Ahh Birch.... still killing it like usual. The draft selection nice with the awesome GM that was super friendly and informative. We enjoy coming out here for our rare date night. Even though we've been dabbling in more liquors, this place continues to step it up in exclusive meads and beers that are just practically impossible to find anywhere else. They've kicked it up a bunch of notches with their continued amazing grilled cheese sandwich menu. I wish I could elaborate more than just 'grilled cheese' but if you wanted to elevate a grilled cheese to fine dining, this is about what you'd expect. If you love craft beer, you need to come to the Birch. Such an amazing , diverse selection of beers that you will not see almost anywhere else. Along with great American craft breweries, they also feature some amazing European beers I've never seen anywhere else. Very friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable service too makes it the perfect spot. Food: I mentioned to my server what I was in the mood for and ended up with the Vikings Blod sandwich. It was bacon cheesy perfection. Great beer and food? Already winning. The menu seems geared towards fancy grilled cheeses but they also have some appetizers and build-your-own charcuterie boards. Interesting cocept...like a wine bar, but for beer drinkers. Actually wine is also available, but this is place to go to for a world of beer experiences. We hit it just before heading back home from a day of eating and traveling through town. We only stayed long enough to taste a few ales and have a cheese snack. All good. When I'm planning a vacation I always look on some beer sites to find out some of the best places to get a wide variety of beer. The Birch was rated very high on one of the sites so we decided to go there. It did not disappoint. The beer selection, both draft and bottle/cans was incredible. They had most styles that you can think of and some flavor combinations you most definitely didn't think of. The food was very good. I had one of their grilled cheese sandwiches (their weekly special one) which was delicious. I also ordered the pickled vegetables to go and ate them later on our trip. They were excellent. I can't say enough good things about the staff. Kelly, our beertender, was awesome. She was very friendly and made some excellent recommendations when I asked her to surprise me on my 4th beer in the flight. We actually made a trip back on another day she worked. My husband and I visited The Birch this past weekend for the first time and enjoyed every aspect of the experience! The venue itself is very calm and relaxing. It is an easy place for a date night or meet up with friends. There was plenty of room inside and outside for all preferences. The drink selection was also good, with a variety of beer selections and wines for any preference. I was a fan of the Blackberry Cider. Finally, the food selection was also great - however not ideal for those avoiding dairy. I had the Berry Nightmare sandwich and loved every bite! Stopped at The Birch after spending time at other breweries/restaurants in the area. The food was good and the ambiance was perfect for a date night. However, I would not recommend coming with a large group. I'll admit the number of people in our group was probably very overwhelming, but the way we were treated left a sour impression... Would've totally understood if they asked us to separate into smaller groups so that seating wouldn't be as complicated. Fortunately, they allowed us to move tables around so we could sit together. I was pleased by this, but as the night went on, our waitress seemed very inconvenienced while we ordered our drinks/food and made a big deal about us figuring out our checks at the end of the night. To be fair, I think I need to go back some other time with a much smaller group to get a real feel for the place. Nice set up! I would have never found out about this place if it wasn't for a case study I was apart of. Let alone this area of Norfolk is called Chelsea - super lost! I figured Chelsea was another city in Virginia or elsewhere. Well no more worries, I am in the know now. For beer lovers or those that enjoy an open atmosphere and a cool hang out spot with outdoor seating, this is your place. Full meals are not served here, but cheeses and some small plates are featured here. The owner suggests you order from nearby eateries. The closest spot is a pizza shop next door. However, keep in mind the pizza shop closes about 8 pm on weekdays. I visited on a Wednesday and by time I thought to order, the pizza shop was closed. But there are other restaurants within walking distance but I am unsure if they deliver. I tried a light beer and it was just OK. But please keep in mind I am hardly a beer drinker. Nevertheless, if I return it wouldn't be for the beer it would be to socialize in this low lit atmosphere. Kind of sexy inside, but I'd leave the kids at home. Parking is super limited. There is street parking, but I can imagine parking may be a headache on a weekend or any special event with larger crowds. On this random Wednesday night, the Birch had about 20 patrons present. Boasting as the 4th best brewery in the nation, it definitely has amazing service and beer. Not a beer drinker myself, my husband and I went here to get one beer for my husband as we enjoyed some delicious pizza next door (the Bakehouse at Chelsea) so we can sit outside in the covered outdoor seating area. My husband ordered a draft which we cannot remember the name, and he enjoyed it so much he decided to try the Oktoberfest brew. He said it was delicious and ended up order two of those! Is The Birch a sophisticated drinking establishment in disguise as a dive bar. I mean anyone that has seen the neighborhood next to a military installation in a residential hood may ask the same. The fact it's in a cinder block building would beg the question. It's housed under same roof as Tortilla W. Parking is strictly off street if you can find it. They are closed Sunday and Monday, but Tuesday and Wednesday are not crowded and parking should not be an issue. On my walk to the joint I saw no excessive debris and no scary looking hipsters. I did smell the waffling odor of some reefer when passing Tortilla West, but who doesn't love that smell. On warm evenings the front turns outdoor patio, but it was 29 degrees and tables were not set up for obvious reasons. There is also a full size garage door that is lifted up if the climate is conducive to it. I imagine this would make the atmosphere of the place really cool. It was time to head in. From the outside looking in your unsure if The Birch is even open, that's called mood lighting folks and they love it. So as I opened the door, a door you could probably have on your garage at home I immediately witness it's dead. Concrete floors, open air duct work and a large bar that seats around sixteen. Tons of taps were in front of me as I sat down and absorbed the dimensions of the watering hole. A couple of male bartenders were behind the counter with three customers. Several others were at tables located in the center. It is not a big place, but again in warmer months they can really expand. Everything was spic and span clean which will always score high for me on any business. I alluded to the lighting before, it was like a hideout from the rest of the world to enjoy beer, this was good! Cool Pandora music played overhead providing a nice tranquil vibe for the night. This changes based on the crowd of course, but it was that type of night. There was a humongous chalk board listing all the current taps and boy does it go on and on and on. I immediately got the feeling this is a refined beer connoisseur establishment even though the looks from the outside would have you and others believe differently. I only recognized a half dozen of the crafts they had listed, that was great! I saddled up to the bar and was met quickly by a male bar keep that assisted me. I was unsure of tap, or bottle and looked over the drink menu, the board menu and asked for a food menu too! I let him know it was my first time so I could get some additional lay of the land help. There are some places that the staff can come off snobish when and I had heard that this joint catered to a cultured crowd that knows there crafts. However, I did not get that feeling at all and was felt at ease as some recommendations were made. The half pours sounded like the best deal and went that direction. The Hardywood Raspberry Stout only offered in the Winter won me over and boy did it ever. It was possibly the best finishing beer I've had in my life. The knowledge level of brewery's and brews left me feeling at ease and impressed. I knew for sure that I was eating and looked over the Beer Infused Grilled Cheese sandwiches which sounded tempting to order a few. I also asked for recommendation and was not disappointed, he knew their top sellers and the nuisances of each sandwich to guide me to the best choice. I ended up picking the Schlenky which contains grafton maple smoked cheddar, green apple mustard, prosciutto for $9. It comes which chips, nuts, or a mix. A hefty price for a sandwich, but considering a new establishment in Norfolk opened up charging even more this did not appear completely out of sight, especially if was high quality as I suspected. The bartenders double as cooks and he went back and flipped the light on and got right to work. The owner Malia came in and sat down beside me with her lap top to work. I found out she can go toe to toe with any beer geek which was impressive. The other male bartender got me another round, a Great Divide Imperial Stout on tap after discussing options. I had issues with locating the beer on untapped and he assisted which was nice. . The plating was nice on the sandwich, I mean it is a sandwich after all, but it present well for $9, ha! The flavors knocked my socks off, wonderful taste that my buds had not experienced before and assuming it was the green apple mustard which was present throughout every bite. A check in to see how I liked it was great. Water was provided upon request and refiled at the appropriate time. I tried one other before departing, the X Reserve Imperial Coffee Stout by Saucony. The head on this beer was fantastic and the taste of coffee was lingering as I finished off my sandwich. Cool atmosphere, very knowledgeable staff, clean everything including the restrooms and best of all service was well above expectations. I would easily return again and recommend. read more

Maybe, it's just me but I wasn't blown away when coming here. We came on a rainy Saturday night. It wasn't crazy busy, but we couldn't find a seat at first. It's weird when you walk in because it seems like you're walking into a random person's house. You walk right in to the seating area. No foyer or waiting vestibule. But no biggie. Our server didn't come right away, which I wasn't too upset about, but I wasn't sure if we had a server or if we were suppose to order from the bar, since it's a "seat yourself" type of place. The drink selection is awesome, there truly is a beer for every person. Their menu seemed pretty good, although all we did was drink. I'm just really not a fan of the layout. I love beer and I love cheese, so this place has pretty much everything I could ever want. The interior is cozy -- not a ton of space, but we've never had trouble finding a spot to sit or stand. There are tables and bar space, as well as outdoor seating for when the weather is nice. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable They have a big draft list that changes regularly so there's always something new to try. They offer a great mix of both local options and less-available beer from other states. I love that they frequently have bottles from my favorite brewery (Off Color Brewing in Chicago), which can be a little harder to track down in this area. They have a pretty nice cheese selection and you can make a custom cheese board from all the different options. I've also had their grilled cheese sandwiches and they're delicious. I wish they had a few more food options but what they do offer is great. All in all, this is probably my favorite bar in the area. read more

I have a feeling my fellow Yelper's aren't going to like what I have to say about this place, but I have to call it like I see it. First things first. Do they have great beer here? Yes. Do they have great atmosphere? Yes. Is it all over the top. Absolutely. The Birch Bar is the latest hipster trendy place to arrive on the Norfolk scene. I'm not sure if that was by design or not, but that's what it's turned into. The beer selection is awesome and it's also way over priced even for downtown Norfolk. Food here is sparse. You can get a grilled cheese sandwich for $9.00 (cough) or one their cheese boards. They also have some little finger snacks like popcorn and beer nuts for $3.00 each and that's it for the menu. They play no music and I like this concept as it invokes conversation. However you wouldn't have been able to hear the music, or much less the person next to you, without screaming the night I visited. The beers are many and varied and the assortment is always changing. No matter your poison, the pint or goblet you order is going to run you on average about $8.00 per beer. We were definitely having trouble getting a waitress to serve us so we ended up getting our beers from the bar. I'm going to wait a bit and let the hype die down before my next visit. Personally I wish they were open on Sundays so you could experience the joint with a non nightlife environment. Maybe they'll do that next year by the time football season has started. read more

CALLING ALL BEER LOVERS!!! This place has beers out the wazoo. And they don't have just any beer, they have craft beers from around the world, both on draft and in bottles. If you're looking to just try a bunch of beers, they offer half-pours as well as full-pours. If you're looking to bring beer home, they'll fill up a growler for you too! I love coming to this place at night and sitting at their tables outside. The waitstaff loves beer as much as their customers do, so they're able to give really solid recommendations if you don't even know where to start. Sometimes the amount of beer they have can be overwhelming, so don't be afraid to ask a question or two! If you're a cheese eater (not me), they have cheese boards here too. If you don't eat cheese, but are interested like me, they have a great beer-to-cheese pairing chart on their menu as well. Yes Yes Yes. A great place to sit with friends, drink some great beers, and not have to talk over really loud music. They have an extensive list of draft and bottles, stuff that you probably haven't heard of, and the staff there is eager to pint you in the right direction for a good beer. This place won't make my list of cheap places to drink by a long shot. And that's fine. Cheap beer doesn't exist here. The least expensive draft is $4.50, which doesn't break the bank and you'll be getting something much more tastier than anything you'll find around the corner. Just make sure you're keeping track of what each beer costs- it's easy to mistakenly order a $25 pint. And doing that would piss you off very fast. My only gripe is that they charge for bar nuts.
