I was not amazed by this supermarket when I came here. I also would say I had a rather unpleasant check out experience to top it off. I had higher hopes because I had been told what a great supermarket it was. However the space itself is far too small in my opinion. You barely have any room to walk down the aisles let alone have two people in opposite directions walking. It kind of feels like you're winding through a snake's body to get to everything and if you miss an aisle it's a difficult time to get back. I did quickly glance at their berries and fruit and it seemed decent but perhaps a bit on the pricier side, at least when I came. They had a good price on their dairy and seemed to offer a better selection than farm fresh which is all I had to compare to at this point. But overall I just wasn't wowed. When I got online I asked the cashier if she could scan a store card for us so we could get the sale price because we were new and didn't have one yet. She told us no and said we had to go apply for one. So while she was scanning our items my husband went over to customer service to get the application so he could fill it out quickly and get a card. While she was bagging our items she didn't ask if I wanted paper or plastic and was literally throwing my yogurt containers with a foil top into the bag and I asked her if she could place them a little more carefully so they wouldn't puncture and break and she rolled her eyes. Then she finished ringing and there was only one man behind me, and she says the total and I said well that isn't including the sale price and my husband is about to come over with the card. Then she tells me well the card won't work today. Uhmmmm yes they do I have gotten multiple "store reward cards" and all you do is scan it for it to take the sale price. And she starts arguing with me. My husband comes over with the card and she continues to say it's not going to work and I kept asking her to just scan it to try. Then the man behind me is saying use his phone number and she's putting it in before I even said anything and I said I appreciated it but now that I had a card I'd prefer to get the points. She finally scans the card with the words "see I told you about to come out of her mouth" but low and behold it DOES work and she just goes "oh well usually it doesn't". No honey, maybe it takes 24 hours for the phone number to be connected by the card itself always works. That was enough to make me not want to come back here but to be honest I just wasn't impressed with the store itself. read more

Wow. Ghent shoppers are whiney. I've never had any problems here. I guess I've never expected shop employees to carry my groceries or kids to the car or drop everything they were doing immediately to help me. I expect people to get to a reasonable stopping point. I've waited tables my whole life, so maybe I just think it's rude to roll in at 11:59pm and wander around the store for 30 minutes. As far as produce, have never had any problems. I buy bulk or organic kale, peppers, tomatoes, green beans, chicken, and beef. If you aren't brand committed, you can get some really good deals. I don't usually checkout with a cashier. I'm capable of scanning and bagging my own stuff. They also generally have an excellent discount basket (or five) on the second floor next to the wine. Last week, I picked up a whole bunch of cover girl (expensive isn generally $10) foundation for about $3. I have also picked up wine, hair care products, and even vitamins at a steal from those carts. I think most of the negative reviews are coming from spoiled ghent hipsters. If you want them to pour you wine and give you a foot massage, head to changes, not the grocery store. read more

I'd give this place 5 stars if they had Walmart like prices. Except they don't, so be prepared to spend $$$. This place is always clean whenever I happen to stroll in to grab a few things. At certain time of the day, there can be a crowd of people, especially in the food/produce area. None-the-less, they always seem to have stock of almost everything that I need. This is a two floor supermarket, they have the goodies (wine) on the 2nd floor, along with other toiletries and pharmacy. The beer however is at the rear right hand side of the first floor. Yes, I mapped it out for you, you're welcome. Convenience and cleanliness is why I lean to Harris before Farm Fresh. With plenty of parking and non of the random loiterers gazing at you. They have self checkout, which is handy if you're in a hurry (and know what to do). Also, there is a red-box machine located inside next to the main entrance. I've said it on my quick tip before, but i'll say it again, VIC card. Get one. It will save you so much than paying their ridiculous retail prices. read more

Supermarkets in the Ghent area are slim pickin's, so I can very safely say that Harris Teeter is your best bet! Alternatives? The Farm Fresh on 21st (often poor selection/produce/prices) or Food Lion up Colley. The feeling I get from this Harris Teeter is that it was trying very hard to be Whole-Foods in look and prices but not necessarily with the same quality (definitely a 3.5 star situation). Let's start with the bad (since really there's fewer than the good). The prices here are just too high. period. They have the same products as most other supermarkets and, just because you have nicer floors and ready-made hot food available (which I very seldom see people buy) doesn't entitle you to charge more. I know that a tub of Eddy's ice cream does not cost $6! Everywhere else has consistent sales! (my main non-sale item complaint). Also, the produce here isn't always the best. I very often find the fruit to be far from ripe and sometimes the vegetables look a little sad. Now to the good! The store really is beautifully updated. The second story is nice (although confusing if you don't notice it), which contains toiletries, the pharmacy, and more wine. I give HT major props for bringing in (and advertising) local produce, which is something that the community should embrace, in my opinion. I appreciate the fact that there is hot food for purchase but, like I mentioned, I almost never see people buy it so I question how fresh it really is. The selection of normal food and exotic food is also very good here, unlike Farm Fresh. They have self-check out and the checkers are generally fast. Bottom line: Harris Teeter is the place to go for groceries if you live in Ghent. The environment is new and inviting and it is generally well-stocked. My major complain is the prices and the often sub-par produce. I think my pros-cons are probably not mutually exclusive (nice=high prices?), but I still long for more sales! I read more

I'm legally blind so I find it hard to get things sometimes, but today I could not have asked for better service. As soon as I mentioned not being able to read the labels in the deli a nice woman from the deli came over to me and asked what specifically I wanted and was looking for. We narrowed it down and when she went to cut it, instead of asking the thickness from a distance she immediately told me to feel it for the thickness I wanted. Delicious pizzas! I also recommend giving the fresh made subs a try. Customer service is excellent too. I once had an issue with one of the take and bake pizzas, they refunded my money and gave me a new one for free. Overall, one of my favorite grocery stores in the area. read more

This review is specifically for the pharmacy at Harris Teeter. Went in here to fill two prescriptions with my college insurance from Colorado. At most pharmacies this is a pain, the technicians complain, and the whole experience is awful. This was not the case here! So many reasons why I like about this place: 1. Free samples: cookies, bread and dips, crackers and dip, deli meat and cheese, fruit, etc. 2. Weekly specials for pre-made foods: $7.99 pizza Mondays, $4.99 eight piece roasted chicken Fridays...I live off this stuff! 3. Good generic brands for decent prices 4. Somewhat cheap boneless skinless chicken breast at the meat counter: $1.99/lb, always! 5. Occasional coupon specials like super double coupons up to $1.50 6. Nice looking produce. They have fresh lemongrass! The only thing I don't love about this place: 1. Parking can be a pain ('tis life in Ghent I guess) 2. They have really done an incredible job remodeling this supermarket. I think they understood how much business they were missing by having the market face inwards and not be visible to the street. It's in a very convenient location in the heart of Ghent and now not only is it visible.... it's attractive! It's two stories, open and very spacious. I love their premade food stations and is a very nice place to go from the hospital. I particularly like their selection of cheeses (even though I'm not a huge fan of cheese!). Let me check", a woman replied. 13 minutes later a guy picks up and ask if he can help. I bought peanut-butter that was marked $4.99. When I rang it up it cost $10, then when I entered my discount code the price dropped $2.50. That's $7.50, not 4.99. I then double-checked the marked price on the shelf. Right product, right price-tag. Sure enough, I was over-charged. I asked for my proper amount of money back with my receipt and groceries in my hand. The manager said "No. You have to do that at the 'help-desk', and it is closed. You have to do it tomorrow.", rather than simply giving me back my $2.50 that the company scammed me for. I caught them doing it. The Harris Teeter in the Ghent area of Norfolk is what I would consider a pretty upscale grocery score. For one thing Harris Teeter is a little more expensive than the average grocery store. They have a lot of organic vegetables at this location as well as fresh flowers and a nice meat/seafood section. I don't normally do my weekly shopping here but I will come in occasionally for special items if needed. The store has a nice layout and everything is easy to find. I don't like to leave a bad review for any business in general, but after 3 terrible experiences in a row I feel that I must. The first was several days ago when I was at the "customer service' counter. the clerk ...Denise... was very unfriendly. I stood there for several minutes and she never even acknowledged me. when she finally got to me she never said hi or any type of greeting. It was just "how can I help you" no smile or eye contact. she seemed like she would rather be somewhere else. She acted like I was bothering her for money orders.Then 2 days later I had to get some rain checks for 2 items they had on sale but were out of. I tried for 2 days going there to get the items because I had coupons for them. I got the rainchecks and went back today to get the items and at the checkout I was told I can't use my coupons with the rainchecks. If they had not been out of stock I could have used the coupons earlier in the week so I am not sure why they couldn't let me use them today. When I told the checkout person to cancel my order she got and attitude and said "That's Fine too". as I walked out. I then went to food Lion and got great friendly service. This is the worse Harris Teeter I have ever shopped. Before Harris Teeter was built in Ghent I would drive to Virginia Beach to shop at their Harris Teeter. Food was fresh, and store was efficient, employees courteous.This apple in Ghent fell far from the tree. Produce is horrible. I bought lettuce and red pepper this past weekend. The lettuce was actually slimy, red pepper was rotten in the middle. I have returned produce or simply threw it out too many times to count. Produce is not rotated and when I shopped there this weekend the water was drenching the produce...no wonder lettuce was wilted and slimy. I've shopped at the Wards Corner store and found it head over shoulders better. At times I have checked every tomato and could not find one that wasn't soft. Corporate needs to do a surprise inspection on this one! read more

HT in Ghent is probably the nicest grocery store in town (although not as nice as the WF in VB) but they still have some of the same crappy service they had in the other one. If you shop at night, be prepared for night crew people to give you evil looks if you walk down their aisle and be prepared to stumble into mood lighting. Kind of like "we are going to close in an hour and want to make sure you really get the hint" lighting. Prices are sky high so I only buy things on the VIC card. Cashiers are kind of slow and sullen. Even the self checkouts seem to always be manned by the "I have to look at my cell phone every other minute" types who seem annoyed if you need anything. Asian food bar sucks. It's terrible food. And the parking lot is always full of moms in Volvo wagons and upscale SUVs trying to muscle their way into a spot. read more

Oh Harris Teeter, how I love thee. When I first moved to Norfolk, this was my neighborhood supermarket. I was able to walk up from my house and grab what I needed. Harris Teeter is a little more expensive, but in my opinion it's worth it. There is a good fruit and vegetable selection as well as a lot of ready made meals and soups that is perfect for someone like me who doesn't always have time to cook. In fact I am going to enjoy the Chicken Tortilla soup as soon as I finish this review. Harris Teeter has also ruined me for orange juice because I am addicted to their fresh orange juice that tastes like you are basically eating an orange. This Harris Teeter was recently renovated and moved to the other side of the shopping center. I was a little sad because my neighborhood pizza place and chinese place are no longer there, but they have definitely improved the place. It looks much nicer, has a bigger produce selection, and now has two floors. This Teeter is the best. It's my go-to grocery sotre. The people are really helpful, they have a good selection of fruits and vegetables, and their hispanic section is surprisingly varied. The only reason I took the 5th star off is that the few times I've gotten Ahi tuna, it has not been very fresh. But everything else is more than adequate. Tip: if buying shrimp, ask them to steam and season it cajun-style. It takes about 5 minutes and it's ready to eat! read more

This HT location has settled into the role of another mediocre Norfolk market. I find the produce section is often stocked with old, out of date produce. I've had to return packaged produce on several occasions. On Friday evening 2/15/2013 at about 6:00 PM they were out of fresh basil and shitake mushrooms. The organic garlic bulbs were extremely old and dried out. I was surprised to see many packages of fresh bay leaves but no basil, thyme, or oregano. The buyers at this store do not seem to adjust stock based on consumer demand, as many favorite items are routinely sold out and other items, not in demand, crowd the shelves. read more
