Great little grocery store in central Virginia Beach! It's in a little shopping center right off of Va Beach Blvd and Aragona, easy to find/get to and a good amount of parking. As other reviewers have said, it IS small. But the great thing is, they've managed to pack a whole lot into the small space, so you'll be able to find a lot of things you may be looking for. I personally wasn't looking for anything specific, just went to browse around. They have refrigerated and freezers on the right side (with gyoza, frozen seafood, frozen apps), condiments and sauces towards the back, dishware and non-food related things on the left wall. more things in the middle (chopsticks, household items). They have several types of boxed curry roux in the back, which I was really happy to find (Java curry and Vermont curry as well as the Golden curry). Kewpie mayo, sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, etc. They have a few snacks on the left side of the wall and plenty of drinks in the refrigerated case up front and near the cash register. They also have desserts like matcha ice cream, mochi ice cream and some dessert breads in their coolers. Overall, a great little store, if you need to pop in real quick to pick up some Japanese ingredients. The employees/owners are really nice and polite. I love an oriental store and I'm into Japanese culture, so finding this gem was happiness for me. It's in a small store front and it's like walking into your parent's food pantry to collect stuff for your home. The gentleman who I believe is the owner was very nice and helpful and answered all my questions. A lot of products were Japanese, so I was asking! LOL I love the cool finds from the snacks, noodles, frozen veggies, frozen fish, frozen fried rice, juices, onigiri and etc! Went to Japan for the very first time a few months ago and was missing some of the food I had over there. I decided to make some Miso soup and looked up Japanese grocery stores in the area. I visited J mart for the very first time a few weeks ago and this place is fairly small. But they had a decent selection of Japanese specific items: snacks, cooking spices, frozen foods (sweets and savory), variety of different noodles and ramen, etc. I just needed a few items to make miso soup and they had the dashi and wakame seaweed that I was looking for. I also picked up a few fun Japanese snacks as well. The employee was fine and the prices are kind of high but these are speciality items you may not be able to find anywhere else though. read more

J Mart is a small Japanese mini mart that offers sauces, seasonings, ready-to-eat packets, fresh and frozen ingredients, rice cookers, assorted candy, various gift items, and sake. The place is small and cute, and I enjoyed checking out their huge tub of Japanese curry, their frozen croquettes, and their aesthetically-pleasing bottles of sake. We bought a couple of snacks to try out; we noticed that even though this wasn't a chain or anything the prices were actually comparable, if not slightly cheaper! I'd love to see more of a selection of candies and snacks, though, as I know there are some awesome and more unique items that can be enjoyed! If they added some stationery/greeting cards, that would be so amazing, as I'm a huge collector of these things! The employee in there was so welcoming and friendly, and allowed patrons to peruse with no hassle. Although J Mart is small in size, it didn't feel cramped. It had the things I needed on my list and good selections (to include fresh wasabi and frozen kamaboko). Although some items were expensive, most of their items are comparable to other stores. The items that were a bit more pricey were specific brands of products (sesame oil and other sauces) that I haven't found in other stores. Location was easy to find and there is a good amount of parking in front of the store. The cashier was friendly and answered questions that I had. It's a really, really, small grocery store, and maybe this review is biased a little since my friend's family owns it, but it really is nice! I mainly go here for the baked goods, which they get from Bread Garden in newport news (a korean bakery). If they have it, buy the korean cheesecake, soooooooo good. It's not like an american cheesecake, or a french cheesecake, or even a japanese cheesecake. It really is it's own category, like if a pound cake and a sponge cake had a baby, and then that baby had a baby with a cheesecake. BOOM, there's my baby, my korean cheesecake baby. Okay, besides that. They'll have little cookies, buns, and sometimes sushi to go, and it's fresh (unlike these giant super international/asian marts, where it gets stale and bleck). They have noodles, curry, seasonings, and a nice assortment of japanese snacks you won't find in other stores around here (not even Ichiban near lynnhaven, but I like them too =] ). They got a little fridge for drinks, so it's nice and chilled too. They got bigger fridges full of ingredients to be cooked, or ready to cook items. They also got a nice selection of rice. This is a cozy Japanese food shop. I stop by once in while since I can find always interesting things and products you cannot find in Ichiban Japanese Market. Sometimes price is set little bid higher than Ichiban, but you can have you cannot find things at Ichiban you can find here. read more

This is is very small, like the size of a guest bedroom. I came here specifically for seaweed salad. I spent a lot considering how small the container was, I think I spent around $9. It lasted me about 3 days since I like to eat it with main dishes however I thought the store itself was nice, it was pretty pricey though and hope their getting enough business. read more

It is small! But the first thing I noticed upon entrance was how delightful it smelled in here. Like fresh laundry! It is small as far as groceries go, but they have all of the essentials. Spices, oils, tons of noodles, harder to locate produce like lotus root and mushrooms. Lots of cool bath products and stuff, not the trinkets and junk you usually see. I found exactly what I was looking for, udon noodles that weren't frozen. And my cashier was helpful and cute, he bowed to me a few times! read more

Quiet little shop. Having been stationed overseas I acquired a love of Asian cuisine. When my wife and myself PCS'ed here, we were looking around as it's hard to find a quality specialty shop. This place had all we wanted and a little more. If you need something special they can sometimes help you out with a special order. The clerks that work there are very friendly and always willing to help out. They're also bi-lingual which helps out as you get locals and then you get native japanese speakers there as well shopping. We plan on giving this place more of our business. read more

I feel a little bad rating this shop so low because it seemed so sincere, but I can't justify higher. Like Tiffany L. wrote, this place is small... like, the size of my living room small (no exaggeration). They do have some random Japanese stuff that is probably unique (candies, vey limited pastries on my visit, random asian DVDs), but a lot of what they did have I could get at any other asian market nearby--and likely for a little cheaper. They had a regular refrigerator filled with something...I was a little scared to open it since there wasn't much of a sign on the front saying it was for customers. One thing that I think others might appreciate more was a couple shelves full of cooking spices that might be hard to find? I'm not as familiar with that stuff so I'm not sure if that's true. Overall: I'm sorry to say that I just wasn't too impressed with the selection or the prices. The store is incredibly small, so I'm not sure why there'd be much overhead, but I appreciate the sincerity of the quaintness. I probably won't be back but hopefully some people find something unusual they need here! read more

Lovely small local Japanese mart with an assortment of goods and alcohol. They have books, cooking ware, bath products, frozen and fresh goods, seasonings, and prepackaged goods. I buy the curry, soy sauce (best soy sauce I can find is here), ramen, Japanese beer, sake, and seasonings. Their desserts in the chest freezer is very good as well, I tried the same dessert at a big international store and it was freezer burnt, so I stick to buying the good quality frozen desserts here. The employee is also extremely friendly, but not overbearing. He is happy to help, and lets you know when things will come in stock. They used to sell an extremely hot ghost pepper sauce, I will have to check back in to see when they will start again (very limited batches available from manufacturer). read more

So quaint! I loved this place the moment I walked in. It's been here for 10 years, and for good reason. Genuine Japanese charm and food products. Teas, coffees, sodas, alcohol, fish, gyoza, noodles, rice, seasoning, curry, tableware, bread, and so much more. The owner (I assume) kindly greeted me and helped me with all my questions. He gave great recommendations and after paying he kindly thanked me in Japanese. It was hard not going crazy buying everything there. If you love Japan and its culture, you will love this place. This is my go to place for my Japanese needs! They have everything that I crave from Japan! If they are out of a product, they will even let me know when they expect it in. I can read very little Japanese so they will take their time to tell me how to prepare the food also. read more

Small quiet little store, they don't have a ton of space so it's hard to have large quantities of everything but they nail the important items. Japanese snacks, drinks, candies, noodles, rice and assorted cooking things. They have a little bit of everything. I go here to pick of sauces I can't find in other places, korean/chinese markets. Very good selection of rice - a lot of people might not be able to tell the difference but if you've ever lived in Japan you know the difference between good and bad rice, J Mart has the good stuff! They also have other items besides food - kitchen, home stuff, and they rent Japanese TV Shows and movies - bonus!! Haven't rented anything yet so I'm not sure if they are subtitled for English - update to come later. On our initial visit the clerk was helpful when we asked about the area. He provided info for the area, other market suggestions, as well as resturants and do and don't ideas. He didn't come across as unfriendly, but he left us alone until we initated the conversation and nothing wrong with that in my opinion, I'm sure he assumed that we knew what we were looking for. It can be a little high priced, but I'm not trying to feed an army with what I get from here - like anything else, it's always best to be picky and shop around, but this place with have very authentic, and we have to keep in mind it's imported, not packaged in NYC and shipped down to us. read more

I was excited to have found this place since I miss being home and eating all the foods that I'm used to. They do have quite a bit of stuff ranging from snacks to dried foods to magazines, frozen foods etc etc.. But... I've only been there 3 times in total; 1 time because I was looking for something in particular but they didn't have. The reason to why I've been there so little times is that the people come off as very unfriendly and stuck up. I even bumped into them at a completely different place and they were still unfriendly and stuck up. No matter how smiley and happy I am, they just look at me with a look that is just disturbing and give me a feeling like they just want me to hurry up and leave. SO, I found another Japanese store and I stick with them instead since they're very very friendly and welcoming. read more

I came here to get rice and nori to try making sushi at home. It's a very small shop but they had several options for everything I needed including sushi rolling apparatus. Their prices were pretty reasonable too. I'm not sure how much of their type of wares you could get at a larger Asian grocery store but you might not get the same level of personal service. The guy working at J Mart was REALLY nice and had recommendations to help me pick out what I needed. Oh, and at the top of their receipts it says "Arigato Gozaimasu" - love it!! read more
