TASTE has quickly become one of my absolute favorite spots in Suffolk. I've loved just about everything I've tried on the menu, and this visit was no exception. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon after church and ordered the chicken salad sandwich (Freemason). Fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I was craving. When the weather's nice, I always try to grab a seat on the patio. It's such a relaxing spot to enjoy a good meal and soak up a little sunshine. Also, I have to shout out their potato salad is one of the best around. Creamy, just the right amount of seasoning, and always hits the spot. Taste is an old staple in our area, one that was much better before Covid, than it is currently. I was feeling peckish and so my sweet husband of 51 years thought... "Let's go to Taste!" Based on visits over the past 5 years, which have been spaced further and further apart, I was hesitant. And my hesitancy proved to have been warranted. Husband's Northender on Multi grain My Princess Anne also on multi grain. Bread was so dry and stale that I simply struggled to eat the filling. The tomatoes were that hard, white inner core that most people would not feature on a sandwich. Finally in frustration I walked up and asked for a slice of baguette, which was the main meal's only redemption. Let's not even talk about what has become barely a step up from snack pack desserts. Both my (Bakehouse--oh my gosh, are they kidding?) gold brownie and my husband's blueberry mishmash had one bite from them before they too went straight into the trash. (Both tasted more of chemical, than of food) Sadly, what used to be one of our favorite weekly visits pre-Covid, has become less than lackluster, and far from its name. Rather it should be renamed yet again, from the original, Taste Unlimited, to Taste and now should be called, Tasteless. For the price of $50, one would think the meal would at least be edible. Moved up to about a 4.5. This place is a staple of us to visit when we want to bring our dog with us. Having the ability to bring her with us seems to be a winner and definitely kicks this up a notch in the places to go. The biggest winner is that my daughter's taste buds are changing and she now likes some of the sandwiches that they have. She shares a sandwich with my wife and it is a win win all around. From our previous review, it seems like they've improved the quality of the food by improving the quantity of what we receive. I was in the neighborhood in Suffolk and decided to go to Taste because I wanted a light sandwich. Every previous experience I had at this Taste has been pretty good and the food was delicious. The Spring menu has its variety of salads, bowls, wraps, sandwiches, smoothies, soups, etc. There is an option to "make it a meal." They add a bag of small chips or an apple and fountain drink to any sandwich, salad, bowl, or wrap. Another option is "make it a sweet meal" which is the same as above except for a fresh bake cookie is added to the meal. Finally, I decided to "create my own classic sandwich" and to "make it a meal combo." Oven roasted turkey, baked ham, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, mustard and mayo was sandwiched into a lightly buttered croissant. A small bag of dill pickle chips and a unsweet tea made it a combo meal. The staff brought out my sandwich and the taste of all food was good. The atmosphere in the dining area was relaxing. The beach club has been my favorite since I found out about Taste in 2018. I always make it a combo and I get the Beach Club, Boylan Black Cherry soda (bottle or fountain w/ light ice) , and a bag of Mama Zuma's chips. The Northender is also a good choice and falls as my second favorite sandwich from Taste. The house dressing from here is soooo good, and they also sell a bottle of it which could be a good addition to homemade sandwiches and wraps. I order an extra side of house dressing just incase they didn't put enough but it never hurts to add a bit extra when they do lol (; It is always clean inside, there's great options for desserts, ready-to-eat meals, snacks & drinks, and plenty of quick gift options. I love this location and the service is normally quick, however, the staff could be a bit friendlier or at least seem more approachable when going to place your order. As far as cost, 2 meals usually range to be about $35-$40. The consistency is there and they've never messed up my order once, so you get what you pay for with freshness and quality. read more

I was staying next door at the Hilton and a coworker recommended Taste. I am new to Virginia and had never heard of them. The restaurant was clean and the staff was very friendly. I opted for a Cobb salad and subbed cheddar for the Bleu cheese. The salad came with a piece of bread which was a bit plain and a little dry. The salad was yummy, filled with chicken, bacon and fresh veggies, although the lettuce wasn't drained thoroughly and was a bit watery. The garlic croutons were especially good. I do a lot of catering and these guys are my go-to. Try their soups of you have never had them-- delicious! We ordered our Thanksgiving dinner from this store. The turkey breast was not a herb roasted turkey has advertised, it was a deli slicing breast with a grizzly loose skin on top. It was rubbery deli meat. The carrots after cooking for 45 minutes, as directed, were hard as a rock and not edible. The house made gravy was brown sludge. It didn't taste like turkey because the turkey was not roasted, it was deli meat. The sweet potatoes were edible, but the mashed potatoes were lumpy and pasty. Really, don't ever use them for catering. It was sub par, at best. My husband wanted to order from Harris, but I have great sandwiches there. They should stick with sandwiches. Taste is a staple throughout Coastal Virginia. They have locations in several cities; I visited the location in the Harbourview section of Suffolk. The service is always good. You can dine in (or outside weather permitting) as they have a good amount of tables or take your food to go. I love their sandwiches, which have a great variety of breads, cheeses, meats, and vegetarian options for non-meat eaters. I typically get the chicken Caesar salad plus bacon. But, my new fave is their Granny Goat salad, which was simply divine. It has roasted chicken, Granny smith apples, candies walnuts, and goat cheese...LOVED the flavors!! And they give great portions. I've gotten quite a few things from here before and just absolutely love their products! I try to swing by every time I visit my friend in Suffolk as we don't have any Taste branches in NoVa. It was super convenient that they are open on Sundays because the other location is closed. My friends and I perused their selection and I always get my favorites- cheddar cheese straws and parmesan crackers but they didn't have any of the parmesan crackers this time. I ended up just getting the cheese straws and some of their bread ends which are great for sandwiches? Such a steal for $0.99! My friends loved their little mermaid candies which were more line mermaid gummies. They were super cute and tasty. My friend got their pimiento cheese and Virginia nuts. They also have a lot of interesting and yummy-looking drinks. My friend got one that is CBD infused. She was a fan! I also shared my giant oatmeal raisin cookie and we devoured it in no time. I was staying next door at the Hilton for work and just wanted something fast for my last night's dinner. A coworker recommended Taste before I left Maryland, so I thought it was perfect. The Freemason sandwich was the yummiest sandwich I had the whole 4 days I was in Suffolk. I also had a cup of the Brunswick Stew. I wish I had gotten a bowl instead! I will be trying to recreate both now that I am home. I plan to go back to eat at Taste as often as I am in that part of Virginia. I wish they were closer! Meh... To be set up as a mini foodie paradise, I expected a lot more from the food. Taste under delivered in a major way. I ordered the Catwich (fried catfish sandwich) because anyone who knows me knows I absolutely love catfish. Unfortunately, my sandwich included a blackened and obviously overcooked bun, and a soggy, bland piece of catfish. There was no crispness or crunch from the fried filet... in fact, in tasted as if it had been microwaved. Also, the fish tasted like it had not been cleaned well. No good. I had to end this meal on a high note, so I ordered some of their Belgian chocolate chip gelato. Much better. Creamy, rich and delicious. It wasn't enough to make me forget the catfish, but it was a good start. Aside from the dirty, tasteless catfish, the reason I gave this place such a low rating was the staff. The cashier seemed to want to spend my money (or not) for me. I was interested in buying some Artisan chocolates that they had on display at the counter. As I'm reviewing the label to learn more about them, the cashier offers her unsolicited opinion, stating, "Oh... those are expensive." Really? Hmm. Taste is a great lunch spot. It is both a restaurant and a specialty shop. You can shop around for peanuts, cheese spreads, crackers, chips, & wines or dine in at the restaurant. Whenever you go in, they have sample hors d'oeuvre to try and product samples of the nuts as well. If you're interested in the restaurant, you should place your order, find a seat, and they'll bring your meal to you. They have several soups, salads, and sandwiches to try that range from $10-$12. Drinks, chips, and bakery items are a la carte. My favorite is the route 11 Chesapeake old bag There are also weekly specials which allow you to try different items at a lower price--$10 for a sandwich, chip, and drink. I dropped by before a movie for a quick bite if lunch. This place is great! They have delicious sandwiches, salads and prepackaged items to take to go. We do not just use our sense of taste when we walk into a restaurant and enjoy a meal. All of our five senses are utilized when we explore our food and the atmosphere that surrounds us. That is definitely what happened when I arrived at TASTE Unlimited (TU) at Harbourview in North Suffolk the other day. While this is my first review for TU, this wasn't my first experience with them; I have been to the Chesapeake location twice, once at Virginia Beach, and now twice at the new Suffolk store. Of course, I will write about this particular location, but all of TU's stores have the same concept throughout. The original store was Hilltop West in Virginia Beach back in 1973--even older than me! Sight. The Suffolk location is huge and open. The second your eyes look around, you see immensely tall ceilings and windows; industrial décor; friendly faces at the counter waiting to help; and shelves full of enticing specialty items. Just the sight of TU makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. Smell. What is the most important thing when you first walk into a restaurant? Perhaps it is the smell. Freshly baked bread is one of the best aromas in the world and TU makes their own French bread right there in the shop. Their homemade gelato also made its way to my nose. Yummy! Hearing. The one negative about TU is that those very tall ceilings can make for lots of loud noise. The day that I ate my lunch inside wasn't even that busy, but it was still a cacophony of people, metal chairs, and business being conducted. If the weather is decent, I would recommend eating outside at the tables. Touch. Touch is foreplay before the big moment. I love the white paper TU uses to wrap around the sandwiches, and label them. The feel of unwrapping the packaging, picking up the bread to see what is inside, moving around the tomato or the avocado to make sure it's perfect--it's all part of the process. TASTE. While all five senses are important, TASTE is the one that gives us such pleasure. My first bite of the Northender sandwich was a satisfying balance of heavenly deliciousness. Their homemade French bread was mostly soft, but had some crusty parts, too. The slightly sweet honey smoked turkey, with the nice salty hardwood bacon that gave a bit of a crunch--combined with creamy Havarti, fresh tomato, romaine, basil mayo and that ever-loving avocado. Perfecto. I am so glad that TU decided to add Suffolk to their family. While their prices are a bit high, quality ingredients and local foods are the key. Welcome to the neighborhood, TU! read more

I checked my yelp app and it told me that they were open so are went in. (Shameless plug) I walked in the first noticed how clean this place was. They lay out is very spacious. To give you an idea think a mini whole foods. That's the king of vibe I got when walking inside. The have outdoor and indoor seating as well. The service was good. The staff were all smiling and friendly. That goes a long way with me. Good food and bad service will not get any repeat service from me. This place has good food and good service.. I am a frequent patron of Taste Unlimited in Suffolk but was extremely disappointed in my most recent visit this evening. Yes, I realize I walked into the establishment 20 minutes before closing but I knew what I wanted and promptly placed my order which was the Caprese Chicken Salad Shaker. Not even 3 minutes later my mother who has been ill texted me with her sandwich order which I promptly placed. When I got home about 45 minutes later. I discovered that my shaker salad definitely was not made to the standard in which Taste Unlimited usually provides. The volume of the salad was lacking and was less than normal and the fresh basil didn't appear to be so fresh. Just like employees I work hard for my money and like to get what I pay for.
