Literally the back porch of "The Shellfish Company". It actually took me a minute to find it, because I was looking for a stand alone restaurant. This place isn't anything spectacular, but if you are in the area and want to drop in a locals spots, this is it. It's on Shore Dr. but sits along the water, right next to the boat ramp. It neighbors Bubbas Seafood. The open lot is helpful, but on a busy weekend, it may be hard to find a spot. Also, be prepared to smell the fishy smell from the dumpsters and washing stations. I met a friend here during happy hour, but there are no "happy hour" specials here. We ordered crab dip, my date had the seafood nachos and I had shrimp tacos. The dip was really good, I wish it was a bigger size. Her nachos looked amazing and my tacos were ok. We sat, ate, and had more than a few drinks. The server was a little less than attentive, although they were extremely packed. I had to flag down another server to give me another drink. As I mentioned this is in the back of The Shellfish Co, which means, this is where the restrooms are located. There are 2 single restrooms, for the store & restaurant guests. I went to the restroom and it was in complete disarray. That's to be expected with the number of people using them. This place is plain expensive we had lunch there no drinks no alcohol drinks and our tab came to $90. My wife ordered some clams. I ordered a sandwich and crab dip. Wife like the clams but with how can you screw up a clam. Sandwich had little flavor I had chipotle sauce.Eh, the chicken was tasteless Granted this place has one of the best views of the water and sometimes that's all you really need for a good lunchtime. Staff was pretty good although they're timing always seem to be off when we needed them. We had to flag them down When we didn't need them they came to our table. I just think two bucks of oyster for steamed oyster is a bit high, especially if it doesn't come with anything else. read more

Another local place that I have wanted to visit. After four years, here we are. So glad we needed to get out of the house today. This is a relaxing place that is very casual. We sat at the railing and looked out over the channel that was busy with boats. So the setting is very chill. Seating is first come first served so seat yourself. There is no one server to help you, they all help each other. You can even walk up to the bar to order your drinks so you don't have to wait if they are busy. I liked this. Ordered drinks and they were quick. Hubby had a Rum Runner and I had a Aperol Spritz, both were very good. I ordered a salmon Caesar salad and it was pretty good. Fish was a little over done, but still had a good flavor. My hubby had a flatbread pizza. I t was good also. The location is what makes this place. It seems created for locals. My wife and I went here on a Sunday evening at about 5 o clock. It wasn't super busy but there was a good amount of people there. We sat down and immediately were served and the service was amazing and extremely quick. They have an interesting service system there were you don't have just one server but all the servers share all the tables. Everyone was very attentive and the food and drinks came out very fast. The dining area is right on the water and the views are great, they have lots of TV's if you want to watch a game, overall the atmosphere was great. We started off with the crab dib which was good and you get a lot, at $15 I thought it was a little bit pricey but you get a lot of it which was nice. I got the fish tacos and my wife got a flatbread pizza. The fish tacos were good my only gripe was that they had a little bit of an off putting fishy taste but overall they were good. My wife loved the pizza and the pizza was huge. We will definitely be back! read more

Sunday Funday! Visited Back Deck on a Sunday around 2:30pm! They have $8 Mimosa and Bloody Mary Pitchers! I started with 1/2 of oysters and blackened tuna tacos! Everything was amazing, including the service. They were constantly coming around to make sure we didn't need anything! To add on to it, the scenery was beautiful. I have always wanted to dine at The Back Deck so today we traveled from Richmond VA to Virginia Beach and decided we would dine there. I ordered the fish tacos, my husband had the Scallop cake slider & 2 Mediterranean Salad which was delicious. I have to say that although the Fish Taco had good flavor the fish was nearly absent. Dissatisfied because it's supposed to be a fish taco and I believe there was maybe a small skinny strip of fish. The iced tea was super good too. read more

This is the spot to come on a sunny day for happy hour! The deck is beautiful which is why I bring my friends from out of town here. They have so many options of flavors for crushes it's hard to choose! I also recently tried the mermaid mule, delicious!! Definitely keep an eye out for their crab leg happy hour. This place is good for drinks only (beer mostly). Nice ambiance, patio and view, but please eat before or after. The food is a mess, not recommended at all. (I) We tried oyster (a mess) they didn't wash them before serving, they came almost warm with all the ice melted, (ii) we tried the tacos, another mess, the tortillas were broken before arriving to my table (when using corn tortillas you need min two tortillas otherwise they get wet and break easily - nobody told them that), the slaw was also terrible. I REALLY wanted to like this place, considering it's location. First off, parking is shared by the other nearby restaurant (Bubba's), right near the Lesner Inn. The parking was not a problem, even on a busy day - Sunday (Father's Day). It is self-seating, outdoors of course. They had options from 2-seat benches facing the water, to larger tables on the deck. Surrounded by the tables, you'll find the bar. You have a nice view of the water and enough shade to be able to enjoy your food if you don't like being directly in the sun. The service took FOREVER. Again, i'm not sure if it was just because it was a busy day, but we had to find someone working there to be ready to take our order, since we were waiting about 20 min to be asked. There weren't too many options on the food menu. We brought our kids with us, and the only option for our picky kids was a cheese flatbread. I ordered a tuna melt, which came with chips, my husband had the tuna tacos, my kids had the cheese flatbread to share, and we ordered the crab dip as well. CRAB DIP (2/10) - There wasn't very much crab flavor that I was getting from the dip, it was way too creamy - tasted more cream cheese or sour cream than anything else. Pita rounds were what came with the dip and it was cold and stale. The colder the dip got, the worse it tasted. My husband felt sick afterwards, probably because of how much cream was in it. I was just really expecting the crab flavor to really show, being that it was $15.00. TUNA MELT (5/10) - I love paninis, I really do. The bread was toasted perfectly, but the inside of it was super bland. At this point, I was really upset about just not being able to taste much from the food I was eating. CHEESE FLATBREAD (7/10) - I love thin crust pizzas, so this was not bad. BUT, when you hear the word flatbread, you'd think the crust would've been a bit thicker - however this was paper thin. The cheese on top melted perfectly and the kids loved it, though. I would just wish it would've been more filling. TUNA TACOS - can't rate because I didn't have them, but my husband had no complaints. All in all, I wish their food was better and the service was quicker, but that's what determined my rating. I wish I liked it more, but for almost $80 worth of food, I felt as if I could have had a much better experience else-where. read more

I have never left a yelp review before but the service I received today made me feel compelled to leave a review for the first time ever. Let me preface this by saying this has been one of my favorite establishments since I moved here 4 years ago. The food is still good and the views and atmosphere is hard to beat. However, the service I got today makes me question if I will want to return for a while. I understand these are harder times but some things are inexcusable. I sat down and it took 25 minutes before I was even offered water or a drink. The serving staff took pictures of my dog before asking me if I wanted water. The only reason I was even asked if I wanted a drink was because the poor girl, Kendall, who was bussing (and the only one doing so) and who was serving at the same time saw my frustration. The service was so slow the people beside me had to literally wave staff down to get them to get their drinks after they had been there for 20 minutes as well. It was a running joke about the service between us. When the girl who waived down the staff got her order the staff said the internet was down and she couldn't think straight. Basic hospitality does not require internet. I wrote one of my friends and this was their response in the picture. The service is an ongoing well known issue. It needs to be addressed. I am not sure if the owner/gm care about this based on other reviews as this seems to be an ongoing issue. I am only doing this review in the hopes they strive to do better. At least my waitress, Kendall was able to multi-task and serve me while bussing. The other staff it took 45 minutes before checking in on me. And none of the staff looked happy to be there. Strive to be better. If the service hospitality continues this way I will go elsewhere where customers are valued. There are plenty of options. read more

We showed up right around noon on Monday, September 2nd. Surprisingly, we still managed to find a table immediately considering it was a nice, warm Labor Day right at peak lunch hour. Our table was the only table available that wasn't completely out in direct sunlight. It was partly shaded so we decided to ask if it was ok to move it in some & the waitress said it was fine as long as we didn't block the walkway. I decided to order the crab dip appetizer as my daughter's meal and she enjoyed it. We helped her out too since it was a lot for her to eat alone. Unfortunately, the pita rounds got a little hard after sitting out so it wasn't as enjoyable. I ordered the fish tacos, cod being the fresh catch, and it was just ok. I honestly couldn't even tell that there was much fish in my tacos at all. I kind of felt like I was eating a vegetarian taco. Both of my girlfriends had the chicken wrap and they said it was pretty good. I got a virgin mango crush, but I don't remember what it tasted like since my daughter took ownership of it. Welp, I liked this place but it's on a smooth decline...the last few times some of these attitudes the servers have had are kinda like.."why do you work here then?" I came for a happy hour and sat next to a women who was belligerently drunk and let's just say should've been removed long ago. What did it this trip, was when one bartender overheard me talking to a friend about how I liked Chick's crab dip better, proceeded to tell me undisclosed information about Chick's that will be happening soon, and then tell me if I complained to the manager about how I didn't like the crab dip, the manager would tell me how he wouldn't care. Needless to say, I stayed to finish up my drinks, but I thought that was kinda ridiculous. If that attitude is what is to be expected of the manager, no wonder the staff have attitudes. On Sunday we decided to drop in for an early dinner/ late lunch for my birthday. My friend and I went in first and we were told by a hostess that we could have a table. We told her we were gonna go to the bathroom first and when we got back someone was sitting at our table. BTW- when we had gotten there, NO ONE was sitting there. The table was just cleared. I told another hostess this information and she told me someone had been sitting there. But my friend and I both walked in seeing that table was empty and was told we could sit there. Anyways, so they told us to stand outside until they came to get us. We stood around for at least 10 mins until finally they came and got us. For drinks, we had pitchers of mimosas and bloody marys. I had ordered the back deck Italian and my husband had gotten the flatbread pizza. The sandwich was dry and flavorless. The bread tasted like the way cardboard smelled. Hubby said pizza was cold. I'm giving them a 3 star because the drinks were good, our waitresses were nice and the view was wonderful. I would come again.. or I wouldn't.. I'm not even sure myself lol. read more

This is the place to come if you want to feel like a local. We ordered Rum Runners to start off the night and they were gone pretty quickly! Well worth the money, lots of flavor, and they were generous with the alcohol For dinner we got fish tacos and tuna tacos and were doing a happy food dance the whole time! The mango salsa MADE these tacos and the corn tortillas were absolutely perfect. The wait staff was so friendly and helpful. We saw MANY pups (which I'm aware may not be a plus for some, but I was in heaven). The sun was setting and we got to see it go down on Chick's beach while enjoying the ambience and good food. Let me begin by saying that this place has an amazing atmosphere; it is right by the water, dog friendly, and perfect for sunsets. Now for the main review. When arriving, you will need to go to one of the side entrances to make it to the dock/seating area. We were seated very quick by a very friendly hostess/waitress. However, after being seated we were not served for at least 10-15 min. I believe they were understaffed so I cannot put that against the servers. As far as the menu goes, there is no kid menu but there are many options for adults and teenagers! After being waited on, there was already tension between my family and the waitress which seemed to already be stressed. This set the night to be a passive aggressive dinner which did not mix well. To the waitress that waited on my table, I am personally sorry for my families behavior. However, working as a server/waitress does require to put up with unwanted behaviors and not reciprocate. The pettiness from both parties was very unpleasant, and as a bystander both sides were very unprofessional. Talking about the food, the food was decent but not my favorite. There were certain things that I really enjoyed such as the "Crab Mac N Cheese" and the "edamame's". The tacos were decent but spicy, my salad was bear and the salmon I ordered with it was very greasy. The tuna avocado toast comes with smoked tuna that has an interesting taste; If you are not familiar with smoked meats I don't recommend it unless you are adventurous! A word to the wise: if you're ordering take-out, you need to pick it up at the register of the Shellfish Company, not at the entrance to the Back Deck. I ordered over the phone and no one told me this, so we had a bit of confusion when we first got there. However, the food was ready right when they said it would be, which was appreciated. All in all, the food was pretty good. We got raw oysters on the half shell, crab dip, and the scallop cake sliders. The oysters were very fresh and not fishy at all in my opinion, and they give you plenty of lemon and cocktail sauce if you like that with your oysters. The crab dip was good, but at times it was hard to taste the crab. The scallop cake sliders were probably the best - good flavor and consistency throughout, and the chipotle aioli was a good touch. For the three dishes I paid about $40, which seemed reasonable to me. If you are at all COVID-conscious, I highly recommend take-out as we did, because the dining situation looked rather crowded. If you like good food/drinks and an even better view/atmosphere, definitely go to the Back Deck. We couldn't believe what a gem this place was until we got there and enjoyed happy hour. We first sat at the bar tops on the water side but then, when the wind picked up, moved to a table farther inside. We could certainly still see the water and enjoy the evening--no doubt! The crowd was definitely made up of locals and visitors, which was a good sign to me. The wait staff was incredibly friendly and professional, even when the kitchen got a little backed up. We ordered the nachos and two flatbreads pizzas, all of which were great. Would definitely order again. We expected the flatbreads to be smaller, but they were huge! We each only ate half and then had the other half for lunch the next day. My boyfriend loved the Back Decker and Summer Breeze drinks, with a Watermelon Crush coming in next. Highly recommend! We were visiting from out of town and looking for a dog-friendly patio with a water view and we couldn't have picked a better place. The views were outstanding, the food delicious and the wait staff was impeccable. Unfortunately, a patron caused a disturbance, but the staff handled things fantastic and everyone continued to enjoy their evening.
