The Back Deck restaurant, really displays its seafood offerings for everyone to see as you enter this popular Virginia Beach restaurant/fresh fish shop. The actual Back Deck, however, is located to the rear of the seafood shop along the deck over looking a beautiful view of the sun set. My Grubbing Buddy and I arrived late at night when there was no sunset to be seen, though there was a refreshing ocean view to behold. We first ordered a Bloody Mary and a beer to start our evening, along with crab dip with pita points (more than we could handle) and, finally, the Steamed Seashore Platter, which included 12 oysters, 12 clams, one pound of shrimp and two crab leg clusters. It was delicious and more than we could handle, so we took what was left back to our hotel room. The Back Deck crowd was friendly, resulting in an enjoyable dining experience. Random edamame showed up at our table which was a welcome mistake. We did manage to place our order for halibut & tuna tacos which took 40 minutes to arrive. Came for drinks after having brunch in the area for my birthday. It's been a long time since I have been in the area and just "hanging out". The view by the water is always beautiful. The place is tucked away next to the main building. It wasn't too crowded and the noise level was good too. Got to chat with friends while downing some delicious crushes. They have a lot of drink options and the place is just laid back and chill. Got the pizza and it was good. Not a fan of thin crust usually but it was just enough to eat with the drinks. Other diners ordered the nachos and it looked really good. The bathroom is tricky and you have to go up the stairs into the retail store. Beautiful views! Seating is limited so get there early. Staff was polite, but definitely under staffed and over worked, making the table service lacking. The food and drink menu looked great with a variety of items to choose from. The food itself when it showed up was not great, super disappointing because everything else about this place is great. The tuna sandwich tasted like ammonia cleaner, might have been sitting out too long, and the pizza was flavorless. Although the crab dip was great! So I'd have to say the menu is hit or miss. The vibes were immaculate, and I love that you can bring your dogs here! It's right on the water, which makes for the perfect setting. The service was excellent, fast and attentive, with multiple staff members checking in on us throughout. I'd recommend upgrading to the wood-fired pizza since the regular crust was pretty bad. Literally one of my favorite places in Virginia Beach!! The ambiance is amazing. This cute spot sits on the water and offers outside seating on the deck. They also have space to dock your boat or jet ski if you decide to boat up. The seating is set up really cool. I absolutely love going on Monday for the crab legs. The crab legs are on happy hour on Mondays. I look forward to Mondays. The crab legs are cooked perfectly. They are served still warm, tender, and super flavorful. Also some of the crushes are on sale during happy hour. However, my favorite crush the "Captains Crush" isn't on sale but I highly recommend it. Also I have a guilty pleasure of sitting on the pier after I eat, to put my feet in the water and eat a soft served ice cream cone. Another great spot right on Shore Dr! If you know me, you know that I love crab legs. This is another go-to spot for me to get some of those delicious crab legs and they are always top-notch. The Back Deck technically only offers outdoor seating, however, a good portion of it is fully covered and on those really hot days, they've got decently sized fans blowing. Although, when you're eating right out on the water like that, a breeze isn't too hard to come by. They have regular tables as well as a full-service bar. This is one of those places where every waiter and staff member seems to take care of you. If your drink runs empty, it's quickly being refilled by the closest individual, whether that be "your" waiter or not. Not to mention everyone here seems to genuinely enjoy their jobs and are always putting on a friendly face. By far one of my favorites parts of this place is that it is pet friendly! We love to bring the dogs here, while catching up over brunch. The waitstaff is always quick to bring out dog bowls for us as well and keeps them full! Overall, great place to stop! read more

The service is really quick. It's seat yourself but our waitress still found us in a sea of people with in 5 minutes. Liked the covered outdoor seating for ambiance and COVID safety. Draft craft beer was refreshing but didn't prepare for the extreme goodness of the crab dip ($15, 5/5). It was warm, creamy, with a bite of spice neutralized perfectly by the oven roasted pita rounds. Mmmmm. I devoured so much, I definitely looked pita-full (#dadpuns). I ordered fish tacos ($11, 4/5) just for the halibut (#dadpuns); 3 decent blackened halibut tacos topped with cabbage, housemade mango salsa, and Mayo based baja sauce; given the crab dip, I didn't miss a side but would have expected one if we skipped apps. He described his tuna tacos ($16, 3.75/5) as pretty good, but not as good as the regular fish tacos (he had them 2 days before...clearing cheating on me with other business colleagues). Wife like the clams but with how can you screw up a clam. Sandwich had little flavor I had chipotle sauce.Eh, the chicken was tasteless Granted this place has one of the best views of the water and sometimes that's all you really need for a good lunchtime. Staff was pretty good although they're timing always seem to be off when we needed them. We had to flag them down When we didn't need them they came to our table. This was my first time checking out this bar/restaurant. I decided to take my mom and treat her to a girls day out, we picked this place for its views, outdoor seating, and seafood. What I love about this place: the service was excellent, timely, friendly and fun. The views from every outdoor table were good, but better closer to the dock. The drinks were delicious, not overly sweet and still packed a good punch. The food: ahi tuna melt, crab legs, and oysters were fresh, tasty, and served quickly. The oysters were of good size, flavor and were cleaned properly (no shell pieces or grime), the ahi tuna melt was gooey, flavorful (had a nice black pepper bite) and a crunchy, buttered panini bread that had me eating every last bite. The crab legs (my mom's dish) were good and easy enough to crack into. She said she had no complaints... We also ordered some specialty "crushes" from the bar, to which I tip my hat to the bartender for creating a lovely concoction. The Back Deck is literally the back deck of the restaurant and has plenty of outdoor seating. It's a little tricky to find because the sign isn't very big, but stick it into Google and you'll be good. We went on a Sunday afternoon and there was plenty of parking. We arrived around 1:30pm and there was still plenty of seating--but most of the shaded seating was already taken, of course. The tables are more or less 6 feet apart from each other...unless someone decides to take down the barstool and sit down by the railing right next to you...(side eye). Anyway, I digress. On a hot summer day, this is the place to be! They have specials everyday too. Their Sunday special was $8 pitchers. My friend and I got a strawberry mimosa pitcher. It was so good we ended up getting 2 more pitchers. No judgment. Our other friend arrived shortly after and ordered an orange mimosa pitcher which was also really good. But I love the strawberry because it's not overly sweet, and super refreshing! We weren't super hungry, so my friend and I just shared some shrimp tacos. The shrimp tacos were DELICIOUS! The house made mango salsa is to die for! Yes, they also have gluten free options (and note it) on the menu! Our other friend got a tuna melt, which he devoured within seconds. The staff are fantastic. They are very attentive and respectful. My wife and I went here on a Sunday evening at about 5 o clock. It wasn't super busy but there was a good amount of people there. We sat down and immediately were served and the service was amazing and extremely quick. They have an interesting service system there were you don't have just one server but all the servers share all the tables. Everyone was very attentive and the food and drinks came out very fast. The dining area is right on the water and the views are great, they have lots of TV's if you want to watch a game, overall the atmosphere was great. We started off with the crab dib which was good and you get a lot, at $15 I thought it was a little bit pricey but you get a lot of it which was nice. I got the fish tacos and my wife got a flatbread pizza. The fish tacos were good my only gripe was that they had a little bit of an off putting fishy taste but overall they were good. There is no better view in Virginia Beach. This is my fave spot to meet friends for a drink on the water. I really appreciate the great selection of local beers, delicious cocktails, and wines to choose from. Make sure to try their food as well when visiting. Literally the back porch of "The Shellfish Company". It actually took me a minute to find it, because I was looking for a stand alone restaurant. This place isn't anything spectacular, but if you are in the area and want to drop in a locals spots, this is it. It's on Shore Dr. but sits along the water, right next to the boat ramp. It neighbors Bubbas Seafood. The open lot is helpful, but on a busy weekend, it may be hard to find a spot. Also, be prepared to smell the fishy smell from the dumpsters and washing stations. I met a friend here during happy hour, but there are no "happy hour" specials here. We ordered crab dip, my date had the seafood nachos and I had shrimp tacos. The dip was really good, I wish it was a bigger size. Her nachos looked amazing and my tacos were ok. We sat, ate, and had more than a few drinks. The server was a little less than attentive, although they were extremely packed. I had to flag down another server to give me another drink. As I mentioned this is in the back of The Shellfish Co, which means, this is where the restrooms are located. There are 2 single restrooms, for the store & restaurant guests. I went to the restroom and it was in complete disarray. That's to be expected with the number of people using them. Another local place that I have wanted to visit. After four years, here we are. So glad we needed to get out of the house today. This is a relaxing place that is very casual. We sat at the railing and looked out over the channel that was busy with boats. So the setting is very chill. Seating is first come first served so seat yourself. There is no one server to help you, they all help each other. You can even walk up to the bar to order your drinks so you don't have to wait if they are busy. I liked this. Ordered drinks and they were quick. Hubby had a Rum Runner and I had a Aperol Spritz, both were very good. I ordered a salmon Caesar salad and it was pretty good. Fish was a little over done, but still had a good flavor. My hubby had a flatbread pizza. I t was good also. The location is what makes this place. It seems created for locals.
