Fresh Tofu - Vietnamese Near Me - Austin, Texas

I dunno about anyone else, but this is the most disgusting place I've ever been to. I'd give us zero stars if I could. The noodle soup is so bland and it isn't even real bún riêu... no veggies or anything. Bún riêu is a tomato based soup and this surely isn't it at all, definitely didn't have tomato flavor of any sort. Bland and gross... it didn't even have Vietnamese crab cake in there, they put Vietnamese meatloaf in there, totally throwing off the flavor profile of what should be a rich and decadent soup. And don't even get me start on the cockroach I found in my soup... found it a few bites in and that was it for me. I used to lose this place for the snack foods and all, but you best believe I don't plan on coming back. If there's a roach in my soup, I definitely don't wanna know what sort of cleaning standards or hygiene this place has. Yuck! read more

THE BESTTTTT bun rieu in town. It's a small shop/hole in the wall but you got to try it. Since I discover this place for bun rieu, I never went anywhere else. Some of my fav you got to check out: bun rieu, banh canh, banh cuon. They make fresh tofu there so their tofu and cha in the soup are always fresh. You can also count on their pork blood to be super soft, not over cooked but also not raw either. read more

This place is legit. But if you dont speak their language, good luck ordering! So grab a vietnamese friend and drag them to this place to help you order! I came here having no idea what to expect and I am in love with it. Its a hole in the wall that most people will probably never ever go in while driving by. The food is so delicious and homemade, reminds me of my vietnamese friend's mom's cooking that I miss so much from college. When you go in, you are greeted by a nice grandma. I usually just point to what I want (two items- usually a meat and a veggie) over rice. I get a cup of their fresh soy milk and its easily one of the best lunches I can have in town. However, I dont think I have ever asked the price. Its been different every time but I get different meats everytime: a marinated pork or chicken. I love the variety that you get every time you come, so don't expect something when you walk in. Be surprised and fill your tummy! read more

A very small local shop with lots of food options for dine in and to go, although the quality and quantity have dramatically decreased throughout the years. Best thing you can get here is probably their tofu but most other items are mediocre. read more

If you are bored with pho and want to venture and try more noodle soups, this is the spot to visit. I am obsessed with their bun rieu (crab noodle soup) a pork based broth. Their fish cakes are delicious. Also love the silky tofu with ginger. My friend introduced me also to the "donut" which is basically a piece of fried dough (reminds me of a pita) which is just the littlest bit sweet. Yum! read more

Nothing fancy but one of the best places for bun moc (pork noodle soup) and banh cuon. Bun moc soup had a very tasty broth with bits of crispy pork and shallots that added great texture and flavor. They also serve it with a side of fresh veggies and shredded on choy. read more

As a 1/2 Vietnamese gal from houston I am spoiled with so much authentic viet food. I moved to austin after graduation and it's been hard finding solid viet food that's not pho. That being said I am SO happy I came across this place! The owner is sweet and likes to help me practice my very limited Vietnamese with her. All the dishes are so authentic and satisfy my need for comfort food. :) read more

I've been craving for fried tofu for awhile, and it seems like this is the only place in Austin.. I've tried their lemongrass tofu, mushroom(?) Tofu and their pork stuffed tofu. Its 2 for $1 for the lemongrass and mushroom, I forgot how much for the pork. Lemongrass tofu was fresh and hot (the lady made some in the back since there was none in the front). Not as great as the ones I've had in DFW, but it'll do for now. Mushroom tofu wasn't as flavorful and warm (due to the heat of the lemongrass tofu). Not bad, but lemongrass is better. Pork stuffed tofu was sitting in the front for who know how long. It was cold and had no flavor. Definitely not getting that again. Will I come back? Sure. Unless someone can tell me a better place to go to. I'll try their sesame balls next time read more

I was a regular customer of this place until seeing a little cockroach in my soup. I thought that maybe it was just an accident like an unlucky cockroach accidentally fell into my soup.. But I read a review on yelp, another client also saw a cockroach in her soup. I don't think it was just an accident... You should pay attention of what you eat. read more

Food was cheap and delicious. Service was nice and accommodating. The ambiance is super casual, like come and go type of casual.

Authentic Vietnamese food. I did enjoy the cha lua (pork) and banh cuon (rice noodle sheet) but later on found a nice little critter in my banh canh (soup). read more

Fresh Tofu - the soup was so good, this little guy decided to try it as well - Vietnamese Near Me - Austin, Texas

I'm so glad that Quyen B. told me about the special here! Bun rieu and canh bun! These are.. homemade noodle soups that aren't usually served in restaurants. This place makes it really well!! I hope they keep it on the menu for a while! I love the canh bun. Both are a tomato based soup. It's red in color but the broth is light, not too tomato-ey (I'm not that big of a fan of tomatoes). I love the tofu and the savory egg... custard in it! I'm trying to do less carbs lately so I just get the stuff to go, get extra tofu and eat it without the noodles (maybe just a little bit of noodles) because it's so good!! i'm probably going to be back this week for more!! This place also have a variety of tofu(plain, lemongrass +chili, woodear +clearnoodles). They have fried pork cakes (cha chien), fried fish cakes (cha ca chien) and another one that I haven't tried yet. My 5yo loves the fried pork cakes and they are handy for lunches!! Their sesame balls are alright. I like my sesame balls to be very crunchy, these are a bit more chewy. I still get them every once in a while. Can't wait to come back for more Canh bun!!! read more

Probably the most authentic Mom and Pop Vietnamese restaurant we've visited in a long time. It came highly recommended, and I could tell that it has many loyal customers coming in for lunch, it didn't disappoint. Pho with brisket and tripe, and plenty of Sriracha sauce, is my normal indulgence - but at Fresh Tofu I branched out and tried the Lemongrass beef noodle soup - delicious (I didn't spoilt it with chili sauce)! However, the rice cake, a bit like Cheung Fun - see photos, was my absolute favorite. We will be returning to try more off the menu. read more

After developing a random but overwhelming craving for tofu in sweet ginger sauce, I vowed to scour the streets of Austin until I got my hands on this delicious bundle of joy. I remembered there was a tofu place around the China Town Plaza, so of course I yelped it to see if they had my elusive prey ...and alas I found it! It tastes just as good as any of tofu in ginger sauce I've ever had. Brings back childhood memories for me. My mom use to get this for me every Sunday. Mmmm warm tofu and sauce... Only problem for me was ordering the item. The cashier didn't really speak English and when I said "silken tofu with ginger sauce" (which was what they put on the menu), the cashier still had no idea what I was talking about. Five minutes later, we got it fixed. I would come prepared with the Vietnamese name for tofu. Yes, I am Vietnamese but I really don't speak it at all. Besides the troubles with ordering, the tofu was yummy as expected and for $2 and some change for a decent size cup, I'll definitely be back for more. In the picture I already started digging into the cup, I'm a weak woman, I have no will power. At least you can see the ginger sauce better! :) read more

My to go spot for great authentic Vietnamese food (thanks to another Elite Yelper friend)! The banh cuon is wonderful and if you're in the mood for some soup, the tomato crab soup ( Bun Rieu) is phenomenal! They have other items and dishes and we will most likely be here once a week. This place is inconsistent. From the hours posted on the door to what's in their food. We've come here for banh canh at least half a dozen times. Each time, what's in the soup varies. Most of the time there's a pork hock, sometimes not. Sometimes there a rib, sometimes three. Sometimes none. Twice they had cha lua. The inconsistency is really unfortunate, because although they have the best tasting broth and the fresh made cha lua is amazing, not knowing what your getting is going to keep us away. Hope they can improve on that. read more

Fresh Tofu - Banh Canh Cai. No6. Very good. Add Pork for $2 - Vietnamese Near Me - Austin, Texas

Very bad service attitude. When guests give coins, they throw them on the ground. When asking to buy things, they ignored to call many times before someone came out and the attitude was very uncomfortable. They only treat Americans nicely and treat Asians pretty badly. A racist place to watch out for if you're Asian. read more

I certainly understand why this place gets mixed reviews. It's sort of a restaurant and a take-out and a stuff-under-heatlamps and who-thought-this-was-a-good-idea spot. It's confusing and takes some getting used to. The menu, such that it is, isn't always available. You basically get whatever they've got going that day/week so I wouldn't recommend going there unless you're up for an adventure. They have maybe two tables if you want to sit but there's no table service. The stuff under the heat lamps is pretty greasy and not especially good. Yes, the "cranky old lady" at the register is that. However, give her time. She warms up after a few visits. I get the feeling she really doesn't want to do this but is elderly and this is how she's trying to make a living. Given all that, you must be wondering why I like this place so much. Well, consider that it's the only place in town that makes nem chua. You can only get it otherwise at MT Market in who-knows-how-old packages. Nem chua is raw pork fermented and seasoned and has ghastly (to American tastes) raw pork skin mixed in to make it crunchy. It has a sour, funky taste and they sell it for $1 per piece. That's not the best pricing and they try to sell you 10 at once but when the "cranky old lady" begins to like you, she'll sell by the piece. The other thing that keeps me coming back is banh cuon, which they sell for just $5/lb. Google it. It's hard to explain, and hard to find reasonably priced. It's basically thin sheets of rice gluten interspersed with ground pork and wood ear mushrooms. Served with crispy fried onions and a fish sauce. It's very un-fancy here but tasty and nice. They also have banh gio - again, hard to explain so Google it. It's dense rice gluten wrapped in banana leaf with pork and mushroom (wood ear) inside. They have another version with mung bean that I don't like so much. $2. $3.50+ elsewhere. If you consider this a take-out place, know that their menu is whatever they happen to have that day, and understand that the "cranky old lady" is just trying to get by, you'll find some great things to take home that you won't find elsewhere. I find a few good things there every time and I like the lady running it. She's really charming, if a bit hard to get to know. One warning - a big one - she often forgets to return your credit card. I'm absent minded and have left 2 there. No fraudulent charges or anything like that. She just forgets as much as I do. If you go back, she has it securely saved for you. And don't try to call - she speaks English just fine but I think she needs to see your face to truly understand what you're saying. I recommend it. It's fun. But why is it called Fresh Tofu? read more

I've only come in here to buy a large $5 styrofoam cup of the silken tofu with ginger sauce as a dessert. I'd definitely be back for more and look forward to trying their other offerings. Came in today to buy four pieces of tofu, you know me.. Saw that they tofu skin rolls! Oh boy... So the tofu skin roll was different than what I have had before from other tofu shops. This one had wood ear, eggs, bamboo shoots, and some type of bread-ish stuffing. The outside was deep fried but was kinda soggy and soft due to how big the roll was. (Would really like to see them make one with a tofu, or fish paste, stuffing inside-- that's probably overkill for some people that's like having sausage wrapped in ham.) Had a somewhat pleasant conversation with one of the ladies, the other one was like 'can you f'in not...' read more

I stumbled on this no frills place as it's next door to Baguette House and figured I'd pick up some soup for lunch since I already made the drive here from North Austin. What caught my eye is their menu featuring less common than ubiquitous pho Vietnamese soups and other dishes. We picked up bun rieu and banh canh with pork and both were great though I particularly enjoy bun rieu. The crab cake in the soup tasted more like omelette than a meatball, nice and spongey (I believe usually it's a mix of pork and crab). read more

Fresh Tofu - Fresh Tofu (white) vs. Fried Fresh Tofu - Vietnamese Near Me - Austin, Texas

Agree with others that you need to know what to order and knowing Viet is a plus cause their menu can be confusing. They have the best Bun rieu and possibly Bun bo hue. The portion is big, i am always so so full afterwards. Their bun has lots of meat too, especially bun bo hue. Apparently this is authentic Hue style so the broth is light (not lots of lemongrass taste or orange color or has oil on top like some that like it this way) Their banh tieu and banh cam are meh though. but get the chuoi chien (fried banana) if it's availble, cheap and yummy! Their tofus are good, i like to buy them and add them to noodles i make at home. The hot soft tofu and hot soybean milk are also my boyfriend's favorite. Their mi vit tiem (duck noodle) is good too. The place is small so you might not be able to sit if you come in a big group at popular time. The owner can be forgetful too (nice lady but she forgot our orders a couple times already, no big deal but make sure to ask if you wait for a while) their service is nice too, not a full restaurant but they give you what you want when you ask. read more

If you can speak Vietnamese, it's very easy to navigate, they have a handwritten fresh menu every day to showcase what they have. It changes all the time because the food is made fresh. First impressions are important. If it's something that can be construed as a fluke, I'll most likely give it a second try before reviewing. This place, however, is definitely an exception. A 'never-again' place. I got a sesame seed bun and some fried tofu. When the lady went to get a bun, she used tongs to pick up the bun and placed it in a bag. Sanitary. When she moved right to get the tofu, she also used the tongs and placed four cubes of tofu on a small tray...which is all fine and dandy until she covered my tofu with her bare hands as she went to get some Saran wrap to keep them in place. Ew. She then proceeded to punch some numbers into the register with the same hand that she used to cover my tofu. How many times has this lady washed her hands today? I know she didn't wash her hands after she handled cash when helping the guy before me. I honestly considered walking out and not buying since she wasn't the most amiable lady on the block, but she was an older lady...and the Asian in me annoyingly chattered that I couldn't disrespect an elder like that. So I feebly handed over my money -.- The tofu were pretty expensive, $2 for four cubes. $1 for the sesame bun that had no trace of sesame seeds on it whatsoever. It was dry and hard. The tofu went into the trash as soon as I found one, so I can't tell you what it tastes like. Pretty sure I got swindled by a cranky grandma. Maybe that's why it's a never-again place for me. I'm just too ashamed. That's right, it's not their lack of sanitation or anything. read more

Their "bun mam" is yummy but 8 out 10 times I have bad stomachache after eating it. My friends have those symptoms too.

This place is one of those little tucked-away finds that you rave about to your friends. Mainly a to-go business, they have a few small tables where you can sit and eat. There is one big glass counter that is divided into two parts. On the right-hand side is all the hot main course items. They have a deal where you can get 2 or 3 main courses with rice. Of these, my favorite is the pork-stuffed bitter melon. On the left hand side is smaller food snacks. I recommend the fried banana. Unfortunately I can't agree with Sherry N on the yam/shrimp cakes - I think Tam's does a better job - but the ones here are still worth a try. Then there's the drink fridge. There's green-tinted soy milk - I'm guessing it's flavored with pandan leaf. Even cooler are the composed sweet drinks. With all the bits of vegetation and flowers floating in them, they look like a side-view of some alien's aquarium. Oddly, this makes a good place for a lunch date. If nothing else the food will get you to strike up an interesting conversation. read more

This place is expensive for what you can get. For example, $5 for "bánh bèo" or "bánh bot lc tran", where as in the MT market it's only $2.99 for the same thing. Most recently, I got a "banh tet" a traditional Vietnamese dish and it's $15, barely any meat inside. I'll attach a photo so you can see. And the thing is not a big size either. As I remember it's cheaper in MT market, but when I got there they said it's not ready and i didn't have time to wait so I went to Fresh Tofu for it instead. Their "cha c" is also $5 each for a small roll. More importantly, none of their foods tastes good. I can say they taste average and for the price it's not even worth it. I don't recommend this place if you want to try authentic Vietnamese food. As a person who grew up eating Vietnamese food I know very well what tastes good and what doesn't. Don't waste your money. read more

Cold refreshing tofu served with ginger sugar syrup. Yum! I love it!

Despite being a tofu joint, they didn't have any lunch special entrees without meat. I ended up with two heaping scoops of rice and two varieties of tofu (no sauce) for $5.50. It was only after my meal was packaged that I was informed that there is a $10 min, so I scrambled to make up the difference. I ended up with some coconut water and a half a pineapple (fine by me!) and headed out. With only two small packets of soy sauce included, I knew I'd need some sort of sauce for my meal, so I grabbed some hoisin from the MT next door. Surprisingly, I didn't even really need the sauce because the tofu was so tasty! One variety was a plain fried tofu while the was mixed with red pepper. Delish! For veg folks out there, I recommend that spicy tofu. I haven't really had anything quite like it before. read more
