A visit to Old Town Portsmouth, we found it very quaint and charming. It was lunchtime on Tues and it wasn't crowded at all. I ordered a plain burger and fries, it was cooked to perfection and had a nice char on it, brioche roll and lettuce and tomato. The French fries were great too! I would definitely go back. I Work in local area and forgot my lunch. wanted clean high protein lunch. Searched 10 restaurants in the area. Settled on this one specifically because they have an "8 ounce" side of grilled chicken. Called and ordered house salad and the grilled chicken. Asked specifically if side was really 8 ounces. Great place for a night out! Our server was very nice and made sure to keep tabs on us and our food. When we got our food it was very hot! We got the crab dip and the basket of sweet potato fries. Definitely recommend both! They came out in a timely manner and were super flavorful. The crab dip wasn't overly crabby, and the sweet potato fries were reasonably sweet, they were a bit of a tad small amount though, definitely recommend getting two trays for four people. I so love and live for a hometown feel bar... that's the vibe I received once I entered this restaurant... bar. Longboards is located in the heart of Portsmouth! Downtown... High Street...Portside... this area is one to explorer if you are in the city. There is parking available on the street as well as parking garages all within walking distance. As you walk up and down High Street, you will see some sights, some worth gazing at and some worth looking the other way. This historic area of the city is a favorite hangout for a date night, with family or if you just want to getaway. Well our reason for visiting this past Thursday was to get something good to eat and enjoy a few adult beverages. Luckily, we were able to find parking on the street only steps from the restaurant. We walked in and headed for the bar. We were immediately greeted by Bridget ... a cute petitie young bartender who was ready to cater to us. It was a Thursday afternoon about 3pm - 4pm... the bar had a steady group of guests. I'd say about 10 were present... everyone was pretty much around the bar top. We ordered and our food arrived maybe 10 minutes later... my salad... so fresh and so bomb! My babe loved his shrimp tacos as well. As I am writing, I can taste those blackened shrimp... yummy!! The drinks were awesome! Not sure how long the cute bartender has been around, but I saw her work the bar and she was amazing... taking orders.. refilling drinks... and talking to the guests... kudos to her!! I found out she usually works during the day. If you are around, I recommend you stop by during the day to experience this great service. I cannot vouch for the evening, but we are so looking forward to returning to try more food options. The restaurant is the right size... the restroom was neat and smelled fresh... We LOVE longboards - both locations but I must say this portsmouth location is such a fun vibe. Right in downtown Portsmouth and easy to find. The food is always good especially for being right in downtown it's nice to still have fresh seafood. Would definitely recommend their blackened shrimp and sweet potato fries. Along with their mahi tacos and nachos! All are great honestly. Typically they also always have daily specials on meals. The bar is super cool with their tiki bar vibe. You'll definitely feel like you're in a tropical island bar at this location. You can sit outside if you would like, you'll be right near the street but depending on the time of day or night it might be ideal. Service has always been good even when they are packed. My only thing I'm not a huge fan of is their beer list. With only a few craft beers on tap (less than I like to see) and a smaller wine selection; however, they do offer some great cocktails to choose from. read more

Friend of mine and I wanted something different for lunch so we stopped in...we were not disappointed but in fact really enjoyed the experience. The interior is inviting with lots of natural light even with wood everywhere including the high table seating areas and finishes. While the menu was not extensive, we took the advise of our waitress and had the tacos along with some adult beverages. These soft tacos were just great...really good with just enough of lettuce, cheese, pico and sour cream to dress them appropriately. Service was just right as well and for the price, this was one of the best lunch outings I have been on in some time. This place was not far from my hotel. I came with friends (6 of us). Based on everyone's meals I can say that the shrimp platter wasn't great. The crab dip burger was delicious. The nachos were amazing. They were a favorite! The wings (garlic Parmesan and lemon pepper) were also a big hit. The drinks are good here. They have a large menu of cocktails and shooters. Very impressed with the place! I came in for lunch today for a business meeting. Not often do I get over to Portsmouth but I'm slowly finding reasons to pay more attention to this area with places like this. Walk in off of High Street and you notice two separate areas: a smoking section bar and a regular restaurant/bar in the back (also with a separate outside entrance)...non-smoking side. There is a separate ventilation system so you don't notice the other side is smokers although the smell on that side isn't bad at all. Not sure what to order I paid close attention to what the staff was bringing to the current customers. Never had I tried an avocado bacon burger when the waitress had one in hand and I immediately knew I wanted to give it a shot. You get a scoop of avocado on the top of your burger along with bacon and your choice of cheese. It's not the healthiest thing to eat but it sure was damn good. After eating all our food the people in my party went ahead and ordered chocolate mousse tart. At first I declined to make today a cheat today but after seeing two tarts come to the table I couldn't resist but to have my own. What I like most about this place is that once you are inside you forget where you are (Portsmouth --- not a bad thing)...this place adding to what we often overlook in these unique neighborhoods outside of our regular stomping ground. read more

I've been here a few times and the thing is I really do love the food here. I live in Norfolk and sometimes I come across the water just to eat at Longboards - The Hula Burger is the BEST! It's flame grilled with pineapple and teriyaki sauce and choice of provolone, cheddar, swiss cheeses. I'm telling you that the pineapple and teriyaki sauce on the burger is outta this world. I've had the nachos there too, which were just okay. They have a lot of menu options to choose from, all with a Hawaiian flair. Longboards has a nice patio outside with plenty of downtown Portsmouth street traffic. It's always fun to sit out there at night and watch the people go by. The bar inside is also nice, however it isn't a very big area (the bar is big, the dining area not so much). Now to the bad part; the service here can be pretty horrible. It's like the manager only hired beautiful, tan, thin, RUDE girls. I have gone in before to get a drink and left because we could never get any service, which is basically unacceptable. There are one or two bartenders/servers that work here that are just fine and will make your experience enjoyable. Come for the food, try to grab a table outside and you'll be good to go. read more

Standard bar and grill as far as appearance and menu goes. We went on a Saturday (6 PM) before attending a concert and got a table right away and drinks. Food took an hour. App came out, nachos, and it was like they dumped the bag of tortilla chips onto the plate. There was so much salt it left a salt ring on the table. We sent it back. Two ppl I was with food came out 15 minutes before mine. Manager handled well comping nachos and offering discount however he told us he doesn't do anything in the kitchen. In my opinion that is not a manager. A manager needs to be able wear ALL hats. If the bar is sinking, you jump in and help. If waitresses are struggling, jump in, if the kitchen is drowning, you jump in. He even said "I had no clue they got that many orders at once." How do you not have a clue what's going on in your restaurant? As a former restaurant manager that response was just puzzling and if I owned this place would either be replacing my management or doing some much needed training. It wasnt the worst experience ever but we won't be returning. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped in for an early lunch and we truly enjoyed every part of it! We both started with their she-crab soup which was some of the best we have ever had! I had the island plate and he had the cod tacos. My meal was good but I do miss how they used to make it. However, I was still satisfied. My boyfriend said the fish tacos were literally the best he has ever had in Virginia and trust me... he's tried a lot. We are both foodies and love trying new things and comparing between restaurants. We were both very pleased with the overall experience. Our server was nice and fun as well. The food is alright, decorations are kinda a surfing hawian feel, nice wood with dollars tacked to the bar. sometimes they'll have a good band come in, but the music is hella loud. Bar in the front is usually full, but the outside area isn't bad, they also have a back area with pool tables. A plus is they have 4 single person bathrooms, But what really made me return was a badass bartend named Justin. He's the best bartender in the downtown area, from the first day I walked in he was engaging, genuine, and hardworking. Sadly most bartenders in the area are rude, take forever to get your drink, overpour, and would rather text than exchange a few words. I don't know if it's because it was super late, but this place certainly had its ups, and of course its A-Okays. Not being familiar with Portsmouth whatsoever, I had to have a local friend drive us, which made her sort of a life saver considering the time of night. First thing I've noticed was live music, always a big plus in my book, and some country at that! We immediately went in the back room, where we spent most of our time playing pool. Drinks were reasonably priced, the staff regularly walked around with a tray of shots, which made me giggle, and were always patient and bubbly. Overall, it was an okay experience - the company made it a whole lot more fun, but the bar itself was decent. When I'm around again, I'll give it another shot - possibly a bit earlier in the night. I don't normally write bad reviews because they make me sad, but this time it really is sad. I came in here today for a quick lunch between my classes hoping to try something new in the block. I've read so many good reviews about it so I figured I would try it. Plus its supposedly a Hawaiian bar and I love me some Hawaiian food. I guess that is where I went wrong. I came in with high expectations thinking it will be spectacular. Granted this was a lunch experience, it may be completely different during the evenings, I was at least hoping to get some good tasting food to chow down on. Got there rather early, they had just opened, so plenty of open tables around. I sat close to the bar. The waitress was prompt with a menu and a smile. So far so great. Ordered a water to drink and the Mixed Seafood from the Hawaiian section. The table was sticky so I tried not to lean or touch it. About 15minutes later food came (I was thinking, it would be like alohas and breaded). The plate was packed with food. There was light water cabbage under the broiled seasoned fish and 4 seasoned broiled tiny shrimpies on top of that then a small side of salad, rice with terriyaki sauce and a pretty good macaroni salad. I think the mac salad was my favorite of all the things that was on my plate. The food came hot so I started grubbing. It was overall pretty decent but not good or great by any means. Its food and I was hungry so I ate away. When I began eating the 3rd shrimpies, I noticed a hair. Okay so I'll pull it out and take that shrimp to the side so I wont have to eat it. No biggie there. Except when I pulled it, it was LONG and stuck in between the seasoning for the shrimp and the fish below. That was NOT acceptable. GAG. I didn't want to cause any commotion so I just asked for the check and left right after that. I also forgot to mention that there were a bunch of flies circicling around my food, that also seem to have doubled as I kept eating my food. One of them landed on the tip of my straw. No THANKS. That was pretty much the last draw for me. Maybe, I'll come back just for drinks next time and sit outside. Perhaps ill have better luck during the night. Everything from my previous reviews rings true, my drop to 3 stars is based upon the bartender who gave me change for a 5 when I gave him a 20 (stranger beside me verified it) yet he carried on that if his drawer was short he would know who to blame. This interaction over a bottle of Coors Light, plus the no coin change resulted in no tip. If my drink is $2.50, give me $17.50 back. Don't round up, I will decide what to tip with my own money. He gave me $17 dollars back begrudgingly & I promptly departed. That was a bullshit experience that no patron should have to deal with. Overall, I'll probably only ever come back to have wings and beer at the bar with some buddies, otherwise I'll look elsewhere in Portsmouth to bring my family for lunch/dinner. The wings were great, nice sauce options. The fish tacos were on the cusp of being great fish tacos, but lacked character and toppings. They were basically made-up of a few chunks/nuggets of fish with a sprinkle of cabbage, drizzled with a cream sauce. I'm not exaggerating either, there were about 10 strands of shaved cabbage/lettuce on each taco. No salsa of any kind to compliment it. The fish pieces however were perfectly fried and very tasty on their own. If they beefed these tacos up a bit and offered a salsa of some kind then they'd be fantastic. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich. The pulled pork they served was rather dry and bland on its own and desperately needed a thorough sauce compliment, which was not offered. She did like the coleslaw that came with it; similar to regular coleslaw, but with thousand island dressing (my best guess) mixed in. Underwhelming dish on flavor, but the portion was very large. They have a kids menu which is nice, but when we asked about juice/milk options we were steered away by the waitress who though the juice tasted funny; we went with waters instead. Also, they do not offer small cups with lids. Anyone with little children in tow understands the necessity for lids on cups at the restaurant. Lastly, the outside seating was nice enough, but allows patrons to smoke at the tables which ruined it for me. It was a beautiful day out, so we sucked it up and dealt with the cigarette sink from our neighboring table. read more
