What happened to the first E-Mart adjoined to Costco and Fresh Market? E-Mart occupied the same building as World Market, now with new signs and different merchandise. The new location has only half of what I bought at Jefferson Avenue in Newport News (not the other store on Warwick blvd.) E-Mart was relocated virtually overnight and without warning to Virginia Beach from Newport News. Did an army of marauders lug everything south or was it quantum tunneling and computer modeling that displace matter within space...? World Market in Newport News is the new E-Mart and has only furniture, not the Asian food I was looking for. Instead, I went next door to Fresh Market and bought two bags of red, white and blue potato chips. The woman of color behind the counter knew I understood what they had done. She said something out of context with my shopping trip: "It's my turn now." As if reparations are my duty to the world and I have to hand over the American legacy on a silver platter to make things right. Oh, so that's why you keep moving things around. Okay! Don't look at me if you want 40 acres and a mule because thanks to the local radical left politicians and reverse discrimination I have neither. This is a shell game. But what I really disliked was inventory all over the place...just too messy! I was told by a friend they have a marvelous butcher. That area had a fishy smell. E Mart is located in Virginia Beach off Princess Anne and Baxter. I stopped by here after visiting a church across the street to check out what they had here. I couldn't believe how huge this market was!! It was an international market with plenty of Asian and Middle Eastern products. I was literally blown away by how many aloe drinks they carried - plus another aisle full of drinks. And not just that, they had a variety of other products, for example, a whole section of just dehydrated mushrooms. It was just so fun to peruse the aisles. It was clean and spacious. I didn't see any workers on the floor but the cashier was kind and friendly. They also have plenty of parking here. Overall, pretty cool spot if you want a selection of products and know what you're looking for. Otherwise, you'll get lost in the sea of products. Emart is my go-to Korean/International market on the south side. Although their competitor has its own pros (like takeout counter), I feel like Emart gives off a less chaotic vibe/shopping experience than Grand Mart does. On my most recent visit, I was glad to see them stocking up on more fresh produce and the meat looked fresh and plentiful. I can find all sorts of cuts that I need like bulgogi, pork belly, oxtail, beef bones etc. I haven't had the need to buy any seafood yet and use their fish cleaning services, but they also seemed to have fresh fish/seafood also. Things I love: - pretty extensive produce section with all the typical Asian items like Korean sweet potato, mung bean sprouts, tofu, spinach, watercress, Korean daikon, fresh shiitake mushrooms and the list goes on. - fresh seafood section with cleaning service - they apparently sell fried chicken too, that I have never tried. Let me know if it's good. - Not only do they have Korean/Asian items, they have an aisle dedicated to Latinx products like Goya, snacks, dried peppers and herbs, etc. They also have Middle Eastern and halal products (even yogurts and cheeses in the refrigerated section). - Lots of great items to be found in the refrigerated and frozen sections like fresh noodles, ready to make soups etc. - right by the cash, they have tables set up with Bread Garden items (if you don't know, the bakery is located in NN and she supplies all the Korean grocery stores in the area). My kids and I love the castella cakes! - Last, but not least, the kitchen gadget section! I love finding Korean-style kitchenware and body wash cloths lol. I recently found sweet longanisa here (because I have become obsessed with Filipino breakfasts, thanks to Kitchenfinity) and that sealed the deal for me hahaha. Unfortunately for me, on my most recent visit, not a soul was present. I, literally, was able to amble around behind the counters in search of a store representative to assist. When I attempted to request help, the one employee I found stocking the fruit displays was utterly unable to communicate in English. Has me wondering, at the very least, of the legalities of the employees of this organization. While I appreciate the selections, the freshness and the unique opportunities here, all is lost if the proprietors are unable to communicate with their customers. We were in the are and we decided to stop by to see if they had any particular snacks - while they had a good variety, they didn't have the ones we were looking for. The ramen section was okay, but the prices were definitely on the higher end and not at all competitive. I would love to see more ready-to-eat items, a hot food bar/food court area, and more of a variety in their selections. I was tasked with purchasing fried chicken per my husband's request. My siblings had recommended here & one other place. The store was clean & the deli area is to the right of the front entrance if you wish to acquire said chicken. Currently they are no longer taking fried chicken orders over the phone & no more than 24 pieces. The fried chicken was good! It is advertised as being the Farm Fresh chicken recipe, which I love & where I used to go specifically for. I didn't have time to browse the store, but it seems pretty extensive. read more

Always like to shop Asian groceries at EMart. Yes, it's not as big as Grand Mart but that's exactly the reason why I like it - it doesn't feel overcrowded with stuff, sometimes having too many things give you the impression of clutter, less care given to Organization and cleanliness. The produce section has fresh and reasonably priced items. I like it that they carry all types of cabbages. They also have a huge selection of rice conveniently stacked by the entrance to carry them straight to the cashier then to your car.I also like EMart's household section, you can find some hard to find items. read more

I ran into Emart for a few quick things. I got some chicken, some produce, and seafood. This store has alot of different ethnicities and cultures of food. There's a large selection of produce. They also have fresh seafood . I normally like getting produce here because its sometimes cheaper than regular grocery stores. If you come before 5 they sell fried and baked chicken with sides. Their chicken is good. I like the frozen section. They have Indian food, asian food, mexican food, and more. They now sell Korean corn dogs so i was kinda happy about that... I had been craving Ube all week, to my surprise they had ube ice cream now... It was $14, "shut the front door"!!! For purple ice cream. Why? I mean its delicious but $14 delicious it is not... Who am i kidding, I'm saving up and coming back for that..lol... I mean inflation is real. They also sell Dong's Lumpia. Which tasted pretty decent.. Don't forget the sweet chili sauce because its a must. I stood there for 10 minutes looking at all the sauce options. It was a lot of choices.. I had to eventually eenie meenie miney moe it, because i didn't know which was best.. I like the things i find here and they have a nice selection of teas also. Emart is muh spot! But i don't buy regular grocery items from here because they're usually high priced and occasionally some things are expired. If your looking to make international foods this is the place to go. E mart got it going on because this place has almost EVERYTHING. I mean the place has international food, fresh seafood, candles, wigs, CBD beverages... We stopped by E mart because another place did not have what we were looking for, but E mart had everything we wanted and more. Shoot, I randomly found E mart's yock-a-mein section. When you walk in, it looks a little cluttered, but in an organized manner (if that makes sense). The store's prices are pretty standard compared to other places in the area. Based on our quick visit, I have a feeling that E mart will be our go-to place for seafood and fish items. When dropping by, I recommend walking around the entire store because you might find some unexpected, but necessary, items. read more

Grocery shopping in Virginia Beach, Virginia... This was our first stop on our grocery shopping tour... And it was amazing! E Mart is an international grocery store with everything you can imagine! From durian and miso... to lumpia wrappers and Sriracha sauce... The items were all there - even preserved "thousand year old eggs" and salted duck eggs! I was surprised to see Honey Butter snacks from Korea! E Mart also had takeout containers, household implements, cooking supplies, cleaning detergent, noodles, rice, ...everything! My friend was looking for nori to make musubi. She found many varieties and picked the most economical one. We also got some Indian cookies for snacks for the camping trip at a reasonable price! I just moved to VA and I have been looking for Soju. I was pretty spoiled in Las Vegas, where I can find every flavor by Jinro and Good day from XO liqour. Here however, it's a bit harder to find all the flavors and I'm going to assume it's just due to distribution or VAs weird liqour laws. E Mart is about the best I can find so far. Been here a few times and they have a decent selection of flavors, though no Jinro. The brand they carry is 'Good Friends'. Which is pretty decent. So far the flavors I have seen here is Green Grape, Apple, Pineapple, Strawberry, Peach, Mangosteen and Blueberry. The best flavors from this brand is Green Grape and Peach. Mangosteen is kinda syrupy. Pineapple is just... Not good.... But not nearly as bad as a chocolate mint soju I had before. E mart itself is pretty cool. There's lots of great snacks, pretty decent produce and lots of good fresh meat. Staff is always nice. They also carry alot of imported beers and sakes, which is super cool! I spend about an hour here going through each aisle to grab a few random things to try every time a I visit. I wish they would carry Yogurt soju, as I cannot find it anywhere in VA yet and it is my favorite flavor. But my hunt will continue. read more

I come to E-mart at least twice a month for the last couple of years and just realized i've never written them a review... whoops! E-mart is our go to international market for Asian ingredients. Whether you're looking for greens like Thai Basil to Bok Choy or fruits like dragon fruit or logan, they got you covered here. Their produce selection is pretty vast and I would say it's usually pretty stocked and almost always has what we are looking for. Looking for items for an at home hot pot or KBBQ experience? They got you covered here. They have a good meat selection of Kalbi short ribs, pork belly, beef bulgogi all the way to the frozen meatballs and fish tofu items as well. When in season, they'll also carry items like crawfish and blue crabs as well. I also like coming here for their unique snack selection, which is also fairly extensive. I would say they have a nice variety of Asian snacks from Vietnamese to Chinese to Japanese and everything in between. I recommend carefully combing through their snack offerings as I see they add new items every few months! One of my favorite sections in this whole store is their dried packaged noodle section - I honestly think they have the biggest selection in all of the international markets in the area. I especially like seeing all of the different types of ramen they have to offer. Most of the employees are fairly friendly and they get you in and out pretty quickly. Don't forget to get some fried chicken from their deli department before you leave! Emart is awesome! They have a vast variety of vegetables, fruits, authentic treats and foods. I enjoyed the Mexican sweet breads located towards the front of the store. They also have the rice I grew up eating often- the Canilla rice. I also found paletas, gelatinas, and bubbaloo candies just like in my Tias store in Guatemala. People were so friendly and helpful. I love how stocked it was. I love the setup of the place and how accessible everything is inside. I am looking forward for my next visit. read more

Great place to find items you wouldn't find in a traditional grocery store! They sell international items - many Asian but also stock Latin and European wares. I enjoy coming here for Filipino candies and snacks, Japanese drinks and hard-to-find teas, as well as to purchase their fried chicken. Rumor has it that it is the original recipe from the now-closed Farm Fresh grocery chain. Note: the deli is closes at 5pm, and they are currently closed on Mondays as of this review. This is a international market where one can do all their shopping. I absolutely LOVE Korean pears. They have a totally different taste than other pears. They're expensive but worth every penny. The pears are large. So you have 2 servings with one. E mart is my "Go To" store for Korean Pears, Sweet Rice Cakes and many other yummies, They even have some small appliances. I noticed my awesome favorite rice cooker on my last visit. The store is located in a former Farm Fresh store in the shopping center at the corner of Baxter & Princess Anne road in Kempsville. Access is easy from both Town Center and other parts of town. Parking is plentiful and very close to the store. Employees are friendly & helpful. The aisles are wide and easy to navigate. During the COVID crisis I am having all my groceries delivered. But this store doesn't have a delivery service. I went in wearing a mask to purchase my Korean Pears. And I felt safe. E-Mart. I think they are try to play off the popular H-Mart but I am not trying to get anyone sued here. Besides H-Mart is primarily an Asian supermarket. Besides E being the most used letter in the English language perhaps the E stands for everything. It is pretty good for an international grocer in this area and there are a few selections but among all of them in the Hampton Roads area this is the cleanest. Many are a hit and miss depending on what you are looking for as some cater more to this specific food cuisine over others. Still I think E-mart does a better job at having a more diverse and I believe an attempt to cater to more people. It is usually dictated by the area and sales of what is being bought but in many international grocers' certain items are non existent but others are in abundance. One day I was looking for a certain mix and after stopping at multiple stores I found that E-Mart was the only one to have what I was looking for. There is a pretty good sized area serving cooked food but if you expecting to find items like some more exotic cuisine keep looking. It is the basics of fried chicken, potato/macaroni salad and other goods you typically see for plate lunches. I have yet to try it but the times during lunch I have been there I see a small line waiting to grab meals to go. Always a good sign. Overall a good spot to checkout if you looking to get some hard to find items or just want to try something new to cook. The world is bigger than your neighborhood so start exploring by trying something new. read more

I will start by saying that I love shopping at E-mart. The service that i received yesterday over grill chicken gravy was totally unacceptable. The lady working the chicken section should not be working in customer service. I stopped by to pick up grill chicken and fried chicken. I asked politely did she have anymore grill chicken. She stated no that was all she had. I said i will take the last four grill chicken and fried chicken. I asked can i get some of the grill chicken sauce. I asked for an additional container and this lady had a attitude about that. I'm like it is really not that serious over sauce. If i have to pay for a additional container that is not an issue for me. This lady made the additional container and slam it down on the counter. The gentleman standing behind of me was all of that over some sauce that she will be throwing out is crazy. I had just been release from the hospital and did not feel like cooking. I proceeded to the front and paid for my two bag of chicken. Now as a paying customer this type of service is very unprofessional. Although i live right nearby i will drive to the E-mart on Newtown and spend my money where i will feel valued. For her to feel comfortable slamming down a product I'm paying for lets me to know she has been getting away with this behavior. read more

Don't be fooled by the modest exterior of this store! This is an Asian grocery store that truly has everything you need to cook authentic Asian cuisines at home. Emart is like having all the items I ever purchase at Hmart, Lotte, and 99Ranch all available in one store. It's amazing. I can actually buy everything I need to fix some Japanese udon, yakisoba, and takoyaki, and simultaneously able to purchase all the ingredients I need to make some tom kha gai, green curry, and pad kra pow. It also has a great selection of all the Lee Kum Kee and Healthy Boy brand condiments to create char siu, mapo tofu, and everything else you can imagine fixing at home. I was also very impressed by the fresh selections of Thai holy basil and chives at a reasonable price. The houseware section also has great selections of cooking tools including Japanese nonstick frying pans. So if you are in need of some good butcher knives, this is a good place to go. The only things I really really really wish they carried was fresh galangal and kefir lime leaves. Otherwise the store eliminated any and all needs for me to go elsewhere for Asian grocery shopping. As a side note, the parking is plenty and the cash wrap experience is fast and painless. They also take Amex, which is a plus. read more

I was looking for furikake and the specific one I was looking for is sold out everywhere, including here, but I found other stuff that I couldn't resist. It's clean, well stocked, and doesn't have that "Oriental Market" smell--although the smell doesn't bother me (bothers my husband tho). They sell "Farm Fresh" chicken--I guess they have the recipe. I haven't tried it but I saw the big sign outside and there were a few people in line waiting for the chicken. Will go back for that. read more

As of this review I've only been once. I'm trying to cook more food from my parents countries in the Caribbean. They have both the Trinidadian and Jamaican marinades and spices I was looking for. They also have the purple skin sweet potatoes so I was set. Nice (but kind of tight) produce section with plenty to choose from. Wide variety of products to make what you want from any country's cuisine, I'd imagine. You can buy some dried foods in bulk. Multiple LARGE brands of rice available at thr front of the store when I went. There's a seafood section but i didnt venture over there. Very well stocked store and not too crowded on a Monday late morning. Perfect. If you get hungry from shopping they do have some pre made food next to the produce section. Warning‼‼ they sell 6 MONTH old meat!!! I purchased this package of ground beef late April 2020. I thawed it, started to cook it then I start smelling something foul. I went through the garbage to find the package and it says PACK DATE 11.21.19 SELL BY 11.28.19 THIS MEAT NEEDED TO BE GONE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. CLEARLY YOU WANT ME TO DIE! How dare they sell 6 month meat. Not to mention during a pandemic when everyone is doing their best to stay healthy. Granted it is my responsibility to look at dates but 6 MONTHS come on this has got to be IILEGAL. The shelves were a little bare but what type of business just says HEY LET'S PULL OUT THE 6 MONTH OLD MEAT! PLEASE BE CAREFUL. Probably one of my favorite Asian/International grocery stores at the moment. You wouldn't believe me if I told you it smells absolutely nice in here! You have to come in and see for yourself. Now, if you've EVER stepped foot in any international grocery store you probably already know to hold your breath before you walk in! Y'all know what I'm talking about. Taking that first whiff can sometimes make ya wanna gag, does it not? (Don't lie!) I love that Señor in the hot food department is soooo friendly and funny. He always makes me feel like he's missed seeing my face - whether or not he means it or if he really remembers me. I just like how it makes me feel. *Shrug* He always makes it a point to tell me he just made the fried rice so I should bring some home, or that he fried the chicken just for me. (Oh yeah, that's right, y'all.... They sell "Farm Fresh Chicken" if you didn't know.) Anyway, it's stuff like that, that matters! He makes some of the BEST tasting fresh guacamole, by the way. You have to get it. And the chips? Delicious as well! EMart carries lots of meat for all your needs - grilling, stewing, braising, and even for Shabu Shabu'ing! My family loves Korean cuisine so it's nice that they have freshly prepared banchan to take home and enjoy (i.e. kimchi, seaweed salad, bean sprouts, etc). The shelves are pretty well stocked with a nice variety of things for all types of folks - American, Spanish, Asian, whomever. They offer military discount, too, if that applies to you like it does to me! If you're having a party, they have a small catering menu to order certain things such as empanadas, the aforementioned fried chicken, and lumpia. I'm sure there other things but I can't remember.
