Produce super mediocre (once they were completely out of sweet potatoes on a regular day, not a great veg selection). Long checkout lines, no baskets. Multiple mornings there's been nothing fresh in the bakery, only mass produced items. Parking lot is small and always quite full. Is it set up nicely? Yeah. But there are major drawbacks at this location. First: there aren't enough registers manned and even with the self checkout line, lines can be long. Second: there are never enough shopping carts at this location. Third: prices are higher compared to other grocers in the area; as a result we almost exclusively shop here for sales. We are at a disadvantage, this is the only store close to downtown Norfolk, we don't have too many other choices. I try not to drive to the store around 3pm or 4pm. That's the busy time and there are very few parking spots available. Many have to park on the residential streets. More often or not, there are NO carts or baskets. They do an awful job of retrieving the carts from the parking lot and I doubt they redistribute the baskets. During the evening rush, there are one or two cashiers working and a LONG line of customers waiting to use the self-checkout. Either hire more cashiers or buy more self-checkout devices. Never. Any. Carts. Ever. I asked the customer service what the deal was. "We're phasing out the handheld baskets for larger carts." So every aisle is blocked if it's even mildly busy. You cannot move around with everyone in this store having a suburban-size, giant grocery cart. Everyone in the self-checkout has one now because there are no baskets. Six full size carts in a self-checkout area? If you just had a hand basket before, you could go to the second level using the stairs. Now if you need anything like pharmacy, toiletries, or shampoo, you have to wait for the damn elevator. read more

my wife (Handicapped) was screamed at by the register operator at the pharmacy. we were there for an appointment for immunizations. we left the pharmacy area immediately, but did stop to discuss the incident with the store manager. This Ghent location gets pretty busy, especially after 4p, evidenced by their crowded parking lot and long checkout lines. Still, I'm a HT fan for a few reasons: good selection with prolific weekly specials, cleanliness, pizza and sandwich shops on site and, perhaps most importantly, commitment to customer satisfaction. If they don't have an item, they'll readily substitute an item for the same price, even if it's a better/more expensive brand. If an item doesn't ring up correctly, they'll quickly remedy it at the register, no questions asked. We actually use the VIC specials to plan our weekly grocery shopping. I should mention, they're a community minded company; when chairing a small independent school auction, the manager happily donated a $30 gift certificate for the cause. Notably, this store has an upstairs (with an elevator) that stocks even more wine and beer. Decent local craft beer selection (6 mix/match bottles for $9.99). read more

I had no idea this HT was even here until I was in the area after getting my hair done and had to make a quick stop for a few items before a BBQ. The parking lot is not tiny but it felt really crowded and it was pretty busy at 2pm on a random Saturday afternoon. This HT is small and cramped with small aisles and it has an upstairs! I only needed a few items so I was in and out in probably 10 minutes but I did wander around the dry foods aisles and in the frozen section near the ice cream and frozen foods. Checkout was easy and quick - I did self checkout with only 4 things in my bag but I could see how everything in here can get really crowded and cramped if it's really busy during certain periods. It was steady while I was there and it was tight to get around. All in all - I love HT and I like their brands and stores so this one was OK. I didn't spend a huge amount of time in here and it's not my home store but I was able to get what I needed quickly, and get in and out with no issues. read more

Remodels look great here. The staff is always polite and shelves stocked with goodness. They could have a few more cashiers during busy times but all in all a great market. Seafood is my favorite department. Bakery is awesome! I've had 2 cakes made here and they do an awesome job!!! read more

I've never been to a Teeter that was on two floors like this before. Very interesting, but unlike Target on two floors, there were only two elevators and not an escalator. The rest of the store was classic HT with good produce, frozen and groceries. Prices are high as I would expect from Teeter but the quality is there. Let me start with I luv Harris teeter elsewhere , wish I could give them a 10 star rating, but this location struggles to get a one star rating. Fist of all, the parking lot has become packed all the time due to its small size compared to the population it serves, and is packed with its staff vehicles... so many times attempting to shop here after work is futile. The long lines at checkout are unnecessary, open a few more lanes, or if you do t wish to do that, add more self checkout cashes. ( but wait, you don't have to do anything because you are the only grocery store around) Don't ask anyone where something is located, they look at you as if you were speaking a foreign language. Many times shelves are empty, or there is one or two items pulled to the front of the shelf only none behind. So, I try to do my grocery shopping early morning... nice they open at 6 am.....Oops, not today, they are doing floors, there is a not saying they will open today at 7 am. .... so the parking lot is filling up with disgruntled customers all waiting to do our shopping The only reason this place does good business is that there is no competition anywhere nearby. Norfolk downtown and Ghent are in a grocery store void..... It's July 3rd around 11:30 am. I drive into the very busy parking lot attempting to get a spot, it took a while as by the time I was able to get to a spot, someone else drove in. That's ok, I just waited and watched. I saw 2 people park and head across the street to apartment buildings... When will management Wake up here and see that your lot for shoppers is used by the surrounding apartments. Two weeks ago I went at opening and there were many cars parked with condensation on their windows, meaning they have been there all night Why don't you as a store start removing these vehicles and having room for your paying customers? If Whole Foods and Publix had a supermarket baby, they would've called it Harris Teeter. Super clean, large and free samples.There's a sample stand of cookies for kids near the exit. Plenty of parking outside. This is the only grocery store I've been to where you enter on one side of the aisle where the cashier stands to drop off your food, then step to the other side to pay. Awful, awful, AWFUL store! You will be hard pressed to ever find fresh produce here. Everything is either wilting, water logged, molding, about to mold, or has mushy spots. On the very rare chance you'll find a piece of something that isn't about to rot, it will be rotting within a day or two of getting to your house. And you have the pleasure of paying top dollar for produce you won't even get to eat! Went in today and the lettuce area... the leaves were caked onto the front of the shelves (I had to actually SCRAPE lettuce off the price card with my fingernail - EW!), not a single head wasn't wilted and beginning to mold. We're talking dark green and brown mushy leaves stuck all over the display. How does any manager walk by that and NOT notice? Let's talk about the dairy section - CHECK EXPIRATION DATES, cause the people stocking sure don't! Even then it's a Russian roulette type deal as you may bring home a spoiled, $5 gallon of milk that's still a week from it's expiration date (it's happened to us, TWICE). Cashiers are grumpy AF, and get totally confused when you bring your own bags. Oh, and thanks cashier today who bagged a bunch of bananas ON TOP of two loaves of bread. I bought regular bread, but I was totally hoping for flat bread! Unfortunately those of us who live in the downtown/Ghent area are stuck with this crap hole, unless we have the extra time in our day to drive 20 minutes out (are you listening, Trader Joe's?!). Been going here for nearly a decade, this Harris Teeter is a solid all-around store. They keep it clean and they have strong general selection balanced with specialty items. For example, my wife has Celiac disease and has no problem finding what she needs. Just recently, we special ordered a GF frozen pizza type and Management executed--that's what motivated this post. Plain and simple the store sucks, they try to pass themselves off as a Whole Foods but fall ingloriously short. The only thing they have in common is the prices which to me are outrageous, A good 30% higher than anywhere else I've gone and believe me I know my prices. What makes matters worse is the quality and lack selection of the store. If that wasn't bad enough all the cashiers and most of the employees seem to have an attitude, even at the busiest times you're lucky if there are two Manned cashier lanes open. THIS IS A REVIEW FOR THE PIZZA ONLY. (Love the store) Yesterday was pizza Monday at HT in Ghent. You can buy any pie for $7.99. I decided to pick one up on my way home from ODU and cook it later. OK maybe the ones they cook taste better, but the ones you take and bake at home are not so good. I think the problem is that the dough is par-baked You pick one of the cheese take and bakes up at the deli and have the pizza people add the toppings you want. (I had Margherita pizza). The employee added cut tomatoes and dried oregano sprinkles. When I asked about fresh basil she said she didn't add it because when you bake it the basil burns. In the end she added some fresh basil to the package and instructed me to add it after I remove the pizza from the oven. Even the fresh basil couldn't save this pie. It simply was not tasty. Next time I will have to try one they bake at the store and update my review at that time. read more

UPDATE: After an initially disappointing experience with the quality of the produce at this HT location, I have found that the freshness of the food has significantly improved- so much so that I haven't seen fruits or veggies that have gone bad on the shelves in months. The customer service is always good but the other day when me and my fur baby were going to the car in the pouring rain, the gentleman that gets the carts came over with a big umbrella and covered us both until we got into the car. I had a horrible experience with JT when I came in this afternoon to pick a pack of sugar free popsicles that were mistakenly not put in my online order, and I received the regular popsicles with lots of sugar and I am diabetic of 15 years. He was an NO MOOD to deal with me and there's just too much that went wrong to go into and I don't want to raise my blood pressure and sugars. I will advise your management team to do some additional training on your crew beginning with him(I was made aware that he is part of the management team!! THATS SHOCKING) The associate that I spoke on the day of pick up informed me that ALL your popsicles are SUGAR FREE. I then proceeded to read to her the SUGAR CONTENT in the box that I was given, but she said that I could come in and get the sugar free popsicles any time. Nice young lady, extremely misinformed, but professional. JT went into back office and reviewed my order and stated that my order was fine and correct.I am the person that can say that, not him,otherwise I wouldn't be there and be writing a good review. He begrudgingly told me to go back and get it myself. His attitude was not one of a manager. I told him that he was dealing with inappropriately and he said he was. I will move up to regional managers bc this was just so distasteful across the board. There were no apologies. I am so OVER this slow-paced, unfriendly grocery store! We moved here a few months ago, and it is the closest grocery to our home. It seems to be my understanding (I could be wrong) that the goal here to make it a "specialty grocery" experience. However, Every single time I walk in, any hour of the day, customers seem to be the least of their focus. There are too many examples for me to Share here, but I am not surprised by the low stars! Wendy was my cashier today, and I was never greeted, and she was rude! I even softly asked if she was ok- nothing. She seemed upset when I told her I had my own bags. Wow! Despite being a fairly middle-of-the-road grocery store chain, Harris Teeter has prices that are closer to Whole Foods than Food Lion. Unfortunately, the quality of food doesn't match the higher prices - many of their fruits and vegetables are a day or two away from expiration at best. This Harris Teeter does offer build your own salad and build your own Chinese food bars that tend to be passable if you show up early in the day, but ultimately their fresh food and fresh produce sections are nothing special. Harris Teeter features some outstanding deals to VIC card members such as frequent 2 for 1 specials on juices, cheeses and yogurts. Many of their wines, mostly reds, are heavily discounted at any given time as well. This particular Harris Teeter also features a wide variety of beers, from the big Coors/Millers of the world to dozens of delicious, regional breweries such as O'Connors, Smart Mouth and Flying Dog. In terms of ambiance, the store has good lighting and the aisles are clearly labeled, though many look dirty and the white floor has developed a brownish tint over the years due to foot traffic. The customer service is average, but also present should you ever require it. Bottom line: you won't save much or find any good deals at this Harris Teeter without one of their membership cards. With a membership card, you can save anywhere from 5-20% on your average bill depending on how many good deals you can spot. read more
