taste. A little sauce definitely makes that a non-issue and the sauces were outstanding. We also got three sandwiches - the Cuban which was excellent and very plentiful for sure; the Rueben was also excellent. Wish we had got the extra meat on it as that would have made it unbelievable; and the brisket sandwich which my son said had too much dressing on it to make it easy to eat. We told the waitress about the issue and she actually told the manager who removed it from our bill! Had a bit of an issue with the sides as the fries were kind of cold and the onion rings or straws were burnt. Really loved that they had live music literally every night. That was a real treat. Not a bad price point for bbq, but we had a few issues. Service was stellar, she couldn't have been better. My kid is a Mac & cheese aficionado and she loved it, as well as the mashed potatoes. She said they're both great. The brisket was tasty, but a touch cold. My wife got the half chicken, it came out cold. Not "not hot" but cold to the touch. We sent it back and found out they forgot to turn on the steamer trays. We got another half chicken... that was warmish. My wife wouldn't eat it. I came in for power hour. Pete at the bar is super cool. He makes sure that all of the patrons are taken care of. I like sitting at the bar on the left side. I didn't realize there was a bar on the right until tonight! They have all kinds of weekly night specials. The atmosphere is casual and super chill. I really feel comfortable being here. Ok so I went there on a Sunday night just to get out of the house and hear some music. I heard there was going to be a band there and drink specials. When I got there parking was almost impossible. After finding a spot, my bf and I walked in and saw the place was slammed with people. Everyone there was 60+ This wasn't really an issue, just not what I expected. I assume they were all there for that specific band. The music was ok, pretty old, the service was great and the food was ok. I had a chicken quesadilla and my bf had chicken nachos. This place was awful. Went here for dinner friday night with daughter. We came in around 8pm and were seated right away. However, it took the waitress about 20 minutes to come and take our order. I ordered chicken nachos and my daughter ordered a steak with mashed potatoes. The Nachos were torillas chips with a pretty nasty looking cheese on top, with about 3 pieces of chicken in the whole dish. The cheese was rock hard when it got to the table. It was awful. This was maybe the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. It took twenty minutes to get a drink on the table- waitress only brought one glass of water. We ended up going out to the car to get a bottle because she never came back. After she asked if we needed menus twice and still didn't bring them we went inside to get them ourselves. Froggies Cantina was named La Casa Rana Baja - the same owners and cooks are there (thank goodness). I just got to La Casa Rana Baja Grill and enjoyed it very much. The waitress was great. I ordered the Cubano Sandwich and it was fantastic!! They make their own spicy pickles and are great on that sandwich. My son had the Veggie Tostados and they were beautiful and loaded with fresh veggies and were delicious. I am sure looking forward to returning back here for more of that great grub. We went inside and was told a waitress would be right out so we waited approximately 10-15 min. went back inside and I asked the bartender if we should order inside or out he said up to us so I said outside. We went back out and waited another 5 min and no one ever came out to take out order so we left.I'm not sure if it's new ownership but we used to go there all the time and the last couple of tome the service was the worst. This place has an amazing atmosphere, went on Saturday night and there was a great live band, and it really just felt like a big family get together. Not to mention, the food was amazing. I have so many great things to say about Froggies. Staff: sarah was so so nice. Not sure of the young hostesses name but she was so friendly as well. Fred is a great guy also. We felt so welcomed and had so much fun. Decor: the decorations are really cool. They have lots of authentic sea glass artwork and frogs everywhere! The music stage is really cool too, nice lighting and a cool looking stage! Food: i had the tuna bites app. They were really large sized pieces of tuna. Great flavor! Cooked perfectly. Food is decent, haven't had a lot of the items in the menu ad I loveee the chips and guacamole so I end up eating them every time I go there. Also, poker night is a must! Tuesdays at 7pm and Sundays in the afternoon. Super fun!! Wish I still had the schedule to go to poker night but as soon as I have will definitely be back! DINNER: My boyfriend, dog (Xena), and I went in for dinner on August 23, 2014. The service was absolutely wonderful. We sat on the patio because we had our dog with us and the hostess immediately replaced the water in the doggie water bowl with fresh water. We had barely finished sitting down and were greeted by Jeff Ayers (who i believe is the manager). Mr. Ayers came out and greeted Xena and gave her a doggie treat. That was a pleasant surprise :) Then we were greeted by our waitress, Jennifer, who was also very friendly towards Xena and extremely helpful to my boyfriend and I when making our food selections. Everything Jennifer suggested was delicious. For appetizer we had the lumpia and they can out fast and fresh. I had the charbroiled chicken breast with mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. My Boyfriend had the full rack of ribs with sauteed spinach and mac and cheese. The ribs were so soft and melted right off the bones. The food was so good! We also had alcoholic drinks that were fantastic!! Jennifer was very attentive and sweet. Even the cook came out to ask us how our food was!!! I was impressed. While having dinner Debbie, the owner's wife, came by to make sure Xena had a treat and to say his to the 3 of us. I was very impressed by how friendly everyone was towards us and especially Xena. Xena is practically my baby, so this made me extremely happy. Debbie asked us how I meal was and we told her it was absolutely delicious. She informed us that they offer brunch on Sunday and told us that it was only $10 with $2 mimosas and bloody mary's. We were sold and told her we would be back the next day for brunch. BRUNCH: Sunday, August 24, 2014. Because dinner the night before had been amazing I had high expectations for brunch. Sadly brunch was not as great as dinner. There was no one at the hostess stand, so we sat ourselves, although we were greeted shortly after we sad down by a very nice man (I didn't get his name). We told him that we were there for brunch and he told us to help ourselves. I would have loved to, except that 2 of the 4 trays they had with food were empty. So my only options were scrambled eggs, grits, biscuits and gravy, and the 2 pieces of french toast (that I took). I ended up having an omelet made (which they only had ham and cheese as options to be mixed in, so that was a little disappointing). The cook (the same as the night before) asked if I wanted him to add a little garlic for an extra hint of flavor to my ham omelet. That was very nice of him to offer. I appreciated him going out of his way. I got back to my table and when my boyfriend saw what was available for brunch, he opted to order a burger from the menu instead. The brunch was ok. I do not feel that we received the same level of service as the night before ( I think they were a little busier during brunch) but it was not bad. I t was still good service. Although, this time around no one offered Xena any doggie treats or water. We had to specifically ask for a bowl of water for Xena and as for the lack of treat...that was okay, we fed her bacon :) All in all this place was fantastic. All places have their "somewhat off" days and no place can be perfect 100% of the time. We were happy. :) read more
