Amazing experience. The place is very small but it made it feel cozy in the middle of the ghent neighborhood. The service was great. Pendulum Fine Meats is a butcher shop first that just happens to offer food. I wanted a charcuterie board which I found out is a problem because they make them to order in advance. They don't make charcuterie boards on the spot, you have to order them 24 hours in advance. So I just ordered some meat and made the best of it. In the end it was great. There is all kinds of meat, cheese, lunch meat and things to go with them like bread, nuts, honey, etc. They also have a decent craft beer selection. The service was exceptional except for the charcuterie hiccup. The young lady who was cutting my meat and I were having some communication problems. Not because we spoke a different language, but because I was kind of asking for something off script. In my ignorance of visiting here for the first time, I didn't know the rules. I will know for next time. So my overall impression as a first timer is a 3.5 stars, but will round up to 4 because the other patrons were having a great experience. read more

Pendulum has been the local butcher for as long as I've lived here. Their cuts are delicious and well trimmed, their deli meats are delicious, and when i've been lucky enough to catch their terrine or other case special like their sausages it's been fantastic. The four parts of the business are all equally great - the frozen meat they trim themselves, their case meat of fresh cuts, their hot sandwiches, and their assortment of curated wines and beer. ALL are done with care and the seasoned taste buds of the super friendly staff. Highly recommend Pendulum for your next lunch, but I've also benefitted from their Communtiy Support Agriculture (CSA) boxes since Covid. For $50 every two weeks you get equal to or greater value of fresh and frozen products of their own creation - coupled with recipes on how to use them. Pickup is bi-weekly and our highlight of the week as enjoy whatever has been picked for us. We love Pendulum! read more

Pendulum is truly a gem. It quickly jumped up to one of my favorite spots for lunch in all of Hampton Roads, but definitely in Norfolk. I do love the quaint feel of Ghent in general, but love this specific spot that is just a bit off the main road. They do have their own parking lot, which in theory, is wildly convenient but it is often full. We came on a Friday for lunch and it was definitely busy but we were able to snag a great table outside to enjoy the weather. They offer some great draft beers, wine and house sangria. The sangria was delicious and refreshing. Food was superb. Truly incredible. Both sandwiches that we had (The Butcher and the Cuban) were 10/10 and would absolutely order again. My only regret is that I did not try this place sooner; I've driven by it so many times without popping in. That was my loss. The staff are great. The restaurant is always clean. It's a locally owned small business that is owner operated. They sell an assortment of fresh butchered meats as well as imported goods such as pasta and wine and olive oil from Italy but I love that they also offer local wine selections. They offer fresh baked goods such as desserts and breads. Their sweet focaccia is to die for ! It always sells out pretty quickly. They also offer a lunch menu that features burgers and sandwiches which are also great. This is one of my top 10 Norfolk eateries for sure ! read more

It's a favorite lunch spot I go to whenever I can. it boasts an impressive menu of burgers and sandwiches in addiction to the butcher counter staples and any meat cut you can think of, homemade sausages, and interesting products like tinned fishes, lard, rilette, and local goodies. Remember, this is a butcher shop sk you can also just come in and order your quality meats. A good variety. I got the Big Tex with a salad. Brisket was tender and melt in your mouth - exactly what you'd want in your brisket. Sauces and toppings complimented each other really well. Highly recommend. They have a good selections of beers, wines, and non alcoholic drinks - you can pay for everything upfront or after you finish eating or drinking. Interior is nice and rustic. Upon arrival you wouldn't expect a front store inside with the home vibes it gives. But the outside definitely mimics the inside. Dana, her husband and staff are super friendly and make you feel comfortable like you're at home. Took the sausage making class with my husband and would recommend the class to everyone. This is one of Norfolk's gems. This butcher shop also doubles as a luncheonette throughout the week and I loveee it. The staff are super friendly and charming, there's a large array of cool products to try like juices teas and wine. There are also homemade desserts that are always in rotation (one of my faves is the apple cheesecake). My favorite thing to order is The Shepard, which is a Lamb Burger that has goat cheese, peppers and fresh greens. I also love their fries that come with the most amazing garlic aioli. Coming here is always a mini adventure as there's so many books and signs etc. to look at and browse as you wait for your food. Ah, Pendulum. Just a gem of a neighborhood spot. I frequently come for the lunch sandwiches (so good!) but they also have a selection of freshly butchered meats for purchase. For my needs: lunch. My favorite sandwich is "The Butcher" which is roast beef, cheese, caramelized onions, and ancho aioli. Never disappoints. I hear their other menu items are great so next time I may tear myself away to try something new! Side options are chips, fries, or salad. I love that the fries automatically come with a aioli on the side for dipping! I usually grab a beer along with: they have a large can beer selection to be enjoyed in-house or to-go. Staff is super nice. On my last visit, one employee (I hate that I don't know his name!) remembered my beer preferences and suggested a beer for me that I ended up loving. I usually get take out so make convo while I'm waiting but the one time I ate it, service was also very friendly and prompt. It's a cute spot inside. It looks like a converted home so their are tables grouped in a couple different rooms. Outdoor seating is also available. While you wait, they also have a nice selection of specialty goods to browse. Gourmet chocolate bars, specialty canned goods, and a number of interesting items. I love trying places I've seen on food network so when I knew I would be in Virginia for the weekend I made sure I would have time to stop by Pendulum for some meats from their market. To s understand my excitement about visiting this store, I even went to so far as to buy a cooler and gel ice packs to ensure my purchases would make it back to Texas safely. Cute location in what appears to nice, hip area. Saw lots of stores and restaurants reminiscent of a old school downtown area. Anyway, back to Pendulum. It's a true butcher shop. Sandwiches are available for purchase using the meats sold at the store, and they seem to be popular as lots of people came in to purchase while I was there. But my focus was the meats lol. I wish I had gotten the name of the gentleman who helped me because he was so nice and patient. I had many questions and took forever to make decisions because I wanted to make sure that I picked a good selection of meats to try. I picked sweet and hot sopressata, deli ham, and 3 different sausages. I was told everything was made in house which is awesome. I made sure not to write this review until I made it back to Texas and tried at least some of the food. Man!! The sopressata was good but the deli ham....DELICIOUS! My gf said it's some of the best ham she's ever tried. Can't wait to grill up the sausage. I'll be sure to update my review once I've tried it. I came with a couple of friends, and I have to say this spot is nice, lots of unique items in the store. For example I was able to pick up 2 dozen pasture raised eggs for cheaper than the grocery store. I ordered The Butcher, a Roast Beef sandwich on Focaccia bread, and an order of Fries. The sandwich was delicious. The beef was tender, the bread crispy outside, and the fries were really good. Definitely put this spot on your list. One of the few really high-quality places in Norfolk that I wish was closer to back home in NYC. They take their craft seriously, and everything I've had here is delicious and well made. Their sandwich menu is great, and their burger is 100% one of the better burgers I've had. Juicy, thick patties with buttery, warm bun. Throw some of their hot sauce on there for sure (it's not too spicy at all). Don't sleep on their fries either - the sauce and pieces of roasted garlic are to die for. My parents get a CSA box from here and went out of town during a weekly pickup so I did it for them and oh my goodness.. I was in heaven. Not sure why it took so long for me to find this gem about a mile from my house, but here we are! They are a whole animal butcher shop that has an awesome selection of meats with a rotation of homemade sausage changing every so often and well as a variety of other things. Pendulum Fine Meats is a Norfolk Gem that's hiding in plain sight. For years I would drive right by it, and even park in their parking lot on my way to other restaurants and I never paid it any mind because I thought it was just a butcher shop/grocery. Little did I know they make an array of different sandwiches here. Funny enough, I saw them on an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri while staying in a hotel in Washington DC, which encouraged me to stop in and try them out. "The Count" Monte Cristo sandwich was arguably the best sandwich I've had in a long time. I'm still thinking about how good it was to be quite honest. The quality of the meat was superb, and the house-made egg battered white bread was everything. They didn't use sweet French toast bread, which, I'm not used to, but it was still the best Monet Cristo I've had despite that; in addition, the herbed fries served with smoked garlic aïoli complimented my sandwich perfectly. I was overall very pleased with my lunch here. I cannot wait to stop in again and try more of their sandwiches. I've got my eye on their burger. I hear is only $6 on Fridays!
