A totally unexpected surprise…read more We were hankering for meatless/less heavy, and stumbled upon this charming Vietnamese restaurant. A tiny, family business who provide a quiet, serene and pleasant dining experience. NO MUSIC. BONUS! Spouse had the "bun bo Hue" and myself the "crab and fish maw". Hubby said that the taste and texture of the seitan (glutens) were on point. The "fish maw" in my crab soup had a perfect fish maw texture! We polished both off our dishes in record time and felt good about what we ate. I'm not a vegan but sometimes you just want something light and sustaining. HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. The owners/staff are nice to their customers.

When we first…read morewalked in, I immediately noticed the space was packed with way more tables and chairs than it could realistically handle. It felt a bit cramped, and with everyone turning to look at us, it was a little awkward- definitely one of those we just walked into the wrong party moments. Once we got seated, we were handed menus with numbers and asked to write down the codes for what we wanted. I wasn't super hungry, so I ordered the spicy tofu and spring rolls as appetizers, while the rest of the group ordered a variety of noodle dishes. One by one, the dishes started arriving, and I have to say, the portions were generous and everything I tasted was really flavorful. But then I kept waiting for my food, and by the time everyone else was nearly done eating, the server came over to say they had run out of crispy tofu. On top of that, we had ordered two spring rolls and only received one, even though we clearly marked "x2" on the sheet. At that point, it didn't make sense to order something else and wait another 20 minutes to eat alone, so I just ordered a spring roll and rice chicken roll to go. Overall, the noodle dishes were delicious and definitely something I'd come back for. But the restaurant could really use some improvements in organization, space management, and order accuracy.

Christmas in March!…read more My best friend and I were supposed to meet up before Christmas. We both got busy, especially with my being stateside for the holidays. When I returned, she was away. We were both free in mid-March to exchange Christmas gifts and catch up. She lives in Peterborough. We tend to meet partway. I suggested this Veggie Planet in Ajax. She was game. We both had never been to any Veggie Planet location. I had no problem finding a parking spot in this plaza. I backed into a spot a few doors down from this eatery. I waited for my friend to arrive. Once she did, we walked in. Being our first time, we went with a pizza. I asked an extremely helpful woman behind the counter what size would be good for us. She recommended a medium pizza. We got the following items: - Medium Indian masala pizza - Onion rings - Kawa nuggets - Masala soda (sweet with a hint of saltiness) - Diet Pepsi My friend wanted onion rings. I originally wanted to get the kawa (soy) drumsticks. The female staffer recommended the nuggets instead. Interesting. I went with her suggestion. For the masala soda, she said that I could get it either sweet or salty. I asked if I could get a bit of each. So, my drink ended up being sweet with a hint of saltiness. I paid with a credit card. The transaction was smooth. She said that she'd bring the food and drinks over. Nice! We grabbed a table and chatted. Our drinks came out first. I loved my masala soda. It was slightly sweet. It did have a bit of saltiness to it. The masala was perfect with the fizzy soda. I just wish that this drink were offered in a larger size. I ended up getting a cold Diet Pepsi an hour later. It was perfect. Our medium Indian masala pizza came next. By default, it had tomatoes, onions, and green bell peppers. My friend is vegan. We made sure that we got vegan cheese. The pizza was yummy. The cheese melted nicely. However, with this vegan cheese, you will never get a stretchy cheese pull. In hindsight, this pizza would have been even better with protein. Kawa would have worked nicely. Luckily, we had kava nuggets. They were delicious. They were crispy and yummy. You couldn't tell that they were soy. The dipping sauce was yummy. I liked the onion rings. They were so crispy. They were enjoyable to eat. We spent at least a couple of hours here. I provided feedback on how fabulous the food was and how helpful the woman was when I bought my Diet Pepsi. She smiled and seemed happy. There is a washroom that's a single stall at the back of this eatery. It's the type where you press a button to lock the door and another button to unlock it. A light outside the washroom lets the world know that it's either vacant (green) or occupied (red). My friend used it first and said that it was clean. I used it afterwards. A customer tried opening the door twice while I was using the washroom. I actually said something the second time and she stopped tugging at the door handle as if her life depending on it. When I was done, I locked eyes with the woman who was clueless about the lights. Other than weird washroom woman, we had a great time here. I still want to try the drumsticks and get the masala soda again. So good! (139)

Graceful Vegetarian Restaurant, located inside Splendid China Mall in Scarborough, serves Chinese…read morevegetarian dishes that (in my opinion) are way better than the ones served in similar Chinese vegetarian restaurants that I had been to elsewhere in the GTA. At Graceful, they actually offer dishes that contain no mock meat, such as straight tofu and bean curd varieties with fresh vegetables (as a non-meat eater, I'm not a big fan of mock meats). The food here seems to be a hit with both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. The restaurant is easily spottable as there are huge signs and entrances from both outside and inside the mall. The interior is not very big - just one big room, but has a cozy and comfortable ambiance with Chinese decorations. There was a table with take-out snack and dessert items right at the entrance, where you can buy packages of cashew nuts, Chinese cookies, and glutinous rice-based snacks / desserts. Service was very friendly, quick, and much better than the service you'd find at most other Chinese restaurants anywhere else. We were presented with 3 menus: dim sum menu (where you mark the items you want to order yourself with a pencil), special dishes menu (with coloured photos), and the main menu (came in a paper booklet). We ordered a combination of dishes from the dim sum and main menus. DIM SUM - Vegetarian Shiu Mai: Loved it! The texture was very smooth and I could see the pieces of vegetables (maybe carrot, radish, water chestnut, mushrooms) in the shiu mai. - Mock BBQ Eel: We ordered this one just out of curiosity. This was my least favourite item out of the ones we ordered. It came out as cubed pieces of deep-fried gluten, covered in sweet sauce and a bit of sesame seeds. Not a fan of deep-fried stuff, and I didn't like the sweet sauce. It had zero resemblance (both visually and taste-wise) to eel (we didn't expect it to be... just wanted to see how this dish would turn out). - Mock Sliced Abalone Sashimi: This was okay, but it could do without the sauce. I liked the firm texture, just like abalone. It was served with a small dollop of wasabi (not needed, in my opinion). MAIN DISHES - Stir-Fried Tofu, Cabbage, Carrot, and Wood Ear Mushrooms: My absolute favourite dish here! We ordered it because I read another Yelp reviewer wrote that this dish was great, non-greasy, and non-oily. They were correct (thank you)! Glad we got this. The tofu was nice and firm with a chewy texture, and I loved all the vegetables that came with this dish. As a big fan of stir-fried cabbage and wood ear mushrooms, this was an easy win. I liked that it wasn't covered in thick sauce and not oily or greasy. - Egg Whites and Mock Crab Meat on Broccoli: Broccoli was a bit on the soft side, but I liked this dish for the combination of fresh vegs and a huge amount of lean protein (egg whites) on top. It was a big dish, and we got to take home some of the egg whites. - Crispy Egg-Free Noodles with Bean Curd Slices and Bitter Melon: This came with too much thick sauce (although I liked the black pepper), but the parts with the still-crispy noodles were good. The protein was actually called "Mock Beef" in the menu, but it was really bean curd slices. I liked the bitter melon the best in this dish, minus the sauce. Overall, this was a great place for Chinese vegetarian food. There was a wide variety of items to choose from, ranging from dim sum (small dishes) to larger main dishes, and all sorts of cooking styles (steamed, stir-fried, deep fried, soup, hot pot, etc.). In the fried rice section of the menu, it was written that they could make all of the fried rice vegan by omitting the eggs (good option for those who want them to be vegan). The 2 stand-outs of this restaurant were the quality and taste of the dishes (especially the ones with tofu / bean curd and actual vegetables), and the service. The gentleman who worked there (perhaps the manager or owner) really cared about his customers and acted like an owner - greeting us, making sure we were taken care of, giving us extra napkins and utensils when asked, explaining each dish that came out, and said goodbye as we were leaving. I plan on coming back to try some of their other dishes on the menu (still lots to choose from!).

The interior design is reminiscent of the earlier location. If you're into a quiet, serene atmosphere and polite, considerate fellow patrons, this is the place for you. The food was as memorable as before! I had the freshly shucked corn jjeok (congee) which was a thin congee (always my preference), topped with mock ham. 10/10. Spouse had the mock sharks' fin soup - 10/10. We shared the "Korean style" napa cabbage with several mushrooms and taofu. It was outstanding and thankfully not loaded with cornstarch. 10/10. We splurged on "peanut filled dumplings" which contained minutely-chopped water chestnuts, chopped carrot and mushroom and the lovely crunchy peanuts. TEXTURE WAS SUBLIME and the TASTE outstanding. 10/10. Service: 10/10. Ambiance: 10/10. Highly, highly recommended.

It seems like this restaurant was buying frozen dumplings from those Scarborough places that make dumplings and just cooking them. I am familiar with those Scarborough places.
