Sunday Funday! Visited Back Deck on a Sunday around 2:30pm! They have $8 Mimosa and Bloody Mary Pitchers! I started with 1/2 of oysters and blackened tuna tacos! I REALLY wanted to like this place, considering it's location. First off, parking is shared by the other nearby restaurant (Bubba's), right near the Lesner Inn. The parking was not a problem, even on a busy day - Sunday (Father's Day). It is self-seating, outdoors of course. They had options from 2-seat benches facing the water, to larger tables on the deck. Surrounded by the tables, you'll find the bar. You have a nice view of the water and enough shade to be able to enjoy your food if you don't like being directly in the sun. The service took FOREVER. Again, i'm not sure if it was just because it was a busy day, but we had to find someone working there to be ready to take our order, since we were waiting about 20 min to be asked. There weren't too many options on the food menu. We brought our kids with us, and the only option for our picky kids was a cheese flatbread. I ordered a tuna melt, which came with chips, my husband had the tuna tacos, my kids had the cheese flatbread to share, and we ordered the crab dip as well. CRAB DIP (2/10) - There wasn't very much crab flavor that I was getting from the dip, it was way too creamy - tasted more cream cheese or sour cream than anything else. Pita rounds were what came with the dip and it was cold and stale. The colder the dip got, the worse it tasted. My husband felt sick afterwards, probably because of how much cream was in it. I was just really expecting the crab flavor to really show, being that it was $15.00. TUNA MELT (5/10) - I love paninis, I really do. The bread was toasted perfectly, but the inside of it was super bland. At this point, I was really upset about just not being able to taste much from the food I was eating. CHEESE FLATBREAD (7/10) - I love thin crust pizzas, so this was not bad. BUT, when you hear the word flatbread, you'd think the crust would've been a bit thicker - however this was paper thin. The cheese on top melted perfectly and the kids loved it, though. I would just wish it would've been more filling. TUNA TACOS - can't rate because I didn't have them, but my husband had no complaints. All in all, I wish their food was better and the service was quicker, but that's what determined my rating. I have never left a yelp review before but the service I received today made me feel compelled to leave a review for the first time ever. Let me preface this by saying this has been one of my favorite establishments since I moved here 4 years ago. The food is still good and the views and atmosphere is hard to beat. However, the service I got today makes me question if I will want to return for a while. I understand these are harder times but some things are inexcusable. I sat down and it took 25 minutes before I was even offered water or a drink. The serving staff took pictures of my dog before asking me if I wanted water. The only reason I was even asked if I wanted a drink was because the poor girl, Kendall, who was bussing (and the only one doing so) and who was serving at the same time saw my frustration. The service was so slow the people beside me had to literally wave staff down to get them to get their drinks after they had been there for 20 minutes as well. It was a running joke about the service between us. When the girl who waived down the staff got her order the staff said the internet was down and she couldn't think straight. Basic hospitality does not require internet. I wrote one of my friends and this was their response in the picture. The service is an ongoing well known issue. It needs to be addressed. I am not sure if the owner/gm care about this based on other reviews as this seems to be an ongoing issue. I am only doing this review in the hopes they strive to do better. At least my waitress, Kendall was able to multi-task and serve me while bussing. The other staff it took 45 minutes before checking in on me. And none of the staff looked happy to be there. Our table was the only table available that wasn't completely out in direct sunlight. It was partly shaded so we decided to ask if it was ok to move it in some & the waitress said it was fine as long as we didn't block the walkway. I decided to order the crab dip appetizer as my daughter's meal and she enjoyed it. We helped her out too since it was a lot for her to eat alone. Welp, I liked this place but it's on a smooth decline...the last few times some of these attitudes the servers have had are kinda like.."why do you work here then?" I have always wanted to dine at The Back Deck so today we traveled from Richmond VA to Virginia Beach and decided we would dine there. I ordered the fish tacos, my husband had the Scallop cake slider & 2 Mediterranean Salad which was delicious. I have to say that although the Fish Taco had good flavor the fish was nearly absent. All in all, the food was pretty good. We got raw oysters on the half shell, crab dip, and the scallop cake sliders. The oysters were very fresh and not fishy at all in my opinion, and they give you plenty of lemon and cocktail sauce if you like that with your oysters. The crab dip was good, but at times it was hard to taste the crab. The scallop cake sliders were probably the best - good flavor and consistency throughout, and the chipotle aioli was a good touch. For the three dishes I paid about $40, which seemed reasonable to me. If you are at all COVID-conscious, I highly recommend take-out as we did, because the dining situation looked rather crowded. Let me begin by saying that this place has an amazing atmosphere; it is right by the water, dog friendly, and perfect for sunsets. Now for the main review. When arriving, you will need to go to one of the side entrances to make it to the dock/seating area. We were seated very quick by a very friendly hostess/waitress. However, after being seated we were not served for at least 10-15 min. I believe they were understaffed so I cannot put that against the servers. As far as the menu goes, there is no kid menu but there are many options for adults and teenagers! After being waited on, there was already tension between my family and the waitress which seemed to already be stressed. This set the night to be a passive aggressive dinner which did not mix well. To the waitress that waited on my table, I am personally sorry for my families behavior. However, working as a server/waitress does require to put up with unwanted behaviors and not reciprocate. The pettiness from both parties was very unpleasant, and as a bystander both sides were very unprofessional. Talking about the food, the food was decent but not my favorite. There were certain things that I really enjoyed such as the "Crab Mac N Cheese" and the "edamame's". The tacos were decent but spicy, my salad was bear and the salmon I ordered with it was very greasy. The tuna avocado toast comes with smoked tuna that has an interesting taste; If you are not familiar with smoked meats I don't recommend it unless you are adventurous! The crowd was definitely made up of locals and visitors, which was a good sign to me. The wait staff was incredibly friendly and professional, even when the kitchen got a little backed up. We ordered the nachos and two flatbreads pizzas, all of which were great. Would definitely order again. We expected the flatbreads to be smaller, but they were huge! Brought my best friend when she was visiting, as I heard amazing things, unfortunately we both didn't have the experience that had been promised. We got cocktails - and both felt they were the worst we had had in years. My orange crush was ok, but was basically just a straight glass of store-bought orange juice - too sweet and thick to even drink. I left the majority of it at the bar as it was too bad to drink. My best friend had the flattest most watered-down rum and coke I've ever seen.
